[Q] Root, Custom Roms, Unlock on Asus TF700T - Asus Transformer TF700

Hello,
i was wondering if someone could answer some questions that i have about android and the asus tf700t.
now i already searched on google and on xda but there are so many informations and i just cant tell which one is the "best" or the right one.
My Asus is unlocked. i got that far and didnt think it would be too hard to root but i see command lines and/or 3 different kinds of software or files that i have to download first or programs like unlockroot etc.
so i was wondering if you could answer me a few questions.
1. do i need to root to put on a custom rom or is it enough that the device is unlocked?
2. what is the easiest and safest way to root?
3. what are 3 good custom roms?
i have android 4.1.1 on my asus and heard that 4.2 is out so i would like to update it but i never had an android device until now so i just want to make sure i m not destroying it after 3 months of use.
Thank you very much
Ben

Custom ROMS are pre rooted, usually, so you best bet would:
1. Update to stock 4.2.1
2. Root using Motochopper
3. Download GooManager(give root rights') from Play Store and Install TWRP by installing open script recovery.
4. Perform a factory reset via TWRP, without wiping Internal storage, or MicroSD card.
5. Install CromiX or CyanogenMod
There are other ROMS out there, but it is advised to install CromiX first because it is stock based and can be flashed over the stock ROM.
Also, make sure you know how to get into the recovery manually, and make sure you check files before flashing to make sure things downloaded properly.

i dont know how to upgrade to 4.2.1. or if that update is available for my device yet. some pages said it is. some said its not available.
i have no idea where to get it since over the air update is not possible due to the unlock.

Asus pulled the JB 4.2.1 firmware off their website, probably because they realized it had too many bugs. They probably are working on a new release and I would wait for it.
In the meantime read the forums and familiarize yourself with the process of rooting, installing a custom recovery and flashing custom roms.
If you don't want to wait, search for the forums on the Motochopper tool. I believe you can also use it to gain root under 4.1, but I'm not 100% sure.
If you have root, download Goo Manager, tap the 3 dots in the upper right and choose: Install open recovery script.
This will install the TWRP 2.5.0 custom recovery.
Boot into TWRP and select 'Backup'. This will give you a nandroid backup of your current system. Copy it to a safe place.
Next, you still being on 4.1, you need to flash the JB 4.2 bootloader which is version 10.6.1.14.4. You'll find a link in post 1 of the Cromi Xenogenesis thread in the development section. The dev packaged it with TWRP 2.5. It doesn't hurt to re-install TWRP.
Also download the latest release of the Cromi-X (ODEX) ROM, currently 4.4.1, and place both zips into the root of your internal or external SD card (your choice).
Boot into recovery, choose 'Install', navigate to the 10.6.1.14.4 bootloader/TWRP zip you downloaded and swipe to flash it. After installation the tablet will reboot into your old rom - this is fine.
At this point, just to be safe, you may want to check if you have the correct bootloader installed: Boot up with Vol Down and Power button and read the tiny script. It gives you the bootloader version.
If you're 100% sure you have the correct bootloader and TWRP 2.5.0, proceed:
Boot into TWRP recovery again, select Install, select the CROMIX 4.4.1 zip and flash it.
The Aroma installer will start and give you options to choose from. Stick with most of the default options for the beginning. You can always re-flash the rom with a different set of options selected.
Enjoy!

[Q] New (virgin/stock) TF700 to CROMI 3.2 - is this right?

Hi there, been loitering on the sidelines for a while, reading many many threads and now ready to leap in. I have bought a TF700 Infinity and want to get it fully modded, enhanced, streamlined and dripping in XDA goodness. I want to know if the things I have planned are a) in the correct order, b) are the correct/most suitable methods and c) are inadvisable or unecessary for any reason.
Root the device
- Using the DebugFS method (details HERE and HERE).
Unlock Bootloader
- Using the ADB tool from blackmambazzz
- If the ADB tool doesn't work then I'll use the download from the Asus website
Install recovery (TWRP)
- I will try using GooManager first (hence the reason to root)
- If GooManager doesn't work then I will try the ADB tool again (option 1)
- If I get problems with the latest version I will try TWRP v2.3.1.0 (as some people have reported that this could be better)
Flash JB bootloader
- Boot into recovery (as per the instructions in the All-In-One Guide For Asus Infinity post)
- Flash the 10.4.4.25 JB bootloader found in this post
Flash ROM (CROMi 3.2)
- Using the downloads from the CleanROM Inheritance 3.2 post, flash CleanROM Inheritance and choose my options through the Aroma installer
Flash stock kernel (by _that)
- Use TWRP to flash the stock kernel through the CROMi installer v1.6 found in the CleanROM Inheritance 3.2 post
Hopefully that will get me from out of the box virgin TF700 to a fully charged awesome tablet/laptop that is smooth and powerful. Hopefully I've done my research and got it right but please let me know if there is anything incorrect. Thanks!
The procedure depends which firmware is installed your new TF700.
If 9.4.5.26 or earlier: Do not install ANY updates before you read the [BRICKPROOF] thread in the dev forum about nvflash, then decide on further steps.
If 10.4.4.x: You can't root this version directly. Either you downgrade to 9.4.5.30 first, or you simply unlock directly and continue with installing TWRP via fastboot.
Also, when you install CROMI, you can directly select the modified stock kernel, it's not a separate step.
hello! i am stuck in a point installing CROMI.
I have unlocked tf700 and installed cmw recovery.
every thing is fine.
i have put the zip file with CROMI in the internal memory but cwm is not seeing it.
it says also can't mount mmc when i try to look for the files inside...
where am i wrong?
thanks!

Try power off your device, wait a few seconds, then boot back into cwm see if that helped!
If all else fails I would switch over to TWRP I prefer it way more then cwm.

Thanks _that, your work on the stock kernel is most appreciated and I can't wait to experience the fruits of your hard work. My confusion with needing to apply it afterwards was that your kernel was included in the 3.2.1 of CROMi last night (24th Jan). At the time of the post it was still a post-ROM activity.
I should get the TF700 today so will check out the firmware version. Initially I was confused about the 9.4 / 10.4 version numbers on the forums but I think that this refers to the 'Build Number' in Menu > Settings > About Tablet menu. Assuming the tablet is on 10.4.4.x, my plan is to:
Unlock using ADB tool or Asus unlock app
Install TWRP recovery using ADB tool (if this does not work, root and use GooManager)
Flash CROMi from TWRP using Aroma installer to select the _that stock kernel and browser2ram
Allow to settle for 5-10 minutes
Enjoy
I'm not including the root step as I understand that CROMi is pre-rooted.

3.2 already contained "my" kernel, 3.2.1 contains the nodpi variant.

Looks good. Note that the ADB tool has no error handling. If it does not work, it makes sense to invest some time to get adb and fastboot working on your PC, it is always helpful.
If you don't have any apps installed yet, you don't even need to let it settle - just don't expect absolute smoothness in the first minute, while it's still doing some background stuff.
OK, having fun with this. The TF700 arrived with 4.1.1 and boot loader 10.4.4.16, so I unlocked (pushed unlock APK to tablet through the ADB tool v6) and installed TWRP 2.3.3.0 through the ADB tool. I backed up and then flashed CROMi 3.2.1 ODEX and got through the entire process 'successfully' and rebooted.
Then nothing. I got stuck at the "Android is updating" / "Finishing boot" screen for 20 minutes. Got nervous, searched the forums and found that while some people see the screen for 5 secs, there was one person who hit the problem and a reboot sorted it out. Tried a few reboots but to no avail (battery depleting all the time) and I tried reflashing the ODEX version 3 more times but got stuck at the same point each time.
I reverted to my backup and tried to flash the JB bootloader ZIP (in case it was the 10.4.4.16 bootloader) from TWRP but couldn't get it working. The ZIP would appear to load successfully, I rebooted into Android and selected the firmware update option in the notifications area. I selected 'Install' at the pop-up and the tablet rebooted but no change to the bootloader when I checked in settings.
In the end I flashed the DEODEX version and this seemed to work. I'll try again with the ODEX (MD5 checked out OK) later.

Have you tried to flash .25 JB bootloader and reflash cromi ODEX 3.2.1 with _that stock no dpi kernel? make sure wipe cache and dalvik cache first before flashing.

The settings screen does not show the bootloader version. The bootloader version is only displayed when you hold down Volume-down while powering on - tiny text in the upper left corner while the bootloader menu is shown.

Easy Guide to Unlock, Root, and Flash ROM?

Hey guys, I just unlocked and flashed ROM on my LG Optimus G phone and looking to do the same with the TFT300T.
I did read some of the stickies, and there are various ways of doing this.
Anyone recently unlock, root, and install ROM on your TF300T? Which directions did you take? I am looking for the simplest and user friendly solutions. Any tips are much appreciated.
Thanks
What rom/ android version are you currently running?
I am on 4.2.1
First off you need to go to Asus support site and download the v8 unlock apk & run it (unlocking your bootloader).
Then have a good read here to learn how to flash the compatible TWRP custom recovery (2.4.4.0), the root your device.
As of know I don't know about any custom roms that will boot with the newest bootloader. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
Do have a good read though, and read it again - and make sure you understand it and then read some again. Then proceed by following the steps to the letter.
Have fun! :good:
Can I just download an older unlock apk if the current ROMs don't run with the v8 unlock?
No. If you updated to 4.2.1 you need to use the v8 apk.

Got it. So if I am on 4.2.1, there's no ROM that I can flash? Just want to get that absolutely correct.
Not that I'm aware of at this point. The new bootloader uses a different partition layout than the "older" 4.1 ones, so it will soft brick (as will flashing the wrong recovery, you'll want the latest twrp 2.4.4.0)
Thanks. That's really good to know.
So at this point, for anyone on the OTA 4.2.1, we can unlock and root but cannot install any kernels or ROMs yet, correct? Anyone know if CleanROM is being updated to work for us yet?
I think you can try this ROM.
Thanks, I had a look at that. I'm having a hard time figuring out which set of "instructions" to use. The ones on the OP:
Code:
Installation instructions:
- Unlock your device using the Asus supplied APK. Search around the forum for the official unlocking app.
- Install a custom recovery such as TWRP. Follow the instructions in the TWRP thread (website)
- Copy over the ROM zip to your Internal Storage or your microsd card
- Boot into recovery and simply install the ROM. This ROM will NOT wipe your current ROM settings
- Enjoy!
Or at the bottom of post #3 (where it seems to have the download links) it says "BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL ANYTHING IN THE JB 4.2.1 folder BELOW CLICK THIS LINK FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS!"
Which then gives you this set of instructions:
Code:
The stock ROM is uploading in the JB 4.2.1 subfolder of the main download folder on the first page..
Be warned that once you do this... you will not be able to simply restore your backup and go back to 4.1.1. You will need to flash the JB bootloader ( think craig gomez has a package for it) and repartition your tablet. So be ready to STAY on 4.2.1
Instructions:
1. Make a full backup of your internal storage and copy it over to your computer after. Do a "nandroid" or "backup" in TWRP and copy the resulting folder/files to your computer (if you want a backup...)
2. Download and copy the Energy_JB_4.2.1_Partitions.zip to your tab.
3. Reboot into recovery and flash the above mentioned file. Reboot.
4. Wait while the blue line at the bottom is doing its thing. At the top you should see a "signature match" message. This WILL WIPE YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE. Which is why I recommend a backup!
5. At this point the tablet will NOT boot. You need to manually reboot and get back into recovery. Hold power and volume down and choose "RCK".
6. Either using an sdcard or adb, copy over the actual ROM zip Energy.TF201.JB.03.15.2013.STOCK.zip and flash it! Reboot... and... Enjoy.
Having started on the OTA 4.2.1, I can't figure out what I need to do here. Do I require the Partitions.zip, or am I already set with that having installed 4.2.1 prior? Conflicting sets of instructions are bad...

Sbdags is working on it and has made some great progress. He's got it figured out where we are gonna be able to flash the bootloader, kernel, and custom recovery all at one time. From what I've read, I have a feeling a release is coming pretty soon.
Just keep up with the thread and you'll be good to go.

I tried several ROMs and this was the only one I was able to get to work.

I have been having lag issues since the OTA upgrade to 4.2.1 and figured putting a custom ROM on the TF300T might help things out. Glad I came in here. I had unlocked it via the ASUS website: http://www.service.asus.com/#!downloads/c1wax
So what else can u do with unlock?

[Q] REQ Complete Guide to installing CM10.1 Nightlies on TF300T

Hi All,
I am looking for a complete guide (or links to various parts) to install the new CM10.1 nightlies that started on 5/19/2013.
I've been looking through XDA and I see a lot of information that's dated for the 4.2.1 and earlier, but nothing that confirms these steps work for these new nightlies.
1. Unlock BL using ASUS v8? (I am on 4.2.1)
2. Root it (how, what procedure should I follow and which files)?
3. Which BL should I install? I've been using CWM on my GS3, but a lot of these guides use TWRP. which versions
4. This guide looks dated, please confirm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055430
5. Any recommendations for a better ROM? Or is the CM10.1 the best for this tablet?
6. Since I have the WIFI version of this, I am assuming I dont need to worries about the baseband updates that were recently required for the CM10.1 updates? If I am wrong, please advise.
Thanks for you help in advance!

Most of your questions have already been answered multiple times. Ill do my best to summarize the answers ......
1) V8 unlocks most although there are some who arent able to unlock after having things come back from Asus from repair.
2) Unless you are stuck on a locked bootloader, skip rooting if you are planning on installing a custom rom..... why waste your time rooting something you wont be using? If you fall into this category, your option are limited but there is a way to root without TWRP or CWM.
3) Personally I have found that the 4.1 bootloader version 10.4.2.20 seems to play nicest with my tf300t. This of course means im stuck using Roms made specifically for 4.1 bootloaders. Im using twrp 2.4.4.0. Instructions on downgrading firmware are all over, but im pretty sure you must have an unlocked bootloader for this as well. Its a simple fastboot command to push the older system blob file to the device. Relatively easy.
4) Cant comment as I dont use CM
5) Im using CleanRom Inheritance and found that it not only benches higher, but runs much much faster than anything else I have tried on my tablet. I started with the latest 4.2.1 ROM and Bootloader. After trying everything out and everything lagging on my tablet, I decided to downgrade firmware. ROMS are nothing but personal preference, but, I find personally that Cromi ( for 4.1 ) along with Unter's kernel, makes my device smooth as butter. YMMV
6) Again, I cant comment as I dont use CM. Maybe someone else can chime in on this ? There are PLENTY of rom options available. Just try things out and see what you like best. Just remember to read the roms OP very carefully to make sure you have the proper bootloader installed for it. You can brick your device if you mismatch the rom and bootloaders.

First of all, thanks for the quick reply and detail!
1. I have a new one - so hopefully I should be ok. But I'll use v8
2. Great point, duh! The ROMs are already rooted!
3. I'd like to stick with the 4.2.2 bootloaders since my other devices are all running the same stuff. I haven't used TWRP before - any preference to that versus CWM?
4. no worries
5. I'll definitely keep in mind along with your bootloader suggestion should I downgrade. I've felt the lag with the ASUS Stock 4.2.1 ROM and all it's bloatware - I'm expect an immediate change right there with a clean rom.
6. yeah that is the primary reason I am asking about which bootloader to use with CM10.1's new nightlies.

To be honest, the lag is still there accross all the 4.2 roms I tried, even debloated. Its not as bad but its still there. My alternate device has a beastly exynos in it so im used to a perfect smooth experience. I notice even a little bit of jitter and it drives me crazy ( hence why I downgraded to 4.1 ) .
As far as what bootloader to use for which CM rom, each will tell you which to use specifically. I saw there is a cm10.1 for 4.2 and for 4.1. Just make sure to match things.
I used to be a CWM user all the way, but twrp does trump it in features and usability, especially for the transformer series. I beleive there is only one single twrp that works properly on the new bootloader for stock based roms ( no cwm will work on it at all). It ends in .42 so make sure you flash the correct one. If not, your partitions wont be writable.
One MAJOR warning.........
Do NOT use the wipe / factory reset on ANY bootloader. You will brick your tablet!!! Permanently!!!!
You can ONLY use the wipes inside of twrp / CWM.

dude, you are so awesome!
definitely smart to have installed TWRP - CWM through ROM Manager tried to suggest installing a TF201 recovery. From the web site it's vague but suggest a TF101 image as well.
I followed your suggestion and downloaded the 42 TWRP recovery from after having done all the SDK Tools installation and testing connectivity with FASTBOOT (from the installed SDK package, not random ones from the internet).
http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/97
I'm up in TWRP and running a backup of the ASUS original installation, will copy to External SD card.
previously i've formatted the internal card and then installed the ROM and GAPPS. Should I not do this?
thanks again! I'm keeping notes and will update when done.

You can brick your device if you mismatch the rom and bootloaders.

dude, you are so awesome!
definitely smart to have installed TWRP - CWM through ROM Manager tried to suggest installing a TF201 recovery.
I'm keeping notes and will update when done.

okay - lots of options in TWRP - going the simple safe route and just following the norm:

Im assuming you are flashing CM10 then? The only important thing is fully read the OP and match your bootloader to whatever one they tell you. Its generally not a suggestion, but an actual requirement.
Mines a 32gb so I keep all of my backups and rom flashes right on the internal storage. I feel its safer in case of SD corruption or an accidental wipe. It doesnt hurt to have it in 2 places though ( backup your original rom to SD card but keep everything on the internal as well ). I always flash from internal ( roms and nandroids alike ). Ive never had an issue.

so this is what i've done so far and am stuck now it seems. probably a mismatch between the CM ROM and the BOOTLOADER.
1. Installed TWRP 2.5.0.0 - version ending with 42.
2. From the Wipe -> Advanced in TWRP, I selected SYSTEM, CACHE, DALVIK CACHE, and DATA (skipped the last two options).
3. I have the ROMs/GAPPS on my external SD card (and backup now too)
4. I installed today's nightly CM 10.1 for TF300T and the 20130301-signed (per 4.2.2 CM builds).
5. Reboot (via TWRP, Power Off)
I hit the power button to turn on and it gets stuck at the ASUS screen. Cannot boot into ROM either via the Android icon in the Bootloader menu.

going to give Cromi 4.2.1 a try too while I am in this bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2204166
I have the matching ASUS bootloader and TWRP combination this the ROM needs.
As for the CM10.1 - looks like for TF300T they are still using the older JB requirements... but still researching.

interesting - this ROM is packed with configuration options - you can really tailor your install.. very interesting - should work since it is a stock-based rom. we'll see. installing now.

yeah so that worked fine. the CM10.1 version must require some different combination.
taking your suggestions now and downgrading to the 4.1 bootloader. will also install the CleanInheritance rom.
by the way, thanks again for your help and suggestions!
So just for other people out there... if you want to run the TF300T downloads from get.cm (the nightlies as of now).
I've confirmed the following requirements:
1. 10.4.2.20 - TWRP 2.5.0.0 - JB
2. CM 10.1 5/25/2013 Nighty (This is a 4.2.2 ROM - requiring the JB, not 4.2 bootloader - i imagine at some point this will be updated)
3. GAPPS 20130301-signed
ah so nice!

[Q] Currently on Cromi 3.4.1 (Android 4.1). How to move on?

A while back I installed TWRP and Cromi version 3.4.1-10.4.4.25/US DEODEX. My tablet has gotten infuriatingly slow and I think its time to move onto a newer and better rom. I wanted to try out the 4.3 Cyanogen Rom, but the requirements are to be on the asus 4.2.2 bootloader. How can I go about updating the bootloader. Do I have to revert to stock first? What process should I follow? Thanks guys!

The safest method is to download the latest firmware from asus extract it and flash the .zip with trwp, from here it will overwrite twrp after you reboot so set up android 4.2 and then reboot go into fastboot and fastboot flash twrp 2.5 from there you can flash what ever 4.2 rom/kernel you desire

If you liked Cromi, you will love CROMi-X, the JB 4.2 based successor to Cromi roms.
Boot into TWRP and make a nandroid backup - just in case.
Backup your files, pics, videos to your PC or a SD card - just in case.
Go to the CROMi-X thread, download the 10.6.1.14.8 bootloader/TWRP 2.5 package, flash it and boot back into your old Cromi rom once.
Boot back into TWRP (which should be 2.5 at this point), choose 'Wipe', swipe to do a factory reset (highly recommended if you move from 4.1 to 4.2 since 4.2 file system is quite different from 4.1)
Flash CROMi-X 4.7 - enjoy!
You will probably find all your files, pictures etc on this clean installation anyway since a factory reset in TWRP leaves the data/media folder untouched, but backing them up is just good computing practice.

+1 this is the safest method, but once you have the latest Asus software installed use motochopper to root then use Goo Manager to install the latest twrp which is v2.6.0.0.

I do not see a reason to flash a stock rom. You loose your recovery, you loose root and have to start all over.
And I will stick with TWRP 2.5 for the time being. 2.6 has been OK for most users, but some had problems with it. And I don't take chances with my recovery - ever.

I was only helping the guy to upgrade to the new bootloader and at the same time as installing the latest Asus rom. Yes you will loose root and recovery but motochopper works so easy on a fresh install and recovery is really easy to install using Goo manager. I use this method every time an update is released and available to download from Asus support.

[Q] Help - Clarification on [How To's]

Hi
I finally have decided to try and unlock, root and install custom ROM to my TF300T. It's lagging a lot and I am going crazy over it.
I am not new to rooting and flashing roms, I have done the same numerous times to my beloved GNex and a couple of other mobile phones I owned before. Having said that, I have only followed the tutorial to flash. So, not a total newbie but sort of.
I am trying to make this tablet more usable (my usage is is restricted to browsing, streaming sports/movies and a few games). The more I read the more I am getting confused. I just would like a clean ROM which doesn't lag and hopefully a method that has lesser possibility of Bricking.
I am on the latest firmware from Asus (But, It did come with ICS if I remember correctly before I updated to 4.2.1). I know when I updated it came with new BL so, using custom recovery/roms designed for 4.1.x is not an option (please correct me if I am wrong). I intend to follow these steps -
Please point me in right direction/correct the steps/suggest better steps where ever needed. I just want to know if I am on the right path so far.
1. Unlock BL with latest Unlock tool from Asus website.
2. with [UNLOCKED BL], install 2.5.0.0 TWRP &SuperSU ( will follow - [GUIDE][13/11]Update/Recovery/Root/Downgrade Android 4.2.1 on Unlocked/Locked Devices ) - OR should I install 'openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-tf300t-4.2.img' from TWRP site?
3. Once #1 & #2 are complete, I can choose a Custom Rom and flash. Anything else to be wary about?
Questions
1. Should I use 'Flatline - Unbrickable Transformer TF300T - Jellybean edition'?
2. I do not have much data and I can download the apps again if needed. So, Is Nandroid backup/Backup with Titanium necessary? (for recovery of the system/ROM - I do not care about the apps/user data at this point)
3. Can someone suggest what they think is a better combination of ROM+Kernel? From a post I see the following ROMS I can choose from
joelalmeidaptg's post :
Here you have a list of ROMs that are compatible with the new bootloader and are safe to flash once you are on 4.2.1 firmware:
CleanROM Inheritance Xenogenesis from sbdags
Energy™ from NRGZ28
GRIMLOCK from hardslog
CyanogenMod 10.1 Unofficial from pcoussa
ROM-THEME- STOCK KERNEL Stock Asus Firmware 10.6.1.15.3 from surdu_petru

After unlocking the bootloader and installing TWRP, I would recommend installing CROMi-X.
It is based on stock so you do not need to wipe before installing (you can keep all your apps).
It has a nice graphical installer and you can choose lots of different tweaks.
It comes with a variety of different kernels - I use _that's OC kernel.

Thanks for the reply. Which version of TWRP? 2.5.0.0 or the latest one from TWRP site that ends with 4.2.blog?

Use the one that ends in -42 since you are on the 4.2 bootloader. Flatline NvFlash is always a good idea. A helpful guide is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545610.
cromi x for sure
cromix is def the way to go with this tablet-get a fast microsd-partition and use a kernel with data2sd like thats.
good luck, if installed correctly you'l feel like it's a brand new tablet
---------- Post added at 11:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:17 AM ----------
also, i find it's better to install cromi without installing a kernel first (using stock). then after cromi is up and running, use kernel installer to install desired kernel and tweaks. have fun and make sure to read everything
