Upgrading a stock AT&T Skyrocket to 4.1.2 problems - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I bought a used AT&T Skyrocket it came with 4.0.4 and I tried to do the OTA upgrade to 4.1.2 the upgrade said it was successful but when I rebooted it was still on 4.0.4.
Then I downloaded the official 4.1.2 from here and flashed it with Odin following all the directions I have used Odin several times with other phones so I am no stranger to it.
It upgraded fine then after I got it all set up I decided I had better charge the phone I plugged it in and it started charging then a pop up came up and said "Battery Disconnected" I tried another brand new battery I had thinking the battery was bad but the same thing happened.
I tried everything cleaning the battery terminals and the USB port nothing helped then I used Odin to flash it back to the official 4.0.4 and it started charging fine and still is, I tried to flash it again to 4.1.2 and the same thing it won't charge and flashed back to 4.0.4 and it is charging again.
I have searched high and low for someone else with this problem and can't find anything.
Anyone have any ideas?

I tried all that with the same result.
The seller who claims to have 200 of these says there is no official JB upgrade and I must have modified the phone to even get it to upgrade so I think he knows something he is not telling.

That seller is either an idiot, a liar or both. There have been 4.1.2 updates for the i727 and i727R for months now.

Yes I am using the one that came with the phone it is Samsung branded but hard to tell if it was the original charger.
I bought it from a 3rd party seller on Amazon it was sold as "Used Like New"

While on the official JB when I plug it in the computer sees the phone and I can mount the storage on it but it wont charge through the computer either.
I have tried several different chargers while on JB and all with the same result the only way to get it to charge is downgrade to 4.0.4.

I am having the exact same problem. I just got mine off ebay last week and it also had ICS on it and charged with no problem (several times). Since I'm new to the Skyrocket I did my research on here (great threads by Vincom by the way) to make sure I do the correct steps for any type flashing and upgrading. Steps are similar to my old X10, just different sofware. Used ODIN, flashed stock, uploaded all aps, root, recovery, etc. Charged it that night with no issues. Next day went to charge it again when the battery read "!" and after 8 seconds received "battery disconnected". Unplugged, tried again, same thing. This went on for an hour until finally it recognized. Next day, same problem. Tried reflashing stock, did it twice in a row, and the sequence started again after the initial charge. Tried different roms instead of only stock, same issue. Been looking at all threads about this and after trying each possible scenario, same issue. Is there a bug in the USB Debugging? For the experienced DEVs is there a flashable fix that can be made? If there is one and I missed it in my research can someone point me in the right direction? Or am I stuck with an external charger from here on? Thank you in advance for any help on this.

no one responded if they are using oem charger and cable or replaced/tried a different charger/cable that is still oem.
if it works on stock ics it should work on stock jb, the only thing I could think of it not working on jb is the charger/cable are not compatible with the phone and that the jb firmware has changes to it compared to ics that wont allow it to charge properly

Thanks for the reply. When I got mine off eBay it said it came with a Samsung charger but not the original. So I found one that said OEM new for the Skyrocket. That's the one I've been using. Since I'm planning on building a rom from stock for my own use do you think there is a file from ICS that can be ported to JB to make it compatible with non OEM chargers? That is in case I got hosed on my supposed OEM that I bought.

Great minds think alike. Tried that too. The only consistant result is that it's not consistant. There's got to be something in the build that some devices just don't recognize coming to JB. I'm just not experienced enough to know where to look for this error to try and fix it.

I don't believe I did a wipe when upgrading from ICS to JB with ODIN. I assumed it did that on it's own and wouldn't need to. Ok, that gives me a place to start again. Maybe this can work for each of us with this problem. I'll wipe the sucker clean and downgrade to ICS with ODIN tonight. Test with my plethera of chargers I have at home see if they all work. Wipe it again and upgrade back to JB and test. Report back with results by tomorrow. Thanks for the idea Vincom.

Well crap. I was hoping I had good news for this topic but unfortunately I don't.
So I wiped everything yesterday when I got home. I was using CWM as my recovery instead of TWRP to wipe and format everything. I've used both recoveries before, just so happened to be on CWM at this time. Went down to ICS using ODIN and everything worked fine. Tried every USB charger I own and each worked flawlessly. So I wiped again, upgraded to JB and tested. Again, everything worked fine even every charger. After some playing with it I decided to go ahead and put TWRP back on through ODIN and immediately after the reboot the dreaded "Battery Disconnected" popped up. So back to the full wipe, re-flashed JB through ODIN and all was peaceful again.
So after the fresh install I downloaded all my apps back to it, frequently plugging and unplugging just to see what happens with no errors. Ran the battery down and charged completely over night. Got to work this morning, plugged it in just for $#!+$ and giggles, and sure enough "Battery Disconnected"!
Now I'm to the point of laughter about this. Thought maybe it's when I flash the custom recovery that is doing this. *loudannoyingbuzzersound* wrong!
So of course can't test again until I get home but I have a question for you Vincom and everyone else. Is there a way to flash a custom recovery without using ODIN first? Is there a way to root without the custom recovery installed? What version of ODIN is everyone using? Since I have also a computer running Ubuntu, does anyone have experience with Heimdall? If so, can anyone send me a link with a friendly tutorial on how to use it? I have it downloaded but haven't been able to get it to work and all the links I find are either not friendly or are showing how to use on windows and not Ubuntu. That's why I've been using ODIN on my wife's computer instead that runs Windows.
Sorry asb2164, I'm trying buddy.

[Q] (Q) Downgrade frm CM 9 back to gingerbread and bricked [Resolved, please delete]

I tried going back to gingerbread using Heimdall 1 click and it gives me a kernel error and failed. Now phone won't boot past the rogers logo. Any suggestions? No samsung screen. No green battery indicator when plugged in. Heimdall does detect the phone, and I've tried all USB ports and cords at my disposal. I use a mac so no access to odin. This is the first brick I haven't been able to get myself out of. Any help you would be appreciated
I am a gt i9000 owner, but can you get into download mode?
Sent by Santa Clause
If you can get download mode, then flash a gingerbread stock rom, even if it means you will lose root still do it, then flash a new rom of your choice, if you can get into download mode then you haven't got a brick

Been bricked more than once...you have?
Embarking on a fresh new ROM without educating oneself can be very frustrating....since your on a Mac..with in the one click you say it reading your phone...can you get to download mode?
Pull battery
Plug in USB to phone
Hold both volume button
Pop battery back in
Do you see...the yellow Android digging?

I can get into download mode.heimdall detects my phone. I tried both qksters and adam outlers 1 click. neither would take. If I upgrade heimdall version (as it tells me its out of date) it wont get through the initial connection to the phone. if I use with out upgrade it continues to fail on kernel download.
This is my second brick (first one was when trying to root it on my mac) First brick was fixed through odin at my work. Unfortunately I don't want to wait till monday to have a functioning phone

Hummmm..ok
Let's step back here does out prompt you for drivers?
....you might have to make a stop at your office..
Try different USB ports, I used heimdall yesterday to go back to gingerbread (so I could get the boot loaders) and I had the same problem as you, I finally got it to work with a different USB port and even then it kept failing...but I just kept trying and eventually it went through
(Pull battery, place battery back in, hold volume up and down, plug USB in-should put you in download mode...even if you can't see anything on your screen you can still enter download mode)

Alright, here it is:
I encountered the same problems yesterday, heimdall doesn't work when flashing back to stock from ics, from what I've found, you must use gtg's ultimate unbrick, the pit repartitions everything and also resets your binary counter (cha-ching! ). Once completed, your phone will reboot and be stuck at "...installing default apk files..." for a few minutes, don't panic, let it run its course. From there on, you can do the usual root/flash cwm deal. .

Agreed. On my desktop (quad core 6 gb ram, watercooled blablablabl) can't run heimdal nor Odin to save its life.
My netbook (single core atom) took me back from CM9 with Odin like it was nothing.
My 7 year old laptop (running Ubuntu) works great using Heimdal (just run the .jar file as an executable)

I've flashed lots of roms and never had any issues. Also looked through the forum and know the basics about getting back to stock. I'm no expert, but I have a decent idea what I'm doing. I do appreciate a forum you can ask questions though and have people help out when your stumped. I did what i could from the tools I have at my disposal here, and ran into some problems. I'm not yelling SOS, just asking for some tips as what I have tried hasn't worked. All the same I do appreciate everyones opinions and help they provide. THat's what makes this forum great.
why would you need to heimdall if you are on a rogers infuse? Isn't that for AT&T phones only?

Try to install the latest Samsung USB Drivers.
Also you can try plugging it to another computer/laptop, if it doesn't work either then there is a chance that the cord has gone bad. I know my computer doesn't recognize my phone when its on my USB extender but when I use the stock USB cord it detects it fine.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. Went to the AT&T repair facility and got it swapped out. You can find out where the closest one is from a retail store. Since Galaxy is so new, you probably shouldn't even need your receipt. If you are rooted, I hope you have a stock NANDROID backup of unrooted stock. I was afraid they would deny so I unrooted. Since I didn't have a NANDROID, and didn't want to flash ODIN and trip the counter, I ended up having to make a CWM flashable zip of stock, including stock recovery, using WIFI to transfer the file, and flash. I heard many tech don't care and will swap out for you either way. Hope you get it swapped w/o hassle!

Read my first post, my problem is that my phone wont connect to my computer through usb so i couldn't flash that tar even if i wanted to
I have the same problem and upon format in cwm it says dev/block unable to.format
There's a similar thread on this in the General section.

In short, IMO it's likely a cold solder issue. Have a long conversation with someone (45 min-hour) with the phone in your hand (so it heats up internally) then connect to a computer. If it comes up, you know it's a hardware issue. This was the case with mine.

Not sure which ROM you have now but try reflashing it again. Then see if USB shows up. If not, provide some more info, ROM, what you started with, etc.

It is also possible the contact of your usb is messed up. Try cleaning it with a soft brush. Use a different cord if you can. Try a different battery if you have one. Maybe even try flashing a port that uses LinuxBozo Hell Raiser kernel to see if the USB respond differently.
This may sound odd, but also try plugging the phone into the wall charger in mid boot or during the boot animation.
Thanks guys for all the suggestions I'm going to try them all hopefully I can get it working
OK so I cleaned terminals with deoxit did the pc suggestion and got it in download mode odin froze a few times (panic set in) but kept trying and it finally took back to stock thanks the help guys I appreciate it:good:

good deal, man.
part of the problem may be you trying to use odin.

Skyrocket will NOT connect to PC, have tried everything

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (SGH-I727 / AT&T) that I cannot get to connect to a PC after weeks of trying. I have tried to read through hundreds of threads regarding this issue and it seems others have had similar issues but nothing quite like this.
When I connect my phone to a PC, it does charge but Windows XP or Windows 7 will not recognize the phone. Anytime it is connected an error pops up stating "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
So to clarify, I have tried the following suggestions from others to troubleshoot and try to narrow down the issue:
1.) I have tried 4 separate USB cables, including the original OEM Samsung brand data cable that came with the phone.
2.) I have tried 3 separate PC's (2 with Windows 7, 1 with Windows XP).
3.) I have installed Samsung Kies on all 3 PCs, uninstalled and reinstalled the program as well as the Samsung Drivers on multiple occasions.
4.) I have done a factory/data reset on the phone twice to see if this was an issue caused by other apps I've downloaded in the past.
5.) I have tried to use USB Debugging/Developer option and then connect the phone to no avail.
6.) I have tried USB Mass Storage option before connecting the phone.
7.) I have tried to connect the phone to a PC in Samsung's default recovery mode and still showed it was not a recognizable device.
8.) I have tried a friend's galaxy S3 on all cables and PC's mentioned above and Kies immediately recognizes her phone.
9.) I have attempted to clean the physical microusb port with a small brush to make sure the contacts were clean and not being blocked by something.
10.)I have done a battery pull and about 20+ phone resets for all above mentioned attempts.
Based on all of these attempts without any success, it seems to me that this being a PHONE hardware issue is highly probable. I've ruled out just about every other scenario and I'm wondering at this point if my phone's Micro USB port is fried somehow.
Has anyone heard of this or is this a reasonable possibility?
I have tried just about everything I can so far, if anyone has any other suggestions or has any information that may confirm my suspicion, please let me know.
This all came about in the past week due to Jelly Bean being finally released by AT&T / Samsung for the Skyrocket and unfortunately, this update only seems to be available via Kies and a direct data cable to a PC. I have tried to go to Settings > About Phone > Software Update > Check for Updates (while connected to Wifi with a full battery) and the phone has told me 3 times over the past 3 days that my current Ice Cream Sandwich v4.0.4 Android is the most current software up to date. I'm guessing they're not planning on releasing Jelly Bean to the Skyrocket via OTA air updates....so now I'm stuck.

Wow, thank you so much. This is the first thing I've seen from anyone regarding a possible fix outside of direct USB connection. I sincerely appreciate it!

You should also try a different computer if you can. It works on my laptop but not my pc. I have no idea why and have tried everything I can think of. Also, use the usb ports on the back of the computer, not the front
Edit: sorry I didn't read your whole post.

Well after getting into the details on the post, it looks like this is created for a phone that already has a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP installed. Since I do not have a USB port to use on this phone as of right now, is there any way to install a custom recovery on my phone without using USB?
I did download the stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware directly on the phone's default directory already and it's sitting there in a zip format. If I'm not able to root and/or install a custom recovery without using a USB cable, would it be possible to install the stock firmware using the default samsung recovery mode?

if there is ive never seen it, let us know how, that is how to install a rom/firmware w/out custom recovery and w/a dead usb port
Crap if he's bone stock then no if it were stock rooted he could use dd commands with terminal emulator.
Also nowhere in his description did he ever say he deleted the old drivers from device manager.
Also I'm wondering how you are installing these drivers.

Well I did find this older thread that will supposedly allow me to install CWM and root without using a USB cable or PC. I'm going to try this since you all have confirmed that I'm not able to install a stock firmware/rom using stock recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Edit - Didn't work, apparently this was for 4.0.3, not 4.0.4.
I'm going to need to figure out how to root and get CWM on my phone just to install Stock Jelly Bean all without using a USB cable. Still no luck so far.

It wouldn't work. Nothing will install in Android System Recovery <3e>. Everything I tried still came back with Signature Verification Failed.
I also tried lifting the "tongue" inside the usb port on the phone several times previously and that didn't work either. I must assume at this point the usb daughterboard or something inside is messed up.
Since stock recovery can't install any type of files and I can't connect the phone to a PC in any way and my phone is 100% stock without root or any custom recovery, I can only imagine I'm stuck in this situation. I have yet to see any solutions for getting root or installing CWM without having a USB connection that works. Unless I can do either of those things, it looks like I'm SOL for updating from ICS to JB.
If they had only made Jelly Bean an Over the Air update, none of this would be a problem really.

Too dangerous the ota bricks tons of people when they do it I can only assume at&t is tired of it and opts for kies only. Also you could buy a daughter board and replace it. It's a relatively easy fix.

So .... lesson learned here is that you CANNOT root a phone or install any custom recoveries such as CWM or TWRP without having a working USB connection. As a result, you CANNOT install any updates, stock firmwares and especially custom roms without the above.
Only option at this point is to order the replacement part for the USB port on the phone or to purchase a new phone (if it's outside of the warranty period).

No you need USB to root that's it technically. If you have root you can install a recovery IMG without a computer using a terminal emulator and dd commands.

yes and no, its the chicken and the egg kind of question, for the sr to get root u need to flash the su files, but u need to have a custom recovery to flash the su files. is there a way to get the su files onto the sr w/out a custom recovery? I haven't seen one yet unless there was a oneclick method which I never used

I am wondering, however, if something like this would work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270

Rogers XT925. Unlocked GSM. Rooted stock Jelly Bean. Will not boot after reset. Help!

As the subject states I have a Roger's Razr HD (XT925) that was GSM unlocked for use here in the US. It was rooted and bootloader unlocked and used for a while without problem. I recently decided to upgrade to a new phone and did a factory reset of the HD in preparation to sell it. It got stuck in boot loop but I was able to boot fine in recovery and everything worked fine. I forgot power it off and the battery drained. When plugged into AC it will not charge. Plug it into a PC and USB connection sounds like it's loading drivers. Device manager shows QHSUSB_DLOAD. Any attempt to boot into recovery mode when plugged in yields a couple green flashes from the LED and that's it. When unplugged, absolutely nothing. I did make a Motorola data adapter and connected the phone to the PC. The green light comes on for a few seconds and then goes out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really need to revive this phone.
QHSUSB_DLOAD is a perma-brick, unfortunately. I haven't seen anyone on here recover from it.

Thanks. I'll check it out.
So I had chance to check out the link and I think the solution to the problem is simpler than that. I know the phone was booting into fastboot when it had a charge. It's possible my DIY factory cable isn't a good one. The RAZR/MAXX/AtrixHD have a simple two pin battery that can charged by opening the case. The battery for the HD has 4 pins however I cannot find the pinout for it. Can any tell me which are the positive and negative? I can cut and hook up an USB cable to them to charge the battery directly and then I should be able to boot the phone and repair the ROM.
Edit: I was able to get my hands on a multimeter and found that the there's 1 positive pin and 3 negative ones?!?!
did you try to leave your xt 925 plugged to pc for little while, then attempt to get it into fastboot?

Yes. I left it overnight.
Well then you cant do jack , i noticed battery stays ok in xt925 while on fastboot but I guess if batty is completely out, it is a different story. You will revive it man, gotta get hold of factory cable or a spare battery
OK... I have been able to charge the battery and can get to fastboot. Now I just the Rogers stock ROM because I thought I had the bootloader unlocked but don't. I found a couple links but the site is dead. The phone boots directly into AP fastboot.

Awesome! Thank you! I'm downloading it now.
I just can't win!!! I tried flashing that ROM with RSDLite 6.1.4 and now I'm getting a security downgrade error. Is there a newer ROM I should be using? I cannot seem to find it if there is.

Comment out TZ/Partition in XML when downgrading and already upgraded device. You're gonna need the tz/partition from a 4.4.2 build and flash those I believe. There's lots of info on this here just don't have it handy to link for you.

I don't find anywhere in the XML that has a tz/partition statement. Being that this is a Canadian device I only had the stock ICS on it.
I thought I had a Rogers RAZR HD after some research I found that I have a Fido one. So, I have to find the Fido ROM
