Going to root, am I doing it right?

I am on stock 4.0.4 with a locked bootloader. I want to have root with the stock rom, nothing else just root.
So I am gonna use the tool provided here,

I have already installed drivers and have the tool downloaded.
Then I would like to flash the stock google 4.0.4 rom that will let me receive OTA updates. Is this the right file?

I heard there are problems flashing stock rom with CWR if the stock recovery isnt removed? Thats why I dont know if I should flash the stock image.
Is the process of flashing rom with CWR recovery the same as with stock recovery?
My phone is the i9023.

Sorry should have specified my phone in the OP.

Best way is to do it manually. You can find all of the steps required here. The only difference is that you should be flashing the latest recovery from here and the latest superuser.zip file when flashing with recovery.
Note, unlocking bootloader will cause loss of EVERYTHING on the device that you have put on there (sdcard, apps, data partition, etc).

You suppose thats better to do manually so I will have latest version of recovery and superuser?
And yes I am aware of the data loss waited sometime to finish all my games now I am ready to lose all my app data.

Do it this way. The one click is fine but using Android SDK and going through all that will help you in the long run. This way you know the process in case something goes wrong. It may be confusing at first but worth it. It will teach you a lot more than flashing a one click!
I learnt a lot from this and feel much more experienced and capable because of it. I know I will be able to solve any major issues using Android Debug Bridge (adb).

Okay then I am gonna try the manual way and gonna take out time for it. Now I just need to know what do I flash once I have unlocked bootloader and installed CWR?
I just want the stock google rom and receive OTA if nexus S continues to be supported by google.

You won't need to reinstall the ROM if you are currently on 4.0.4. The ROM stays there as-is. Feel free to do your wipes in recovery and reflash stock 4.0.4 through CWM if you must. You flash CWM to your phone and then superuser through CWM.
Steps:
Setup ADB/fastboot
Bootloader --> fastboot oem unlock --> agree
Bootloader --> fastboot flash recovery recovery.img --> this will give you CWM
Recovery --> flash superuser.zip and, if you must, wipe and reflash ICS (flash su AFTER this if done)
Reboot --> bingo
Also note, with stock ROMs it will replace your current recovery with stock recovery on each boot. If you want to keep CWM, delete /system/etc/flash-recovery.sh when you first boot. You'll have to reflash recovery afterward and it will stick.

Oh I was of the impression that unlocking bootloader wipes everything means it wipes the OS as well. That is nice if it's just data and not the OS, dont think I would reflash it if it's not needed.
Can you explain what you mean by will have to reflash recovery? I will have to do that even if I delete that file on first boot? And whats the drawback if I dont delete that file and stick with stock recovery?

As soon as you boot into stock android it will replace the recovery. So if that file is there on first boot, it will replace it while booting and you will be without CWM (stock instead). After first boot you can delete the file (you can reflash a ROM which has this deleted, or delete it yourself from a stock ROM, or even use adb or a recovery-based file manager to delete the file, then you won't have this problem at all) and it will no longer reflash stock recovery, but you would already have the stock one and need to flash CWM one more time to get it to stick. Easiest way is to just flash CWM and delete it within android imo, saves mounting commands and the such.
No downside really. If you need to flash something for one reason or another you'll just have to reflash CWM before you do so. Once rooted, ROM Manager can do this for you within android anyway.

I had already downloaded and installed the drivers from the one click root thread and my computer shows the android adb thing when I connect my phone with USB debugging.
But as you guys suggested I am gonna do the manual way. So do I just skip the installing driver on computer in the part 1 of this guide?

Because you have a Nexus S with amoled. That's the i9020. The i9023 is SLCD.

He has the i9023 to my knowledge. It is completely normal, though. Bootloader and recovery for i9020 and i9023 series are the same, this can be attributed to the issue with 4.0.3 recovery backlight not turning on.
If fastboot recognises your phone in the bootloader (the fastboot menu), your drivers are installed an working perfectly.

Finally got to the unlock bootloader screen, didnt do it just yet but now I know how to do it.
I must say the guide is a bit outdated, the software has changed quite a bit seems. The most frustrating part was that the fastboot file is actually in the platform tools folder instead of the tools folder which I didnt figure for a while. I will hold off rooting when I have a whole day off because once I lose everything I would be very anxious to get my phone back to normal which will take time.
Thanks for the help harbb, if I have any problem flashing recovery and superuser I will come back for more help.
And yes I have the LCD version i9023.

Btw the guide said the fastboot will be in the tools folder but the tools folder had a read me that "adb has moved to the platform tools folder" this is how I figured to go to that folder and thats where the fastboot file actually was.
Now it says I should put the recovery image in the tools folder so should I do that or put it in the platform tools folder?

In the instructions for the flashing recovery I am not understanding one thing.

fastboot and adb is now in platform tools, that is correct. Easiest way is to put your recovery in there too so you don't have to type in the absolute file path to it, don't put it in tools.
Don't power off or reboot the phone. After you flash recovery go straight into the recovery menu and root, flash custom ROMs, kernels, etc. You can transfer files to flash via the mounts and storage --> mount usb storage menu. After this feel free to reboot.

I just rooted my WT19i and unlocked bootloader. Because I'm absolutely new in custom ROMs I need your advice helping me to decide which of them I should install on my device. Which is the best?
BTW I already tried installing CM9 using ROM manager, but it said "Installing update..." , then the device rebooted ant stuck on "Sony Ericsson" logo... I had to flash firmware and root my phone again...

ROMs for this phone are buggy if you want one with all features working even walkman button try Hibroman (just ask for a link to download)
if you have unlocked bootloader you can see kernels like rage kernel with cpu governors this will increase/improve battery !
It's better to use phone-specific methods for flashing than ROM Manager (some got trouble by this way)
when flashing a ROM that requests to change bootloader be sure to flash it using a laptop on battery -it's better to protect from power problems if something is wrong when flashing bootloader your phone is bricked and only service tools can revive it !
never flash ROMs/ kernels not made for your phone -you are to experiment a hardware failure !

Thanks! I guess I'll try installing this ROM and kernel when I have enough time. And two more questions: if I flashed another firmware my bootloader will be locked again and which version of Hybroman should I use?

nope your bootloader is not touched by flashing a custom ROM
indeed in some cases you have to flash separately a different bootloader so you can use that custom rom (in fact the problem is that bootloader will not give a chance to that kernel to load into memory -it's about a kind of protection)

try real ics 5.1 with krsh kernel... its really nice on my wt19i

If u didn't then ur phone gets stuck at SE logo...
CM9 is ICS based so first
1. flash ICS
2. flash boot.img file (instde cm-9.0.0-coconut.zip)
3. Enter recovery (turn off ur phone and turn it on by pressing volume down key.)
4. wipe custom data and device cache
5. install cm-9.0.0-coconut.zip
6. reboot...
Ur CM9 will work

Unlocked, now can't install kexec roms?

I unlocked the bootloader. Roms like Synergy, Bean, etc no longer boot (stuck on samusg scrreeen)

What methode did you use to unlock it? I'm running the stock no nonsense rom and I belive unlocked with no problems

Do other roms boot? Will the newest CM10 nightly boot? Will anything boot?
Did you flash a different recovery? If you were using kexec roms before (beans is one, so is synergy with imo's kernel) and then flashed a non-kexec-supporting recovery, that'd explain not being able to boot. If you're unlocked, you don't have to flash a new recovery.
If you did the unlock correctly, you should be able to boot whatever you were able to before. If you can't get anything at all to boot, it's possible you flashed a bad aboot image.

CM10 ROMs boot.
I think it's because I used CWM 5.x rather than 6.x. Phone isn't recongized by PC, no idea why. Any idae how to get 6.x using the terminal app in CM10 and wifi?

Thanks. Flashing Synergy now to test it...let's see what happens.
EDIT: Flashed just great, but still isn't working. But, it's cool, CM10 mods work and I got what I needed (exported Verizon contacts and improted them to Google Contacts using My Verizon's webstie)

Yep, that's exactly the problem. You installed a non-kexec recovery and your roms still use kexec.
You're sure you selected the right options in EZ recovery? Open it, scroll to the recovery pane, select the "recovery" radio button, change the drop down menu next to it to CWM 6.0.1.0, click the "Flash!" button. That should let you install whatever roms or kernels you like.

Being unlocked shouldn't have any impact on being able to flash using ez-recovery. One thing you can try is use EZ-Recovery to flash stock recovery, odin back to the stock verizon image which should relock the bootloader and start all over.

Why do you need to flash stock recovery to use Odin to flash stock Verizon rom? Odin has nothing to do with what recovery you have installed. I flashed stock unrooted rom while rooted and having CWM recovery, it worked just fine. Once you flash stock rom, it restores the stock recovery too anyway. I'm fairly sure of this, but if I'm wrong, please correct me anybody.

Just to be safe. Wanted to get rid of the sprint related elements from the original root so I Odin'd back to stock with cwm installed using the VRALF2 tar found here. Tried to boot into recovery to factory reset prior to first boot and had 0 recovery (not stock nor cwm). Luckily the rom booted and I used the simple root method to root and install EZ-Recovery to install CWM.

If I flashed synergy v1.7 and used rom manager v5.x.x and then unlocked the boot loader how would I flash a new rom? Do I have to use ez recovery with clockwork mod v6.x.x since it is now unlocked or can I continue using rom manager with clockwork mod 5.x.x. I'm a noob and won't be looking to switch roms until synergy gets jellybean. Thanks for the help and hopefully I made sense with my question

I think my issue might be related to the issues stated above.
So after after having unlocked my bootloader with EZ unlock & installing beans custom Rom via TWRP , I decided to go back to synergy. I made a nandroid of my synergy which was origianlly installed with CWM and figured I could just wipe and restore that with TWRP. Total bootloop.
OK, so I pulled the battery, tried it again...bootloop.
SO I pulled the battery, wiped and installed the synergy zip thinking I could try a fresh install. I got a message in TWRP that E:sd-ext was not found, but wipe seemed to happen so I continued the process.
installation said it was successful but now when I try to boot up, I either get stuck in the android is upgrading applications (looping over and over) or it gets through there and tells me all teh com.android.xxxx applications unexpectedly stop.
is this a soft brick? can I recover from this? are there incompatibilities between the kernels of bean's custom rom and synergy for verizon samsung galaxy s3?

[Q] custom recovery needed?

Hello all,
I'm new to Xperia L but not to rooting. I rooted my own HTC sensation and I'm planning to do the same to the Xperia to fix a not working camera and insane battery drain. On the HTC, I needed to flash a custom recovery, update bootloader, update radio before I could install a custom ROM.
Do I need to repeat the same procedure with the XPL? Or just unlock bootloader -> flash ROM done (which is what I'm getting from going through these forums)?

Yep !! Kk roms n many jb roms r pre-rooted..if u dont need backup n stuff then no need to root..unlock bootloader..wic clears internal storage..so unlock>flash kk kernel>rom

the way I see it now is 2 options:
- first root, and make a TA backuo
or
- unlock, flash recovery (CWM from what I've gathered), flash kernel/ROM.
correct?
Can I backup the stock ROM in CWM if I choose to follow the second option?

I have a 3rd n better option , u can backup everything before unlock as it erases apps n internal sd..so fo this
1)root n thn titanium backup 2)cwm on locked (go to original development) recovery instaler tool
3)nandroid backup
4)unlock
5)flash custom rom..wicever ..just u cnt flash kk rom frm jb recovery

I know I could just unlock and flash a custom ROM/kernel, but I really want to backup with TA before unlocking (not my own phone) and for that I need full root first.

There's rooting kit in the general section that works on 4.2.2. Backing up TA partition is always a good idea. I would suggest you to take a full nandroid backup AFTER flashing a custom kernel. There's no need for titanium backup too (I don't understand why the above post mentions that). Now that you have a working recovery and backup, proceed with flashing your rom.

thanks, I managed to get it rooted, TA backup, bootloader unlock and flashed a stock FTF. I'm looking for a kernel that contains the CWM recovery so I can flash some ROMS.

use any custom kernel. use phantom v7 for jellybean, above that are all for kitkat onli. There's a stock kernel with recovery too. And it's really god

One more thing though...it seems I can't get into the recovery by default. The purple LED light doesn't lit up when I boot my phone and I tried wigling the volume buttons during boot multiple times but it just boots regularly. I was on the verge to flash a recovery with a boot.img, from phantom I believe, but I figured I wouldn't before I figure out how to get into the recovery. Supose the ROM won't boot after flashing a new recovery, there's no way for me to enter CWM

You cannot enter the recovery by keypress on stock. You'll have to do that via ADB or Gravitybox etc.

I see, so the volume button trick is a custom ROM only feature to enter the recovery..? So I gues I would have to flash a custom ROM with recovery included with flashtool. Can someone hoop me up with a ROM like that?
I did some research into this Gravitybox but it sais it requires a working custom recovery, which I lack.

Unlock bootloader, download a JB Custom Kernel (Vengeance is a good one), extract boot.img and flash it in fastboot mode with flashtool.

It's NOT the ROM. Recovery comes with custom KERNEL. If you're on stock kernel then you won't be able to enter recovery by pressing volume down.
Unlock your bootloader, flash a custom kernel and then you will have a recovery and glowing led on boot. In case your phone doesn't boot( that you cautioned) flash stock FTF using flashtool. It will reset your kernel(which means flash stock kernel, which works anyways).

ok, got it. thanks.
next problem: I got the CWM working and I was about to flash a custom ROM. the AOSP ROM from Taoshan gave me an error so I wanted to flash a different one. I dowloaded and stored a different ROM+gapps on a different SD card to save some time. Now for some reason, CWM memorizes the content of the combination of the 2 SDcards, and it won't update it's content no matter what SDcard I use. I formatted the SD card and stored the ROM+gapps again, but CWM keeps showing me the content of the old status of the SD card. So I can't select any new zips.
quesiton is, can I fix this somehow OR, can I reflash the boot.img to overwrite the current CWM without any issues? I have no working ROM atm since I already to apply a new one.

Yes, you can flash new kernel anytime. I am not sure what's causing this problem. I wonder if there's any refresh or reload option in CWM or any option to reset/clear CWM data. Look for these options and if you don't find, feel free to flash the kernel again.

I was using a JB kernel and trying to flash KK roms. Extracted a kernel from LS 4.4 ROM and flashed it, phone is booted and working fine now.
about the CWM issue, reflashing the same kernel won't solve the it. When I flashed a different kernel, it did do the trick. Seems CWM stores SD partitions in its own memory. I managed to install zips from the SDcard by accesing the external SDcard partition. Haven't seen any refresh or reload options in CWM.
thanks for the help, overall I just had to do some more reading. I'm quite familiar with rooting but I come from a HTC device, which is entirely different imo. (using 4ext recovery there which I personally find a lot more user friendly). Getting accustomed with Sony devices, the rooting and the terminoligy takes some time I guess.

Stuck on Samsung logo screen after flashing bootloader!

Hey guys,
I was previously on xtresolite 2.4 lollipop rom and saw that he had a new rom out based on Marshmellow 6.01.
The instructions for the installation the new rom said to flash the new bootloader, modem and recovery before installing the new rom.
I flashed the bootloader with Odin using the BL button as instructed and how it's stuck on the Samsung Screen. I can still boot into download mode, but that's about it. It won't let me boot into recovery. Doing a bit of research it says to boot into download warning screen and cancel. Then quickly do the recovery buttons (volup, home, power), but it still won't go in.
So now I'm stuck! i'm trying to download the new stock Marshmellow firmware to see if I can install that, but aside from that I'm not sure what else I can do.
Any suggestions? Since I'm still able to use Odin, can I try to re-install the correct bootloader or is that too late? I'm not even sure which bootloader to install now. :crying::crying::crying:

as long as you can boot into the download mode, everything's alright. try flashing the latest stock rom for your model. then a new recovery, and then the new xtrestolite rom.
if something fails. do it again.... flash the latest stock rom, and so on.

Just make sure you have the correct model software for your phone and there won't be any issues. Did you backup your imei way back when you rooted on lollipop? If you did then everything will be fine if you didn't, Restore stock ROM and root, then backup your imei, hopefully you won't have any issues with your modem

Try pressing on power + vol down untill the phone shuts down then quickly press home+power+vol up before the phone starts . you will be in recovery try a factory reset then wait for the first boot. Voila !

hey all, just wanted to update. I still couldn't get into recovery, but was able to flash the stock rom and it's working as stock right now. Been using it for the past week or so and no major issues noted. I'm a bit scared to mess around again
Now that I'm on stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 rom, do I still need to try and flash the modem and boot loader for it?
Also, now that i'm on stock do I need to unroot again to install the twrp recovery? or can I just go into odin and flash it right away?

Stock rom overrides everything so your root is long gone & you now have the latest bootloader & modem already - don't stress & no need to do anything else! If you want custom recovery simply flash with latest TWRP using Odin in download mode (in tar format using AP button). Don't root with TWRP if asked to - instead download latest recovery flash-able SuperSU (ZIP) onto your device & then flash it using TWRP. This will be the safest option for you (with root if you want).
AFAIK one always uses the "AP" button if you wanna flash <anything> with Odin - not the BL button (I've never used this). The rest are for pro's only (of which I'm not one). I'm simply a regular rom flasher & read/study/compare several guides before attempting anything I've never done before with my device. If the overall feeling is not a good one, rule of thumb is I don't proceed until I feel confident enough about what I'm attempting to do.

I flashed the xtresolite ROM without first flashing the bootloader and modem and it worked fine for me, if you back up everything with an otg cable onto a USB then flash the ROM everything should work fine but you will have to wait around 5 minutes for it to boot. If your still waiting after 10-20 minutes then you did something wrong and you can just wipe your entire phone then recover everything from your backup on your USB ????????
