Hi all,
I'm curious to see what the popular opinion is one the following topics:
1) Is it acceptable/ok to dirty flash from a ROM to itself to gain additional features? Ex: I'm currently running Hyperdrive RLS15 and I'd like to reinstall with all of my prior options, but adding an AOSP/other app. Is this ok?
2) What is the best practice in flashing a new kernel? I'm working to maximize my battery life (thus far, Hyperdrive is working decently), and I need to flash a custom kernel. Should I be doing a "so fresh and so clean" 3X wipe (system/data/dalvik/cache) and somehow include the kernel into the Aroma installer (and as a complete newb, how do I go about doing this?)? Can I flash the kernel through TWRP over top of my current install? If I'm running a complete re-install, is there any reliable method to keep all of the Hyperdrive tweaks that I've implemented?
Thanks in advance folks!

1. Yes, but you have to select everything else the exact same to keep from losing features.
2. Wiping system will erase a current rom and isn't good for installing kernels. You really don't have to wipe anything, but I like to wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, then flash the kernel.

Thanks for the response! Now I guess my questions are more toward which kernel to use. Anyone have experiences that they'd be willing to share with custom kernels?

Just try them. Pick aosp or tw. That's the only way to know what's "good" for you.
The kt747 thread has almost 180k views. Check it out and the others too.

Is there any need to do a full wipe before you install another rom? I had to do that with my inspire. I know that there's only like 4 roms available at the moment, just want to be sure..

Usually the only time you don't have to wipe is when installing a minor update to a ROM.
Better safe than sorry - if in doubt, wipe.
Edit: When switching kernels, no need to wipe, except for one known issue: If you are using a voltage control app, disable all voltage control features before switching. There are two incompatible methods for setting voltages, and if you migrate between the two, you'll basically get a system that insta-hangs. (Example: migrating from Infusion-GB to my Daily Driver when voltage control settings are enabled is a Bad Idea.)
Ok i installed aokp ics rom but I noticed the battery goes by real fast. So i thought maybe I should install a new kernel; problem is I do not know how to install a new kernel and I do not know if it is compatible with the aokp ics and wether or not it can mess everything up? so can anybody help me with this? Would Harsh Kernel P999 Build-0604 for ics rom work with the aokp ics rom and how would i be able to install it? Please help!!
Hi, I've bee using the harsh kernels with aokp since they have been available and think it is a great combination.
To install a kernel boot into clockworkmod recovery, clear cache, go into advanced and clear dalvik cache, then I usually fix permissions also in advanced(i dont know if this is necessary but i do it for piece of mind). Then go back and reboot system. That's it

Hi all,
First let me start by telling you what device I am using a Samsung Galaxy S III I535 running Liquid Smooth 2.37 rom.
I have been flashing phones for years and have bricked, unbricked & in most cases had success with dirty flashing and doing clean flashes. I have gotten to the point in my adventures with flashing phones to experiment with kernels, since that's all anyone talks about that gets some legit performance and battery life stats. So my questions are as follows ( and i apologize now if this has been asked a bazillion times before. If that is in fact the case, some direction to the link would be much appreciated, thanks! )
1) what are the steps one would have to take to properly flash a Kernel
2) are there any pitfalls and caveats i should be concerned about ( bricking is the obvious one here )
Thank you again in advance for taking the time to help me out. Just trying to get fully educated before i decide to start messing around further with my phones!

1) Make sure the kernel is compatible with your rom, Do some reading about the kernel -pros & cons.
2) Flash away. In theory, you don't even need to wipe cache or dalvik cache, but just wipe them to make you feel like...it's clean!!
3) The worst thing is you get a bootloop which is an easy fix.
One other thing to note, is AOSP kernels are not compatible with TouchWiz roms, and TW kernels are not compatible with AOSP roms.
Make sure you get the right one, if the developer offers both options.

Just adding onto this, one good way of ensuring #1 is to flash a compatible AOSP 4.3 or 4.4 kernel that is dated at or about the same time as your rom. If the more recent kernel doesn't work, try the release prior to that.

Much appreciated guys! I decided to go with [4.3/4.4][AOSP] ¤ BMS ¤ d2vzw / d2usc 3.4.y (link below). So far so good, flashed easily and no problems at this point. Ill report back and see how the performance gains are.

I noticed as soon as I loaded the Kernel there was an issue. It wouldn't connect to any wifi networks. As a matter of fact, I couldn't even turn on wifi, the switch just stayed grayed out after i initially hit it. So currently I am running KT until I can find a solution to my issue. I would love to run BMS given the great response but I need to be able to use wifi lol

Hi everyone, I'm still on 10.2 (I know...) and i want to get kitkat. However, these amazing devs we have are so active that I am a bit lost. One of the toads was supposed to be prepared to be flashed over a CM10.2 install but now there are several toads and others. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to all devs!!!
I don't think that I'd be alone when I strongly urge you to NOT dirty flash any upgrade that involves a number (let alone a letter, as in Jellybean to Kitkat) change in the operating system such as 4.3 to 4.4
Of course, you can do anything you want, but you really want to have a reasonable chance of success in having a fully functional device. I'm not a dev, but I don't believe that any of them would encourage a dirty flash of a Kitkat ROM atop a Jellybean ROM.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks reaper, i agree in principle. But i remember that one of the toads was designed specifically so that you could do this - i have a lot of customizations, screen app setup, etc., that would be a real pain to lose with a fresh install. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!

*sigh* My suggestion would be to use the pro version of a launcher like Apex that allows backup and restore of desktop and settings. Backup Apex desktop and settings, TiBu all your apps, clean flash, restore with TiBu, restore Apex desktop and settings. Being mindful that even this restore might not work due to changes in partitions and file structure with a "letter" (J to K) OS upgrade.
But if you insist on dirty flashing, then the following post from the FatToad thread by a dev implies that a dirty flash from 10.2 to 11 is possible using FatToad.

So I've downloaded all the stuff and made my mind to root the device.
Just some final questions..
1) I would be installing Xposed Framework on the device, will it hinder any OTA updates to the stock ROM?
2) If I install a custom ROM like CM, and then let's say Android 4.4.3 comes out... What should I do to update to the Android 4.4.3?
3) What is the need of getting Gapps when flashing a custom ROM? Aren't Gapps already present in Android?
4) Any other drawback of installing a Custom ROM?
Don't forget to search. Every thing you need to know is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47369234

Okay searching XDA is the best way to find out these answers, but I'll help you
1.) Using Xposed framework will stop you from receiving otas
2.) If you're running a custom ROM when 4.4.3 drops, all you will need to do is flash any 4.4.3 ROM that drops to update. Believe me, when it drops it won't be long before some 4.4.3 custom ROMs surface.
3.) Most custom ROMs do not include gapps. You'll need to flash those separately. Read the ops of each ROM you're interested in to find out if they're included.
4.) You have a Nexus, they're made to be rooted. Lol

If you're using a custom ROM though like CM, 4.4.3 doesn't really matter. Since it's a custom ROM it won't be releasing an update at the same time as google. It would be whenever CM releases their update that's based on 4.4.3. Anyone should feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. I'm fairly new to everything as well.
I have not unlocked my bootloader.. And have many things on my device [Been Using It For Over A Month]
I have many apps, contacts, app save files [games], etc.
Will I need to re-download all the apps again? Is there any way i could preserve this data? What all can I preserve.
Also, any Custom ROM suggestion. I liked Paranoid Android, but it releases a new beta like every week... This means that I'll have to flash it again? Leading to data loss every time?

Use helium to backup. We will not suggest you a rom.

Hi,
No need to flash obviously all the new update if you don't want unless there is an important bug fixed or a new feature you want. You can dirty flash (wipe only Dalvik cache and cache partition) so you won't loose your data.

Because it turns into something like "best" rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/best-rom-kernel-threads-t2477889... And you will have 20 different suggestions depending of each users needs, it will not help you more.
You need to test by yourself, read the OP of the rom threads to see the features, issue, videos, etc... read the last pages of the rom thread for feedbacks.
So.. I just want customizations to make android fun.. Paranoid would be fine?
