Windows CE 6.0 - General Topics

Hey
Does anyone have any information, including pictures if possible, of the new windows mobile OS, Windows CE 6.0?
On some reviews it states that you can find out about it at www.microsoft.com/windowsce but it looks like Microsoft have rearranged their sites... this just leads to the CE homepage, talks about 5.0 but no other.
I know it's not out yet... apart from the VS Dev tools, but was just wanting to see an insight before its eventual release.
Cheers!

I am very interested in seeing this too. I have seen many threads about creating custom ROMs. I would hope that if this OS has all MS promises, that someone would create ROMs for the phones in this forum based on the new kernal, if possible. Licensing issues aside...

Is this "hot" OS will be based on Real time system?? I too want to know more about it.

If anyone knows where I can get/buy this beta release, that would be great
The site gives a link at the bottom for more info... but that redirects you, and I can't find any info there... :-(

You know that Windows CE and Windows Mobile are Microsoft's names for two different products now, right?
Phones don't and will not run Windows CE.
Also, I read that Microsoft is seriously behind the competition with development of a real-time OS, such as would be suitable for handsets that use a single chip for radio and a main processor. Like, it's 18 months away, at best.
Meanwhile, SE and Nokia already have single-chip phones on the market, running a real-time version of Symbian.

Are they? I was reading a review from Microsoft's own site saying that Windows CE 5.0 is also known as Windows Mobile 2005; and that the next version (it gave a codename but I can't remember it) will be Windows CE 6.0. ???

CE is the core
which mw is based on
so it's not the same
but they are connected to be sure

Information on Windows Mobile 6.5 leaked

Hi Guys,
This is just a heads up. According to msmobiles, windows mobile 6.5 is out there.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7803.html
World Exclusive: Windows Mobile 6.5 in pictures ...
While the arrival of Windows Mobile 6.5 for the year 2009 was announced here and there, then confirmed by Steve Balmer himself at the PDC 2008, Smartphone France is very pleased to present exclusive World 2 first screenshots of what should be Windows Mobile 6.5.
If for the moment there is no real information on the new version of Windows Mobile, what is happening is that Microsoft has finally decided to redesign the interface of the aging systems to try to catch up with his lags behind its competitors.
At visual we can see that Windows Mobile 6.5 is very close to what should be Windows Mobile 7. Does it mean that Microsoft has decided to completely revise their copy as regards WM7 and we propose intermediate version which should be initially WM7? In all what whatever happens in a case closely monitor ... although it will take many months before seeing a new version of Windows Mobile on the market.
MOD Edit: Revised thread title to avoid confusion.
Information about the OS has been released, the OS has not.

Windows mobile to android

Hey guys,
I was wondering if there is anyway to change my OS from WM 6.1 to the new Android 2.0 OS. If you can give me any in site on how to do this i would greatly appreciate it thanks.
In some devices you can run android on top of wm. But some functionalities don't work yet. Go to your device's subforum and search if someone started the port process.
Check for a forum for my device and there is one so i just posted the same question in the smartphone general forum. I dont want to run android on top of WM i want to completely change from wm to android.

That requires a new phone.
I had a look at Android first by running it on my HTC Diamond but it is incomplete. I liked what I saw so went out and got an Android phone.
Android is loaded by running a utility called Haret which somehow manages to reboot the phone into Android replacing WM. When you reboot again it goes back to WM. Without knowing which phone ou have it's impossible to know if that is possible for you to do. Look at the Wiki section of this site specifically for your device.
i am running a samsung i910 omnia from verizon wireless. I like windows mobile but i love the android system. The wm allows you to use more technical stuff where as android is more fun.

Windows embedded ce 6.0 options

Hi guys,
Recently I've aquired an windows embedded ce 6.0 r3 device. I've busted my *ss off trying to understand what this thing is all about but I'm getting really fustrated with the mixed explanations ht einternets throw at me. So far I haven't been able to come up with any decent results regarding what windows embedded can actually do for ME, not some high end superuser.
Okay, so after searching I know now, windows mobile and windows ce are not the same. Windows mobile runs on windows ce. windows ce cannot (without mods) run windows mobile apps. Windows ce apps can't be found freaking anywhere (i tried wince 2003/5 apps, but they all don't seem to work).
So, I'm close to giving up here. Is there something I'm missing? Can anybody tell me what the heck this thing CAN run?
What I was wondering, seen windows mobile is running 'on' wince, isn't it possible to flash windows mobile 6.5 ONTO it somehow? Because atleast that I'm familiar with..
any help would be greatly appreciated,
Dylan
P.S. Some specs of the thing are telechip arm11 800mh 256 ram 800x480 res 7" touch screen.
no? Nobody...?
Drive yourself nuts with this.......
OK, just for you, a specially adapted CE version of 5x5, originally released here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509413
It required a bit of fine tuning, as the menu appears across the top of the screen, not like Pocket PCs, along the bottom. I had to change the logic a bit, to get it to centre in the screen.
During Demo mode the caption of the second menu option should change from 'Reset' to 'Cancel'. I'm working on it.
Don't try this on your Phone device, the display will be awful. Use the link above. This is for CE ARM processors only. It's compiled for ARM4, the lowest common denominator, so it should run on any ARM powered CE device.
Right, fixed the menu state changes as mentioned above, as it's CE, it's back to good old SetMenuItemInfo() to do the donkey work. WinMo lets you send TB_SETBUTTONINFO messages, to do the same job, as they are actually buttons. CE is far more basic.

how long have you guys been using microsoft's products? the version number and naming conventions for windows os, being desktop or mobile is not governed by the version number but more to the number of succession of release.
"lack of knowledge"??? funneh.

If you go by how WM was, he's correct. WM 6 was build # 6.0, WM 6.1 was build # 6.1, WM 6.5 was build # 6.5, & WM 6.5.X was build # 6.5.X. I have been wondering the same thing on WP7, but at the same time MS has never used a standard build # to release # format. WP7 is WinCE 6.1 for example & Windows 7 is is Win NT 6.1 if I remember correctly.
Simply because if you go to Settings---About you will find: Software: Windows*Phone 7.5 (even under 7712).
If I recall correctly, Microsoft is internally referring to it as Windows Phone 7.1, but is branding it as 7.5 for the general consumer/marketing.
Also, people are calling it a beta because it is a generic RTM, nothing more, and because it is not optimized for our phones, a lot of people just see it as another "beta" till we get the final version meant for our devices.1

This. I don't know why there is so much confusion. Seems pretty simple to me.

Because not everyone is running the Beta. They see build #'s & hear people calling it 7.5, it's that simple. To assume everyone is running the Beta & can go to Settings>About is rather silly.
Mango is officially "Windows Phone 7.5" even though it's version 7.10.7720.
7720 is the software build number. The .68 is the carrier/OEM version. You will see the .68 change for all phones/models but, the base software is 7.10.7720 if it is mango.
The RTM is what it is, it's the final software from Microsoft, now it's up to carriers/OEMs to customize it with their software and drivers for each phone, this is where the .68 will change.
If your running Mango and go into the About settings, it does show "Software: Windows Phone 7.5" so that's why it's being called 7.5

Very good answer, gives the OP the answer he wanted without any condescending remarks.

[Q] how to Get Back to WM 6.5 ?

Hi Everybody !
you all know how strange it might be some requests form your boss but this is the most strange one !
My Boss has a system that work on WM 6.5 only and doesn't work on WM 7 and he requested that I should Provide him with 40 New WM 6.5 devices !
you know that they are not available currently So I figured out that I should buy new WM 7 Devices and Flash it Back to WM 6.5 !
I think theoretically this is possible but have anyone tried it ?!!!
I want to Try it on HTC 7 pro Device , Could anyone tell me what the steps I need to do that ?
any other suggested Devices ? I only want it to be New ,with QWERTY keypad and I can install WM 6.5 on it !
Can this be done with an Android Device ?
Thank you all in Advance.
Not possible.
Contact your business carrier and see if they can get anything, otherwise tell boss it is no longer made and WP7 is not an upgrade but a new product which is incompatable and nowhere near as good as WM6.5.
Just tell him MS have lost the plot.

I feel your pain mate, WM6.5 was great and MS have taken a huge leap backwards. We're not alone either, their market share has plummetted due to the move as people have either desperately scrounged for WM6.5 devices or moved to Android and had their in house apps re-written or found new alternatives.
WP7 and winmo 6.5 are completely different and not backwards compatible as said above.
Winmo 6.5 was good, but Mango is promising, however, specifically written programs written for business are a different ball game, get on to ebay and buy some HD2's, unless you know a developer who can re-write the programme for WP7?

There is no Upgrading for the System !
I will try the HD2 Choice.
Thank you for your support.
The hd2 is awesome. I've had win6.5, win7, ubuntu and a ton of android versions on it. If you have an issue, just wipe it clean and start over.
