I'm in the market for a new phone and I've simply had enough of the ****ty Apple experience. I'm still using an iPhone 4, though the thing gets so hot when I'm on a phone call I almost feel like Apple should replace for free.
So i'm convinced that I don't want another apple phone. I have the Nexus 7 tablet and absolutely love it. I would love to have a device running stock android (or close to it) that also makes phone calls.
The one criteria: I have to maintain Verizon as my cellular carrier for the time being.
The two phones I'm looking at are the upcoming Moto X and HTC One.
It looks like the GSM variants of the HTC One can easily be rooted to run the goodle play rom, but does that mean the CDMA will also quickly get the same treatment?
So far, everything I see from the Moto X looks pretty good though I'm a bit disappointed in some the crap-quality photos it takes.
I'm hoping there's someone out there that can help with my analysis paralysis and point me in the right direction here. Big thanks!

i thought i'd ask openly since i've done a fair amount of homework, but i'm still inexperienced when it comes with rooting these devices etc.
i used to be a symbian guy, then switched to htc only winmo phones, and joined this forum back in 04. we would flash custom roms etc etc (i really enjoyed it)
what phone do you guys recommend that's either out now or coming out soon for a US provider? i'm looking for top of the line, super fast, easily rooted, new roms flashed (no encrypted boot loaders etc)
i've been on the iphone since 07 (2g, 3g, 3gs) but the new iphone4 just doesn't impress me very much and i'm ready to finally make the move to (what i believe to be) a better device.
any opinions out there? i'm currently with at&t, but can jump ship to verizon or t-mobile (i kinda like the htc evo, but i always hear people complain about sprint here) and i read the droid x will most likely have an encrypted boot loader, so i'm not sure about verizon either.
I was in the same situation as you last week. I have no complaints about ATT's service in my area and signing a contract with another carrier didn't look too appealing since I've been out of contract since 08.
The Nexus One meets all of your criteria and then some. I do not have that gadget lust anymore, I don't feel that it is incomplete like I always felt with my other devices. Hell the only thing I really felt that was missing from the stock build is waking with the trackball, I too came from an iPhone and it just feels natural as opposed to using the sleep button.
I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the top tier Android offerings right now. They all have strengths and weaknesses but the simple fact that the Nexus One gets the (official) updates first made it an easy choice for me.
thanks for the reply. i've been looking at the nexus one for the same reasons you described... the ability to get updates quickly, and the fact it comes with a vanilla rom. i wish i could get the att version with a discount... it looks like if i go with it i'll need to get t-mobile.
i was a little hesitant just because im not sure how it holds up against the latest round of android devices (due to it being out for a while now) but it definitely looks fairly solid from what i've ready.
i ditto the nexus one..IF you want to stay with ATT..but a very customizable phone is the motorola droid..plus a physical keyboard is a BIG plus for me..but the droid is a little old and you should wait for the droid 2 next month..the thing is..who knows who long is going to take for dev to start working on droid 2...droid already has a large drawer full of kernels, themes, roms..ect
yeh, i think theres just too many phones out/coming out to make a decision. the nexus multitouch problem i keep reading about seems kind of annoying... i played with an evo on sprint today and apparently sprint has extremely slow data in my area (even tho it was full bars on 3g) and the droid x might have a locked/encrypted boot loader which i read will definitely affect the ability to flash roms (so i've read)
almost as bad as car shopping.

I have a choice between an HD2 or a Nexus one by trading someone for it. Which one should I get and why?
I'm gonna say nexus one even though the hd2 has android now by way of unnoficial means. I don't know if everything is fully working and will continue to work but windows mobile is pretty meh. Its always flustered t6he crap out of me albeit the hardware wasn't HD2 levels. But if you like windows or your one of those serious business types then HD2 for you.
I would really like the hd2 since Android is now possible on it. I just don't know how stable it is at the moment. Can anyone tell me what works on hd2 and what doesn't?
It's still a bit far from being fully compatible. Pretty much everything works but with certain conditions. For example, the Desire ROM IMO runs everything (even the camera), but it's not compatible with certain Windows Mobile Roms and even the factory ROM isn't fully compatible. The battery isn't lasting as long when running Android either. You're probably going to want to get a Class 6 Micro SD for it if you want some speed added to it too. IMO it's pretty damn close to being fully compatible and I feel glad I got the HD2 over the Nexus one after seeing how close it is to having Android ported to it. Still, don't go for it if THAT is the only reason you want it. Android will not be 100% done it. It'll still have moments where it could freeze and you have to manually reset it. For all we know, the developers could just get pissed and quit developing for it tomorrow so I suggest not depending on it being fully done.
I picked up Nexus three months ago...since I'm not that patient regarding firmware updating...Nexus being a real google phone relaly got me then, so after painfully deciding for something like, two weeks, i bought nexus...
if flashing newly cooked ROMS on a regular basis and feeling excited but whatever new things come out and eager to try them first, go nexus.

I am a HD2 owner, but if I had the chance to go back in the past, I would probably choose the Nexus One. However, I like both very much, but the "Google Experience" is much more attractive than win mobile 6.5.

Keep leaning cause its the most bad ass phone I've ever used or seen. Its guarantee'd to be a show stopper at work and make all your iphoney coworkers slink off into a corner with their iapps to make themselves feel better.

If you want to use Android, go for nexus. Yes you can have Android on HD2. I tried it on my TD2 also, but the battery life was horrible, and the phone gets really really hot, when used, and no call sounds at all.
Hopefully this will get better, but nobody can be sure if the port to android for WM devices will be fully functional in the future at all.
You will have a better android 2.2 FroYo experience on the Nexus.
They both have problems, nexus one is cursed with touch button problem (not sure in the new ones) anyway, the one I had was cursed with the problem. Hd2 i can not say, but will be receiving one soon. only problem is with the hd2 that People can't use windows Mobile and cry about " I want android" other than that its a good phone.

Touchscreen on HD2 is kinda flaky at best even after hacking, but the HUGE screen is a big plus for reading e-books.
Nexus one has Trad Chinese interface out of the box, no custom ROM required. All you have to do is to get IME.
It's all about mobile OS preference. If you prefer Android 2.2, go for nexus one, but if you're T-Mobile US customer, wait for HTC Vanguard.
I bought an HD2 through upgrading my mobile contract last week and I returned it in six days for a Nexus one (bought from a private seller). Windows Mobile home screen looks nice but that's about it. The layout of OS is extremely confusing and takes a long while to get use to. The screen is very nice but wasnt enough to keep me from returning the phone. I also installed Android on the phone but it will still be a while to fix all the bugs and there are plenty and it just never feels right in terms of stability. Go with the nexus one. It is awesome. If the HD2 initially came with official android, HD2 all they way.
Hi everyone. I just found out some information about my job and our cell phone providers. We were getting discounts when we have AT&T, but thats about to change. We will no longer get a discount on AT&T coverage, but will on T-Mobile, so Im switching. I currently have a Captivate and want to get another Android phone. Im so lost as to which one to get.
So Ive come to all of you for help. Its really between the Nexus S, G2 or MyTouch 4g. Can anyone please tell me which of these is the best? And just some extra info, the G2's physical keyboard is really a non deciding factor for me. Its nice, but not necessary.

i would say nexus s because its the newest thing and it has a ffc (like the mt4g) and it also has a better camera the mt4g and g2 cameras dont live up to the hype that comes with the phone
The only thing that jumping to T-Mobile and the nexus s was a fear of having the same GPS issues as my captivate. I used a fix to improve GPS that was posted here, but I would rather not have to deal with something like that.

Android: G2 or MyTouch.
Nexus S is pretty meh and has some start limitations (i.e. no SD Card, No HD Video Recording, etc.).
MyTouch has both these and a FFC. I would expect it to get at least a Gingerbread update.
Same for the G2. It's *almost* a stock phone and it should be trivial for HTC to support this phone going forward. Ginger is almost guaranteed for this phone, and I wouldn't even rule out the next Android version, since it will be trivial for them to get the update up and running for this device.
If you want a WP7 device there is only one choice.
Then there is the HD2. I personally don't think it's that great a device but the people who like them are quite vicious about it. Perhaps you'd really get into it. It's a good dev phone.
Nexus S has no HD video? Wow, I didnt know that. Seems like it was a given since the other Galaxy S phones do.

I too am currently looking for an android phone.
I was pretty much sure I was going to get the Thunderbolt or Evo depending on if Verizon would match Sprint's current bonus minutes offer. But now I've been reading about other phones (LG G2x, EVO 3D coming soon...) and new developments such as dual core processors, etc... and I'm thinking maybe I should wait.
Depends what your budget is. Galaxy S II seems a favorite.
I think it'd be a good idea to think of what you want and then we could make some suggestions... I'm hoping for the Droid Pro II (eventually) but that's because I like keys and don't mind the smaller screen.

Since the OP hasn't been back I won't feel bad hijacking this thread.
Looks like now I'm deciding between the Galaxy S II and the Evo 3D.
Since the GS2 is going to be open source, does that mean we will probably be able to put HTC Sense 3.0 on the GS2? I really wanted an HTC and I like their UI but I think I'd rather have the better camera than 3D.
Is there another HTC phone that will compare with the GS2? Also, I read Samsung is bad about updating, but if I'm rooting and flashing a new ROM that is moot, right? The devs will update ROMS here and I can grab those, right?
It's really more phone than I think I need but I've had mine for almost a year past my contract expiring so I'm not someone who needs to replace my phone asap, I will probably live with new phone for 3-4 years. And I don't mind waiting a few more months for price drop and devs to do their thing. So I'd like to future proof it a little bit even if it costs a bit more right now, I think.
Or I get the Thunderbolt right now but it seems like I should go to dual processors and 1gb ram for future OS updates but that is kind of guessing on my part based on what I've been reading the past few days.
I'm going to use it mostly for phone, texts, email, music and internet browsing. Then once I learn more about the android apps I'd like to integrate it with my home AV system as much as possible. I'm coming from a dumbphone that I dropped my data plan for so it's just calls and texts and casual pic taking right now. Kind of excited to get a smartphone.
Hi I'm looking to replace my current crappy HTC Snap. Its a horrible device. I want to upgrade to another Android device, preferably without 4G. None of the devices seem like an upgrade though, even though its 2009 vs 2011!
I like an active developer community, and a good keyboard. The Droid I enjoyed using since I didn't need to get a case for it and it was just a 'perfect smartphone' even today, if it had a better processor + ram, and if the battery life was better it could easily compete with today's phones.
Droid didn't have a very good keyboard, so far the closest thing is the Evo Shift, I'm fond of the Blackberry style phones too, so the XPRT is worth considering... if it had custom roms I would have gotten it already.
A good battery life would be awesome too. I would love to have a phone that just doesn't need to be charged every day, every other day would be cool or even every 2 days. I am a heavy texter so a good keyboard is almost a must, I didn't mind swype and I like it now, but still love a tactile keyboard.

You mentioned the shift, nice phone, but you need to know that is a 4g phone. I would recommend to stay away from Samsung based on my own and my roommates bad experiences with the moment and epic 4g. I would not get an EVO 4G at this time as the new bootloader is locked preventing root. Most of the newer android devices from Sprint are either 4g or just not worth it. The new EVO 3d has been rooted and would be my choice if you don't care about the extra 10 a month for 4g service. If not, try out the new windows phone 7, It's not 4g and has a keyboard. The new UI is actually sweet. However, the development community is not as big as on android.
I'd recommend going into a Sprint store and trying them all out first before making a decision.
