Hey, everyone. So I've been trying to figure out how to put ROM's on my Rogers Samsung Infuse 4G. I apologize if this frustrates anyone, I am usually pretty adept at figuring tech things out, however I've been browsing the web and these forums for about three days now and I am so utterly confused that it's beyond frustrating. Every time I manage to find a closely related thread or question I end up with dead links or down some tangent to alternate threads which in the end leaves me with more questions and confusion about how to actually do this. There is never a definitive "do this" thread. So, I've reached the point where I had to come on here and create my own thread.
Here's what I've done to this point;
I tried to root my phone using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197248 that thread. I don't know what happened but it somehow failed and bricked my phone. I was able to get it back up and running using the Odin Stock w/root in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193927 and that's where I sit now.
I've gathered that I need to get CWM and a modded recovery file to be able to flash with a ROM and that's where the problems begin.
I downloaded ROM manager and ES File Explorer to find and rename my recovery file, only to find there is no recovery file in my Bin folder.
From there I've read just about every thread possible and this has lead me to just be more confused, mostly because I can't find many threads pertaining to the specific model I have and I'm paranoid as hell to brick my phone by doing/installing something incompatible.
My phone is a Rogers Samsung 4G Infuse. Model SGH-I997R. Using GB 2.3.3 and I gather my baseband version is relevant as well, it's I997R UXKG3.
If someone could walk me through how on earth to sort this out, or point me in the direction of some active and actually useful threads, that would be amazing!

it makes no difference if you are on att or rogers if you are trying to flash a custom rom.
after you flash, the only difference is the APN - needs to be set to rogers.
use any of the stock rooted packages in the dev section
use odin or heimdall
jscott30 has odin packages avail to get you the cwm you need
i had a uclb3 stock with recovery also
alternatively, you can just use one of the custom gb kernels via odin or heimdall..flash the kernel to get cwm and flash what ever you want
advice:
search and read
gl
I have the problem flashing my friend's i997r, when i do i it reboots into recovery n never goes into the actual os. Phones goes to the galaxy s cyanogenmod screen and boots into recovery each time.

So I flashed a wrong rom and I've been trying to unbrick for a few weeks now - anyone got advice?
I get into download mode but when I try to flash with Odin it just gets stuck at setting Pit file...
When I try to use the toolbox heimdall.exe crashes when trying to download pit file
Is the phone done? Is there a paperweight rom for this model?
Update:
I was able to unbrick, the issue was localized to my computer and running the stuff on another one was fine. I've uploaded the files I used for unbrick for your convenience.

You obviously did not read any of the threads stickied at the top of each forum before destroying your $400 cell phone. Read what's already been posted on this subject and you'll find your answer.

all you really have to do is.... SEARCH XD jk
but just put the OG PDA file in i think. and start it.
thats an example of not reading and dude, come on if the rom is for another phone... well, that says it all...
anyway, go to developer section and try the heimdall methods over there

The phone can be found for about $200 online. However, money is money, although it has different values to each person.
From what you're saying, it seems like your phone can still be recognized by Odin. Look for RaverX3X's KC1 Odin ROM. It might be able to bring your phone back to life.
If that doesn't work, you can try the unbrickable mod. However, if that also doesn't work, then you got yourself a fancy brick. It's a lot of tedious work.
The solutions I provided you could be found on this forum very easily if you searched. Since you came from another forum, it would be common sense to search for possible answers to your solution.
Thanks I'll try those. Most likely it will just hang on 'putting Pit' but we'll see.
I just want to point out to some of the repliers:
I did search, and I looked at a lot of stuff and some of you people need to get off your high horse about "searching" it is the lamest thing ever if you don't have anything useful to add just don't.

First off, Thanks to everyone for the posts and for future patience.
I know there has been a lot of discussion on this subject, but I seem to have elevated it to a new level of loopy. Bear with me, please; I'll make whatever changes needed. I have researched/read a lot tried many of the recommended procedures and frankly, I think it has all become mud stew in my head. My wife is none too happy, and if you guys could help me save my genitals/marriage, I'd be much appreciative.
The facts: 1 T-Mobile SGS4G t959v, 1 Mac os X 10.6.8, 1 Heimdall 1.3.1 and 1 ticked-off wife.
So, following the xda forum, I successfully rooted the device. Then I downloaded ROM manager and installed CwM (now I realize the error of my ways), downloaded and flashed Bionix. Phone looped "3e" recovery.
After much research, found heimdall on XDA, and was able to get the recovery image changed to CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v3.0.2.8x. Now, I'm looping that recovery. Tried the bali 3.3 kernel, flashed just fine. found sgs4g official gb2.3.6....Rom, flashed just fine. Still, I remain at the red voodoo screen.
Obviously, I can access the sd card through my mac, and have tried various update.zip procedures, and various ROMs.
So, I've been reading for several days now, poring over these and other forums, and if I understand it correctly, bali3.3_heimdall.tar.gz (thank you very much!) is supposed to undo the ROM manager screw up from earlier (and I can only think that I am missing some critical info here), but no, still looking at the voodoo recovery.
I AM kind of new to this, however I have rooted and modded 4- MyTough 3g's and a defy, All running CMx.
Thanks again,
SN
Try disabling voodoo lag fix and see if that helps

Thanks again,
it's done, with no change.
You are aware that Bali3.3 is a Froyo kernel? If the last rom you flashed was GB 2.3.6 then try flashing a GB kernel and make sure your mounts are correct.
missed the bali/froyo. does this imply that I might flash a froyo rom over bali? or do I need to flash a gb kernel for the 2.3.6 rom? Also, I'm using heimdall and I don't know how to use non-.tar files with it; or if you can.

Hello all,
I've been lurking the XDA forums for a couple months now. I had a couple posts in the past referring to my phone and my girlfriends phone and was looking for help mainly with hers at the time... Hers is fixed... Perfectly even, despite her phone being a total piece of garbage (an LG Optimus.... *barf*).
I have a SGH-T959V.
I have read the 10 commandments.
I KNOW my phone is NOT a Vibrant OR an i900.
I have read the noob guides.
I have become completely confused.
Here's my details:
I have running the stock GB that I installed with Kies Mini some time ago.
Phone Data:
Firmware Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: T959VUVKJ6
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKJ6-CL694130
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
I rooted my phone with one of the one-click apps after the stock GB update so that I was at least able to overclock it and get rid of the T-Mobile bloatware, etc.
I notice that my phone reboots entirely on it's own completely randomly, has random application hangs, all the bad icky stuff that sucks... (right????)
Anyways, I've looked at some of the Custom ROMs available and I'd like to check out some of them, but I'll be quite honest, I've read the instructions for how to do it, but I'm getting extremely confused as the current instructions seem rather daunting.... It's like information overload...
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not some kid that really doesn't know what he's doing... I'm 33 and work in IT for The Nielsen Group... so I kinda know what the heck I'm doing MOST of the time. This is something I'm unfamiliar with and am being EXTREMELY cautious about because i don't want to brick my phone....
Question time!:
1. Is there a COMPLETELY SIMPLE step-by-step process/Video Demonstration for the CORRECT method of how to put a custom rom on the SGH-T959V?
2. Does it matter that I ALREADY rooted my phone in respect to me loading a custom rom? (ie. is my already rooted phone going to have issues loading a different rom?)
3. I would like to stay with a GB based rom unless there is absolute NEED to use a Froyo based Rom - Or is this a non-point when using custom roms?
4. If i want to load a custom rom to my phone, do I need to use a specific loader? (Like, does Odin work for everything??? Loading roms and unbricking your phone? Or do I have to have different loaders for the specific roms that I want to load and try out????)
5. Please don't jump down my throat with the "read the guide" responses... I HAVE been... really. As many as I've found... and every time I read a new one, rather than feeling like I'm coming out of the darkness of knowledge and into the light of understanding the correct process for how to do this, I feel like I'm being cast deeper down the confusion pit.
Would someone KINDLY please help me. Really... I don't want to screw up this thing... I'm not worried about the warranty. From what I've read, these things are mostly fixable unless it's an actual hardware issue or if it's totally fried. I just want to do it once, do it right, move on to my next project.... Dig?
First and foremost, we keep the most updated information in the wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G
We've been updating it a lot lately so you're better off checking there. I'm sure you'll wanna bookmark it since you know what you're doing already.
1) Specifically you'll want to look at this section:http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G#Installing_a_ROM
2) If you're using Odin/Heimdall you won't need to be rooted since this bypasses the phone's OS and flashes firmware directly to the phone which may or may not be pre-rooted. The only Odin 2.3.6 KJ6 rom that's out right now does NOT come with root though, it's just the stock version you're already running.
3) For our phone you're either going to use Odin/Heimdall (learn Heimdall, it's much more useful) and CWM Recovery. Most roms available right now are for CWM.
Here's the list of custom GB roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G_ROMs
4) Honestly the forums are too cluttered and as I stated above, knowledgeable senior members are the ones who update the wiki, so that'll be your most useful resource.
If you already have some experience with computers I'll gladly help you, you're already asking the right questions.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

When I last played with my phone, I had used Odin on Windows... I have replaced Windows with Linux... I have installed Heimdall and did an initial test. So it is working.
My question is: Is Heimdall a valid replacement for Odin? In other words, I am wanting to use your guide, but it only refers to Odin. Can I go through those steps replacing Odin with Hamdall?
Yes it should work fine. The csc files for kc1 should be extracted over the pda files though

FBis251,
Thank you so much for the quick reply! I had seen it immediately after you responded, but was driving home from work and went right to bed. I'm back at the office now for the evening and perhaps may have some time to look into these tonight... I don't know as of right now.
If you are serious about the offer of some assistance, I would be more than open to it if I honestly felt it was needed. I am MORE than experiences with computers, i'm a full on uber-geek (just not with smartphones...... yet....), so VNC, etc would not be an issue.
I will most certainly get back to you about this in the next few days (perhaps even tonight). Let me see how my work load looks this evening and I will update the thread later.
Thank you again so much!
I'm usually in #teamnerd on freenode if you do IRC.
It doesn't take much to confuse me these days...
Moved my issue into a new question in the Q&A forum...
Hey, just an FYI (even tho I'm sure that ultimately you don't really care - just being realistic, not a douche... ), I haven't had a single moment to look into this beyond briefly skimming the Wiki's you linked up for me. (thanks for that one). I've had a butt-load of server issues at work that have taken a lot of my time. I'm HOPING to be able to look into some of this stuff a little deeper tonight (god willing)....
I will drop a note if I have issues....
Thanks again!
Hey everyone.
Im generally pretty savvy with androids. I rooted and S-offed my HTC Desire, I had a nexus S for a bit until it got ran over... Now im stuck with this Galaxy S 4G, which has been nothing but headaches because for some reason... this thing is impossible to root to me. Ive tried Hemidall, Super1clicks, Odin etc..
Can someone please just point me in the direction of rooting this POS? Im hoping that once its rooted and running stock, I wont hate this thing as much... because so far, Its a horrible purchase.
I just need someone to post a link to where I need to be. Ive searched.. and im absolutely lost. Even the Rootz wiki was useless to me.
Thanks.

Read that then understand what bhundven means by DONT FLASH BOOTLOADERS!!
You can use the heimdall one clicks he created to get root access and then flash any rom that DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS INCLUDED. That means do not use gremlin remover period. Once you get rooted make a backup and keep it stored in as many places as possible. If you flash the ics variants you will have to use the stock kj6 HOC and then need to flash the HOC for antonx kernel to get root back. At that point you can flash your nandroid or whatever rom you want. AGAIN AS LONG AS IT DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS included.

Meh, forget it... im selling this phone. There is no convincing me to ever buy anything from Sammy again unless its a Nexus line.

Thanks guys
Reading is hard
"Can I get step by step directions please?"
Sure, here you are!
"What?! Your not going to remotely root my phone for me? F this place"
Good luck sir, you have the patience of a saint and the drive of a tiger!
OK let's be honest you gave up kinda quick.......
The forum that eollie linked you to was a forum talking about the phone that you bought, which is an apparent offshoot of the t-959v and according to what Masonite found out, "our" roms work on the t-959w but you cannot flash the bootloaders.
Here is the one click link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498 just boot into download mode and use this but absolutely don't flash bootloaders and it should be OK, no promises.
Eollie was right for linking you there, all the info you needed about your model phone was on that forum, that one click is in the dev sticky which everybody should read.
There has been a flood of people not researching a little bit first before posting and that's why people flamed you but you should not give up, its a good phone and our devs are dedicated and have put in a lot of time on this model, you should be happy your phone can even support all the great roms that are available.
I'm not being mean but seriously, come on, all the info is there, no need to get mad.

Edit: or Google search how to use heimdall if your confused, I learn off a damn YouTube video..........
Our devs didn't create heimdall and don't support it but it is a great program and the dev has to build the individual one click for the phone, we should be happy to have it that easily available.

You'll need to flash one of the back to stock files that you got linked to in that thread which will put you on stock GB with no root. DO NOT FLASH THE BOOTLOADERS. You'll very likely brick if you do.
After this download the AntonX kernel from bhundven's one click thread and flash that. That will give you a custom kernel with CWM built in and root.
Needless to say, this is all for the SGH-T959V which theoretically should work on the SGH-T959W. As you'll read any disclaimer on this forum, you're resposible for anything you flash and the damage that may occur to your device.
Thanks for that fb I forgot a few steps if he wants to be on mtd roms, I assumed he could read from that point............ but your right for knowing better

Thank you very much, and I'm sorry for getting angry. I've had this phone for almost 4 months now, and haven't been able to do anything with it. Quite frustrating.
So, I currently have the Tmobile ROM on my phone, so I'm halfway there it appears!
I'm going to download the other ROM as soon as I get home.
Thanks so much! Next up.. Learning to flash with Odin, and not ROM manager.
It seemed like everything I tried wasn't working with 2.3.6. Superoneclick etc.
I was waiting for a new exploit, but it never came. I tried YouTube tutorials, text directions.. Everything would fail, or give me "read only" errors. I feared bricking, so I stopped.. But I searched the forum and came across the thread he linked me to, but it said no bootloaders, and all the ones I saw had bootloaders. Wasn't until tonight that I noticed it's a 2 part flash process, with the second being the bootloaders.
I think I started this thread at 3am.
Lesson learned.
In heimdall, you can click a little box that says "flash bootloaders" to toggle flashing them on and off! .... or maybe it was odin? I can't remember... been a while since I used them!
After being away for the weekend, I came home, and BAM... fully rooted. Amazing! and FINALLY!!!
Thanks everyone for your help...
I just have another issue.
I wanna flash this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145
It says its CWM.. but there is a huge disclaimer that we shouldn't use ROM Manager on the development page, which is a bit confusing. Since this ROM isnt Odin flashable... what do i do?
Thanks again.
So I was confused about this when I first started. I'm not at my computer but I can help. In order to flash Roms via cmw you have to turn off your phone hold both volume rockers on the phone then hold the power button and hold till you get into cwm recovery. That will get you into cmw recovery mode. Then wipe data factory rest, from there go back to the main menu and select the install zip from sd card and find the zip file you want to flash and select it and install. Should be good to go.

Nevermind... im a complete goon. I got it, lol.
Thanks
So I rooted my at&t infuse. I now owned it for just over a year, so the warranty on it is out. Here's what I'm so unsure of...
Googling til the cows came home, I thought I discovered that the official gingerbread update brought me to uclb3 2.3.6 or some such thing. I had the ulk2 or something? The unofficial leak back in Feb. Anyhow, found a way to root .6 on youtube. Followed along the whole way, pausing, rewinding, playing and pausing again. The guy on the video was using 'odin'. Finally, (long story short and after my heart started beating again), my screen said 'pass' just like his did and my phone rebooted. (thats when my heart started beating again, lol). So I was googling again, just to see what 'flashing roms' meant. I even had to look up 'rom'. All I wanted a rooted phone for was to get rid of those apps that at&t installed on my phone and I can't uninstall. Which I accomplished. But googling flashing a rom, somehow I stumbled upon another youtube video. This one was of some guy saying if you're not a rogers infuse owner, turn the video off now. So I watched. And he used 'odin'.
Did I root it right?
The only "problems" I'm having with my phone is with the wifi. When I click on fb, it says connection lost. I have to turn on data to use it. But if I click on the web icon, or play store, I can connect. Is it a root issue, or facebook update issue?
Baby steps with me now! I need the 'rosetta stone' version of your reply, haha! This is totally foreign territory for me!
Whether you are rooted or not really depends on what package you flashed with Odin.
On 2.3.6, to root you need to flash a custom kernel, such as entropy's dd kernel.
I suggest you take a look at the super iset thread stickied on the dev thread. You will find everything you need there.
also search on the q&a and general sections.. You should find many threads with detailed instructions
It may be helpful if you go back to the beginning of the Q/A section and read up on the earlier thread and work your way forward. It will familiarize you with the "lingo"
You can also start at the, "How To" thread for some basic info. That thread is pack with lots of info. You may need to read it several times to understand.

I really appreciate that you took the time, and hopefully after Christmas and New Years, I'll have time to skim through!
Thanks for your time!
(is there anyway to delete this thread now?)
It's super easy. With a pc install kies...then run qkster's one click. Directions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
Then run entropys the same way. From same post.
Once you have recovery flash anything you want...
If you flash cm9, and it boots up in rainbows , start these directions over but flash qkster's oneclick twice. Second time have bootloaders checked.
Always flash cm10 only after cm9 or cm10 is on. (never cm7 to cm10)Follow instructions and ask questions in step form. Say "ok so I flashed this here, how do I flash this"
And always flash gaps after you flash your custom rom. (even just upgrades reflash gapps)
Newbie flashing
If I can add a little, you could use Odin. After you install Kies (for the drivers) look for GTG's Unbrick. Flash it. Boot it up.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Then load that into Odin. Flash it. You can connect your phone, turn on usb, then look in my computer. You will find your phone "drives" there. Add a rom you downloaded, Boot into recovery, do a reset/dalvik/clean and install zip from sd card. Choose the new zip, and hit the power button to start the rom installation. Check out Youtube. They all basically install the same way.Hope it helps. Learn to use the unbricking stuff they have made, and thank them.
