Closing the lid, puts it into sleep mode. So it probably won't work.

Also are you wanting to play the music through the shield or connected to something else?
Because if it's through the shield I'm guessing it won't sound good anyways since you're covering up the speakers.
I use winamp and also play music . I can close the shell and it sounds a bit muffled but still doable in a pinch. It does not set that to sleep.

how about just playing with screen closed while i use bluetooth? or wired? that way the screen don't have to run and burn battery...also, it'll keep the shield closed, just need to play music.

Is anyone else getting a little popping noise from the speaker just after turning the device on? My speaker is also popping sometimes when playing games instead of making a sound.. for example when playing THD Pinball when the ball hits a bumper sometimes it pops instead of the normal noise.
Does anyone else have a pop on startup or any other time? Hoping my device isn't faulty :/

yes, I get the same popping when turning it on. I also get it when some kind of audio is starting, e.g. a You Tube video or any kind of music. It's very short and doesn't really bother me. Does anyone else have this issue?
I get popping noise as well. I have the 32GB version. I guess it's when an application needs to use the audio it turns on the speakers and you get that pop.
I occasionally get popping noise also. I got 16GB version.
The pop when powering up is actually the auto-focus shutter on the back camera.
I am hearing this on occasion as well.
Well sounds like it's very common then. The odd thing is I don't remember mine doing this until I updated my firmware to the latest.

I also hear it on mine and since I have sensitive ears... it does bother me. Is this a defect? Or is it happening all the Asus Transformer?
I get the same, most noticable when the volume is very low and I am typing.
Every doven key presses I hear a pop instead of a keyboard click.

mine pops as well, when listening to music or selecting new videos on youtube
Ok were all popping, what do we do now?
I think we either exchange it, or live with it. The one that I had before it turned into a brick from the fota didnt have any popping sounds.

I also noticed the popping when powering the device on and occasionally while listening to audio, but it is nothing major.
Yes mine has just started doing this when it starts up too.

The popping you hear at start up is actually the camera.. If you listening by the camera that's where the sound is coming from. It's a part(guessing the shutter) moving when the unit is powered on.. I noticed it too and thought maybe it was trying to play a boot up sound that didnt exsist lol. But then someone told me it was the camera and I listened the next time and they were right. If your speaker is popping while the unit is on and playing music that's not a good sign. but that and the pop (or clicking) at start up are two different things..
I am getting the popping too. Also have the latest firmware. 16gb version only a few days new.
One note though to users stating this a "shutter" issue... where are your sources for this? It is most definitely the speakers. The camera doesn't even have a shutter. Does it? No lens. Why would it have a shutter? Its not the same mechanism as a digital camera, or dslr. Kinda strange?

how bloody sensitive are your ears when a op from speakers turning on/off bothers you?
90% of desktop speakers do this as well you know.

You need to clean your ears the clicking I hear at start up is for sure coming from the camera.. put your ear up to it when you boot it..
wait to clarify, do the speakers pop before/after sound starts playing or during?
if its before/after then you honestly are an overly whiney bunch.

yeah.. how sensitive are you're ears??? lol I have very sensitive years.. I'm a musician that plays everything by ear. The clicking sound does not bother me at all.. what drives me more nuts is the uneven sound from left and right.. that's driving me up the wall. I feel off balanced.. lol
Is anyone else receiving intermittent crackling sounds when playing music while using a headset or not. Any ideas?
Nope, everything sounds perfect to me. It could be something wrong with the headphones, headphone jack or the music app that you are using. If the problem persists, I would just use my warranty and get a new one.

i am having the same crackling/pop noise issue when i tried to do BT audio streaming on my samsung galaxy s3, i have used my PC's BT 3.0 as well as the BT 2.1 Audio Receiver but they all exhibited the same problem. this seems like a problem with the BT driver, or audio profile in the phone.

Thanks, Will keep that In mind If I ever do use my headsets for the S3 also If I do experience the pop/crackle issue.
I get the same crackle from time-time with the standard music player. I also use MOG, and have never experienced it there.
I just got an S3 32gb for VZW. Almost freaked out it crackled horribly when going into screen save mode. It did this with the same mp3's Ive had for years on numerous devices & with the speaker, wired/bluetooth headsets. Tried all the power settings etc no help. Poweramp fixed it! Thank you
My friend had the same issue so he just used a different music player and the cracking noise is gone.

What to you mean???Elaborate what???
I am having this problem as well. After using my Bluetooth headset the volumes will not return to the levels I had without the Bluetooth headset connected. It also happens on my Galaxy Nexus running Kit Kat so I think it is an OS issue. I do notice that the volume icon that comes up on the screen when attempting to change the volume is different than normal as it doesn't have the 2 "soundwaves" coming out of it. I have yet to find a fix other than turning the phone off and back on.

EDIT: nvm, I get it.
Google results suggest that the problem may be due to dirt in the jack.
I tried an app about a minute ago, that called SoundAbout and seems is a good temporary solution for the problem. If someone else tried something else and it worked for him please let me know.

This same thing happens to me. Its weird whenever i connect my bluetooth the audio starts to come out of the device's earset (where you put your ear). I have to restart the phone to fix it until I connect a bluetooth again. When I use the volume buttons I see a different bar (like when you are on a call or something) instead of the bar to adjust ringtone's volume. It is super annoying. Sometimes music comes out of the speakers but if I open an app that speaks over bluetooth (waze for example) the music audio stops coming from the speakers and starts coming out the ear speaker on the phone..
What I do to replicate this is to connect a bluetooth headset. Turn on music (google music) open waze.. Audio starts coming out the ear speaker instead of the phones speaker..
Any fix??

Did you find any other solutions for the problem?
I too have this issue. Same on two handsets. Connect to bluetooth and works fine. Disconnect and all future audio comes out of earpiece hole until you reboot and then back to the speaker.
Anyone found a solution for this? I have the same problem.
Workaround

I may have a workaround for this issue.
This problem has been driving me crazy. The first time after a reboot, my Nexus 5 connects to my car audio just fine via bluetooth. But after I shut the car off, the phone's speaker is turned off, and all audio plays through the earpiece. Additionally, the next time I try to connet to my car's Bluetooth, it will no longer play audio through the bluetooth connection (although I can still control the device via bluetooth).
Rebooting the phone fixes it, but it's a pain to always be turning the phone on and off, and if I'm already in my car, it won't re-establish the connection if I restart my phone while the car's still running.
I downloaded the free 'Fast Reboot' app, which essentially closes and restarts all core user processes. Sure enough, launching 'Fast Reboot' seems to fix the problem... at least until the next time I disconnect.
It seems something in Kit Kat is locking the audio to the earpiece after a bluetooth disconnect. I've got my fingers crossed that the upcoming Android update fixes this problem for good. :fingers-crossed:
In the meanwhile, let me know if Fast Reboot does the trick for you too.
Thanks for the workaround, it works well. I think google will fix this in the next update, it only says "Bluetooth fixes" right now but what else are they gonna fix? Well, i hope they will.
I recently got my Nvidia Shield for Christmas and upon installing the ATT LTE data Sim I seem to have a crackleing sound when using data. It does not make the sound while not using data example just playing music or games but it will if I'm listening to music and say... Search the web or anything like that. The noise doesn't happen when using WiFi or listening over the tablet speakers.
I have another sound problem that occurs seldomly when playing music over the speakers (both with WiFi and LTE). The tablet makes a, what I call, transformer like noise; the noise to the best I can describe sounds like a medium tone zap not high pitched.
Does anyone else have these problems and how do I fix them/do I need to sent this one back?
We have discussed a similar thing here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2995852
Is this the sort of thing you mean?
Thanks
I get the digital sound stretch/squelch "transformer" noise you're referring to sometimes. I'm not sure how you'd fix that: I think it's a quirk of this tablet.

I don't have the crackling happen to the speakers only the squelch.
I get it some times, I've had it happen when there are a lot of apps going, and if an app hits high cpu load it seems. It'll do it for a moment, and clear up for a while. Closing down the backgrounded apps seems to help me. YMMV
Edit: You running latest update? I noticed it start after the 5.0.1 update.

I've had this same issue on every version of the OS. I've had the tablet since a week after release in August and have run every update on the tablet and still get the noise, sometimes it is rather loud. It seems to do it more when stressing the tablet, I used to have Real Racing 3 on the tablet with the graphics modded to run at their highest, it would occasionally freeze up, and when it resumed, the speakers would squeak nearly every time.
I may not have just noticed it prior. But yours appears to be the same that mine is doing.

Phone is brand new, stock ROM, and completely updated.
Issue 1: Thin protective layer (feels like glass or hard plastic) is off-centered on the left side of the screen and creates a rough edge when using the phone. Pic URL: s2.postimg.org/iufhb6d9l/screenshot_41.png (Sorry, I can't post links yet.)
Issue 2: Volume and sound randomly changes when listening to audio with headphones and using the phone. I'll be listening to music on Spotify and when I start switching between apps the music will start to sound worse and lower the volume for a second or two and then return to normal.
Issue one sounds like the factory installed screen protector. I peeleed mine off first day and still have a scratch free phone.
I have not experienced issue two.
I agree with the post above regarding the protective layer, but the 2nd issue sounds weird. I use often headphones, at least once for day, and i never noticed volume going up and down randomly. Later I'll give a try opening various apps while listening to music and I'll let you know.

Thank you! I would really appreciate that. The volume and audio quality will fluctuate together for a second or two then goes back to normal.

Mmmm... Sounds like an app (or more) that you open while using Spotify detain the precedence on audio focus if compared to Spotify, and so the sound of Spotify becomes ducked for the usual amount of time on sound ducking contest, and usually it is just a couple of seconds. If this don't bother, can i ask you the name of the app/s that make Spotify's music function ducked? It could be a game like an other app that uses the speaker, so mind at those who reproduce some sound while using I'll try to help ya since that i didn't noticed volume changes while using headphones (but i premise that i have only a SNES emulator on my phone as game, and when i play with it, i let music off so i couldn't test with modern games like the ones available on Play Store)
