[Q] Baseband version on an SGH-T959, Samsung Vibrant - General Questions and Answers

Baseband version on an SGH-T959, Samsung Vibrant
Greetings XDA Community!
Thank you for providing such an outstanding service. I have been lurking for quite awhile now and have been successful in rooting and customizing several phones using the information found here. I could not have done so without you... so thank you again!
Onto my question, and forgive me if my google-fu isn't up to snuff and I missed the answer in another thread...
I have an older Samsung Vibrant (SGH-959) Android Phone with the T959UVKA7 baseband version.
I have found a later baseband available for install: as seen on TMO's page... (as a new user, I cannot post URL. Sorry)
I performed the update on the Vibrant via the “Kies Mini” application and successfully booted into the updated OS, with baseband T959UVKB5.
However, whenever I install the ClockWorkMod Recovery, and flash CyanogenMod OS (I've tried all the versions (7.2, 10.0, 10.1, 10.1.2, 10.1.3RC) the baseband gets reverted back to the A7 over the B5. So... I re-installed (Oden'ed) back to factory OS, and Kies back to B5 to try again... but no deal, still reverts after flash.
My question is do I care? I am of the understanding that my crappy GPS performance, and related buggy behavior has been somewhat addressed by the later baseband... If I do care, how do I keep the phone at the later baseband when I flash ClockWorkMod or CyanogenMod?
I respectfully await some clarity on the issue. Thank you in advance! Cheers!

[Q] fido network issues (2.3.6)

I've been having network issues for the past 4 days (ever since I updated to 2.3.6) and have been scouring XDA and the internet trying to fix it...
Tried flashing stock roms, cyanogen roms, backtracking to 2.3.3, updating roms, flashing different radios, stock radios, nothings working.
I'm on the FIDO network with an unlocked nexus s
I even bought a new sim card today to see if it could fix it, and it was only "fixed" for a bit, because the reception was **** (0-1 bars) and i was on EDGE all the time.
I reflashed some radios and now I don't get network at all.
If anyone has any idea of how I could fix this, it'd be nice. As of right now I still can't seem to flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1056062 so I assume something about my phone still isn't stock...
2.3.6 is ruining my life. =[

There is advice on restoring your data connection in the radio thread in the dev section.
Sent from the future to put right what once went wrong.
I was assuming you meant this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884
I had already been on there and I've tried all the radios on the first few pages multiple times and none of them were working for me.
But since you posted your reply, I decided to try scouring the entire thread and I happened on a few random radios that other users posted.
I found one that actually worked!! and I got my signal back. THANKS.
Here is the one I used if anyone else is having the same problem as me.

Heartfelt thanks to steve.garon, Matridom, and idelgado782 for reposting since I couldn't find the original post.
You guys saved my phone!
Cool, glad you got it working!

Vibrant 4G Gingerbread update query

I accidentally posted this query in the standard Vibrant forum and they re-directed me here. So here's my initial query:
So I finally found out that the Galaxy Vibrant 4G (SGH-T959V) from T-Mobile now has an official update for Gingerbread. So since my mobile has been on Bionix Frost Custom ROM for long enough, I think I'll just update the phone. I'm aware that I'll loose the "root" feature, but my query is will I loose my network unlock? Also, will the contacts on the phone memory be wiped off too?
This is the first time I'm updating the phone. Since it was rooted before, should I bear some precaution before updating or is there a specific manner in which I should update?

I was planning on updating it via Kies. Kindly let me know if there is anything I need to keep in mind before proceeding with the update. I'm planning to update as per the method listed on T-Mobile website. Unfortunately, since I'm new to this forum, I can't seem to post it's direct link.

I don't recall losing anything when I updated with Kies. However, I would suggest making a backup of your data just in case. I sync my contacts with T-Mobile so even after I flash something that wipes the phone, the contacts sync back on their own.
I'm not sure if you can go from Bionix to KJ6 (2.3.6) using Kies Mini. Keis is picky about what ROM you're on with regard to updating. If it tells you that your phone's not registered, I'd suggest using ODIN to flash RaverX3X's ROM-ODIN-2.3.6-Gingerbread Offical. It's 100% based on the Kies Mini download but repackaged for ODIN for those having issues with Kies.
Thanks for the prompt reply Steve. Let's assume Kies DOES pick up my phone and confirms the Gingerbread update for it? Should I go ahead with it?
I don't see why not. You have nothing to lose by trying out the official kj6

I'm with Jager. Wifi signal strength is a little decreased, some people have had issues sending large text messages, but the phone is much more responsive.
Absolutely! My current ROM seems to be really buggy in places, thus depicting a rather poor picture of Android. So I was planning to try the stock ROM to see if it helped. So just to confirm, I won't loose my network unlock, correct?

I don't know about network unlock as I've not done that. However, this shouldn't mess with the /efs mount or it's contents, which is where I think the unlocks occur.
Someone else feel free to chime in on this one as I'm not sure.
You shouldn't lose your network unlock since that partition doesn't get touched by any updates.
I say you go for the upgrade but since you're already on a custom ROM, why not just use a custom KJ6 rom instead of the Kies version, you'll like it a lot more.
If you do wind up wanting a custom ROM, I recommend you click on the SGS4G Starter Pack link in my signature. Good guide.
Happy flashing!
That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying FB!
Cheers folks! I'll first flash to the stock ROM and if I feel the need to enhance it, I'll definitely move onto one of the custom ROM's. Thank you for all your help, much appreciated.

Help on a MF1 baseband upgrading it to "?"

Im a S4 and now a S5 user and this Verizion I535 S3 is looking scary. Two years ago I got the phone, unlocked the bootloader, installed a custom recovery, and installed CleanROM Seven. It has 4.1.2 Android Version with MF1 Baseband. With so many threads on updating to 4.3 and 4.4 is very bad with this version of phone, what options do I have? It's GPS is all mest up and hope to improve some battery by putting a new updated ROM on it. Can somebody point me in the right direction and show me some good options with links?

As far as roms you have many choices. Have you tried tightening the screws on the back of the phone? I've read people have had luck with that. I'd stay with the unlocked bootloader

Currently I flashed the latest TWRP and found a old Synergy Rom that's dated April 2013 that runs 4.1.2 and is MF1 based, other then that ROM can't find anything else that I believe would flash correctly. After installing the ROM, GPS was not fixed, and came across the "tightening of screws trick" As everybody has posted, it worked! Nevertheless, on day one got a random reboot and a forceclose on the camera. Still looking for ROM choices that I could use.

Glad to hear the screw option worked. You can always go with a rom that's not 4.1.2 based. There are plenty of custom roms out there for the S3

So I'm rooted with a USCC Galaxy S6... ROM Compatibility?

1. TWRP is up
2. Stock 5.1.1 with baseband G920R4TYU2BOF7/HW version G9020R4.02
3. Kernel name: 3.10.61-V-Kernel+
4. No Mods
5. Rooted
Last time, I did any rooting and flashing was the original Galaxy S Mesmerize for USCC... Been using that trusty phone up until 2 days ago. I finally broke down and upgraded after 5+ years! So I'm a bit rusty on this kind of stuff.
I know when I was flashing with the Mez, I had to make sure that I used carrier-specific ROMs since there were subtleties in hardware and so on. I was wondering which of the Custom ROMs in the pinned thread in the general section of this forum were compatible with a US Cellular Galaxy S6 with the specs I listed. Here is the link to the thread I'm speaking of. Also, any hints, clues, thing to look for etc etc in determining if a ROM is compatible would be awesome.

Once again, thank you guys for all that you do.
Edit: Somewhat off-topic... OTA update keeps wanting to come through. Will OTA update undo root?

Can the S3 i535 with 4.4.2 run CM13?

I have a Verizon S3 unlocked, no root, totally stock android 4.4.2 with baseband yudne1 and build kot49h.i535vrudne1
Want to confirm if I can install CM13 nightly. Everything I read indicates I need to root and update recovery and all that good stuff but it is not possible on 4.4.2
Just want to confirm if anything has changed in the past year with a new process. Forums have a lot of old guides so I would appreciate a quick yes or no. if yes, any link to a stable procedure would really be appreciated.
Thank you in advance. XDA is awesome and the people on this forum are some of the best.
Thanks,

Hey!
As @ShapesBlue says, if you took the OTA to 4.2.2 then you are locked. HOWEVER, there is a method developed by the typical enterprising XDA member that "Downgrades" the firmware by flashing part of the boot loader/firmware but leaves the crucial bit intact that doesn't brick the phone. Sort of a hybrid firmware flash. I believe it's supposed to open the phone up to flashing TWRP and non-stock custom ROMs. I know someone who used it and it worked on CM12.1 last year, but he also had some trouble after awhile (don't know if that was related to this procedure or not) and made an error later that bricked his phone, permanently it seems.
What isn't mentioned in that OP, at least the last time I looked, was that after doing this procedure, if you flash the firmware recommended in the CM12 and CM13 thread OP's, you will overwrite the partition that is spared in his zip file. Then you will be dead! He does explain exactly what partitions are flashed by telling you how to make the zip file. The updater-script I expect is not touched. Looking at it or in the other files you'll need to do this process will show you what's written where, but they have the partitions names. You can go into the CM12.1 thread OP on XDA for our phone and by clicking on the "d2vzw ROM Extras" link you can find all kinds of stuff, plus a few different partition tables that tell you how your phone is setup. There is other info in the OP itself about this and other topics related to flashing CM as well. (I'm the OP )
WARNING! Don't go into this haphazardly though. I would read through that thread thoroughly and see what if any success people are reporting, and ask questions. You don't want to ruin your phone!
It's in the "Android Development" forum in the root forum for our phone.
Report back on what you end up doing.:good:
