This might be odd...
On the Surface RT, Is it possible to live boot, into linux?
Please search before posting. Seriously. I get that you just got your new toy, but... please.
No. Not at this time, and while people are looking into it, not in the immediate future. It will require a Windows driver (and a jailbreak, which we have) that loads the Linux kernel and dumps NT, after the initial bootup is done.

May I ask what NT is?
Also, In theory, would that mean that install would also be possible after this?

nt, the windows kernel powering Windows RT, server, 8 and phone 8. Very core of the OS.
Linux/android/anything other than RT on RT devices has been discussed to death, so much so that of you looked in the RT development and hacking section you would have seen on of the most recent threads was a discussion on how it can be done.
Right here right now it cannot. Will be a long time, possibly never, until it can.
@ericerk: Did it even cross your mind to do a search on "Windows NT" or "NT kernel" (or even just "NT") before wasting our time with a question that anybody familiar with the modern computer landscape should have been able to answer? I mean, maybe you're real young and never actually used "Windows NT" (what it was called through version 4; 5.0 was "Windows 2000", 5.1 was "Windows XP", 5.2 was "Windows Server 2003", 6.0 was "Windows Vista" and "Windows Server 2008", 6.1 was "Windows 7" and "Windows Server 2008 R2", 6.2 is "Windows 8", "Windows Server 2012", "Windows RT", and "Windows Phone 8", and 6.3 will be "Windows 8.1", etc.) but still, don't waste our time with stuff you could learn from elementary use of a search engine...

I'm so sorry, my goal wasn't to annoy, or anger you. I really wish this hasn't,
Regardless, thanks for your input.

Hey
Does anyone have any information, including pictures if possible, of the new windows mobile OS, Windows CE 6.0?
On some reviews it states that you can find out about it at www.microsoft.com/windowsce but it looks like Microsoft have rearranged their sites... this just leads to the CE homepage, talks about 5.0 but no other.
I know it's not out yet... apart from the VS Dev tools, but was just wanting to see an insight before its eventual release.
Cheers!
I am very interested in seeing this too. I have seen many threads about creating custom ROMs. I would hope that if this OS has all MS promises, that someone would create ROMs for the phones in this forum based on the new kernal, if possible. Licensing issues aside...
Is this "hot" OS will be based on Real time system?? I too want to know more about it.

If anyone knows where I can get/buy this beta release, that would be great
The site gives a link at the bottom for more info... but that redirects you, and I can't find any info there... :-(
You know that Windows CE and Windows Mobile are Microsoft's names for two different products now, right?
Phones don't and will not run Windows CE.
Also, I read that Microsoft is seriously behind the competition with development of a real-time OS, such as would be suitable for handsets that use a single chip for radio and a main processor. Like, it's 18 months away, at best.
Meanwhile, SE and Nokia already have single-chip phones on the market, running a real-time version of Symbian.

Are they? I was reading a review from Microsoft's own site saying that Windows CE 5.0 is also known as Windows Mobile 2005; and that the next version (it gave a codename but I can't remember it) will be Windows CE 6.0. ???
CE is the core
which mw is based on
so it's not the same
but they are connected to be sure
Hi friends.
Has anyone of you already heared that MS renamed Windows Mobile to Microsoft Windows Phone OS ?
I know that from here (German article): http://www.chip.de/news/Video-Finale-Version-von-Windows-Phone-OS_37502248.html You can translate it.
Here is an english video in that it is said near the beginning too: http://www.chip.de/c1_videos/Microsoft-Phone-OS-Video_37504720.html

I'm still a little confused by all this, and I'm not sure some of these new reports are correct.
"Windows Phone" was announced as the new name for the platform and the devices a while ago, but the name of the OS itself was still supposed to be "Windows Mobile."
I can't figure out if these new reports are actually reflecting a change in that policy, or are just reporting on the fact that "Windows Phone" will be the term MS uses to refer to everything from now on. I guess it doesn't make a big difference one way or the other, but it just bugs me that I can't tell whether the name "Windows Mobile" is officially dead or not.
I suppose "Windows Phone" is a solid name, but I personally think the next gen of WinMo should have been rebranded "Windows 7 Mobile" instead, so MS could use Win 7 and "Win 7 Mobile" to cross-promote their brands.
Whatever name is for wm7 that´s not really important...
What it is important is to know the launcha date (oct 2010 aprox) and to know that it will really be an OS that can compete to actual ones and has a great user experience!
Your right orb3000.
@ typo. They don't call it Windows Phone but Windows Phone OS. I think that the infos are true cause for a windows phone you need a windows phone os. So too me it seems like they will realy change the name.
where come zune hd????!!!!
Redmond, WA?
Moved as not Development & Hack.
Please give more details when asking a ? as i'm confused and dare say other users will be too.
zune HD not being a wm phone or a htc device will not get a forum here though
I think he's asking if the Zune HD is coming with WM7 or not. I've heard that the Zune will be integrated into the next version of windows mobile 7. I thought i saw something at windows mobile 7 or gizmodo.

Hi guys,
Recently I've aquired an windows embedded ce 6.0 r3 device. I've busted my *ss off trying to understand what this thing is all about but I'm getting really fustrated with the mixed explanations ht einternets throw at me. So far I haven't been able to come up with any decent results regarding what windows embedded can actually do for ME, not some high end superuser.
Okay, so after searching I know now, windows mobile and windows ce are not the same. Windows mobile runs on windows ce. windows ce cannot (without mods) run windows mobile apps. Windows ce apps can't be found freaking anywhere (i tried wince 2003/5 apps, but they all don't seem to work).
So, I'm close to giving up here. Is there something I'm missing? Can anybody tell me what the heck this thing CAN run?
What I was wondering, seen windows mobile is running 'on' wince, isn't it possible to flash windows mobile 6.5 ONTO it somehow? Because atleast that I'm familiar with..
any help would be greatly appreciated,
Dylan
P.S. Some specs of the thing are telechip arm11 800mh 256 ram 800x480 res 7" touch screen.
no? Nobody...?
Drive yourself nuts with this.......
OK, just for you, a specially adapted CE version of 5x5, originally released here.

It required a bit of fine tuning, as the menu appears across the top of the screen, not like Pocket PCs, along the bottom. I had to change the logic a bit, to get it to centre in the screen.
During Demo mode the caption of the second menu option should change from 'Reset' to 'Cancel'. I'm working on it.
Don't try this on your Phone device, the display will be awful. Use the link above. This is for CE ARM processors only. It's compiled for ARM4, the lowest common denominator, so it should run on any ARM powered CE device.
Right, fixed the menu state changes as mentioned above, as it's CE, it's back to good old SetMenuItemInfo() to do the donkey work. WinMo lets you send TB_SETBUTTONINFO messages, to do the same job, as they are actually buttons. CE is far more basic.
Hello all,
With the flurry of Android and WinCE tablets that seem to have appeared, is it possible to install a WinMo image on these or is anyone working on a cheap tablet with WinMo installed?
Although the CE6 ones look ok it would be great to have a proper Office mobile installed rather than the Softmaker suite.
cheers
Try a smartq v5 or v7, no winmo, but it has android, ce, and some other form of linux and 1080p out. i know ownta.com has a Chinese ''tablet' with windows', but i don't know how reliable they are. honestly you're better off getting a real tablet PC with windows. you can get a hp tc1100 for cheap right now, and its a great tablet.
I saw about "Windows Tablets" news.
Microsoft announced the WP7 only used for cellphone, and windows tablets recommended for use windows 7.
Maybe ms consider windows mobile only a OS for smartphone...
"Chinese ''tablet' with windows'"is touchpad? It looks like a ipad...
As it sounds like WinMo maybe out of the question, can Cabs be installed/ported to CE6? Mainly trying to get Office mobile
htc shift
