Tried to post this confirmation over on the developer "How to Root" thread, but evidently I haven't posted enough yet
I used the instructions here and they worked great. It was fast and easy, and most importantly for me, did not require the unlock from Motorola. With a brand new phone, I just wasn't up for voiding my warranty just to be able to use Titanium Backup and Wifi Tether!
yep, Motofail2Go! drjbliss is a master exploit writer!
Damn, I did the motorola unlock code which voids the warranty.
First time with a motorola phone and wasn't aware of existing methods
Is there any way to install CWM or another recovery using this method, without unlocking the bootloader?
Nope, Safestrap would be the way to go, but from what I know it is not compatible with the Photon Q....never tried it tough. The Droid 4 works great with Safestrap.
Hey guys, I used this thread to root without bootloader. Worked great after installing the ADB files to my PC and working in debug mode.
Question: I rooted in order to install an ap called reverse tether (PC internet connection powers phone internet). Now the app won't work cuz my phone is shutting down my tethering option everytime because I guess its not on my current Sprint plan. Any pointers or is there something I am missing? Total noob here. TIA
EDIT: Fixed Charge Only mode error... apparently there is some convoluted BS regarding debug mode that will disable the mass storage aspect during debug mode and then keep that setting even after a restart and leaving debug mode. I had to go back in debug mode, 1. Toggle USB Debugging to On (Settings > Developer Options [Under System]) 2. Power the phone off. 3. Power the phone on. 4. Toggle USB Debugging to Off..... still dont know about the VSNCP thing but looks like I can get a handle on it soon as well.
ORIGINAL: Hey guys after my post last night now I am running into some issues... First of all, when I plugged in my phone at work this morning, it refuses to connect as Mass Storage or Media Device MTP or Camera PTP. It lets me select it, but it doesnt save the setting. It automatically reverts back to charging mode whenever I leave the screen. It refuses to save the selection like the options are disabled. Note line 1 of the notifications "charge only"
Secondly, when I decided to restart the phone to fix this connection problem, I got this notification in line 2 of the screen shot, note: "VSNCP Registration Response Error VSNCP Error 8:Admin Prohibited" This message pops up each time the phone boots up. You can't click on it and it doesnt do anything. You can only dismiss it. Any idea what this is?
One thing I noticed this morning is that the Motorola drivers I installed yesterday came with a little PC ap that monitors the phone for updates or whatever, a little Moto logo in the task tray in the corner... now today its gone? I was thinking maybe there is some sort of scheme by Moto to sync the phones to a certain PC with that program so unless that program is running the phone only charges on PCs and doesnt recognize the storage device... but today that program is nowhere to be found on my PC.
Does the root of these problems come from working in debug mode and switching some settings maybe?
Can anyone help me out? I am a total noob that came from a CM 10.1 Epic which is looking pretty nice right about now.
Keep in mind I am a total noob. I did this root method, now I don't know how to unlock the bootloader. I am surprised that the information and how-tos are so hard to find for this phone after being out for 5 months!
TIA
For your VSNCP Error Check this thread over at Sprint
Here is the link I used to unlock mine. As far as I know the only way is to do it through the official motorola website.

Will this still work with 2.3.5?
If I'm not mistaken your on the wrong forum. This is for the photon q not the photon 4g.

FWIW I have bricked my device twice with this method and of course had no custom recovery to flash and magically fix everything. Quite a hassle but that is the price you pay for being CARELESS. Use at our own risk. One benefit is that I kept warranty. It is great for aps like tether, reverse tether, backup, etc. that require root. Dont know if I will do it again because trying to hack the phone back to operation is not fun. At least my back up phone is an Epic with CM 10.1 and wimax is all over my area unlike LTE.

Thats what I have.
Just to confirm, I did this on my Photon Q LTE running Android 4.04 with absolutely no issues since I did it over a month ago.
Just did it and it worked the first time with no problems on my photon q and with 2.3.5

If you want root without bootloader unlock on the latest build (ASA-15) you must use this root method BEFORE updating to asa-15. Then install something like OTA root keeper and backup root and temp unroot before installing the update. Otherwise as Vivicus notes, it will not work.

I'm on ASA-14 and I can't get rooted. Every time I run this, it says exploit failed. I did a cache/data wipe from the stock recovery and even before entering my google account info and going through the startup of the phone, I still ended up with the exploit failed. Any ideas on getting the root wihtout unlocking the bootloader in ASA-14?
Currently no way to do it without unlock. Unless you were already rooted before the update your unfortunately out of luck until someone comes up with a new exploit.

I went to make a backup and ROM Manager said there was a new version of Recovery (ended in .8). I accepted and selected the Touch version. When I then tried to make a backup, the phone rebooted and I got this massage:
System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone.
Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help
Volume up/home/power just boots to this message every time. So does Volume down/home/power. There is no way to restore a backup or use the phone in any way. I have been doing this since the days of the OG Droid, but I am lost now. Please help.
sounds like you didnt unlock your booloader
Yes it does, but it has been unlocked for a long time, and I don't think I lost the unlock with tthe 4.1.2 update. How can I unlock the bootloader without being able to start the phone?

Are you sure? Make sure you hold down Volume Down + Home for a few seconds before also hitting the Power button. I saw that same message yesterday when going back to stock and I was still able to boot into recovery/download mode. Also make sure your device is completely powered down (and not plugged in/charging)

THAT DID IT! I held volume down/home for a few seconds and then held power. The phone booted to a mode I had not seen before (recovery/download as you said?) and I said cancel and the phone booted!
I ran EZ-Unlock to unlock the boot loader. I tried several apps that require superuser permissions and they were granted it and run fine. So I assume I am still rooted, right?
Thanks so much for your help.
sounds like you should be good to go. one thing you should should consider doing is backing your IMEI if you havent already.

First, some background info is needed.
1) What did you do to your phone?
2) You have no success booting into Download mode?
3) Did you flash something in recovery? If so, what is the file name of the file you flashed?
Edit: Disregard #2, apparently I can't read. Are you using the Samsung OEM cable? Have you tried using a different USB port? Different computer?

You...have a Note 2? Why are you commenting in the Verizon GSIII forum bud? You have to try either your respective Note 2 carrier forum (i605 = Verizon Note 2 right?) or the international Note 2 forums. No one here can help you. Create a new thread in the Q/A section of the proper phone forum you need and you will receive relevant help.

That sound like a hard brick but it cant hurt to try to put it in download mode and see if odin sees it. Just keep trying until it works or you get sick of doing it.

Never mind I didn't read your post good enough. That's weird but i stand by my try statement. Never hurts to try try again especially when you cant see if you pushed the buttons at the right time or not.
If the led lights up red there is still hope. You need a class 10 SD card the exact same size as your internal memory and Google debrick.IMG for the S3. I cannot remember the link at the monument but it is possible to bring it back from the dead at this state.

I'm not even sure a debrick image will fix it. If you were on stock 4.3 and used ez-unlock you basically screwed up your bootchain by flashing an incompatible bootloader.
You flashed an insecure aboot image that won't work with the 4.3 bootchain. Using the debrick image probably won't work in this instance. You can try to send it in for a jtag, but that might not work either.
Apparently a jtag should theoretically work because there shouldn't be a qfuse on the s3. If this happened on an s4 for instance, there's probably no way to recover from this situation. If a jtag can rewrite your base commands, you should be able to get it working again. However, it's very possible that a jtag won't work either.
Anyone reading this who has 4.3, please read everything over and over again before you root the device or do anything with it.
1. Once on 4.3 you are unable to revert back to an earlier version.
2. You are unable to use custom roms because our previous bootloader unlock involved using an old aboot image to bypass the kernel check, 4.3 needs the entire boot chain to function and modifying it in any way will cause an instant hard brick.
3. Do not use ez-unlock!! The entire purpose of it is to flash the modified aboot file to allow custom roms and kernels to boot, this will cause an instant brick by breaking the 4.3 bootloader.

It was not really insurance fraud. I told them my phone won't turn on and I sent it in. They said my phone was still under warranty so they fixed it for free and they ended up changing the logic board instead of replacing the whole phone. If they were going to charge me. I would pay for it just so I could get my phone back. But I just got lucky on this one and they said it was free

I'm in the same boat. But, since the leak is only a couple of days out, I'm 99.999% sure that there is only a handful of people that would know the solution. And since they are the ones who created this update in the first place, we will have to wait until our more c rafty comrades get lucky and crack it.
My advice is to hold what you have. Tap and pay is my only motivator to update. And when you boil it down, thats just a gimmick anyhow. Having root has more weight. I updated too soon once. Now I can't unlock.
There is no way. Not voodoo or superSU. Only unlocked boots should be taking the OTA!

Also, if you do happen to get root back for the locked bootloaders, the Sqlite tethering hack doesn't work anymore as well. They fixed that exploit with the KK update.
However, as long as you have root, there is another hack to make it work. I posted another thread on how to do this at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2749659.

It's there. Go to Settings, then select "About Phone". Scroll down to "Build Number" and keep tapping on it. Eventually, it will tell you developer mode has been enabled.
This was the same under Jelly Bean.
Hi, I'm new to the forums and rooting in general. I tried to root my 5.1.1 s6 edge with Odin and unikernal using a guide online, and now its restarting over and over showing that message in red. I really appreciate any help in fixing it. Ideally, I would like to root the phone, but I need to at least get it running again.

I think so? I put it in download mode and used Odin to put on the unikernel. I think I know why now, too. I had Knox on. From what I read, this can mess it up. I tried to factory reset, but its still boot looping.

Just flash stock firmware using Odin to fix the boot issue. Which Unikernel version did you use? Use unikernel_v8-0002
What carrier? I probably have a firmware link in my dropbox you can use for a fast download.
I did use that version of unikernel. My model number is SM-G925F. I'm on straight talk, so I got an unlocked international version off amazon. If I put the stock firmware on it, could I then use unikernal to root it?
Sent from my XT1053 using Tapatalk
I would flash stock firmware then go to recovery and do a factory data reset > wipe cache partition > reboot.
Boot up then go to settings > about and tap build number 7 times > hit back once and go to developer options and enable "OEM Unlocking" (Pretty sure G925f OJC has OEM Unlocking, but could be mistaken)
Then go to download and flash kernel.
No, mine doesn't have OEM unlocking option. Could you point me to the exact file I need to run threw Odin to get the stock firmware?
