[Q] Capacitive buttons sporadically not working, requires reboot - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Skyrocket i727 running CM-10.1-20130807 nightly. Apex launcher. On Rogers with UCMC1 radio.
It's running stable with the (big) exception that occasionally (once or twice a day) the four buttons at the bottom (settings/home/back/search) will not respond to any touch. The only way to fix it is to restart the phone. I searched the forums and cannot find an answer to why this might be happening, nor to anyone else having this problem. I have the backlight on these buttons disabled (to save power).
Also, this might be related or maybe not, but on Monday I had a very strange crash. The HOME button wouldn't work, but the BACK button and SETTINGS button did. The notification bar wasn't functioning and no push notifications were coming through. The quick-settings panel was reverted to default, and the buttons within the quick settings panel were completely unresponsive.
Even stranger, Chrome was unresponsive, Maps/Navigation were constantly force-closing, and in general the phone was throwing a massive fit over almost anything I did. I pulled the battery but that didn't help. I was forced to go into recovery mode and perform factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, and reinstall the ROM. This has worked (although a PITA) but the issue I mentioned first (bottom buttons not working) has manifested itself since then.
Any ideas what to do here?
Much appreciated!
Eric

Run the recent nightly. Could be an issue with your rom, although I haven't seen your problem.

I just flashed the most recent nightly a few minutes ago.
Should I go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik? (note: When I flashed the ROM through CM Updater / TWRP, it 'optimized' 119 apps... so I think it automatically wiped the cache...?)

You should be ok. I never go back and wipe caches

The original issue is still occurring even on newest nightly. Completely random (using different apps each time - Facebook, Messenger, Youtube, etc...).
Any idea if a setting I can change is causing this?

Display / menus freezing and / or disappearing, system apps force closing

I've been searching this form for an hour or two now and still haven't found my issue, so here goes.
Just got an HTC Inspire 4G off of ebay and it arrived today.
The seller had mentioned that the phone was freezing / rebooting, but I figured.. that's because he's not running cm7, right?
Charged and booted up the phone and it turns out that the problem was a little worse than I first expected. I only experienced occasional freezing, and it only rebooted once, but there is a worse problem.
The phone loaded up fine, looked good, but tapping around on the home screen I got messages alerting me that system apps (htc sense, launcher, and even com.android.phone) had stopped responding or had shut down.
I hit the menu and go to settings. I scroll down the list and the entire list goes black. I hit home and it goes to a home screen, but with no launcher or icons. Basically, every few taps, the interface goes out. If you are on a menu it blacks out, if you are at home or press home after the menu blacks out you will get anywhere from pieces of icons / widgets to just a blank desktop. The live wallpaper even keeps going, but all of the interactive stuff quits. The disappearing menus didn't usually give app closed messages, they just went black. The home screen only gave app closed messages sometimes.
I thought this was a software problem, so I managed to root the phone and flash cm7. Everything booted good, but it still had the same problem of weird disappearing menus and home interfaces. I went ahead and flashed gapps and got the little intro thing about setting up my Inspire 4g that starts when you first boot your phone. I clicked through that but when it gets to connect wifi, the phone entirely freezes and I have to pull the battery.
I flashed inspiremod and nothing changed, tho that's for something else, so I'm not sure that's entirely relevant, but I was trying everything I could think of.
I'm definitely no expert on hardware, but it almost sounds like a ram problem, like it doesn't have enough to keep all of the interface going all the time and shuts it down or shuts parts of it down to work.. but I don't want to believe that. I'm really hoping that it's a software problem.
I got the phone at a good price and it came with an otterbox, so I won't be too disappointed if I can't get it fully functional, but it would still be a bummer.
Any help / advice / suggestions appreciated. Thanks, guys!
EDIT: I cleared the cache / dalvik cache before flashing / reflashing cm7, which I did once or twice
EDIT 2: Now if I leave it on the intro screen where it freezes it reboots after a minute or so. Gonna try flashing a different mod.. see if that helps.
That was a long post. But it was good, you gave a lot of info.
The cm7 zip that you downloaded, check the md5 checksum, make sureit matches whatever is in the op (first page) or wherever the md5 is, maybe where you downloaded it from. If it doesn't, download again.
Then,
from recovery,
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe dalvik
Format all partitions(except sd card)
Flash zip/rom.
Check if it works. If not, try using it without the sd card. If not, come back and report.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
I check the md5, and it's good. I just did a factory reset and wiped cache and dalvik.. I'm unsure what you mean by format all partitions except sd card. I don't think I know how to do this with clockworkmod.
Started up without sd card and it still has the same problem. Looks great until I touch the screen, then everything disappears except the wallpaper.
Reboot in recovery and do it from there. You'll find format all partitions at the bottom... well, maybe. Cwm has an option to reboot in recovery, and I think if you press and hold the power button, select reboot and it will also ask you if you wantto boot into recovery. Cant remember if cm7 has it, it should.
After you wiped those, flash the rom. Stay in recovery and search for fix.permissions. Reboot.

Just did that and re-flashed cm7, but the phone was still having the same problems.
I then repeated the process with a MIUI ICS rom and it seemingly worked for a little bit. I got a "Maps has stopped working" message, but I was able to slide back and forth through the home screens, and the menu came up. After I tapped though the menu a bit it started being weird again, but with MIUI the weirdness is different. It looked like the screen was divided up into 20 something smaller screens tiled across the display with messed up looking bits of screen in them.. weird..
If you are wiping correctly then I am out of ideas. I would say try a GB rom, however that is a strange issue and just might be a hardware problem. Tough, Im not sure.

I've tried cm7, which is 2.3, and I've tried a 4.0.4 MIUI build and one other sense rom that didn't work well at all.
I'm wiping and flashing the same as I did on my LG p509, which works beautifully with cm7.
If it is hardware, hopefully it's something simple like the battery, and not bad RAM or anything serious..
Maybe if I keep at it I'll get it.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
Np. Keep us updated.

I ordered a new battery for it, and that fixed the random reboots, which had been occurring more frequently, but the other problems were still there.
I flashed and re flashed and formatted and reinstalled a bunch, but still no luck. I then decided that I might take it by the local cell phone repair shop and see if they could fix it.
In preparation, I used aahk to flash the stock ruu with everything how it was when I got it. After booting it up, it seemed to be working ok.
I still get the occasional menu glitch, but it's so infrequent it's not an issue.
The phone still freezes up quite a bit when I'm using it, but it's nearly a useable device now!

Have you tried changing out the sd card? Having a bad sd card can cause all inds of odd issues
I booted it without an sd card before and couldn't tell the difference, but it had a lot more issues than just freezing then.
I haven't tried it since those other issues have stopped. I'll try that when I get home from work.

[SOLVED] Home button not working on any AOSP roms

Hey everyone, I'm having a weird issue with my GS3 SCH-I535. On any AOSP rom I try (CM10 Unofficial and Official, AOKP) my physical home button doesnt do anything except wake the screen when it's off. It wont return to my launcher. This doesn't happen on touchwiz roms (Synergy, stock).
Any ideas?
Isn't there an option to change hardware key functions? I'm not on CM10 yet. I will be tonight.

I saw an option for changing the long press function and tried that, but even long pressing still doesnt work. the button is completely unreactive except for waking the screen
odd.. I tried flashing another kernel but it didnt support CM10 and wouldnt boot, so i reflashed CM10 without full wipe this time and everything works fine now.
my notification bar was also completely empty and that's fixed as well. maybe it just wasnt flashing correctly before?
either way problem solved

seems like i'm having the same problem. home button only wakes on screen off, also returns to home from notifications and recent apps ... but that's it.
Worked fine on a CM10 nightly 20121004 then flashed the 20121006 and it broke. Reflashed 20121004, and still broke.(just flashed the latest nightly, and still not luck) Tried what seems like all combinations of CM10/Nova Launcher/Trebuchet settings. Tried fixing permissions, wiping cache as well.
It randomly started working again last night, but again stopped working on a reboot.
I feel like this is possibly related; at the same time my Menu (long press) only works when I'm on the Homescreen
I have no legitimate answer to your issue, but on the galaxy players there is a variation in the us/international versions that require a home button/soft key patch built specifically into the kernel. Whether that can point someone to a solution, I don't know...

In case anyone stumbles on this thread;
I seemingly found out how to replicate this on a consistent basis. On reboot, home button will not work (except for above mentioned features)
Using the "Toggle Lock Screen" Notification Drawer Widget once or twice seems to restore complete functionality until next reboot.
I have no idea how/why, but it does seem to work for me.

[Q] Notification icons gone after crash

I've got a Samsung Infuse 4G, originally Rogers now on Telus. It's been running ParanoidAndroid 2.53 from scott.hart.bti (build pa_infuse4g-userdebug 4.1.2 JO54K eng.scott.20121104.152548 test-keys) nearly flawlessly for a few weeks. I've installed a few apps (facebook, twitter, wikipedia, imdb, accuweather, etc.) but none recently.
Today, I answered a phone call from my brother, and when I took the phone away from my ear to hang up, it stayed black. I heard the disconnect sound, then it pretty much froze. I powered off to the Power Reset / Debug Mode screen, then rebooted. When it came back on, I'd lost a bunch of my settings, but not all. I currently have been unable to get back my full menu when I long-press the power button - it only has power off and reboot, no airplane mode, no volume, no profile choice (yes, I have configured these options in the settings). Further, my notifications work (ie, sound and vibrate), but the notification icon does not appear.
Anyone have any ideas what I should try? I could reflash and start over, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.
Thanks in advance.
Can anyone comment on whether or not this make be a problem with Trebuchet? Are the problems I mentioned the domain of the launcher, or is it something else? If these things are controlled by the launcher, am I able to reinstall / reset it to possibly fix the problem?
It sounds more like a SystemUI problem than a launcher problem. You can reflash the ROM without losing any data or settings by formatting just the cache partition and /system and also clearing dalvik cache. That will reinstall the ROM without data loss but if the problem persists I recommend a full and complete wipe and reflash.
If you believe it to be a trebucket problem though then download a free launcher replacement like Holo launcher from the store and see if that fixes your problems.

[Q] Updating cyanogenmod 10 to 10.1

I just wanted to be sure that I am going to do this right.
Do I just go Settings > About phone > CyanogenMod updates > then download 10.1 and it will do all the work for me? Or do I have to make a nandroid backup (going to do that anyways), wipe cache and dalvik, flash boot.img then flash the rom?
Also, how stable is 10.1? Any known bugs?

The automatic updater will not work. At least if you're S-On. So flashing through recovery is the way to do it (wipes and boot.img flashing as usual also ofc). I believe flashing CM10.1 over CM10 might work without factory reset, but prepare for stuff not working and flashing it again with proper wiping.
Bugwise I'd say CM10.1 is absolutely ready as a daily driver. Wifi tether doesn't work when screen is off (same issue is with CM10). Performance is a bit lower than with CM10. You'll see some screen tearing when scrolling and switching home screens and in some games with intense graphics.
Give it a go! It's not too hard to go back to CM10 if it doesn't please you.

This will be a tl;dr story so only read it if you can be bothered...
I did the automatic update, then as soon as it downloaded I had to run for the bus (one a bloomin' hour). I was then stuck on the htc splash screen for about ten minutes, did a soft reset, went into recovery, went back to CM10, restored the backup, not a problem. Then got home, pushed 10.1 onto the phone, flashed the new boot.img, then flashed CM10.1 and restored backup again. Worked fine. Then I had to try three different Gapps because two of them didn't actually work, and it was agonising that the website that I got them from only had an upload speed of around 0.4Mbs. But flashed that now, and everything works fine (although I had to delete and re-download NatWest and Play Music).

Spotted a couple of bugs immediately. Syncing with facebook simply does not work (I only wanted contact pictures for caller IDs). Obviously the clock bug, but I know how that is fixed. Haven't had any screen tearing yet, and since Orange only give me 750MB there is nooooooooo way that I am going to use tethering, so that won't bug me. CM10.1 has fixed the music player bug, where the first song I play would take around 30 seconds to play, if I chose another song then it would restart the previous song, play that for five seconds, then play the selected song, and if I paused a song it would then start playing again for a couple of seconds after five seconds of being paused. That was irritating. Noticed it seems to be a fair bit more RAM heavy than CM10, but I miss the settings button on the top of the notification bar, that tiles thing just seems to take to long for my liking...

Already knew about the sections thing, but because I'm right-handed every time I wanted to look at a notification I got settings, and setting it so that the settings open on the left side just seems a bit weird. I didn't know about the two fingers thing, and I like that, cheers.

Apps crashing in landscape often. Hardware problem?

Hi, I recently have been having problems with apps crashing only in landscape mode. I was on CM10.1. I now am on 10.1.3. Often times it is an emulator, YouTube, or my browser (leaning more toward a GPU problem?) I've flashed the latest firmware, wiped cache, fixed permissions, and all the usual checks like that. My last attempt was doing a completely clean wipe and it still didn't solve the problem. Usually my screen will flash black once, and then it will freeze. None of my buttons will be responsive at all. If I sit and wait, it usually doesn't fix itself and I have to battery pull. If I rotate it to portrait, after 30s or so the app will say its not responding. I can then select wait, and everything is fine. Normally if I rotate it back again, it will happen very soon again after. If I restart, it seems to last long again until it will do it. Is this a hardware issue? What can I do about this?
