First of all I am sorry if there is thread with same issue but I couldn't find it.
My problem is not in tinny sound or no sound at all. It is problem that during calls sound from earpiece is distorted and I can't hear clearly what are people saying to me. This distortion is present every time even on speakerphone. On headset sound is clear.
I don't know when exactly that began but it was somewhere around when I S-OFF the phone with AAHK and installed IceColdSandwich.
First I thought it was earpiece and replaced it, but the problem remains. Then I notice that when I turn on speakerphone while headset is plugged in the sound in earpiece is clear. I also tried to play music without headset and noticed that in this case also sound is clear in earpiece. (on speakerphone and when I listen to music sound is also reproduced in earpiece besides loudspeaker on the back of the phone).
So I concluded that it is problem with some mics. Then I noticed that main difference between DHD and Inspire 4G is dual mic (mic near flash) so i then tried several ROMs for Inspire and DHD, with or without inspire mod fix and also stock GB ROM. I also flashed several radios (12.39a.60.19x_26.06.06.30, 12.56.60.25x_26.10.04.03_M, 12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M) but no avail.
I think that it seems to be software issue but I don't know what radio or ROM to try.
Did anyone have this issue or knows how ti fix it?

The sound of the ear piece is very loud and distorted even when the volume is at the lowest setting. It sounds like when you put the volume too high on a crappy speaker. Rebooting the phone used to fix that problem for the last 3 months when it happened but doesnt work anymore... I run Dr. Gonzo's 6.1 rom
Any ideas? Software or hardware problem? Speakerphone and earphone is fine....
UPDATE: I looked at other forums for ear piece problems on other phones and some people reported that sucking then blowing hard directly into the earpiece can reshape the speaker and solve the problem
Well guess what... it worked now the sound is clear!
Hi,
This is my first post after months of reading and waiting for the ICS RUU. I've installed it and no issues rose for me, just a strange behaviour with the headset I've always successfully used with my DS. Now when i have a phone call the mic part of the headset is not working, the person at the other end doesnt hear me, anyone has the same problem?
Thanks!

Here no headphones mic problem...(me too with official ICS ruu update).
i have no problem on that but what my problem after official ICS RUU i had a very low in-call volume the volume before i update it to official ICS is OK, but now i cant hear any call when the environment is a bit noisy. Had check my setting of the volume is "MAX".
Ive just tried again the stock headset (found it in the phone box) and mic works...funny I'm wondering why it doesn't catch the mic with the diddy beats, It's a metal connector and it worked fine on GB...It would be nice to know if there's a mic setting flag somewhere in Android when you plug in a headset...

Even I am facing headphone issue after ICS RUU upgrade. My headphone mic doesnt respond during call's. Someone pls can suggest..
Had a problem with my hands-free 's mic also, even before the RUU to ICS.
So I take it I might harmed the thing.
Yet, the ear-buds worked just fine and I was able to listen to radio and music.
Now, there is no radio or music coming from the hands-free set *or* any other headset I use.
At first, I thought it must be the jack hole. It could be destroyed somehow. Humidity, or something else.
But I tested them with a call, and they were working just fine.
(The incoming audio, anyway...)
So, there is not a hardware problem with it, or the headphones. (I wonder if there is any problem with the hands-free set, also...)
That leads us to the assumption that there is some kind of bug (or something) in the software part of the phone.
I would be curious to find out more, since the vast majority of my phone's SD card is filled with music and pod-casts.
Update 1/19: I was able to solve this by just rolling back to the Stable Version. There must have been a problem with the latest nightlys. It's not as loud as I would want it to be, and it doesn't sound super clear, but I guess it's good enough for now.
I recently installed CM10 on my One X (at&t) and everything is fine, but I noticed the speakerphone volume is very low.
The Speakers themselves are fine. I played a few youtube clips and the volume was loud enough, it's only when using the speakerphone on voice calls or Google+ Hangouts that the speaker is a problem?
Anybody have a solution for this?

Is anyone else having this problem?
Just to update:
I noticed that during the calls, when on speakerphone, only the speaker on the back of the device is the one that is on. When playing youtube, both speakers (one of the back and the earpiece are blasting away). So it seems as the trick is to somehow enable the earpiece speaker on these phone calls.
I installed this mod (http://d-h.st/rDM). Unfortunately, it only increased the phone of non phone call apps like YouTube which was already okay.

Also, just FYI, this following link is where the main CM10 dev (whose names escapes me for the moment) is working hard to fix this for the latest nightlys.

Hi all
Picked up a Nexus 5 recently (latest model latest revisions) and love the phone but am having issues with the earpiece quality.
I have to constantly move the earpiece/headset around to hear the person and find the "sweet spot", or they fade in and out.
Also I notice a hiss at times.
Reception and earpiece quality overall just don't seem good.
I have iPhone 5, galaxy s4, and htc one and none have these issues.
I am on rogers wireless in Montreal.
Does anyone else have these issues ?
Any idea how I can resolve them ?
Some have suggested changing kernel ?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance

I have the same low earpiece volume problem.
So i use my phone a lot for voice calls and here's what I've found:
1) Prior to the android update (in stock 4.4.0) the earpiece in-call volume was ok. However the microphone was bad. Meaning other people always complained that i sound very far off and they couldn't hear me clearly. But I could still make calls without using a headset.
2) After 4.4.2 update, the microphone issue seems to be resolved. People tell me that they can hear me better. However the earpiece in-call volume is much lower than before. I can only hear people if I am in a very quiet room and even then I have to strain.
The only way to use the phone for calls is to use a headset (both wired and bluetooth work). The other day I was using my old Samsung Galaxy S3 for a phone call. The difference in clarity for phone calls is night and day. I had to actually lower the volume of the S3 because it was so loud and clear.
At this point, I am not sure whether it's my Nexus phone and a hardware defect. Could it be something that google did in the 4.4.2 update (meaning fixed the microphone, but lowered the in ear volume). Furthermore using a headset at max volume sometimes distorts the audio.
The funny thing is that with the 4.4.2 update the phone speaker is better and louder. However the earpiece for making calls is just plain lousy. I can't take calls unless I am carrying a headset with me.
Hello,
I have the problem with sound from ear speaker. It is way to loud during call, so everyone around me can hear me. Even on the lowest volume, it may be heard around the phone, even though it is quiet when phone is on the ear. It is as if speakerphone is on during call.
Is this phone made like this, or my is broken? I have tried some fixes, but no luck. This is huge bother for me, so I'm considering to return it.
Does any one else have this problem. Previously I had HTC 10, and the sound during call was perfect.
