Ok, so I've had this phone for about a year now (I rooted it right out the box) and I've been installing new roms and kernals for about a year too. The problem is, I still don't even see a real benefit of rooting. I was a former iOS user and I jailbroke it to get free apps and themes and stuff, which I thought was pretty cool. However, I simply like android better, so I got my HTC Thunderbolt. But I feel that after rooting I have accomplished nothing. Sure I'm able to use SetCPU, but the overclock doesn't even make a huge difference, and it "wears off" within a few minutes. Also, different ROMs all feel the same to me, the only thing that may be different is the look. Gingerbread imo is just a different lockscreen, and I still haven't installed a single theme correctly. Can someone plz argue these points and tell me how to take full advantage of this rooted thunderbolt?

The biggest advantage of rooting my phone is to get rid of all that bloatware crap, block ads and get better battery life. I just got a replacement and had to be on stock for a day before I got a chance to root again. Battery life was horrible with stock. In addition, I personally dont overclock since the phone is running smooth with these roms.
Why root? For me the answer was easy "because I can". I like the fact that I can mod my phone and remove things from it I don't like. Stock is fine and if that is what floats your boat that's cool. It's the same reason you jailbroke you iphone, so it's there when you need it.
Easy response. Free wifi tethering.
For me the biggest reason was for wifi tethering. Blows my mind I would have to pay an additional $30 for tethering ... and that is only for 2GB. It's rare that I use it, but it's nice to have the option.
Other reasons were to either freeze or uninstall apps you can't normally uninstall. I've tried a few roms, but really like sense. So currently running BAMF 1.0.7
If you felt no need to root, then you tried the wrong ROMs or missed doing the useful things that come with it.

I've never heard anyone describe their root experience in such emotionally loaded terms. It's a phone, not a girlfriend. I'm not going to argue with you because I don't have a lot of feelings tied up in my phone and my emotions haven't been placated by rooting it. It's a useful tool that let's me do what I want. I like having a device where I don't run into some stupid wall when I want to do something to it. It's that simple.

How could you have had your TB for "about a year"? It came out barely 7 months ago.
That hyperbole aside, the reason I rooted my TB (which I did when I got mine back in March) was so that I could take control of my device. Since smartphones are really little computers I want full control of it. I wouldn't stand for not having administrator privileges on any of my other computers, why would I stand for it on my phone? That wouldn't fly if I bought a Dell laptop that was locked down because Dell thought that it would provide a more consistent user experience and it won't fly for me from HTC or Verizon.

Whether it's immediately obvious or not, many of these ROMs are extensively modified. BAMF, Gingeritis, and Synergy, just to name a few that are significantly divergent from stock. Some are little more than stock dressed up pretty. Basically, it boils down to what you want or like. I simply don't recommend ROMs because most of the people that do are idiots follow what they think is a cool trend.
Some people have no real need to root a device. You might be one of them. I'm not. I like playing with different ROMs, kernels, apps that require root, and scripts. It also blocks out XDA's uber-annoying video ads. Everyone has their own reasons and some do it just to be cool, it seems.
People here has obviously touch on most of the benefits of rooting. From debloating to free wifi tether to better battery life. This is all true and also why I rooted, but one of the coolest things for me is being able to flash a rom that allows you to be on a version of android or a UI maybe not available on your device yet. Take for example the TB, it is not suppose to ever get sense 3.0 and months before gingerbread was even release i was on gingerbread and running sense 3.0. Heck you can run sense 3.5 now if you want. So to me, being able to be "ahead of the curve" and run software on your phone that is not even out yet for your device is pretty bad a$$.

Quoted both of you because I wanted to reply to both of you. First loonatik. Totally agree. Those three are the most popular and I agree with I don't recommend ROMS because im simply not that picky about the major three that for the most part are about as supermodded as you can get. And many of the mods work on all three sense ROMs. So use what ya like.
As for the OP. If you are having trouble installing themes on whichever ROM you're using post on the thread that those roms come on and there will be several people who can help you get it to work right. (yea there are some douche bags on here but for the msot part people will help). The best reasons I have for rooting and keeping my phone rooted are free wifi tethering mainly and also because like another poster said. If you bought a computer and they told you you had to keep all the crapware they send with it and couldnt uninstall it and that you could only use it a certain way then you would surely get a different computer or you would figure out a way to get around it. I like my car but i don't like my stock stereo that came with it. So i changed it. Should that void the warranty on my car? no but HTC and Verizon think it should. Im not ok with that. If you aren't happy with your rooted phone then you can unroot it and use it as stock for a little while just to see the difference. If it makes no difference to you then keep it unrooted but I think you'll probably see that there is a performance difference and a difference in battery life at least.

Just curious, what app do you guys use?
Synergyrom is by far the best ROM I've put on my tbolt imo, ...tried em all for bout a week each, but I've stuck w synergy in the end....silky smooth...great kernel...great debt support...and best of all..great batt life....with the extended battery, I can go 50+ hours on one charge with moderate use....heavy use I can still get 30-35 hours no sweat... ..all phones are different though...just try em all and c what your phone prefers...
I must be stupid, because I am going to recommend BAMF soab, it's a 3.5 ROM that is relatively fast, and I love all the new features. To each their own though.

I'm gonna take you to task on that. First off, the kernel in that ROM makes the entire ROM warez. Ziggy's work is illegal as hell and a blight to the Android/Linux community. Ziggy's kernels have also proven the worst performers as compared to Imoseyon's and Dreamkernel after repeated tests on the same ROMs. Not to mention his kernels have some serious lag issues no other kernel does. Frankly, I think the stock HTC 2.11.605.3 kernel is faster and smoother.
I am going to have to agree with every single person here. Also, I will be the first to admit it. I do feel cool when I get to reROM my phone and show it off to my friends with stock Android phones. Especially when they cry about not having some of the options available to those of us who ROM. Don't get me wrong I know it does not make me cool to ROM. I just feel cool. But in all actuality, the DEV's are the true cool ones. But, sadly some of my friends don't want to "risk bricking or losing there warranties". But, to each there own. I even have a friend with an iPhone. He loves it, it does exactly what he needs it to do un jailbroken.
The one thing that has been elusive to me though, is a good battery life. I am a fan of BAMF. And am running SoaB at the moment. As a matter of fact currently I can not get Callrecorder to work properly on this ROM. Call recording has been my savings grace so many times. Especially when I had to dispute a bill with VZW them selves. And frankly getting the person on the phone to refund what is owed back to me.is a pain in the rear some times. But, it gets done and recorded. Then, when my next bill rolls around and it has not been properly taken care of, I would call back again and have them read the notes back to me from my previous dispute. And if they say that there are no notes. I let them know that I am recording them and that I have the recording to my last dispute. That changes how the whole ball game is played. So for me, call recording is a must. But everything else every one else stated holds just as true for me also. Any way, good luck in the search for that holy grail of a ROM. I have to go. My phone is dying again for the second time today. Time to link up to the grid again.

CM7. Solid as a fort and fast as hell.
Even thought I got my Stratosphere, it will be an eon (or two, if ever) that I'll see any development for it, so I kept my Thunderbolt around to fill that void.
Actully 4G phones have unlimited hotspot on Verizon, it's the 30$ plan. There isn't a cap at all, so not sure where you get the 2 gig cap on tethering.

Hello everyone.
Recently ordered a Samsung Sidekick 4G and reading on the forums
I noticed people saying that this device lags a lot, has random FCs, etc. and
that they way of getting "rid" of this was by rooting and installing
custom roms. As you might have figured by my low post count, I'm
a newbie with regards to Android phones or Android in general. So
I have a couple of questions.
I know where to look if I want to take the chance and do this
by following this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275116
(thank God and moderators for stickies!-- making life easier )
But I would like to know:
1) What are the advantages of having Sidekick custom roms (apart
from the usual root access and what not). Is the stock Rom that bad?
Does it have lots of bloat slowing the phone?
2) Has anyone tried the different Roms out there and can I have
an assessment of what they do/offer? (i.e. which one you think
is the best with regards to battery life, bundle of sw, etc for
a newb). Basically their strenghts and weaknesses as I wouldn't want
to lose something important such as network services (i.e. 3G, WiFi, etc.)
And yes, I know that I can try them for myself, but I haven't
even received the phone and I'm scared sh!+less of rooting
don't want to think about repeating the process of the link
above to keep trying different Roms... so I will rely on your
experiences.
3) Since I wont be receiving OTA updates with or without a custom
Rom (I don't have t-mobile, it's an unlocked phone...), do
custom Roms already have stuff from OTA updates??
4) If Android 2.3 update is released for the Sidekick, will it
be available as a "custom" rom? Is that how it works for people
that don't get OTA updates?
5) If I decide to stick with stock Rom, could I still "root"
the phone and play with overclocking and all that jazz?
Finally,
6) What's the meaning of life?!?!?
Hope you can help me with these questions if you can.
And if you don't want to help me... then ... I'll be sad...
for a couple of minutes! ;-)
BTW I also ordered an LG Optimus Quantum just to also try the Windows
OS and compare between both, Android and Windows experiences
(I come from Symbian... Nokia FTW!!! ;-))
Thanks!
to question 4 it will be incorporated to the customs roms no doubt
to question 2 i have used gingerclone v2, lighting rom v2 , touchmiuiwiz, and glorious i like glorious the most so far and dislike lighting v2 the most gingerclone and touchmiui is the same rom different themes
to question 5 you can still root it and overclock it
to question 1 you get d can get better battery life, less bloatware, better signal,
to question 3 on the ota we used kg2 which was an ota as a mix with kd1
that was harsh xtreme .
saying i disliked the rom the most when basically i used 3 roms? thats not being harsh
IMO any rom developed by ayoteddy is worth checking out. Also always be sure to fully read each rom thread's first post; everything you need to know should be there.
And personally I wouldn't flash any rom or attempt to root until you're comfortable using adb commands (I've soft bricked a couple of phones myself and that's no fun at all).
There's a bunch of good youtube tutorials outlining everything from rooting to flashing custom roms. Good luck with everything and welcome to the sk4g family!

It was not harsh. lol. it's his opinion.
I have used gcv2 and glorius i loved the first but the later is def. Better, u can root without a custom rom. And dont fret about flashing a rom, this is my first phone that iv flashed, rooted etc. And yes after a week or so the stock launcher started lagging. Although i only got fc's on zeam
Sent from my SGH-T839 using xda premium
Thanks for the responses so far!
And I'll definitely stick with the stock settings but if I begin to experience bugs or lags, I'll definitely look into this! Now I have to check why the heck I'm only getting EDGE!! WTF?!! lol
Thanks.
go to wireless ettings and swtich from gsm to gs/wcda mode
I FAILED!!! :-(
I think I'm going to have to resell this phone on eBay...
I just noticed WHY it wont connect in 3G... T-Mobile phones seem to be "configured" to use the 1700 band but my service provider does 3G like AT&T and I think they use 1900...
Oh well... back to my second option... the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro...
Thanks guys!

with a custom ROM battery usage decreases in some cases and it also allows for more customization of your phone. Like in some ROMs you can change your transition effects, dock settings, and menu settings. It allows you to pick how you want your phone to look. For most people that got the OTA update their phone got really bad with freezes and force closes, you'd have to reboot your phone every day. In the end if you don't like a ROM you can always switch back.
2) Has anyone tried the different Roms out there and can I have

I've tried a few and at the moment i'm using glorious overdose by ayoteddy and sduvick. This ROM is very smooth and very nice but doesn't allow for as much customization as touchMUI or GingerClone. TouchMui allows you to customize the behaviors of your phone like menu, transitions, etc. through launcherpro which comes with the ROM, BUT it wants you to buy launcherPro when you try to do certain functions. Now i'm a newby too, barely rooted and flashed my phone a few weeks ago, as well as somebody that works with me. I've also experienced alot less forceclose issues with glorious overdose.

There aren't really that many OTA updates but from what i've seen the devs here get stuff before it's actually released, such as KJ2, which we havent officially recieved yet. The one OTA update that happened actually made the phone run like crap, excuse my language.

Somebody will probably post a version of it on the forums and devs will most likely use it as soon as they get their hands on it, IF there's still deving going on for this phone at that time.

Overall, I am happy with my phone. Use it mostly for e-mail, websurfing, various apps. Don't need to play around with settings, etc. It just works.
I am interested in possibly rooting, but frankly, I don't want to spend a lot of time on tweaks, loading ROMS, etc. I just want to use my phone.
If I root without loading a new rom, what are some of the advantages?
I know that I can remove some bloatware, but unless it significantly increases battery life, then it doesn't really matter to me. Will removing bloatware do anything significant to battery life?
I am already SIM unlocked (I called AT&T, and they gave me the code to unlock).
Any other advantages?
I have rooted my wife's NOOK with CM7, and while I like it, there are issues like the Sleep of Death (SOD), occasional lag, etc., that I really don't want to deal with on my phone. I need it to work without any glitches, or constant fiddling.
My guess is I should probably stay unrooted, but wanted to see if anyone can educate me whether there are any benefits in my situation.
Thanks!

Let's start with the basics, please search before posting. The advantages of rooting and disadvantages are well documented in numerous threads. It sounds like to me your phone is what you want/need it to be so why change it? If you are explicitly telling me you don't want to spend time flashing ROMs and tweaking the Inspire then I'm telling you its in your best interest not root.
Simply put, every custom ROM on here has its issues. No ROM is perfect, certain things work while others don't and its on you to figure out what you can or cannot live with. The only way to do that is by testing ROMs which brings me back to your statement that you don't want to spend time flashing ROMs and all that stuff..if you don't want to spend time doing this, rooting is not your journey.
Battery life is subjective, overall yes, most rooters see an increase in battery life, how much is subjective. I get 28 hours on one charge while others get 6. The difference? The user and what they do with the phone. My opinion for you is that don't root, you sound content with everything the inspire is.
Devil's advocate though, your inspire could be soo much more.
if you dont know what you want root for, then you dont need to root
if you want simple, do not root. It is not an easier path to walk on. It has its bumps and glitches. Sometimes you have a bad flash or download and have to redo it, or youll forget to back up something and now your sms messages are gone. If you arent ready to dig deeper into the phone and learn and also make it do more than stay as it is, no shame in that. Hes right, if you arent SURE you need to root than you shouldnt because the gains wont be noticed. I think most of us have had an almost brick experience at some point in time, be mentally prepared lol
once i had my phone run good all night, once i got to work it just died. was a bad flash and it didnt show its ugly head till the next day so i had to wait till i got home to fix it properly. lol gave me twitches not having my phone lol

While I agree with the posts made here already that suggest rooting may not be for you, there are a couple significant advantages which you may want to consider.
Probably the first biggest advantage from my point of view is to remove the 'spyware' (Carrier IQ) present on most factory ROMs. That's HUGE for me. I have enough government intrusion into my life, I don't need any more. Another element is that - at least on my ROM (Virtuous Unity or Affinity) that they have done an excellent job of blocking ad intrusions.
There are also some applications which require root access, though most of them are system utilities (like Titanium Backup) which you wouldn't be using if you don't intend to experiment with different ROMs.
If I'm not mistaken, there's a path to go back to the OEM (factory) ROM, however you will need to be cautious with how you back up and restore the data you need. However it's something to consider if you felt like you wanted to kick the tires while still being able to go back to stock.
As with anything else in life, there are pros and cons. At this point most ROMs are fairly stable for the Inspire, so you probably won't be at a disadvantage, but if the one thing you need on the one ROM you like is the one thing that doesn't work and it's the one thing you can't live without, then don't do it. Read the documentation for each ROM and you'll know what to do.
I rooted my wife's Inspire so that I could get rid of unwanted AT&T and HTC apps and get rid of Carrier IQ.
The result has been better battery life and no prompts/notifications for updates to apps that were installed as system apps but that I have removed. I believe that the phone runs smoother without the stuff that was running in the background.
She really does not see any difference (except the battery life) in her everyday use.

Agreed here. Rooting requires learning more in depth capabilities about your phone. If you are content with the status quo, why complicate?

No change in ROM. Battery usually has better than 50% at night when she goes to bed. She unplugs at 5 AM and usually it's back on the charger around 10 PM. Before it was at about 30% most nights.
I also believe that it uses less background data.
Root that ***** n throw a couple ROMs on there to play with. Ever since I've roted my phone a while ago I can't stop playing with new ROMs as they cone out.
Forgive me if I'm wrong but I thought that thisbphone never had carrier iq

Well, I went against the good advice offered here and rooted.
I used the Ace Hack Kit, with Ubuntu, which worked perfectly as expected.
I have not installed any ROM's, as I think I will just try to remove any bloatware, etc to see if the phone battery life increases.
Any suggestions as to what to remove (I am trying a search as we speak)?
Thanks!

Generally, I'd suggest removing anything that's carrier-specific. Those apps tend to be better for them than they are for you. To do so, I'd recommend a couple utilities that will help you in your experimentation.
1) Titanium Backup. Good for removing bloatware, when you decide what it is you don't need or want.
2) ROM Manager / Clockwork. Great for downloading ROMs and managing backups from the Android interface.
Part of what might be draining your batter is Carrier IQ, but that's not something easily dug out. You'd do better to just install a ROM that's had it expertly removed. I'd suggest either Virtuous Unity or Virtuous Affinity.

Better safe than sorry, I suppose.

Sigh. All was well with my phone, and I had taken the case off to clean it. I was in the back yard with the phone, and boom, I dropped it on the patio. Landed face down and screen cracked.
I guess I'll be looking for a new phone now.
Thanks for all of your help!

Thanks!

Removing bloat is advantageous to battery life, but the best feature IMO is AdFree Android. It , which removes ALL ads, in the browser or in the apps. It makes browsing and apps faster and cleaner.

No, the best feature is the fact you get full control of the device you purchased, anything else is secondary.
Root if for no other reason than to install CWM and keep up to date nandroid backups of your oem rom. It's always nice to have a quick solution in case something bad ever happens.
Plus, a lot of cool apps require root access.

Ok guys, the title says it all. Do you plan on living with your One XL the way HTC intended it to be or do you plan on living on the wild side? Despite the non removable battery I plan on rooting as soon as we get some good roms. For me that's half the fun of android, as soon as I get bored with one rom I flash a new one! However I am a bit concerned about the non removable battery. I've ran into more than a few sticky situations while tinkering with my Atrix that the only solution was a battery pull i.e. infinite bootloops and not being able to access recovery. So what will it be for you?
I"m on a similar situation, but will Rom away.
definitely. and not having a removable battery isnt a problem, if you long hold the power button for 10 sec, the device will auto shutdown and simulate a battery pull.
i will root as soon as available so my root apps work and i can tether. i usually don't rom until roms are tried and true unless i'm testing. i'm not a fan of bugs and alphas.

Hold the power button for 10+ seconds. According to the One X manual on HTC's website that will be the equivalent of a battery pull. And several users of the International version have confirmed that this works
def unlocking and rooting asap. always do.
Definitely will root, probably going to have to flash the radio to get AWS working for WCDMA.
Probably wont root. Im going to stay fully stock and see if everything is fine. If i need more enhancements/mods i will sign my phone away to htcdev
So I'm kind of a newb at rooting (I've only rooted the htc inspire) does anyone know how to root it already or are we going to have to wait till the device comes out on AT&T?
Will definitely root it but I'm gonna hold off on the roms for a while

Rooting it to remove bloat. Might flash a rom if it's stock ICS themed.
I'll probably root/ROM mine after a few days of being stock.
I want to try out some vanilla ICS on it, but who knows maybe it will be perfect the way it is
Will be rooting as soon as possible I use to many apps that require root. May stick with sense for a while but will certainly do something about the green battery icon I really hate it.
Sent from wherever I am!
I'm not particularly interested in rooting any more these days, but I think I would prefer stock ICS again.
While Sense 4.0 is an improvement over past versions, it is still far too bloated and cluttered. Having only 9GB of available space on a 16GB device is unacceptable :\
I've never not rooted or flashed a different ROM on my device. Sometimes I will add my own hacks because devs are awesome enough to tell us their method for doing so. But my ROMs aren't good enough to publish and are just rips and customizations because I'm extremely picky.
Thankfully I've managed to Disable most of the Sense junk that I don't like and retain the good stuff. My stock ROM is running beautifully. HTC has done an amazing job of streamlining things and I'm really amazed.
I'll be able to hold out. I'd love root access for root call blocker and some other essential root-dependant changes but I'm pretty dang content right now. Such a wicked device. I've never loved a device out of the box as much as this phone.
Really hoping for AOKP for this device. I love the look of AOSP with the additional features included in AOKP...best of both worlds.
I'll definitely root ASAP, but will probably hold off on ROMs until a CM9 build pops up.
Non removable battery is a non issue. My Xoom has a non removable battery and I flash custom ROMs all the time. Power + Volume buttons.

The AOKP project is an awesome compliment to the AOSP sources that are released. They do such a fantastic job. Only very minor improvements and not too much screwing around.
Cyanogenmod trumps it by just a tiny bit though. I absolutely love what they do. They're intense. I always make small donations any time I can. They're amazing.
Im guessing the people that are here are going to root and rom... otherwise they wouldnt be here.

Bingo!
I'm always surprised when I see people posting about how they've had x amount of phones and never rooted. NEVER ROOTED!?!?!? I can understand and appreciate not unlocking the bootloader or flashing ROMs, but I don't understand why they'd be here if they aren't tinkering one way or another.
I normally don't even bother setting up my phones because I've already got everything lined up to root, unlock and probably flash a different ROM onto my device.
I wrote out a whole post but realized it was mostly rambling so I figured I would condense it, although its still pretty rambling:
It seems like our phone (Maxx HD) just missed the developer bandwagon and that roms aren't really going anywhere and never actually will. Everything seems like a quick port and I have had very little success with most of them. The only stable one I have found has been Nexesque, although its basically stock with a few tweaks and add-ons.
I have been running XenonHD for the past 2ish weeks, 3 maybe with horrible battery life and a heat problem. I was running with all of the regular performance tweeks, a very dark blue (almost black) solid background, low brightness and a black theme so I have no idea what could have caused it. I would run out of full battery by 12 or 1 half of the time with an incredibly hot phone, and the other half of the time I could make it to 6 or 7 but no later. I have reflashed and am almost positive I followed the steps correctly.
I'm not asking what the best rom is, but I'm asking if there is a rom that people are actually happy with out there (preferably 4.2) or if there are any real hopes for a tangible one to come out in the near future. It seems like we're kind of screwed as the user when compared to other phones development, and while I have nothing to offer outside of small donations I would just like to know if my predictions are accurate. Is everybody waiting for something that will never come out?

To be honest I think you need to step back and put everything in prospective.hash dh etc are working on a from scratch kernel that will fix the nagging problems the 4.2.2 roms have had. This kernel is a work in progress, but I think it will be finished to a point acceptable to most people soonish. That being said, besides the annoying gps flash from stock issue and no camcorder I'm not sure there are any major bugs with the 4.2.2 roms. There have been a lot of ports because there are a lot of good roms out there for other devices that people wanted to bring over. We were "screwed" when we bought the phone as this phone had a locked bootloader(with no apparent unlock) and there were never a ton of devs to begin on moto due to the same bootloader issue. That being said, I think a lot of devs have rallied around the hd since the unlock and things will only get better after hash gets the kernel up to speed. I agree nexesque is awesome (it's what I'm running right now in fact) but there are already a lot of choices on each of the 4 most popular forums.
Tl/dr patience lol

I really like this device atm I am using stock Rogers Fw . I have tried many of the 4.2 I prefer to hang back and let it get better the phone itself is a nice piece

I imagine that we will probably also get get an android update at some point (though very unclear what and when). Maybe this will renew developer interest in the device?
I the meantime I hope the kernel development will play out well.
Personally, even if I love personalization and community development, I actually think the stock rom (xt925 Vodafone) is quite good. Good battery life and better ui than much of the competition.
