[Q] Bricked phone, DEAD PHONE! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I tried to root my phone using ODIN. I did everything as described and left it alone while ODIN was doing it's thing. At the end the phone was supposed to reboot and then voila but when I got back to the phone the screen was black and did not restart. ODIN was showing "PASS" so I thought everything went good. I tried to restart it manually but could not do it. None of the button combinations work- power itself, power+Volume Up+Home button or any other combination. Plugged in to wall charger does not show anything on the screen, like it's not charging. I took the battery out, plugged it in to the charger and the red light that shows that is being charged came on. Tried to turn it on, nothing. Tried the button combinations again- nothing. Put the battery back in the light disappeared. Took the battery out again- the light came back on. Still nothing on the screen. The phone is in coma. Is there anything that could be done te revive my phone or I should throw it away? What are the resolutions? Free or paid does not matter. Give me something and I will decide what to do afterwords. Thanks

Was the phone fully charged when you were flashing it with Odin? It's an odd coincidence that it would die at that time.
However, I have a friend whose S3 similarly died overnight sitting on the nightstand. Same exact symptoms and he even tried a new, spare battery with no joy.

Need more info to know for sure what may be wrong with your phone. A link to the guide you followed would be good. In the meantime, you can try what the OP in this thread did:

Thank you, I'll give it a shot and let you know. That's a job hopefully for the next weekend cause I'm not home right know.

What root method did you do?

It's always a very tense moment for me whenever I use ODIN. It's not that hard to brick your phone with it so I'm always on the edge of my seat. Still, if you have everything set up properly it should never be an issue. Since ODIN actually said "pass" then I'm thinking either:
a) You flashed the file onto the wrong partition
b) You flashed a file meant for a different phone
I'm leaning toward b since I'm assuming you read directions carefully and only flashed to the PDA portion. Do you have a link to the website or forum topic from which you got the root instructions? The behavior you're describing is very similar to what happens when people flash a file meant for the International version of the S3.

Phone is stuck on a screen maybe bricked during flashing????

Ok I was flashing back to stock 2.1 useind odin when mid process my phone fell battery out usb disconnected and bam thats it. Now my phone is locked on a screen that shows a picture of a phone ! and a computer. I can get it back to download mode and odin will se the phone but gets no further then do not unplug device, my computer beeps when its plugged in but it dose not show the phone in my computer section. Any fixes or am i screwed?
PS phone is only two weeks old if need be could I take it back like this????
Hmm I think I may hove gotten past this problem. Uninstalled odin reinstalled and now it seems to be hopefully working
Here is the fix
I was in this same situation yesterday. Here is how to get it back into download mode.
•Be sure the Samsung USB drivers for the phone are installed on your computer.
•Remove and replace the battery.
•Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable. The "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture should display on the phone's screen.
•Hold the Volume Up+Volume Down+Power buttons down simultaneously. The screen should go blank, then the picture should appear again. When the screen goes blank a second time, release the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume Up+Volume Down buttons down
If that doesn't work,i had a similar problem where I could get into odin, but it would progress beyond the pit file. Take the battery, sim and memory card out of your phone. Start odin. Put the battery only back in. hold volume up and down. Plug the phone in while holding these buttons. Don't let go until you are in download mode. Now try restoring. It should work.
Thanks for the input i am back up and running!!

Bricked replacement Captivate - Orange Screen
Just to let you know. I recently received a replacement captivate thru warranty exchange. The phone was apparently a new one with JF6. So I decided to do an update to JH7 using Kies mini. A little over half way to the update procedure, the phone screen turned orange and stayed there for a long time, eventually I had to pull the plug. Of course I had to manually go to download mode and launch Kies mini emergency recovery, the damn thing again got stuck at the orange screen.
If anybody has this experience do no proceed further and throw that damn thing back at At&T's face. Do not attempt to do anything. I made a mistake of then doing an ODIN one-click back to stop and the phone got stuck half way, went to the orange screen.. and then it was over.. The phone was dead, wouldn't turn on, no recovery or download mode with any button combo. When I plugged in to the wall, no battery indicator.
save yourself the trouble and return the damn thing
still there
I am a "noob" to posting here, and a noob to the android due to being an avid iPhone user. I am having the same problem, phone -!- computer and have tried every method i can find in this forum to get passed it. Are there any other thoughts or suggestions? (got hung at do not turn off target in odin) Thanks in advance to any help.

went that route, still cant find dl mode. have resistors built and all. any way i try to boot shows me the phone -!- computer, and the computer doesnt attempt to recognise it so there is no communication between the computer and phone. unfortunately, i dont have a v/ohm meter, so i am not sure of the accuracy of the resistors i used to make my jig.
I fixed this many times with phone that had the button download mode and didn't.
Getting into download mode while softbricked like this wont show the normal download screen. IT will still show the error screen....
With download mode working still:
Simply remove the battery and replace,
Open odin
Hold down volume keys and plug it in till you see odin recognize ur phone.
Then continue to use odin.
Dosent work, repeat.
If you know ur button combo dosent work:
Just open odin.
Remove battery & replace.
Use jig (3k 100k ohms twisted)
Then when the phone turns on and your see the pc! screen plug in usb.
See if odin sees it.
Assuming your flash didn't fail on the PBL.bin or SBL.bin you should be fine.
Follow the methods suggested by other users here and you will get back up and running in no time at all.
Don't sweat the 'phone-!-pc' screen. I'm a little surprised that no one has given you the good news....that is just a version of the download screen for later hardware revisions. It looks bad, but if Odin recognizes your phone (if one of the COM fields goes active), just start your flash again.
Now if Odin does not recognize the phone when plugged in via USB, then you have some more work to do.
I had forgotten about posting here, and my problem has been resolved. So here it is... I tried everything that I could find within this forum, almost. I built my own jig with inferior radio shack components that would not activate download mode, though it would turn the phone on. I got wise, spent 8 dollars at ebay and purchased a JIG there. Instant download mode after 3 days (shipping). Reflashed with one click, updated w/ kies, made kernal changes and am now rockin my captivate. Thanks to those who assisted.

Using the 3-resistor method takes A LOT of patience, at least in my experience. Glad everything worked out.

Patience is a virtue, and my Ex's name. LOL! I can do without patience.
Jokes aside, i actually soldered the resistors to a plug that i had cut up, and made sure it was covered so my skin wouldnt come in contact. The Radio Shack here buys inferior products and sells them at reggular retail. Unfortunately my $300.00 V-Ohm meter is on the fritz, and i have not had the time or money to replace it yet, but I have intentions to check the actual resistance of the jig I made. ^^

[Q] I've bricked, I've searched, please be nice.

RESOLVED!
I have been on these forums long enough that if you violate protocol you get spanked but please resist if you can. I am out of ideas, I have the flu, I have a sick phone, I think this is the correct forum, I hope I have dotted all my I’s and crossed all my T’s. I have searched this forum and I have searched using Google.
Folks, I know there are dozens and dozens of "help me I've bricked my phone" threads. I have read and read and read but I can't seem to drill down to the exact issue I'm having. I used AIO Captivate Toolbox to attempt to install Cognitionv4.1.1.zip ROM on my newly updated to the official Froyo 2.2 Captivate. Having never seen the process before, but having been ROMing phones for several years it looked like it went ok. There was a progress bar on the phone as the file was downloaded, the phone restarted, and the screen displayed a gray battery alternating with a circular progress animation. Reading all the advice out there, and based on previous experience, I waited. And I waited some more. I went to watch a couple of TV shows and 90 minutes later it was doing the same thing. I pulled the USB, no affect; really nothing left I did a battery pull. When I returned the battery to the phone it went into a loop displaying the AT&T logo following by a black screen. Then I spent a few hours, seriously, trying to get the phone into the Download mode following what I read in the forums. I was unable to do the three button process so I cannibalized my Kindle USB to get a connector to make a jig. I had the resistors I needed to get the 301K I needed, soldered it all together and was able to get the phone in Download Mode. When I plug and unplug the phone I hear Windows make the sound it makes when it finds a USB device. I tried to use Odin to restore to factory, it said it was successful, the phone restarted, back to the gray battery and the spinning progress bar. Now when I run Odin, plug in the phone Odin doesn’t see the phone even though Windows does. Please, how can I get a working ROM on my phone?
Thanks,
Brian

Have you tried one of the One click stock odins? Try that and see what happens
It might help you to note that that battery+spinner screen is what happens when you plug in the cable with the phone completely off - it's supposed to do that. This allows you to charge the battery with the phone off. You should be able to just press power and boot.
The boot might fail, but that battery screen alone isn't an indicator of any problem, it's just what's supposed to happen when your phone is off and plugged in.
This is assuming I'm reading your post correctly, of course.
I've had trouble getting Odin to work before, but never had it claim success and then be unable to boot (I've recovered from a complete soft brick twice now, yay DIY experimenting).
I just did a workstation restart, battery pull in the phone, put it back in Download mode with the jig, executed Odin, connected the phone and Windows sees it as a Samsung Composite USB device, hit start on Odin3, Odin returns this message and here it sits:
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
Put your phone in download mode after connecting to USB and it should work

I know there are more than one version of Odin, do I need to look for a specific one? Obviously I need one for the Captivate.

When I first read this my jaw dropped. I was trying to remember if I tried powering on. Well Odin completed a moment ago and when I powered up it went back to the looping between AT&T and a black screen. If only were that simple.
when Odin fails you, you are doomed!
I'm kidding... but really... good luck
Look in the development section for an Odin 1 click, this will flash you back to stock... open Odin on your comp first...then plug in your usb and goto download mode, for me I have to take my battery out, plug in usb, hold both volume keys and insert battery while holding them...and then it goes to download mode and Odin sees it, its the only way I can get it to flash successfully, ...
As long as you can get into download mode, its not bricked... just finding the right combo can sometimes be tricky
EDIT
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I'm trying to be nice, what you need to do is figure out if odin 1 click will work. Without that it will be very hard to recover.
I (we) fixed it! The link below had the combination of files and steps to make this bad boy boot up.

Thanks to all of you for any contribution. What pointed me the right direction was drilling down and searching for specific versions of Odin rather than "unbrick" my phone. It was that search that led to this link. Several folks above mentioned Odin, thank you.
What I didn't say in my original post, because I didn't want to sound any more pathetic than I already did was, I worked on this issue from noon yesterday until 2:00AM this morning. I was back up at 5:30 and worked on it pretty much continuously until now. I really do have the flu and I feel like crap, but the good feeling that comes with not having a bricked phone has been restored. I *know* you all understand. I am crawling back in bed where I should have been all along.
Thanks again!
Brian

What the hell did i do?

Okay, so i had Infused 2.3.0 (i think that was the number, it's the latest one anyway). I followed the instructions to the T. I had no issues.
About 3 or 4 days later i woke up and my phone had 1% battery. I sent a text, and then locked the phone. I came back to plug it in, and tried to see if it had any battery. None, it was dead. No biggie. I plug it in, and i get the circle loading thing. Then the battery symbol appears (charging). Then the phone goes black and the circle loading thing appears again. Then it keeps restarting. and going back to the circle loading thing. Over... and Over... Then i tried charging it for a while to see if the battery was just really low. No dice.
I put my girlfriends battery from her infuse 4g and it had 90%. Did the same thing. Circle loading thing, restart, circle loading thing, etc. Then i tried to put it into recovery. No dice, it would just keep restarting. Sometimes the Samsung logo would appear, and then it would just restart samsung, black screen, samsung, black screen, then eventually back to the circle.
I got it in red recovery ONCE, i was able to scroll down twice, and then the phone restarted. I couldn't get it back into red recovery.
I thought i had bricked my phone somehow. So i tried to use GTGs unbrick. I loaded it up fine (i'd done it with my girlfriends phone before to restore it to stock). It took me about 15 tries to get it into download mode. It was in download mode for long enough so that the program recognized it, and it started the download to restore it, then the phone turned off.
Now the phone won't even turn on. I can't put it in download mode, i can't put it into recovery, i can't get it to do ANYTHING.
What the hell did i do? What caused the original issue?

Does your phone still have warranty?
What the hell didn't you do.
Ok well first of all it is not Infused 2.3 it is 2.2.3. Anyway that is not the point, did you have juice defender installed? I do not think it could have done anything, but maybe. What is the latest app/tweak/anything you installed? Finally, have you tried holding both volume buttons and power button when trying to turn it on? This problem you are having seems extremely odd. Try plugging it in.

2.2.3, thanks. I was too lazy to look it up. No, I didn't have juice defender. I used Lookout, that's all.
The latest thing I installed was the 2.2.3 update for Infused. I updated Pandora, and that's all.
Yes, i've done that with the volume buttons.

Yes. Won't turn on.
Well, best thing you can do now is see what ATT can do about it. The worst that can happen is they say they can not do anything, which you then can keep trying the ultimate unbrick over again. This helped someone on an earlier thread.
Same thing happened to me. Take the battery out. Make sure USB cable is unplugged. Hold down both up and down volume buttons plug in USB into ur phone and PC and put battery back in. This will put you in download mode and it will stick do u can return to stock. Good luck

What rom were you using?
They're replacing it. No questions asked. The phone wont turn on. So they said its a hardware failure
The guy was really nice. Didn't ask me if I did anything to it
He tried everything I did. Download mode. New battery. Nadda
got my replacement today. all is well. now to root

Constant boot loop - can't even get download mode

I have a rooted stock phone that stopped working for no apparent reason (no new ROM flashed, no configuration change). It starts, shows the Samsung logo, and immediately reboots. I tried to put it in download mode, when i hold the 3 keys I see the download logo showing up, but it reboots after a few seconds anyway. after a while it will start looping through the battery charge screen (which shows the battery as empty). I tried 2 different batteries with no change. Any idea how to get something working again?
That almost sounds like some sort of power issue. Have you left it sit turned off until the battery was full?
Yes, I left it overnight and it just keeps flashing the battery screen and then resets. I also have an external charger and used it to charge the battery, so it's not an issue with the battery actually being empty.
Have you been able to get the phone into download mode previously?
Have you have dealt with a boot loop and performed an Odin recovery previously? If not, remember it can take a few tries to get download mode to pop up.
If you can't get Odin to go, you might try flashing with Kies.
I am wondering if your phone met with some kind of disaster when you weren't around (trauma or liquid).

This sounds almost exactly like the problem I had with my Sidekick. In my case, it turned out to be a bad battery and a loose ribbon cable on the motherboard. I'd check those two things.
This happened to me as well, and the three-button method to get into download mode wasn't working. For some odd reason, for me to get into download mode all I have to do is hold down the power button + track pad, and it goes right into download mode... Maybe slightly different model?
Try that - power button + trackpad
Bootloops.
Not a guaranteed fix by any means but for troubleshooting purposes you may want to consider making a USB JIG. It will most definitely help you figure out just how serious the problem is and if it IS software related with a way to get it working again you will need the JIG anyway so its worth a shot. If nothing else you learn a new skill and you're the proud owner of an incredibly useful tool that you can say you made yourself. good luck!
I know this post is kind of old, but it just happened to me last week (same circumstance, a rooted phone, but stock). I ended up just pulling the battery out and pressing the power button a couple times to hopefully drian it and letting it sit for 15 minutes, and then I put the battery back in and it worked again. I now have another rom flashed on it, I hate stock.
I know this forum is ancient, but I'm working on an E-Bay phone with this exact issue. I found the following thread the most useful and informative on the problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996709
Hopefully this helps other.
what i did was hold the power volume and button between the menu n back with the left hand YES HOLD IT UNTILL THE PIT IS UPLOADED. then u can let go then slide in the vattery with the right.while checking off the flash bootloarders on the heimdall with it fixing my phone XD
I had this happen, I dissassembled the phone, and used an alcohol pad to clean the power button area, and manipulated the button a lot, let it dry, reassembled...it still bootlooped.
BELOW IS RISKY BUT WORKED FOR ME
So while the back cover was off (exposing the cicuit board but everything still connected) I inserted the battery and watched it boot loop...during this, I used a flathead screw driver to "short" the power button pins...this let it boot fully, and it has been fine since.
i smacked the phones power button a few times and it worked

[Q] Infuse bootloop

Im trying to explain everything to prevent unneeded questions
I have viewed several threads about this but absolutely none with an answer. My Samsung Infuse 4g with at&t (nonrooted) is in a bootloop. The cause of this was my every-other-day reboot. Once I turned it back on it goes to the samsung screen for about 5 secs, then goes black, then says samsung again and so on repeatedly. I pull the battery and as soon as it makes contact back with the phone it turns on by itself into the same Samsung screen over and over. When plugged into wall or computer it will show the charge screen where there is no battery life left, then it will flash and start up the charge screen again and so on just like the samsung screen. I cannot go into download mode (the buttons, at this point, do nothing. No response)
I have tried taking the battery out and plugging in usb cable to computer, then holding both volumes and putting battery in=charging loop
↑ with volume up=charging loop
↑↑ with volume down=charging loop
computer doesnt detect it, adb cant find it, cannot go into download mode, odin cant see it, heimdall cant see it, cant actually boot into anything, cant leave battery in or else phone will restart itself the entire time, and this was caused by my (already gbread) infuse 4g doing a regular reboot (aka power button, tap power off, after phone is confirmed off take battery out, battery back in, turn on)
Recommendations at this point? on a scale from 1=noob to 10=expert im a 7 on this type of thing. Ive always heard that as long as you can boot into a picture its only soft bricked but if i was right i wouldnt be here. Any and all help would be much appreciated. If you need me to post a video I would have NO problem doing that showing everything im doing.

You might have already tried this way, but I've always held down both volume buttons first before plugging in the USB cord - not the other way around. You can also try different cords, different USB ports and/or different computers.
Mine was doing this the other day and it turned out to be my SD card being flaky. Maybe try taking it out and booting?

Ive tried a hp touchpad cord, an atrix cord, and the original cord. I cant really do the button combo because as soon as the battery makes contact the phone turns on. thats why i had the usb cord in first to see if it worked. ive tried every usb port and 2 different laptops, the computer wont recognize it if the phone wont go past the samsung start up screen

Mine was doing this the other day and it turned out to be my SD card being flaky. Maybe try taking it out and booting?

I've taken the card out and used a different card, nothing. Tried taking sim card out, nothing.
I should have been clearer. Leave the battery out of the process until after attaching the cord and the screen coming up.

I do, every time.
1. battery out
2. hold down volume buttons (any combo)
3. attach cord (nothing happens, no screen, nothing)
4. put battery in
Results= Charging loop

should be the same...wonder if you battery needs to be charged first, it should be fully charged at best...to do any flash/Odin/one click
this how I do it...basicly the same..
>take batt out
>plug in usb cable...to both phone and computer
>hold both volume buttons...NO NOT HOLD THE POWER BUTTON....
>put batt in...
and bam should see the android dude shoveling in yellow triangle...
If you get no response from the usb without the battery, and inserting the battery indicates the battery needs charging - I'd suspect the phone's usb port. Especially after trying different cords & computers.

Hello.
I have the same problem... tried also everything now i gave it to cellphone shop, i hope you guys can give me answer before i am gonna waist $100
HELP?1
Help me please
I was in this state. There are two options I can think of. A JIG as mentioned previously or the Heimdall One-Click-Unbrick. The one-click unbrick did it for me and got me back to cmw and download mode, then i could flash to stock, root and flash up to ICS. It was really easy and I stopped sweating once it booted to cmw instantly after running it.

Sounds/Looks like a hardware issue...
Did it get any water damage in the past?
Hope you got warranty or still under warranty.
I am having exactly the same problem. My Infuse has never been rooted or unlocked (quite ironically, I was about to root it for the first time).
Boot loop when not plugged in, charge loop when plugged in. Absolutely no combination of buttons, inserting/removing the battery, and/or plugging/unplugging the USB has gotten it to do anything.
This has happened several times over the past few days. The first few times it sorted itself out in an hour or two. Today I couldn't get it to do anything at all.
I found several posts by people who have this problem, and it has never been conclusively solved from what I've seen. Finally one person said they fixed it by lightly smacking the phone with their hand. Lo and behold, it came on for about 5 minutes before looping again. So I smacked it again, and before it could re-loop, I factory reset it. A few hours went by and I was convinced that it was fixed.
A few minutes ago I had it plugged in to my computer via USB and was getting ready to SuperOneClick it. Then it went back into loop. I can't get it to come on this time. Again, no combination of buttons will send it into download mode. The computer can't see it. The battery is charged. The USB cable and port are fine. The software was reset earlier today. Does this mean that I have a hardware problem, or is there a software issue that could be fixable?
EDIT: So I decided to try hitting the power button, something that had never worked to this point, and the device came on. A couple minutes later it went back to boot loop. On a whim I tried download mode, which had stubbornly refused to work all day. Of course it immediately worked. Not really knowing what to try, since I'd already wiped user data, I wiped cache data and formatted the internal SD. Then I told it to reboot. Back to boot loop. A few minutes later, it came back on with the power button. Two minutes later, boot loop again. Then it restarted of its own accord. And now back to boot loop. I just don't even know anymore.
EDIT2: Just a thought... Something is weird with the power button. Whenever the phone is on and I hit power (briefly, not holding it down), it goes to the shutdown menu as though I'd held it down. A few seconds later, I'm always back in boot loop.
Infuse loop
I have found the problem. It is, in my case, the power button. I removed the case and crossed terminals with a paperclip. BAM. Booted up, and when I removed the paper clip.... back to boot loop at Samsung logo.
There is a place to send the phone. Ive see great reviews.

Seems like there has been a string of power button malfunctions going around lately. There are a few threads going on where people have had this issue. Sometimes its just the terminals needing to be cleaned or dust blown out.
