Hey guys, why is there only one (with many problems) sense rom for the nexus s? what is it that makes it so hard to port?
Having come from the HTC Dream where there is always an abundace of (insert random sense phone here) sense rom ports, it seems very odd that the Nexus S doesn't have them.
Htc sense is proprietary code. The only way to port is in smali and aosp devs don't like smali. I don't mind working with it but no plans on working with it (sense).

Another question is why isn't there any touchwiz port yet? Sgs and ns are very similar phones both made by samsung. There is a sense rom which is pretty functional, but no touchwiz? COMON!

Your Dream was made by HTC.
Sense is made by HTC.
The Nexus S is made by Samsung.

I have heard this so many times that it turned into a pathetic cliche...
Your statement has no sense btw, it would be a ROM with root acces so system apps can easily be unninstalled. I would use touchwiz for the graphic acceleration alone, in the browser.
You can even get rid of it's launcher, you can delete absolutely everything you want and you would still have the features from touchwizz, like codec support out of the box and maybe the cool camera app. But I repeat, the browser alone would be the biggest feature.
Edit: Touchwizz is not an UI, its a ROM with extra features.
generally people that would buy a nexus dont want the propriatary UIs. thats why they bought a nexus, to avoid that extra bloat.

The closest similar phone to the NS on the market is SGS. There is a port for HTC Sense which comes from a totally different phone, totally different CPU and GPU and touchwizz can't be ported? I really, really doubt it.

No once said it can't be ported, my statement was addressing the end of your previous post having the codexes and camera app. You can't because the hw is different. The camera in the sgs, is capable of 720p recording, ours is not. Just because porting touchwiz is possible I would never expect to see it I promise no dev has the interest in it. You should have went with the sgs2 a newer updated tw than on the sgs.

Guys I've be wondering...why do OEMs always skin up their UI in a way so that it becomes disgusting to use...
Many custom ROMs sure only exists just to bring the native Android feeling like on the Nexus devices to those phones, right?
I myself own a Galaxy Note, and the day I bought it I feel its system was so crapped over with all that Touchwiz bs and Samsung Apps that nobody is going to use but still runs in the background.
So, if OEMs start building 'stock' Android firmwares and only add the essential features (like S-Pen Apps), wouldn't that be awesome for its users and for the OEM, due to not having to port everyting over once a new Android version arrives, which maybe means lower costs and faster updates?
I know that it would be making phones harder to differentiate, and marketing those would be harder, but they could make two production lines or two software versions and let the users choose which they want to update to...
Maybe I am just too naive lol, but I've been searching for a phablet with as much stock UI as possible and eventually I gave up
Any answers appreciated
This already started during Gingerbread and I think even before, back then Android looked hideous and the phone manufacturers actually did a decent job back then like HTC with it's 'Sense'. I think the manufacturers are still stuck in their old habits, and trying to differentiate themselves from competitors just like before. However Android started to look beautiful from ICS and on and most of these skins now look ugly and outdated.
I think the manufacturers have to step up their game just like google did with ICS, with either improving their skins or just remove their custom skins all together.
If you want the AOSP look, buy a nexus device or flash a ROM. You will just have to trust me when I say the masses like things the way they are. Stock Android is getting pretty good, but Sony's UI I just love, and I can see a lot of things which Sony and other OEMs bring to their skin a whole version before Google does
I for myself hate Touchwiz, but if you say so
You may dislike touchwiz UI (join the club) but the fact is Samsung has a lot of closed source features not available on stock AOSP.
As mentioned before it is just brand differentiation.

While it would be nice to have the option of choosing Stock or Skin at setup, it would be difficult because their software is completely different. I personally like Stock Android and would rather not go back to any skin for that matter.
You could also just use a launcher (and de-bloat if it's an issue for you) to get a "look".
On my phone, I only use a launcher so that I can get T-Mobile's native WIFI-calling that's TW-only. I really didn't mind TW and there were some things I really liked - but the dealbreaker was lack of customisation - little changes that I wanted to make that made the phone go from good to awesome.
If you just want the look, try Apex or Nova launcher - you don't even necessarily need root.
Steve Kondik recently put up a post on Google+ in response to websites in general that were stating no CM support for the Galaxy S4. He stated that cyanogenmod definitely will support the S4, and hopefully this should put to rest all the rumors on this.

The one thing I love in Samsung phones over others is the fact that it has a buttload of software features. Now, that being said, what I love more is running AOSP on it or CM which means losing those features BUT if you've heard of dual boot....
Just seeing that post gave me a smile, I know what my next phone is
Cool...:good:
It's highly unlikely that the GT-I9500 [Exynos] variant would get stable CM if Samsung remain stingy with the codes required.

The only reason you're using cm is cause you're using an old phone that doesn't have any special features of touchwiz that came after the S3 and Note 2. I had the GS1, and I couldn't handle using stock for that. But after the S3, things have changed. Now Samsung offers much more on top of being the most stable and smoothest. There is no reason to lose features, even simple features such as MHL is gone with paranoid android. I am back on stock and can't be happier knowing things are smooth and no stupid bugs.
^^^^^^ totally disagree. May lose some Sammy features, but CM /AOSP offers the best customization and smoothness.

It's all a matter of taste. Samsung has been including lots of customizations to its Touchwiz interface for the past couple of years.
Customizations that were only included on CM before are now present on Touchwiz and I'm really glad Samsung is paying attention to what people want.
That's my understating of it anyway. I'll still flash CM ROM's when a new Android comes just to see how it is before having to wait for Samsung to update it.

Yes, I agree with you on that. Samsung does stuff in enough features that you may not need CM/AOSP. But my concern is still about after Samsung stops supporting the handset for android upgrades. I doubt I would have been able to run my i9000 on GB till now.

Why not have the best of both worlds? Use the handset with stock for the first year or so, and then when Samsung is getting slow on the updates (or stopping) start rolling with AOSP. In a similar way when I built my computer I ran my processor and GPU like normal for a few years. After that, I started overclocking to help keep pace with games and stuff. That is, unless you intend to upgrade every year in which case it won't matter as much.

Agreed. To me that's the biggest upside of AOSP ROMs, having the latest version of Android. When you've always got the latest software it's a lot easier to hold onto your hardware for a while longer. I plan to stick with stock for quite a while.

Not necessarily. From my experience, touchwiz based ROMs get better battery life, stability etc. than CM. Or at worse, it's barely noticeable, even if such differences do exist. And you miss out on awesome dev - like Perseus on AOSP (best kernel for Note 2/SGS3 IMHO).
Can't wait to overclock an overclocked CPU with some CM!
I have gained permission from geti (the maker of the international port of HTC one rom to the s4) as we all know we can run gt i9505 roms on our ATT galaxy s4s unfortunately data doesn't seem to work on our variant and it is confirmed working for the international version I would like to assemble a team of devs to fix the data issue on our device also wifi does not seem to work either most likely this is a kernel issue and as I don't have time to build all on my own id like to extend an offer to all the devs on here to help bring Data Sound and Wifi to our Devices hopefully we can have a working port soon thanks for all the help in advanced

Why are so many people so happy to have an HTC Sense ROM on their Galaxy phones. Why not just buy an HTC phone instead?
Not trying to be a troublemaker. Just kind of wondering.
Are these folks who don't like AOSP & TW but are Samsung hardware lovers, or is there something super-duper special about Sense.

For me, I love the look of sense, but I prefer samsung phones because they are the only one with removable backs, SD card slots, and believe it or not, I love the plastic feel. So yes, I am one of those people. Sense on a s3 or s4 Is awesome. Am not trying to be a trouble maker either. Just answering the question. I mean, maybe it HTC didn't put a 4 megapixel camera on the HTC one, then people wouldn't want sense on their s4.

So what about the camera then?
The code would be written for that special HTC camera and not the more "normal" Samsung camera.
to reply to all of your questions 1 AN HTC sense port gives us just another option for those of us who lack funds to stock up on the latest premium phones every 3 months for instance i was faced with the dilema of HTC 1 vs GS 4 and i picked the s4 for its megapixels and expandable memory but that does not change the fact that HTC sense is a beautiful rendering of the Android operating system the hardware in HTC one is what pushed me towards the s4 but why cant we have both via a port plus no one ever said no to having more roms lol
About this rom in regards to S4 i337 ATT variant
this rom is bootable on our i337's just flash and LOKI which is great camera works via 3d party apps also great TEXTS are received and sent and calls are also received
what isn't working is
SOUND
Data
SD Card
WIFI

Because people have personal preference, desires, likes, etc... And want to do whatever they want with their device? Why are you so happy with the music you listen to that other people may not? Lol. I'd love to see a sense ROM on Samsung devices in the future. It's a complete change in manufactured OS. More variety, more to toy with, more to switch back and forth to and from. IMO, sense 5 is pretty cool and I'd use it before TW for sure. But I'm also satisfied with TW in my Note 3. Not so much on the S4 stock as it lags. In the end it's all preference. I've seen people say that their stock S4 hasn't the tiniest bit if lag while my first, second, third and fourth S4 all lagged equally on every TW ROM.

TouchWiz is horribly bloated. I understand the idea behind giving the buyer as many features as possible, but most of them are pointless and only serve to slow down the phone. The higher-end the device, the more features, so better hardware doesn't always mean better performance. They should let the user decide what features they want to install (they can still limit cheaper devices to fewer features).
And then there's the settings menus...especially the Galaxy S5. Holy hell what a clusterfrak.
They're sluggish, but I actually like the look of TouchWiz. I use a TW based ROM called S3Rx where all the bloat is removed.
Touchwiz isn't aimed at us. It's designed for the average customer who has no experience with a phone.
Because sadly, we are about 8% of their customer base. On a positive day.
Yes, TW is a nightmare. It's ugly , restrictive and a resource hog. However, 90% of Samsung's users don't even notice it.
They're not getting rid of it any time soon. I asked. They laughed.
