Using play store, calendar, gmail and Google now
They way I install these are
1) name the app you're replacing ie. MMS.apk to MMS.apk.bak , also do the same for the matching odex file
2) copy the inverted app to system/ app and change permissions to rw-r-r
3) reboot
Note: may not work with jcases method of gaining root, my boot loader is unlocked

thanks for this! Though I can't seem to get Gmail to install.. how did you go about getting rid of the system app? Titatium Backup doesn't seem to be doing the trick for me...
I haven't even begun to try any ones that require recovery.. just rooted my X and can't quite figure out to get into recovery easily.. is it as as simple as using Quick Boot? anyway to tell if it's in recovery without ADB?
thanks!

I deleted it with an app like titanium backup. After that you just need to reboot your phone and installed the inverted APK and all is well.
This method works for just about all the system apps. Just remember to Make a backup before you start cutting away.

yep Email didn't work.
Unfortunately I stopped using Blackout apps because of a bug. Every time I would install any Blackout apps, my Hangouts would develop a weird scrolling bug (even if I didn't install blackout hangouts at all). On normal Hangouts when you type a message and send it, it should scroll to the very bottom. But when mine was bugged, it never scrolled after I typed a message, unless someone replied. I could scroll manually but still, drove me nuts. Reinstalling hangouts and it's lib dependance didn't fix it. Reverting blackout apps didn't fix it either. Tried wiping cache, dalvik, wiping hangouts data, nothing. I had to do RSD Lite complete clean flash to make it work properly again.
I really wish I could have them on, if it weren't for the hangouts bug.
Anybody find a dark MMS apk that still retains the square chat bubbles that the stock one has? I played around with every theme option for this one and I couldn't get it to match the stock app.

It's not the same.
So, is there any way to do this on a verizon one (locked bootloader)? In my attempt to install the blacked out mms, I tried flashing the zip from stock recovery, but it failed to verify. Tried installing the Mms.apk from the zip via adb and pm, and it said INSTALL_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES
so then I signed it with a key as per android doc, and then I got INSTALL_FAILED_UID_CHANGED. so i figured out it was because the /data/data/com.android.mms was still hanging around. removed that, tried again and got INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT. That's where i stopped.
I'm starting to think i'll have to wait till there's safestrap for moto x. If not then let me know what i need to do!

Just manually install it with any root explorer but before you replace your existing MMS apk , rename it to MMS.apk.bak. Change permission to rw-r-r and reboot.

Can you explain what you mean by "manually install it" ? If you mean clicking the apk file and and hitting install, that doesn't work for me. from Root Browser, with system mounted as read write, it just says "App did not install"
If I just copy to /system/app and change permissions, it doesn't actually install it. it's not listed as an app in my applications.
I did figure out that I can restore the titanium backup by mounting /system as read write and restoring the backup, so i have my messaging back, just really want to get blacked out working!
EDIT: another thing I tried was replacing the apk file in the titanium backup with the blacked out apk. That also did not work. Titanium backup just sits there spinning with "restoring app"

Any chance you're using jcase's root method? You use any root file explorer , copy the MMS apk , go to system/app and change the existing MMS.app to MMS.apk.bak and also the odex mms file, then copy the inverted mms .apk and change the permissions to rw-r-r

Okay, tried your way. It doesn't matter whether I remove Mms.apk, rename it to Mms.apk.bak, or straight overwrite it with the other. Every time the original Mms.apk leaves the /system/app folder, it is removed from the list of installed apps. The Messaging app literally disappears off the screen.

Yep, I I accidentally the whole thing. I clicked the wrong button in TIBU.
Anyways, I got the phone yesterday, updated it to 2.3.6, and rooted it, but otherwise left it alone. I just rooted so I could restore my apps from my previous phone with TIBU. I did not restore data. Today, I was trying to fix an issue I was having with accounts and sync, and I meant to freeze it, but I hit uninstall and wasn't paying attention to the prompts, so it uninstalled it. It was backed up, but I can't re-install it. I even found the app's .apk in system/app folder, and tried to re-install it but it will not, it just tries for like a second and then says "Not installed". The option is now missing from my settings menu.
I would really like a way to fix it without having to wipe and re-install the OS, but if I have to I can.
nb4 "did you search?" yes, I did. I couldn't find anything that helped.
Thanks in advance, everyone.

I did that, but the Applications and Sync option is not there.
If I did a recovery update to 2.3.6 again, would that fix it perhaps? or will it not let me update it that way since it's already on 2.3.6?

Installation Option 2:
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone. This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 from one of the mirrors above.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
5. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 4 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
6. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
7. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 7, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

I personally used root explorer and changed the original gmail apk to Gmail2.bak (yours may either be in system/app or data/app) mine was in data/app because im using AOSP, for stock touchwiz it might be in system/app. For AOSP its probably going to be named com.gmail.apk or something along the lines of that. Anyways after you delete/rename your original one move the 4.2 Gmail2.apk to system/app, set the permissions and reboot. It MUST be in system/app and you have to set the permissions and reboot for it to work

Gotta lock this up,the new app is considered warez. Google doesn't want this being distributed.
I've been doing some searching around the web and haven't been able to find a fix for this yet. I flashed the latest Jelly Bean leak last night and noticed that the circle notifications on the lockscreen are gone (the ones for missed calls/new messages). I saw a fix for the Galaxy Note II that involved changing a file name and that would bring those back. Is there any way to bring them back on the S3?

Simple fix. You need a File Explorer app that has Root permissions, access to Root directory, and can mount System files as writable (I recommend ES File Explorer).
In you file explorer, navigate to "/system/csc/" and rename "customer xml" to "customer xml.bak".
Restart your phone. The Lock icon and "verizon wireless" text will be gone from your lockscreen, and the bubble notifications will be back.
I've tried that using CleanRom5 and it didn't work for me :-/

I'm not sure what you guys are doing, but this solution definitely works and has been done by hundreds of people successfully.
My guess is that you don't have the proper root permissions to change the file name (it's a system file). Do it using ES File Explorer. Go into the ES File Explorer settings, go into the Root Settings, and check all of the boxes. Then rename the file. It works on CleanRom 5, I am 100% positive of that.
I have no yet flashed CleanRom5.5, but I am 99% positive this same solution will work on that as well.

I've used root explorer in ROM toolbox and ES both. I've followed the steps outlined above, doublechecked that the rename took and rebooted several times. And this is the results.

In you file explorer, navigate to "/system/csc/" and rename "customer xml" to "customer xml.bak".
Restart your phone. The Lock icon and "verizon wireless" text will be gone from your lockscreen, and the bubble notifications will be back.

This worked for me on Stock-Rooted. Thank you.

I've used root explorer in ROM toolbox and ES both. I've followed the steps outlined above, doublechecked that the rename took and rebooted several times. And this is the results.

Your using aosp msg app. Or gosms. I'm unsure but the looks of your screen shot that's the problem. You have to be using the tw mms app. Hope that helps

Yes, the bubble notifications ONLY work with the TouchWIZ messaging and dialer apps.
Just did this on stock k3. Thanks!

Ahh... I thought since I replaced the SecMms apk that it would still work.
I was able to do that fix, but every time I unlock the phone, it shows the hint "swipe this notification to see new messages" or whatever. I changed it back because that was annoying me, but it just kept coming back. If anyone knows a fix, let me know. I miss my bubble notifications.

I'm glad you mentioned this, because it was happening to me too. Go into Application Manager>All Apps and find the app called "Help". Click "Disable". You will only have to to do this once. Only downside is that you will lose all of these little How-To dialogues, not just the one for the bubble notifications, so make sure you know how to use all your apps before you disable this (you can always turn it back on if you need it later). Note: the "How to use motions" guides are separate and will still function even with Help disabled.
Thanks for the tip. it worked for me. Running Clean Rom 5.5.1
If people are still having trouble getting this to work, just add .bak to the end, leave the.xml there.

Bootanimation
I have just resized it a little to fit. Looks great on my moto x
Flashable in recovery or just extract the boot animation zip and put it in system/media

4.3 Google edition camera.
Install as normal apk. Advantage of the camera is multiple tap to focus and also photosphere

Give you expanded notification and quick reply. Works great but must be rooted. Replace MMS.apk with this on in system/app change permissions, delete odex file and reboot

Agreed, I really dig it. I just want to remove the Verizon logo from the end of mine. Time to bust out the editors.

You don't need to bust out any photo editor, my Rogers phone boot screen has no carrier logo at the end

As much as i do like the moto camera, there's something about the stock/aosp camera that makes me keep using it over the latter.
Is this MMS inverted?

It is light themed. You can set the quick reply to be dark themed.
I thought you could change the entire apps theme but I guess I was wrong
Will the mms still allow moto connect to work?
No matter what I do, I can't load up the CM MMS app. I followed the instructions to a tee but when my phone loads, it goes back to the stock MMS app. I tried deleting it through Titanium Backup and had the same issue. I made sure to fix the permissions for the CM app to rw-r--r-- but it still keeps reverting to the stock messaging app. Anyone else having the same issue?

Did you try to just rename it MMS.apk.bak? Also there's an MMS .odex file which needs to be renamed. You need r/ w permissions as I guess you already know but I would say its not sticking possibly. Try this MMS apk, its inverted http://db.tt/lVifHTJc
The MMS apk can be themed dark or light

Should I rename the CM MMS.apk.bak or the stock MMS.apk.bak?
Also, is the inverted MMS an inverted version of stock or CM?

The stock app and odex file too, saved me many a times doing that instead of deleting it completely and either you have to restore a nandroid or look for the apk. This way if things don't work out just use any root explorer and remove the .bak and reboot
If it doesn't work, you don't have r/w

Did you root using one of Jcase's PwnMyMoto apks? If you did make sure to boot into recovery mode so you can write to the system and make it stick.
Thanks. Much prefer the Google Boot Ani. That whit background was blinding me on stock.
Hey is there a way someone can port the Dialer app from 4.3 over to Moto X? 4.3 added a t9 dial feature and I would really like it

I had actually rooted using the original MotoRoot app. I installed the PwnMyMoto apk last night and upgraded to that. Then I booted into recovery and everything worked fine. Thanks.
