Razr Maxx HD & Lapdock 500 - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well guys im about at my witts end with this. My troubleshooting steps have led nowhere and dont know what to do next.
I am trying to hook up my Razr Maxx HD to my Lapdock 500. From what ive read this should work no problem just without the webtop software interface. This is fine as i have already found a tablet ui module for xposed. anyways when i hook up my phone the mouse and keyboard work perfectly but all that comes up on the display is gray lines. i have tried 2 separate lapdock 500's with the same result. I have also hooked up an original razr with the same gray lines.
now heres the twist...my brothers bionic works perfectly fine with webtop 3.0. I have double checked the hdmi port in my razr with a full sized hdmi adapter to my tv and it worked perfectly. i have also tried forcing 720p through a module thinking that it was possibly an out of range issue but it produced the same gray lines.
a little about my phone...my phone is rooted through the motochopper root and was rooted for the first time on 4.1.2. it was not rooted before it was updated.
System Version: 9.18.79.XT926.Verizon.en.US
Android Version: 4.1.2
Kernel Version: 3.0.31-g101ca72
Build Number: 9.8.1Q-79
Im not sure what of this information is relevant but i am desperate to get this to work or at least find out what the problem is so i can plan what to do next. My plan was to take this thing on my cruise with me on monday as i dont want to take my laptop with me...plus lets face it lapdocks are cool. so does anybody have any clue as to what could be happening here?

I'd continually call Motorola until you reach someone who will help. On more than one occasion they promised me the 100 and 500 would go full screen and switch to a tablet ui even without webtop.
Maybe you should try removing the tablet mode. Motorola says it is built in to Android to resize automatically so maybe your framework is the culprit.
I think on slick deals I reading something similar to your issue. Spread the word and get the bounty going from my thread in the development section.
My atrix lapdock works just fine but it will not go full screen.

I have tried it both with and without framework...on and off tablet mode...directly after a factory reset...even tried forcing 720p output through the hdmi with no luck. and correct me if im wrong and im sure you've tried it but isnt the issue with it not going full screen a dpi issue?

I tried using a script to modify the dpi. All it did was shrink everything down on my phone display but still had black bars.

Rom toolbox working?

I just got My sgs3 today and I have a few questions...
1...should the boatloader already be unlocked? Or does it still have to be done through the app...according to what I've read it has the right boot screens to be unlocked but not sure how to tell
2...if I root it can I use Rom toolbox to change status bar icons etc...? I used it all the time on many fassy but don't know if it works on this
3...has anyone used aokp m6 on this? I loved it on my fassy and do all of the same t mobile themes work on it?
And last I know it says you can take still shots when using the stock camcorder...anyone can tell me how?
I appreciate any info as coming from the fassy I'm trying to figure out the true potential of my new phone

No the phones still come with a locked bootloader. You need to root the phone, refer to this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709, then go into the market and find an app called EZ unlock and use it. It's very self explanatory.
Far as ROM toolbox, I'm not 100% sure myself if all the tweaks work or not. I'm too scared top test it out cuz I don't feel like having to Odin back to stick and start over again lol.
While taking a video there will be a camera icon on the screen just as I'd you were using only the camera, tap it and you got your still picture without stopping the camcorder from recording.

ok that camera question seemed really stupid now...but it wasnt there at first...once i changed the record setting to limit to mms it appeared and now it stayed...no idea why...lol
I actually have one more question about the hdmi to tv options...i dont see anywhere in the settings for that like how the galaxy s settings had...will it automatically recognize it? and can you use rca cables like you could on the fascinate also (i have an old tv laying around...lol)...and now that i think about it one more thing...supposedly it has otg capabilities out of the box...i tried usb host controller but all it did was freeze...does it just show up in the file manager when i connect it? i do plan on rooting and putting in a custom rom eventually...but being i just got it yesterday i at least want the 14 day return period to run out before i mess too much...i'll prob just do a stock root for now until things get a little more stable...plus i dont want to lose the camera...
sorry for all the questions...i guess ive been running custom roms for so long i forgot what its like to use a stock phone

I didn't even know the phone had HDMI to TV capability, there's no physical output like there is on Droid X/X2 etc... so I can't help you there.
Far as losing the camera or not, you'll only lose that if you go to AOSP/AOKP ROMs. If you choose one of the stock Touchwiz ROMs like Synergy or Beans' you keep the camera the way it is. I'm personally running Synergy and love it, check out the link in my Sig. It's stable as all hell, and the tweaks in it are very useful.

If you go on amazon or eBay (as well as other places I'm sure) they sell a 5 pin to 11 pin hdmi adapter for about 30 dollars...haven't gotten it to try it yet but supposedly it's labeled specifically for the s3 and three reviews say its generally worked for people so I'm assuming it has it built in somewhere

I use HDMI out every day, I use it to connect to both a plasma TV at work & also to the [email protected] video system in my SUV.
Make sure you buy the official GALAXY3 Samsung MHL/HDMI adaptor, it's not cheap but it's the only one that works perfectly.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080CXSOU/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
It will recognize the HDMI out as soon as you plug it in, you don't have to make any settings change in the phone.
I use an HDMI scaler in my truck to convert it to analog with the red/white/yellow plugs as that is the only aux settings I have in the mobile setup.
---------- Post added at 03:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:24 PM ----------
As far as ROM toolbox, some settings work and others don't with a semi stock ROM.
I was able to change the ugly stock green battery icon to a white digital readout icon so it matched the other white taskbar icons.
I hated the stock VZ boot animation/sound so much I wanted to punch a baby every time the phone booted up.
I tried to change it to a custom boot animation with ROM toolbox. The custom animation I picked didn't take, but what it did do was eliminate the VZ sound and animation & change it to the stock generic Samsung animation (a blue swirly thing) with no sound which is all I really wanted anyway so I am real happy with that........
Thanks...exactly the things I wanted to figure out...I wanted to do the same with my car player just wasn't sure if I could get it from hdmi to vga...and all I really want to change is the status bar icons mainly...hate the green battery...I know the boot ani never worked on many fassy with aokp either...just did the same thing as yours...now I just have to root if I ever get time

Photon Q & Moto Lapdock 100 support info

In case anyone was looking at this option down the road, saw this mentioned by a poster over on Phandroid...apparently it only mirrors on the Q rather than giving full Webtop functionality:
http://androidforums.com/motorola-photon-q-4g-lte/615217-weptop-support.html
Also, I read elsewhere within the past few days that Moto is doing away with the Lapdocks going forward anyway, so whatever is out there currently in stock is pretty much it.
sorry, just wandering.. is lapdock 100 or 500 suitable to be use with photon q?
Sent from my XT897 using xda premium
No, the early/immediate reviews on the phone were wrong unfortunately....the Photon Q doesn't have Webtop. I'm guessing the HD Dock is nothing more than a mirror mode, haven't really seen anything reviewing the usage on that yet.
Would have been nice if they provided an hdmi to mini hdmi cable .. I think the atrix was the only box I've ever seen come including that. And has anyone tried hotspot or tethering without paying extra to Sprint for these "features"? tHX,
I hate the fact that i'm staring at a photon q and a lapdock 100 and can't get the keyboard/trackpad to work with it. I don't care that it only mirrors since it doesn't have the webtop partition but it would be cool if the keyboard/trackpad would work.

Bluetooth tethering used to work before the "stability" update they released in November. Now it silently fails. (Computer/tablet can connect and get an IP address but no traffic gets routed out to the internet.)

...keyboard and touchpad problem - inside lapdock is classic usb hub...usb hub is connected via otg to usb on photon.
keyboard and touchpad is connected to usb hub - and here is problem. As i have tested - phq can mount only one device via usb otg....
I have tested mouse - it works, keyboard - works...but when is connected both to hub works nothing
Here is problem inside system
well as of right now im on ASA-14 (deodexed if that makesa difference) and both the touchpad and keyboard work on my lapdock as well as all the function keys. my wireless mouse and thumbdrive work too

I think you are in the wrong forum section. You seem to own the Photon 4G not the Photon Q 4G LTE, so your statement about the usable touchpad and keyboard is not correct for the Photon Q 4G LTE

No im in the right section, i do indeed have it working without any other modification than previously stated. There is the problem with the phone randonmly unmounting all the devices thatre plugged in (keyboard trackpad wireless mouse and usb stick). It could probably be easily fixed by someone that knows kernel/usb otg stuff
so... today was in my work mr Skrilax_CZ.
Has new ASA firmware and i have tested usb host otg.
I have not found powered otg cable, so i have tested it with normal...and when i connect
flash disk on it led diode start flashing.
So i think than with new firmware mass storage works and so touchpad/keyboard must works too on lapdock
Just going to add that I have the ASA14 firmware (DL here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095536)
which lapdock is the best one to get?
droid dock
dock 100
dock 500
bionic dock
does it all work ok now with the update? minus the webtop
thanks
I bought a motorola atrix lapdock, connected motorola photon q and it works in mirroring mode. Work touch pad and keyboard. I plugged the flash drive in usb port of lapdock, installed the "stick mount" app from market and photon see the files from flash drive. Two problems,
1 - image is not visible on the full screen. (see the image)
2- in lapdock, screen of smartphone always is turned on.
I do not know how to change this.
Sorry for my english.
i have a lapdock 100 all is working fine if i run the original rom.
at the lapdock 500 the ethernet connection and the sdcard slot work 2.
but the webcam not work atm. maybe its a part of webtop. or just need to add some files.
there is a way to run webtop from sd if u make a single partition for it. u can also run a normal linux this way.
other trick is to use the recovery partition. but i not test it with the photon q for now.
@ _olimp_ : to get the screen in full size look into settings->display->overscan
that should fix it
i wanne try to add a touchscreen. someone has done it already?

very glad that someone else is trying to bring it to mind, since Motorola has thrown us all! I understand it so that the app can Webtop saw out of the old firmware of devices and try to run on the new ones? have not tried anyone do that?
I really like the concept of webtop and would like to make it fully earned. Unfortunately so far I have not bought the device, just because support for Motorola said that my device is not compatible with any docks.
i got the verizon droid lapdock and with my photon q i could never get the keyboard and mouse to work properly, it mirrored but thats all it did. i did get it to work with my sony phone so the lapdock was fine.
How about the CM? should you only use the stock rom??
@SwitNJ: that isnt so easy ;( the internal memory is splitet in diffrent partitions. There are between 15-39 single partitions in internal memory in a motorola (android) smartphone. /system is one of them. Also /cache, /data and the recovery is a own partition.
One of them is named /osh. This is the place for Webtop. If u have a phone with webtop the /osh has space for 1,5 - 2 gb.
In our phone (xt897) there is no /osh partition since motorola say good bye lapdock/webtop.
And no other partition is big enough to install webtop. All is used because the phone isnt made for it. I think its possible to reformat the internal space and rip some megabytes from all other partitions to make +1 that is big enough for webtop. but this is really dangerous and i not wanne brick my phone :[
As example there is safestrap recovery for the xt894 (droid4). That give u the possibility to install 4 roms at the same time. so u can choose what rom boot if u start the phone. befor u can install them u have to make a new partition (with safestrap). so i think it must be possible to do the same for webtop.
@palmwangja: for me in CM the mirror not work. but it is possbile to add it. stock rom (4.0.4) is the only that mirror with lapdock 500. stock rom (4.1.2) work with my small lapdock. but the lapdock 500 only give me a black screen. dont know whats wrong for now. would be great if someone know the answer.

[Q] Droid Razr XT912 BAD GLITCH

Hello,
I am having severe problems after upgrading to JB.
WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
Newest Drivers installed
Droid Razr JB Utility XT912, Fully Extracted, ran the batch. Again from a different download site. Again after wiping cache & data through Rec.
Tried Droid Razr HD Utility 1.2, fail fail fail..., (probably from trying to downgrade)
Battery FULLY charged.
No way to tell if debugging is on...
Yes, I have went through Fastboot on phone.
Tried with W7 Home Prem & W7 Ultimate 32 & 64 bit.
JB installs with NO fails whatsoever from Utility.
Droid startup starts flawlessly, than BAM.
After startup though, no touch & this big software corruption chunk.
Hope you guys can help :crying:

Hello, this phone is in the Motorola Droid Razr section already. Says so on the top left. I couldn't find a forum for CDMA XT912 specifically so I suppose they are tied in with Droid Razr HD section. exactly. there is nothing hd in the xt912's name, it's just the droid rzr. it's a completely different chipset (omap vs qualcom) thus nothing is compatible. Here is a link to the differences just in case.
FINAL
Find it amusing no one could give me a straight answer & yet they call me inexperienced. Just saying. I read up on it myself. It becomes a Droid HD when it's GSM, Droid Razr XT912 when Verizon, & Razr for Rogers. My phone has both SIM Card Slot & CDMA Technologies, yes I know you must install CDMA OS only, which is what I did. My phone is Verizon. I am guessing no one know's how to fix this so I must set out to fix it myself. Which I was going to do but I thought people on this forum's Q & A would be faster.
People that argue simply do not know the answer.
I can't tell if you're trolling or if you just don't know how to read.
As the others pointed out, it's a completely different phone. Go the correct forum and you may get an answer... if you drop the attitude.

Instead of being combative why not look into what we've been saying.your phone is not a rzr hd and can never be a rzr hd.I already told you the main difference ie chipsets.it has nothing to do with cdma vs gsm.the gsm version of the hd is the xt925 vs the cdma version the xt926. You own a xt912. There is a difference in model numbers there, it's not just our made up idea. I've already provided a link showing you all the hardware differences between your phone and ours and someone else has provided the xda link to the actual rzr forum. I don't think English is your first language so I'll give you a pass but please respect the judgement of others here and stop acting like a prick especially when asking for help.if you truly didn't understand then you could have worded your posts alot differently.xda is a family and we try to help everyone but your attitude has put a sour taste in my mouth.

Second Thing:
If you read it up to yourself, sou shouldn't have any trouble reading stuff up to yourself again, just dont stop learning and read again.
Third thing:
I never actually heard of a phone called

But after googling a little bit, it seems that the normal Motorola Razr(XT912) was called Motorola Droid HD in some articles. For example here. Maybe this is the reason for this confusion...
fourth thing:
r u trolling?
fifth thing:
Your glitch could also be a hardware problem, cause it seems to affect only the lower part of the screen... Maybe you should post a better description on the razr forum. Sounds like there may be a problem with the digitizer...
sixth thing:
Please format your text a little, its so hard to read.
seventh thing:
try flashing newest sbf for your provider via rsdlite. That could also help.

[Q] Noob Questioner's

Hey guys. Just got this phone yesterday. Rooted and unlocked the bootloader last night. Love the phone! I wake up this morning to an OTA update request. I haven't installed any recovery yet. I'm on a 926 and the phone is running 4.1.2.... Honestly, I haven't figured out how to install a recovery yet. I don't want to brick this thing on day 2. I've done quite a bit of stuff and I realize now I need to get more educated before I screw something up. Heck I haven't even taken the time to understand the difference between the 925 and 926. So will it hurt anything taking the OTA?
It's not worth it to take it. Better off going with a custom rom.

So I guess I need to work on installing a custom recovery.. Just curious, what is wrong with the OTA update?

The OTA disables the hack that allows you to unlock the bootloader, but from everything I read if you have already unlocked the bootloader then you have nothing to worry about. It is still recommended to use a root keeper before taking the OTA update. The big advantage of the OTA is update radio drivers (better GPS, etc.)
OK, so, I'm rooted, unlocked, have rootkeeper installed and enabled, made a backup. If I take the OTA, can I get back to where I am now with my phone. I looked at each of the roms and they look OK.. Kinda happy with stock right now...

The stock is surprisingly okay from Motorola (once you freeze the Verizon bloatware), but I really enjoy having 4.2.2 (dashclock widget alone makes it worth the upgrade), customizable lockscreen (I was using WidgetLocker but it's never as smooth as built in), and the phablet UI with the quick settings panel. Have I tempted you enough to try a ROM? Also, stock icons and not the ugly Moto icons!

I've really only spent time with CM10.1 and have been very happy... a friend of mine has been going through the ROMs and he was excited about AOKP but now he's switching to Liquid can't remember why, some problems. From what I understand the CM ROM is likely to become official and that would be great so you can get the advantages of a fairly large eco system and constant development. Feel free to play around and try a ROM with halo (Pacman, Xenon, and some others seem to have it integrated) it looks really cool, but I'm not sure I would use it all the time.

So on Sunday, I made the mistake of "checking" to see if there was software update. There was. I did not want to update the phone, because I knew there was a good chance there was a root and unlock method out there for the current software version and wanted to investigate further. My only option was to "download now" or "download later" 12 hours.
12 hours came and went and I did not have the option to stop it. So I put it in WiFi mode and connected it to one of my WAPs that doesn't have internet access, which put a stop to the download. I did find a root/unlock method and went forward with it. Then the next question, what will happen when the download completes?
After rooting/unlocking the phone, I let the download complete, hoping that I didn't have to apply it. I got the option to postpone it once, but then it basically forced me. BegrudgingIy, I let it go before I could figure out a suitable root-keeper. Let me know what you use if you take the OTA and manage to keep root.
When it came back up after applying the patch, it seems I no longer have root access, but at least I have an unlocked bootloader so I can push ROMs if I want. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before Dan Rosenberg figures out a way around the new OTA patches. He has a reputation around here of being a Android ninja!
Can you get a custom recovery installed? You could flash a super user zip then.

If you flash a custom recovery through fastboot, you can then flash a super user zip using the custom recovery. No need to wait for a hack to the ota.

With an unlocked boot loader you have a lot of options, way to get the update from applying!
The craziest thing is that I'm really enjoying stock on the moto. Guys I have run every rom in the business. I've had the OG, the Droid X, NeXuS and a Razr, and now finally the RAZR HD.. I must say, I have had no lag, great connection and I've yet to find anything the phone has let me down on... I'm confused as to why this phone hasn't taken off!.. Have I forgotten to mention tha ti has an unlocked bootloader? Whats the deal?? I have not taken the OTA but I have gotten a message about it every 12 hours.. I know there is a way you can RSD back to the stock if you want it erikoink..
I may take the OTA.. If its better than this Stock Rom.. I'd be crazy not to
How do you like it erikoink????
I took the update without unrooting and used voodoo to restore it. I also had to install superuser then uninstalled it and supersu worked as normal.
No big changes with the update. The messages app doesn't display an incorrect unread message count which is nice.
I was a crack flasher with the gnex. But like you said, the phone just works. The only reason I unlocked my bootloader and rooted was to tinker with display resolution for an atrix lapdock.
I also don't know why the phone hasn't taken off. The lack of cases is irritating but I deal with it.
Been using my phone since March. Only important thing to remember is to restart the phone every few days or it looses some of its snap.
I decided to install "one power guard" but it's not really making that big of a difference. At first I was able to make it 2 days between charges and get almost 7 hours of screen on time. Now I can go a day and a half. I only have used a car charger three times and ALWAYS use the stock charger. Too risky.
This phone basically performs like my galaxy nexus but gets great battery life. I might get the note 3 in September but only if my battery life worsens.

How do you guys afford to upgrade so often?! Do you have family plans and steal upgrades?

I actually have been lucky on my upgrades. I had the Original Droid, I flashed sooooo many roms on it that it started getting buggy. Found a Droid X for 200 and snatched it up.. When my contract was up for the Orig Droid, I got the NeXus.. The volume on it was so bad that I couldn't stand it, so I went back to Verizon and traded it in on the Rezound. It was an AWESOME phone.. It has/had some GREAT devs.. I then found a Droid RAZR HD on craigslist because I will not upgrade and lose my unlimited data.. If I lose my unlimited on Verizon, it will be because they make me. I will then go to another provider as I am really pissed with VZW about this...
I freaking love this RAZR HD.. Might be my favorite phone so far.. Not sure why it doesn't have more Developers and ports....

Yes, 2 smartphones with grandfathered unlimited data, and 3 feature phones. Why on earth people with a similar setup would blow an upgrade on a feature phone is beyond me.
I'm sure this won't go on forever though.
My razr maxx hd was purchased at full retail but was then reimbursed because my phone at the time was damaged and did not have a comparable replacement available.
I find it completely hysterical that verizons new upgrade payment plan called edge is only for share everything plans. BS!

It's a love hate relationship. Verizon is very inconsistent with their CS. If I ever have a problem I basically prep myself to make 5 calls.

[Q] Razr Maxx HD Radio and Freezing

Hello, I am one of the IT Techs at Snow Summit in Big Bear Ca. and I manage the cell phone accounts and distribution. I have one user that I got a Verizon Razr Maxx HD and we have had nothing but problems and even had it replaced once. The phone freezes all the time with either a blank or active display misses calls and texts and has poor radio reception. We are long past the warranty return point so I am wondering if anyone has ever discovered what causes the freezing issue and can the radio be tweaked up somehow? I am pretty close to taking a gun to the phone and getting him a new G S4.
TIA
Mike

the phone just received an update which contains a newer radio. how could the phone not be under warranty? it was released in october of 2012, less than one year ago?
i would advise a factory data reset, freeze all the apps that arent used (a google search will provide a list of what you can disable). This really should be a great device for him/her with awesome battery life.
Is the phone unlocked and rooted? If its not you can definitely get some great troubleshooting over at the motorola owners lounge https://forums.motorola.com/hives/c531700a0f/summary

We tried running it in safe mode for 2 days and it still froze and rebooted. We did a full factory reset and it still acted up. We have checked for the update repeatedly and it has not been available. It is stock not rooted. I just ordered a Galaxy S4 for him. I will take the phone and sell it or use it as a back up. I still don't really think it is the phone I think the user wants an S4 or has done something that is contrary to the device working properly as this is the 4rth phone that has given him issues.

Have you done any troubleshooting with motorola? The phone has a 1 year warranty. I would have told him the s4 wasn't available and seen what his reaction was LOL. Heck you still should do that even though you have it ordered. I would say you possibly got a defective refurbished replacement and still should get it replaced once more before the s4 gets activated....

Nope never called Motorola. Maybe I will after I have it in my hands and don't need to deal with the user.
Sounds terrible and a waste of money. I think you should call Verizon right away to make sure that they replace the phone. With the s4 coming they may not cover it.

I used my own company upgrade for the replacement. I will take the phone for me as a BU phone. The user is a Director and budgeted for the replacement so it was just a do it situation. I like the Moto Phones if my own G S4 continues to be a PITA maybe I will get this Razr sorted out and switch over. then again I might be able to have it replaced by Motorola then sell it. I have a couple older Droid phones I am going to put up for sale soon maybe I can buy a couple months of dog food with the cash. <GRIN>
Ahh gotcha. Make sure you use coupons for the dog food. Target has great deals on iams fyi.
What issues are you having with your s4?

Coupons? My dogs eat meat not kibble lol.
The S4 for the past 2 days the battery went down way too fast. By 8:00PM I had to get it on the charger. Also the thing keeps asking if I want to go into global mode and now there is an update and I want to stay rooted.
Well I'm sure if you look, that voodoo root keeper would let you update and keep root.
Post a screen shot of your battery stats. Might have a bad app or your device isn't sleeping properly.

You might find this interesting. You can now root the s4 latest update with a SD card.
