So, I was digging around the junk drawer and found my sister's old T-Mobile G2X. I figured I could use GrooveIP and Google Voice to have a good WiFi only work phone. After installing the latest CM7 nightly, I noticed the battery percentage was at 100% even though I hadn't Charged it in like a year. After some reading, I found that Airplane mode freezes the battery stats and gives you outdated battery data. My problem is, with airplane mode off, the battery stats work, but the cell standby is so outrageously high (60-80%) that the battery drains too quickly. Is there any way I can turn off data and get rid of the cell standby drain without airplane mode? I've tried *#*#4636#*#* and put preferred network type to CDMA and GSM/CDMA AUTO andd fiddled around with radio on off settings, but that enabled airplane mode. I'm running the phone without a sim card, should the cell radio even work? Sorry if I'm not making sense. Thanks for your help in advance.

Wow thanks man, this is exactly what I was looking for! I don't think I'm even going to dual boot, it's exactly what i needed.

I'm running ViperXL 3.2.8 and I'm sure the rom has nothing to do with my battery draining really fast. For instance I charged my phone last night to 100% but after doing a road trip today, it literally drained down to 14% before I shut it off. My problem is I live in a rural area and when I travel through the curvy roads, my phone loses the signal. Is there a way for me to turn off something for it not to try to re-connect to a signal when I know it will not find a signal. I think airplane mode will work but I am not sure, can anyone suggest something for me. At home I can always use my wifi to get a signal but will that drain my battery?

You can try just turning mobile data off, that should conserve battery. You can even have a toggle within the quick settings so you can quickly toggle it on and off within the pull down menu
I'm in the same boat as you lol. 15 minutes out from any direction with no signal. Airplane mode works perfectly for me.

Thanks for the info. My next question is probably a dumb question but since I'm a noob I might as well try it. I know that Elemental X and Bulletproof can improve battery life, is there anything out there that can improve signal strength or does it not exist? Which of the 2 kernels would you recommend, I know Elemental X needs to have Hboot off to install.
Kernels will not improve signal. Only radio firmware can and there's no set best radio either. Its reliant on carrier, location and hardware.
You can flash different radios and check signal levels and data speeds until you find the best one.
I believe S-off is required to flash radios.

I believe you can flash radios whole s-on as long as your hboot is <1.14.

Turning off autosync won't fix his problem though, the problem is that in a low/no signal area the radio is working too hard to connect and therefore draining battery.

Well I went ahead and installed ElementalX and I see a big improvement in performance and battery life from it. It did improve the signal a bit and it does work better at my home. On the curvy roads I just turn off the data because I might as well conserve the battery than to have it trying to connect to a signal that is not there, thus draining my battery.

A radio that works well for one user won't necessarily work well for another user. It all depends on where you are among other factors. The best thing to do is flash a few radios, note their signal strength (not the bars, the actual strength displayed in settings/about phone/network) and performance, and settle with the best one.

This has been a long time problem for me every since the OG Droid days. I go to school, 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, and at the end of the day its at 30% due to the sh*tty reception at my school. I've tried multiple things such as installing JuiceDefender (currently still using), DS Battery Saver, etc...to have data turned off as well as wifi when the phone is idle. If I keep my phone idle for lets say, 2 hours its already at 70-80% whereas if I do the same at my house with full 4g coverage and turning off data when not in use/wifi, its in the 90% range. Can anyone tell me as to what I can do to achieve that I am supposed to get with these apps other than turning on airplane mode?
Note: I have betterbatterystats to check for wakelocks and there seems to be none.

I have the same problem, luckily this only happens inside particular buildings for me, but airplane mode is the only thing that will work.
Juice defender manages your data connection, this is different, it shows under better battery stats as "no data connection" only thing you can do is try different radios, maybe mb1 would work better over mf1 or vice versa.
Also if you're running an AOSP rom, switching to touchwiz might help you significantly.

I am on touchwiz because of good stability and generally better battery life but it doesn't apply to when I'm in areas with poor reception. The thing I hate about airplane mode is either I forget, and I can't receive calls or anything unless I remember to turn it back off

It is annoying, you'd make a lot of money developing an app that automatically toggled airplane mode in areas of poor signal and off in areas of good signal. I'd buy it.
Touchwiz and radio change is all you can really do.

Using GeoFencing in NFC Task Launcher, could provide a possible solution, at least when you're at school. Use it to automatically turn on Airplane Mode when you arrive and turn it off when you leave.

Go grab Tasker. You will thank me later. You can set up a task to turn on airplane mode based on location . So when you arrive at school you go in airplane mode. You could then add another event to turn off airplane mode at specific intervals like lunch time and when school ends. Or even every 2 hours to receive email and text messages. I don't think you could turn airplane mode back off based on location (when you leave school) since you would need GPS but you can set it for the time that school ends (I.e 3:00)

Tasker I agree is brilliant. I also use it for school. I didn't set it based on location though. Instead, I have it set to signal strength between 0,1 and then i give it a 2min delay and then turn on airplane mode while keeping wifi on. Then wait 30min and then disable airplane mode so it can check for signal strength. If it is still bad, keep it in airplane mode; otherwise jump back to the step where you go to airplane mode. It works miracles for my battery.

You are welcome. It does have a learning curve. There's plenty of guides to using the app. In fact you can go to their website via the app and they have a list of probably a hundred different preconfigured tasks to download and import. So what you looking for may already have been made and you can just download it from the wiki.

Why wouldn't GPS be available. He said he had a weak phone signal, which has nothing at all to do with the GPS. Also why spend $6.99 for Tasker when you can do the same thing with NFC Task Manger without the steep learning curve that comes with Tasker.

Dear All,
I passed my old infuse to me child to use on the WiFi without a sim or a service. I keep updating her phone whenever a new version of scott.hart.bti's rom comes out (Thanks Scott). The problem is the Cell Standby is consuming most of the battery even though there is no sim in the phone.
I am wondering if there is a way I can completely remove the Radio part from the latest Roms or is there a chance that a new rom can be posted with and without the cell radio?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If no sim, so no radio! Put it in airplane mode, but will change nothing if there's no sim!
Let the phone die and charge it till 100%. Normally the rom takes 2-3 days to stabilise! U can also lower clock speed to 800mhz.
But I don't know how to remove radio function and make it become media player. The problem is with the battery and rom/gapps and not the radio since there's no sim!
From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53063834&postcount=3...
Try dialing *#*#4636#*#*
Go to Phone Information, select Turn off Radio.
Can always turn back on by Airplane Mode toggle (or go back in this way). Don't know if there is a difference between this and Airplane Mode (except the lack of the Airplane icon in the status bar) but I hope this helps.
Thanks

I have the same cell standby problem. It eats up 50% of my battery. I've put my phone in airplane mode but it still dies over the course of 8 hours.
Looking to hopefully fix this cell standby battery drain. Is it possible to turn off volte on Verizon S6?
thanks
Settings then advanced calling.
Turning it off will not help. This is a known issue.
What has worked for me is turning advanced calling off, wiped cache, turned advanced calling back on.
One time I forgot to turn volte back on and I still had the drain until I turned it on.
Let me know your results. I had to get a replacement because nothing stopped the drain on my first s6

So I followed your advice for advanced calling and my phone is at 95% and cell standby shows 1%. Is this good?
Give it a day and post your battery stats with info on how long you were on wifi. Way too small of a sample size here to determine

Will do. But where can I get the WiFi stats?
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
That's just your estimate.
Ex: out of my total 24 hours I was on wifi for about 20.
I don't know if there's a way to know exactly how long you were connected to wifi unless you turn it off every time you leave where you are on wifi.
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
So I my phones at 14% are 7hrs 16mins on battery. I was on wifi probably about 75% of the time. my cell standby is at 15%. Stats in the screen show.
Is this bad?
For reference... Almost 100% WiFi today, 50% left battery power.. Mostly phone calls today, and doing some reference look ups. I don't play games on my phone.
Having cell standby at 15% on mine. Is that to high? I was doing a lot of data transfer today over wifi. Coping files to my google drive.

Most people experience it while on wifi. Some people have reported they still get the drain while not on wifi.
I never call tech support. I always walk into a corporate store. On this occasion I said I have terrible battery drain. Told them quickly it was before and after the OTA, tried a couple workarounds I found on xda. No questions asked and they ordered my replacement. Took him longer to make a minor account change (changed first name from David to Dave) than the replacement process took.

Hello.
I don't know why, but since I bird this phone I got huge problems with battery life. Since the phone was LP-powered, it was hard to get more than 2h when using normally. Now I'm on MM, and with both Stock and Custom (RomAur) roms I can't get more than 3h. But the thing is, if I go into Airplane mode, my phone gets really good in battery. But if I only turn the data off, it still drain the battery...
I've heard of something called "fast dormancy" by another thread. Is it the problem ?
What should I do ?
Thanks in advance. Daniel aka. _cab13_
what I do before is I set my network type to GSM if I am not using the phone for internet (like if I am on wifi). try to see if this helps.
I think your problem has something to do with mobile radio active bug.
No it is not. Radio active bug is related to Data. But data is not the problem. It's cell and calls connection. If I turn my data off, it still eats battery, but if I start Airplane mode, it's okay
