So I pulled the trigger - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Tell me how awesome this is?
I sold my iPhone 5 today and went to buy the S4 from att with early upgrade and the lady on the phone couldn't get my early upgrade thing to work so the manager had overridden it and I only paid $199!!!!
I'll have it by monday and I got it in black.
I wasn't even 10 months into my contract and they gave me a full upgrade
Now, do you guys suggest any good car chargers / cases for this bad boy?

Hope you don't have mf3 firmware... Not very fun on stock. Root is nice, but no roms.

Yeah me too. How will I tell if I have the good firmware?
Also how will I make sure it doesn't OTA

I use the same chargers I had for previous smartphones

I, like you, switched from the iphone5 to the s4. Don't use any of the USB plugs that are for the iphone5. Those are 1amp chargers and will take twice as long to charge. Make sure you use a 2.1 amp charger if not using the one that came with phone. Enjoy! I love my new phone and note 8.

Awesome guys!
Any good apps I should download when I get it? Anything recommending to help me make the switch from ios?
I usually used: shazam, facebook, instagram, twitter.
Also the mail app on this I have like 4 gmail accounts I use can I bundle them all in one like how mail on ios works? where I can put them all in and read from one folder that says "All Mail" ?

Go SMS is a pretty good app for texting. You can download all those apps on the market that you use. Yes all the mail will sync and then you'll just have to combine the folders. But check your PMs I'm going to send you something.

I switched as well and love it!
I also switched from the iPhone to the S4 and have no regrets so far (besides installing MF3...)
I have a gargantuan music library, and Google's Music app handles it all incredibly well, and if you fell for paying for Apple's iTunes Match service, Google's paid music option does a much better job.
I use almost all of the stock apps with no problem, all I can do is second the previous poster's Go SMS suggestion, it's a very nice app.
My launcher of choice is Nova, but everyone has their own preference so make sure to check them all out.
Good luck with the switch!

ok guys quick.
i just got my s4 now
my build number is 1337ucuamdl
can i root this and rom it?
if i do root it not flash it how can i make sure MF3 doesnt happen?

So let me just get this straight:
I can root and flash this device now.
If I click "software" update it will update me to MF3 which is bad!
If I went and Rooted this device now I will be able to freeze the OTAs.
Now what about when I go to flash to another rom? - Does this allow me to revert back to MDL? or if i wanted to go back to stock from lets say cyanogenmod i will have to go back to MF3?

Yes to all your questions. Root and get a custom recovery on your device, freeze the upgrade apps, and make a nandroid of where you are right now. Then you can always go back to your mdl, stock, rooted system. Then have fun flashing.

Yes: You can root and flash ROMs to your device.
Yes: You will be able to freeze the OTAs after rooting.
I think you're confused with how the update works.
Your phone is currently on the AMDL update. If you flash a ROM to it, your phones firmware will not change, and you will still be on the AMDL update. The only thing that will put you onto MF3 is the downloading the OTA.
I highly recommend you read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301762&highlight=noob
It will help explain a lot of the terms commonly used with rooting, and help make things much less confusing.
After you read all that I recommend watching some youtube videos, and once you decide that rooting is the way to go visit this thread to learn how to root and flash ROMs:

I still have my iPhone 5. I like both phones. They're both addictive to have. I kind of wander back to the iPhone because iOS is so well put together and the apps are awesome but the galaxy s4 is a great phone for sure. I like them both a lot. I say you can't go wrong with either one. Samsung did an awesome job making the s4. It's the number 1 android phone available IMO. Also Samsung makes a case called the protective cover + for s4 and its an awesome case. They make it in different colors. Look for it on their website. I have it on my s4.

I just got the Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-mobile
as a free upgrade - I didn't even know what an APP was much less
an Android os. In any event it came with froyo and I ugraded to
Gingerbread 2.3.6 -
I was wondering why I was not getting anywhere with T-Mobil and Samsung
support = now I know I had to find out from my Bank y there mobile app would
not work = phone needs current android OS. Will Android 4.1 work on /B]my phone and where do I get it?
Apparently Samsung is not coming forth as they have Galaxy S 3 coming out
PLEASE DO NOT DELETE -
No... It wont. If the app doesn't work with your phone most likely it's just not supported on your device.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
That's very strange that an app wouldn't work for 2.3.6 and only ICS, but no, you can not get Ice Cream Sandwich on your device, as it is not out for the device. If it were to be supported on your device though, it would upgrade in the same manner that you went from Froyo to Gingerbread. I hope this helps.
Thanks guys for the feedback
What bank app is it? All ones I know of work with 2.2 and above so maybe you've been misinformed?

Unfortunately, Samsung (and many other manuf) is pretty bad about releasing Android updates for its devices. If you want a newer version, you will have to root it. If you are ready to learn and get frustrated at times then visit this link about your device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G
I recommend becoming very intimate with the steps and reading up on if your device can be un-bricked before starting.
just looked at link and read part of it will finish tomorrow thanks
for the link
Everyone has been a noob some day so for you to star i would recomend you to visit freeyourandroid.com and start watching their wiki and some simple things...after that go to your phone dev section and learn a little bit of it....then root it with the easiest way out there(there are always like 3 ways)...after a week with root try to install a ROM or a kernel or a modem...something easy!! and for your samsung device always see if the part your going to flash is for your device so you dont get a $400 bucks toy
here are my ¢2 cents of help remember to always thank every guy who gives you an answer and welcome

Since this app has become reason enough to research, have you considered trading out the device for a newer model with T-mobile? May have to shell out some cash, but there are benefits to trading up if you're so inclined.
I had a quick look on Virtual Wallet by PNC from the Market and based from the reviews, it looks like you're not the only one having issue with that app. There's a developer webpage so maybe have a quick look if they are planning to update the app or email them.
Also as linearstream have mentioned, have a good read on that wiki to understand more about your phone. I did the same thing when I started rooting/modding my phone about a month ago. Believe me it's all worth it
I will do thank you

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to smartphones. Just got myself an Xperia Play 800i.
You won't be able to run ICS stock, but you may want to check Cyanogenmod and see if your device is under the supported list and see if they are developing and ICS rom for your phone. You may want to get someone a little more technologically advanced to see if they can flash your phone to ICS. I would not recommend doing it yourself as it may result in bricking your phone, or just a lot of frustration and getting no where.

[Q] Locked Bootloader = No CyanogenMod??

Hello - I am writing to try and understand - is this boot loader locked like that of Note 3 - which on AT&T has not been able to get anything like CyanogenMOD or is this phone's bootloader issue only a time issue as the phone is a recent release?? I am trying to see if the device is worth keeping? Thanks.

It is very much worth keeping. We have root and now an unlocked bootloader is on the way. Navigate up to the AT&T G3 General forum section and reference the Bootloader Unlock Bounty thread...devs are closing in on a fix now for all G3 variants.
You can donate to the cause to financially if you are able to there as well.

you know, lg's rom is pretty nice all in all, with the stuff we can change using root you can achieve almost anything you'd want... I don't miss cyan or slim roms and I'm a big fan of both. even if we unlock the bootloader I think I'll stick with stock rom, I've already got everything customized the way I want it, would be nice to have a recovery though for backups

Agreed. Root, debloat. The rom is pretty solid, especially with a custom launcher. I get better battery life out of it on any phone i've ever used even with google now on all the time (i used to uninstall it on other phones). I dunno, if the right rom comes along i might give it a shot, but otherwise.. it's a great phone as is (minus the att crap)
That's one thing I couldn't believe. The amount of bloat was incredible. A shortcut to ATT Homepage that is compiled like an app? I mean seriously? I'm surprised LG didn't smack the person who brought them the list of bloat apps to add..

Completely agree. I love what they did with the stock Rom. Has a little vanilla feel with the app drawer button and they have subtle touches like the vanilla alarm clock icon. Like it. LG went all out with this device and they nailed save for a few things that can be fixed via software update. The annoying aux cable bug and we definitely need a new radio update. For the most part I get great reception through my day but there are times I drop signal completely and have the searching for network symbol above the signal bars. Changing the network from 9 to 12 didn't help in my case. Ever since I've had greenify hibernate every app I use every day after the set amount of time my battery lasts days on moderate use. I didn't charge it last night and used it at work and watched some YouTube clips and I'm still at 52% battery. This device is amazing. The only thing I miss is being able to make reliable nandroids and having custom kernels.

LG doesn't control, nor do they add the apps. You can thank ATT for that 100%
What you can thank LG for is the ability to disable every single one of the bloat apps without root, a lot of times manufactures' roms give the carrier the ability to block the 'disable' option on their apps, requiring root to remove them.

LG marketed that the G3's software had a diet, and said the bloat could be uninstalled out of the box. This isn't really true and it certainly doesn't apply to the ATT G3.

this is absolutely true, compare their rom to say a Touchwiz rom which is Heavily modified. The LG rom is damn near stock with some minor changes. As for the bloat, you can disable it out of the box. All of it. This is huge, I've never had a phone that lets you disable all the carrier crap without root, there's always a few programs you can't get rid of, not the case with this phone.

Thoughts on rooting this bad boy

I just got a note 5 on sprint and I love it, but I'm really not sure if I want to root. Every device since I got my Samsung moment has been rooted (htc evo 4g lte, s3,s5 for the day I had it, and then the g3). Anyways, my question is losing Samsung pay worth rooting? I mean I love all the things I can do with root, I just wanna know what everyone's opinion is, so I can weigh pros and cons of rooting.

You need to use ODIN to flash TWRP and then flash a custom kernel, or just flash TWRP with ODIN and then flash a custom ROM. They are already rooted.

How often does anyone go out without your keys and wallet and drivers license. I mean really, I used it a bunch when I went jogging, but it's not 100%. The first time it didn't work I luckily had my wallet and my regular card swiped just fine. I rooted my phone the second I got home that day.
It's totally up to the user to root if need be. I, however, chose not to root this phone only because everything I needed root for I can accomplish without it whilst keeping Samsung Pay and Android Pay intact. I use the latter more than the previous so root is a no go for me based on that. However, I've tried Samsung Pay a few times and it worked with no issues. You just have to ask yourself what exactly do I need root for? These were my needs for root and the fixes I found to accomplish what I needed without rooting:
Camera Shutter Sound fix( Enforced Stream Silencer app)
Hotspot Mod( APN Settings mod. Need MSL # for this which can be gotten through Sprint Chat)
Ad Remover( AdGuard Premium App)
APK Backups/Restore( App Backup and Restore app)
System UI Backup( Smart Switch on PC)
Bloatware Removal/System App Disabler( Package Disabler Pro)
Add any app to MW( MW- Pen App Enabler Pro)
Themes( Samsung Theme Store)
These can all be achieved without root. More importantly, everything works as it should and when you need it to work without getting the dreaded FC and doing trial and error to fix it. If the Pros outweigh the Cons then do it. If not, don't root.
I honestly don't miss it. I have more time to spend with my family and not trying to find what a developer took out to make a feature of the phone work. I get updates on time without waiting for a rooted rom to be posted. I'm not trolling XDA or any other blog seeing when the next update is to whatever rom I'm using to see if hopefully the issues I had with the rom were addressed with the new build. Do I miss root? Sometimes. But ultimately I'm glad I didn't root. This was my choice. As I said, everyone is different. You have to do what works for you. I love that I have full functionality of my phone and confidence knowing if I try a feature it will work as advertised.
I stayed stock for exactly 4 weeks and used samsung pay a few times a day with 5 different credit cards. I've been rooted for the past 3 months and i do NOT miss samsung pay at all. I reap the benefits of root all day everyday because of the amazing ROM dev @tdunham and the amazing KERNEL dev @UpInTheAir.

Thanks for your insight, is there a bloatware List that you referenced?

No. I usually just remove the stuff I know about like Nascar, Ebay, etc. The system apps I disable are usually like the Calculator, Picasa maybe and a couple other things.
still waiting for my promos to go through, once they do, im gonna root it

root access to S8 or S8+

does any know if s8 or s8+ can be rooted?
are there plans to do this or does samsung now block this?
some tools titanium backup et.al. need root access
Yeah I also want to root it. Plz anyone tell the method.
Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk
Won't be a method until it's released, then I'm certain the devs here will start cracking on it. Give time, the guys here are pretty good at what they do but there's still no guarantee root will be achieved (US models that is).

Root will happen
(If not I'll be suprised)
Look at s7 edge (exynos) if you want to have the approximate method.
Once twrp is released, I bet around the beginning of Mai, you will be able to install it using Odin (breaks knox, s pay, etc)
From there you'll be able to flash whatever you want (magisk, SuperSU, etc)
Edit:
Although I just stumbled over this:
Quote:
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11149/...-8895-soc-10nm
yeah, saw on their website that encryption layers are going to be a lot stronger. I still think it'll be cracked. It's a large enough phone. just might take longer than normal.
Even root on Verizon's locked bootloader?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yea root not enough for me, also need unlocked bootloader
geez the phones not even out yet. Gotta give the devs time to get there hands on the phone, then time to actually find a way to root it.
Would it be wise to right off the bat unenable automatic downloads of "Security Update: Improves Performance and Battery" in case someone finds a way to Root and they slip in an irreversible Firmware Update?
I bought this phone knowing it's going to be at least a year before at minimum root being achieved
if at all ,so I'm not getting my hopes up at all
This phone might be the straw the breaks the developers backs
I only needed a rooted phone for ARU unchained anyway ,but since the area51 got it to work unrooted
I can afford to wait

i mean yea, kinda, but your not gonna get updates. Personally I am just gonna update my phone, and hopefully they find a way to root. My biggest concern is using samsung pay with my Gear S3, while having my phone rooted. idk if that will be possible so until then im just gonna wait.

What do you mean? Even my Note 4 after ages waiting for the newest Android (Lollipop and Marshmallow) and nothing else for some suspicious reason recently they have been pushing updates pretty regular with the exact same description I posted, "improves performance and enhances battery life" or some $h!t which from experience these updates definitely do NOT do anything of the sort so it makes you wonder…

I use Samsung pay with my gear S3 and it's linked to my rooted 6p.

I hear you, preference I guess, I just like being up to date. I find that sometimes you are unable to use certain features without the updates.
I have the note 4 myself, and the only update that was a problem with that phone was MM, you could not downgrade from it. I have the AT&T variant so, no root access, and the current temp root that they have listed on the forums is not viable because your only temp rooted on experimental testing firmware.
The main feature you'll be missing out on is Bixby most likely, idk how good it will be or how bad, but you'll be behind that, apparently Bixby is not finished yet, and will not be shipped with the phone, at least not the complete version.

Haha, Buzby (as I call it) is the one INTRUSION I do NOT want!! Never asked for it, just forced upon us. This would be great, but I suspect the Phone already has Bixby embedded into it, what with all the hype (publicity for it) about it not functioning at launch I believe is a marketing ploy to bring attention to it. The part that is not being made available at launch is their end, nothing to do with needing an update for it to work (for those who blindly want it).
See, you watch, they will make such a big deal, like a major announcement when it is made to function and they "switch on their Bixby servers" it'll be posted all over the web like when the Note 7 fiasco (supposedly) happened.
Stop for second. And think. THINK. For yourself. That right there is invaluable advice. Bixby is not your friend.

I use it also from my S7 Edge. Works just fine. I have the BT version of the Gear S3 tho. Pay dont work with international(the one on amazon) version of the S3.

Roms

Where are all the custom roms at? I only see 2 in the rom thread. Are the S7 & S7edge roms compatible?
Thanks..

There are no custom roms for the S7 USA variants. It's not possible with a locked bootloader. We only have a few modified stock roms. I'm currently rooted and waiting for Xposed so I can finally have some decent performance and battery life.

No there was a kernel source leak, so devs made a modified eng bootloader that allows root.

Thanks for the info. Im just trying to decide if I should keep my LG V20 or switch to the S7. Is the lag & battery as bad as many are complaining?

Only with root, stock is fine. If you do want the S7 with roms and kernels just get international because I feel the us is not worth it.

I'm on an unlocked G930T on AT&T on Nougat and really have not found a reason strong enough to go through the rooting process. The only thing that pushes my buttons is that I can't use TB and can't kill some of the old TMO apps completely. But the phone is speedy, gets me through the day without a charge, and has resources available. I've got a theme I like and have most things white on dark which I like better.
So until root becomes extremely easy and reliable, I'm okay with what I've got.
Hi I'm also on an unlocked version of TMobile using ATT. Are you doing anything specific for better battery life? I went to sleep at 100% and woke up with 87%. I have disable those that can be, I'm on Nougat as well and haven't installed too many apps yet.

Not really, just disabled everything I'm not using. And I use the device maintenance to optimize and clear memory every now and then. And I try not to leave the screen on, etc. The usual stuff. I get a day with no issues. I bought some extra wireless fast chargers on eBay and use them if necessary but really feel like I wasted my money because I just set it on the charger at night and it normally goes all day. But I'm not a real heavy phone user. That's part of it.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Buy Package Disabler Pro and disable all of the bloatware that comes with stock plus any other apps you feel like, my phone is flawless...
The only thing I miss about being rooted is Viper4Android, wish I could have that on stock.

I have no idea how, but it totally does.. It color coordinates system apps, user added apps and even known bloatware apps, making it easy to decide what to stop.
It's designed specifically for Samsung phones, and is the first app I install since I don't have root anymore.
Worth every penny.
Well from TMo you can get s7 edge for $480 or the flat s7 for $560? On the edge, they have fixed the palm rejection at lease on the coral blue.

Well that's weird. I bought it, tried to install it, and it says I'm rooted or there's some other issue and won't install. Obviously I'm not rooted so I don't know what's up.
After reading some of the later reviews there are many others with the same issue. I'm emailing them to see if there is any resolution.
You might want to try your app to see if it's still working correctly.

Totally jinxed me..
I haven't opened the app in months because, why? It just works..
As soon as I open it to check, the license check failed and all my frozen apps reappeared.
Now I can't get it to reactivate, it seems many people are having this problem since the upgrade to Nougat.
SUCKS... Why did I help you hahahahaha.. really though, it sucks. Hopefully they fix it, I'll leave Samsung if not.
I did find this in another thread.. Try it out.
There's a link on the 4th post, it works and I'll use that until the current version of Package Disabler Pro is fixed or updated.

I emailed them the evening I tried to install it and they sent a couple of suggestions. None of them worked so I let them know. They sent another email a couple of hours later and said "try it again" and this time is did work. So they fixed something.
Anyway, thanks. And sorry for jinxing you! But it's not all bad news. I ran your Thanks count up to double digits!
FWIW, I'm a long-time user of BK Package Disabler Pro. For me, it continued working both during the Nougat beta period and since installation of the final version.

Strange. I wonder why it quit working for so many people. They need to fix it for everybody though because their rating on play store is going down quickly.
