So I used the ##3282# menu to set the speed to 3G and it works fine. Problem is I can't get it to go back to Automatic data speed selection. The settings say Auto but it stays on the last speed selected even through a reboot.

For all the people that need their battery for a day or more I wanted to add the instructions on how to disable 3G.
Go into the dialer and type in *#*#197328640#*#*
Select "Debug Screen" on the menu
then hit "Phone Control"
then "UE State Control"
"Change RAT to GSM" will turn off 3G access and will leave your DATA on 2G.
This will save lots of battery especially for those who have low 3G signals.
Please note that rebooting the phone or even turning on "Airplane mode" will reverse these changes.
This means you will have to change the settings again (this is also the fastest way to cancel the changes and go back to 3G).
Thanks a ton for this. I'm sure it was in another thread, but I always saw mixed reports and hadn't tried it myself.
I have a 3-4 bar EDGE signal in my office, but only a 0-3 3G signal, so this will be a lifesaver.
However, as soon as there's a ROM that adds the force 2G option that should be there back into settings (and removes any other locks AT&T put in the software), I'll probably go that direction just because it is a pretty clunky way to do something that should be an option as is.
I have something to add to this. If you use a reboot or airplane mode to turn 3G back on, the next time you go to turn 3G off, you may need to re-enable 3G (WCDMA) before changing back to GSM. Apparently, the setting didn't get changed in the debug menu even though I got switched to 3G, so I had to put it back on 3G first.
Is this still the only way to disable 3G but leave 2G enabled on the Captivate? The apps in the Market are still all or nothing (3G or no data connection at all).
Thanks!
3G, 2G disabling?
Is there a way to disable the 3G/2G altogether but still use wireless?
You can always put it in airplane mode and then turn WiFi on if you don't want to use the AT&T network at all.
After doing a manual root, the Thunderbolt connects to LTE fine but when there is no LTE, the 3G won't connect and the phone doesn't receive data.
Advice?
Try checking to make sure you are not in LTE only mode. Dial *#*#4636#*#*, select phone information, scroll down and go down and make sure you are on the CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto option and not LTE mode.
If that doesn't work, try downloading "reset connections" from the android market and running that app when you enter a 3g area out of 4g range. It may be a handoff issue from 4g to 3g towers.
##778# hit dial, edit mode, password is 000000, modem settings, Rev. A, change to enabled, instead of eHRPD, hit menu, commit changes.
try 3G again.
I assume like me, you are in a section where Verizon's Hybrid Network isn't working, and so you must tell your phone to revert back to their regular 3G network.
We have 4G in Pittsburgh, but there's a spot in Squirrel Hill that I go through on the bus in the morning where I drop to 1x, and I'm fairly certain that there is 3G there. However, there are other areas I've definitely seen 3G. So, it seems a little mixed. We're definitely early adopters of this new network
The fix
Phone ##778, edit mode, 000000, modem parms, REV-A change from ePHRD to enabled, menu, commit, reboot, problem fixed.
seems to have worked for me. I was having a problem with syncing too, hopefully this fixes that as well. Thank you!

Not to familiar with TB verizon, but friend bought his TB and I saw there was 4GLTE on it, and now nothing, no icon not in wireless networks, nada!
What is this "fix" for?
So I finally jumped in and got the WanHu ROM installed with M's v5 patch. This thing is really nice now, hopefully it will stay that way even after I reinstall some of my apps.
One thing that I've noticed is that the ability to use only 2G networks is gone. It used to be an option under Settings » Wireless controls » Mobile networks. Any chance that may be coming back?
I know some people would probably think I'm crazy to be asking that, but in my experience the batter life was pretty much double that of what I was getting on 3G, so I'd use that mode sometimes.
Thanks for all the good work on the WanHu ROM.
You can turn off the 3g at Settings >> Wireless networks >> Data Network settings & there is also a 3g widget.
Hi,
At this point you only turn data on or off. You cannot switch from 3g to 2g.
I would like to have this feature to, because the radio at my work is very poor and the battery last much longer in 2g.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App
switch 2g , 3g, and 2g/3g
if i have to change the default network setting (3, which mean 3g/2g auto), i can from here:
1. from the dialpad dial *#*#4636#*#*
2. from the popued menu, choose Phone Information
3. from "Set preffered network type" You can choose several options including:
"GSM auto (PRL)" (this is usually default and means 3g and failback to 2g, depending on signal
"WCDMA prefered" (this mean 3g and if there is no 3g, then 2g), this settings seems to wotk, but if you exit and return to the same menu it is changed
"WCDMA only" 3g only
"GMS only" 2g only
hope that helps.
p.s. I use Battery monitor application, which has shortcut to the Phone Information menu.

Thanks for the reply. I was messing around in those menus and could not find a "GSM only" mode on my phone. I will look again, but all I remember were an "auto" mode, a "3g only" mode, and a bunch of CDMA stuff (which doesn't apply to our phones).
But I will look again and try out the battery monitor application program as that would be nicer than typing the key sequence everytime.
And just to expand my (rather small) knowledge of the android OS. The option to select only 2G under Settings » Wireless controls » Mobile networks, is that a framework thing that has to be added?

some time ago i set the phone to LTE in the testing menu to see what LTE networks it could see. it saw them fine but not for the network i use yet.
the thing is ever since then everytime the phone reboots it seems to default back to LTE only. soi have to ga back in to the test menue and set it back to LTE/ GSM to get the signal back.
Help! why is it still doing this and how can i fix it?
Go to Settings, More... under Data usage, Mobile networks, Preferred network type. Make sure the radio button for 3G is selected.
so i cant leave it on 4g preferred? 4g should be coming to my location in the next coulpe weeks so id not want that to be perminant.
or will setting it to 3g reset things?
ooooooh, did as you said rebooted, 3g locked on. sat back to 4g preferred and rebooted, 3g locked on.
yey! thanks, i dont get why it worked but much appreciated.
A strange issue just popped up in the last day.
I had my preferred network type set to LTE. Now, I can't get that setting to stick.
Within a minute of setting it to LTE, the setting is lost and it changes it to either 3g or 2g.
This happens without intervention from me.
