I'm really disappointed by Nvidia's given requirements for PC streaming. I have an EVGA GTX 560 Ti, which still outperforms the 650. So will it be possible to stream with my 500 series card, or has Nvidia blocked them from being able to stream period? If so, and I really do need a 650 or above, that's a bad move by Nvidia in my opinion and it feels like an effort to get me to buy a 600 series card.
EDIT: Well, I think I found the answer myself. Now I understand that 600 series cards are "Keplar" cards that have built in technology designed for streaming to devices, something that 500 series cards don't have. That makes sense, but still that's such a bummer. I have my fingers crossed for some kind of workaround or an app that will let 500 series cards stream. I don't want to shell out hundreds of dollars more for a new card right now.

You can use other Apps like Splashtop HD. But there is no way to use nVidia' streaming service.

If its running 1.6 how does it have, "Browser comes with Flash Lite version 3.1 and supports playback of SWF contents up to Flash 9 and ActionScript 2.0"

Nice, though it's a rip-off and I would prefer a more expensive one that really has competitive hardware to the iPad.
Not sure I want Android on a Slate, though. I think I'll wait for the HP Slate, since I want to be productive on the thing.
But I would prefer this over an ebook reader.

Im looking for more of a tablet, not ebook reader..i'm not a fan of the clamshell-touchscreen shape..very odd device imo..
Also you guys should check out enso-now.com they sell the 'zenPad'..its a pretty cool 5'' android tablet starting at $155, you can add gps for $25 and it has decent hardware specs..
Does anybody know anything about the Rockchip processor in it? I read somewhere that it was an ARM9 processor. That would be pretty old and slow. Wikipedia says it's based on Cortex-A8.
I am placing an order for one of these this next week. I contacted a different seller and they said that there are a few different versions. I am getting one with all the specs on that page except 4 gig nand and 512 ram. Now hopefully someone that knows alot more than I do will start releasing roms for it so I can get it running the way my G1 is.
can you please post a link/price to the one you bought? I'd love to see custom roms for these...

Hi
I receive this tablet, that cool, but just under android 1.5. 2gb flash memory. Autonomy not very large with wifi, but with no wifi that cool. With mp3 active I listen music about 3 hours and I past 100 % to 70 %, that cool.
Now I would like to past to 1.6 or 2.1, seller says me that will arrive but when I do not know (like him...).
So if dev can give support, I take it.

You sound foreign. As if you are the seller of this crappy 7 inch tablet (from HK).
Are you trying to save face after another poster said that the processor was ancient?
Your also trying to see if someone will hack away and make this tablet Android 2.1.
Fat Chance.
This processor would choke on Droid 2.1.

I put in an order for one of these yesterday, I'm definitely interested to see how well it preforms. If it is a fairly obvious process I'll crack mine open and take some shots of the internals for you guys. I'm guessing it will take about 2 weeks shipping though so don't expect anything soon.
As for getting a newer kernel onto these I would happily offer any assistance I can.
I think the biggest issues for me are
Marketplace access
Video benchmarking (bitrates and container formats)
Uniformity of these devices. These are offered by a few hundred sellers under at least 4 names hopefully they all are identical hardware wise as it will make drivers easier to write.
slaming These have a 600MHz ARM core and a 550MHz DSP for video decoding. Some sellers are adding these together and rounding up to claim a 1.2GHz clock speed. Its an old and regrettable tactic.

Also mattrb you really need to take a chill pill "You sound foreign. As if you are the seller of this crappy 7 inch tablet (from HK)." is just about the most bigoted thing I've heard this week. The guy was being helpful telling you his experiences with battery endurance and you insult him, don't be childish.
BTW a little more info about the Rockchip 2808. From the research I have done it looks like this chip is based around the arm926 core. It isn't the fastest thing out there but it gets the job done. If the Rockchip version has onchip cache it should be quite decent indeed. Supposedly this core produces 220MIPs at 200MHz in the stock configuration so we should expect roughly 660MIPs at 600MHz. For comparison a Motorola Droid is based on the Cortex A8 at 600MHz which makes about 1200MIPs. The actual iPad uses the Cortex A9 core clocked at 1Ghz and produces about 2500MIPs (surely as we are without all of apple's crappy code we will have a serious advantage ). Also I have seen a few notes about a this chip being used in some devices at 886Mhz (google the Tongfang-q5). I doubt that there are different versions of the chip produced and I doubt even more the manufacturer would be overclocking the chip without some testing that it remained reliable. Hopefully this means we can squeeze some more cycles out of these tablets. This will obviously be at the expense of battery life and to some degree longevity. But at this price who cares *lmao*.
A little update: I confirmed that the Rockchip 2808 is a licensed ARM926EJ-S derivative wwwdotarm.com/community/partners/display_product/rw/ProductId/4010/ stupid link blocking
Second update: I just started a wikipedia page for the rockchip family. Any info you can provide would be most helpful. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockchip

If so £70 (price & delivery) seems ludicrously cheap. At that price even if it's not brilliant it's got to be worth it right?
I am a newbie to this board. I purchased a micro sd card at Amazon. It worked for one day on my transformer. I took it out and then inserted it the following day. It got swallowed up and I couldn't remove it. My transformer also didn't recognize that the SD card was there. It took many hours to remove it. I ended up using a fine pair of twizzers. I read that amazon is carrying a lot of fake SD cards from China...read the reviews on Amazon if you are interested. I wonder if that was the problem...however I used a adapter and the card worked fine on my computer but not on my droid phone nor camera where it alerted me the card was damaged.
Has this happened before? Is this a glitch with the transformer...the card getting stuck? Since it was day 13 of purchasing it at Best Buy, I returned it. Now I want another one and can't decide to wait and purchase the prime or buy the same one cheaper.
I also had another problem with my tablet. I like watching House on Fox TV. It was barely possible. I would get alerts saying my mobile is not compatible. I got a lot of streaming issues where it would stop every few seconds and load up.
Does anyone know if the prime would solve this issue? It only has 1gb of ram. Watching Netflix was fine...not Fox TV.
thanks in advance
i can't help you with the memory card but it's usually a good idea to stick with the name brand cards.
i say good job on returning the transformer while you still could. i think the prime is a pretty big leap over the original and at an extra $100 it's a bargain imo.
as for the netflix versus foxtv viewing. netflix was probably fine because you were using the netflix app. foxtv is laggy because it is probably running through flash which the transformer couldn't handle properly for some reason. flash on android in general is a mixed bag and i don't know if the extra power of the prime will fix it. my guess is it will be better but can't say by how much. i think when prime eventually gets the ice cream sandwich update is when we'll truly see what it's capable of which hopefully is a whole lot.
From the sounds of it more like you insert it wrong or something as opposed to a fake sd card. Fame or not it should go on and out the same imo
I don't know what happened. It wasn't inserted wrong. I pushed it in and it went in too far and I didn't have the grip of my nails to pull the SD out.
I just saw an ad for the original transformer with 32gb for $389. I'm still can't decide to wait and pay the extra $125+++ and get the prime just for speed but 16GB or spend $389 and get a larger 32 GB drive. I am not using it for games but just for movies. I also hope to use the movie maker app to edit my long videos and burn to DVDs.
anyone think it is worth it to wait for the prime which is somewhat lighter in weight in but faster than the origjinal--- or buy the original with double the GB for a lot cheaper price now and use it for 6 months and wait for what ASUS offers after the first of the year when they get even a faster tablet and buy it then after all the kinks are worked out with the operating system?
The prime is built to aim more towards gamers than anyone else. The quad/quint core is only used to its full potential when dealing with graphically intense apps... like games.
For most other purposes, the transformer 1 is more than capable of handling.
Regarding the card issue, this is the first I've heard of it. But I'll tell you this. I don't know if you inserted it wrong or not, since I wasn't there. But through all my years of tech help of other people, the #1 issue that most people run into when they say they have a bad card or their device card slot is bad is actually them inserting the card wrong. I'll leave it at that.
Please feel free to ask plenty of questions. Myself and other experienced android users will be more than happy to help you. I may appear cranky at times, but that's just my other personalities. Take my advice. Multiple personality disorder, when left untreated, can result in poor health and social relationships with others.
thanks for your advice. So you are saying this quad processor won't make streaming or viewing movies any faster ---or video editing [large files of copy, cut and paste] quicker? I am a graphic artist and hope one day that I can find a photoshop -equal app where I can take big files and tweek them while keeping my processor quick enough during this action.
otherwise I will buy the original 32gb tablet for $389 and replace it in a year or two when tablets are more advance and prices hopefully are better.
Someone on here got a used Transformer from Amazon and was pretty stoked about it; it still had most of the plastic on it and didn't look as if it'd been used much, if at all. You could swoop up a 32GB unit for $297 (it's also eligible for a SquareTrade warranty, if you're into that [some cats swear by it]) and chill with that till Prime shows up and is worked out. Just a thought!

That would be a yes and no. In theory if it brings enough of the processor cores online for the job, yes by brute force. Also yes in the sense that something there is probably a way for a movie player to take advantage of it, but no in the sense that you probably won't find such a soon enough to care, and no in the sense that at the hardware level it might not always. Logic there: AFAIK they use a baby core for simple tasks and start reving up to the quadtacular power house as needed, so e.g. if you just e-mail you get mega battery life. Try playing Need For Speed non stop and it'll drain faster but run smooth.
Can't say if it's any good but there is an Adobe Photoshop Express app; for simple tasks it might suffice but it may vastly fall short of what you may need. My expertise in your field is minimal so take it with a grain of salt.

You mention that you could not grip the card with your nails to pull it out. To remove the card, you push in on it to release it and it should pop far enough out to grab with your fingers. It is not like the sim card on some phones that you pull out. It is a push to insert ( till it clicks) then push again ( till it clicks) to remove.

I didn't say that. I said to the average user or users who don't game or don't care much for those really high pixel movies won't notice a difference. If you're a graphic artist, then yes the prime will be perfect for you. Again, it all comes down to what you want to use it for.

thanks for all your advise. I will wait and get the prime...however I am quite disappointed that the new docking has only 1 USB and not 2....
regarding inserting the SD card that got stuck. Yes, it is possible I didn't push it in hard enough to have it pop out but it was stuck so far in it the port that I was afraid to try to push more to ejact the SD. Regardless when it was stuck in my old transformer didn't recognize it
ok so this video about tegra 3 says that flash performance will be greater than before

Hey everybody I'm in the market for a new computer and I'm getting a laptop for several reasons. Anyway I am looking to be able to build aosp ROMs from source for my galaxy nexus. I have been told I should get something with at least 4gbs of ram. How much HD space should I get? I will be putting Ubuntu on it when I get it. I've been looking online at some different models, not sure if I see anything I like or can afford lol. Price range BTW is like $300-500. Maybe a little more. Thanks in advance for any insight
Well, my standard question is "why a laptop"? You could build a very decent desktop for that price. I understand needing portability - but what kind of power needs to actually be portable? Desktop + Chromebook (or other low-priced solution) could even possibly be squeaked out, very nearly in that price-range. You could skip a video card in the desktop at first, and if you don't play video games probably wouldn't miss it too much.
Anyway, if you still really want a laptop, I'd ask you to think exhaustively about what you'll do with it. Any video games? Anything that needs a good GPU? AMD still has some good deals when it comes to laptops without a dedicated GPU (if you don't need one) - and at your price point will outperform any integrated Intel ones. You can get a laptop with dedicated GPU in your price-range, but it really depends on what you need.
I don't think HDD space is a huge issue - I'd want at least 350-500Gb,but could make due with less. It depends on what you're going to put on it. I know some people can tear through terabytes with HD video collections. If you plan on having a lot of "collection" type data, an external solution might be best - and/or a backup disk, always good to have.
At your price range, I'd look for sales, "scratch and dent" deals, and used machines.
I had an Inspiron for a while and I and everyone I've know who had one ended up with problems / failures. On a whole, a desktop is likely to be around longer - since failures are inevitable and at least you can easily access and replace them I a desktop.
I'd probably check out Craigslist if I was you - see what people are selling locally (since shipping will add quite a bit)

I am very interested in getting a Shield, but unfortunately, I have dual Radeon 5750s graphic cards, and do not have 600 to 700 to buy a shield and upgrade a graphics card. I would like to know if anyone is familiar with the streaming technology and can it be hacked to work with older Nvidia cards or even an older Radeon cards (like my two XFX 5750s). If it is possible to do this, I think it will make the shield look a lot more interesting to a lot more people.
i am not a programmer but i don't think its gonna be vary hackable because they say its hardware reliant. something the 600 and 700 series GPU's have inside them. however there are other options for ATI cards such as splashtop gamepad
but we won't know for certain untill it launches.

I can try to answer this, and hopefully won't be saying anything that would get me in trouble. The reason it requires a GTX 650 or better is because it requires some special hardware to reduce the latency. Having played with both Splashtop and SHIELD, the different between the two is significant. It is different in both quality (although SHIELD requires more bandwidth) and latency, where Spashtop has a "delayed reaction" issue making many games mildly annoying to play.
I think NVIDIA was smart is making sure the GTX 650 had the hardware, as this does give a relatively low cost of entry for people who have older cards and could use an upgrade anyway without spending a large amount on it.
So the Forge TV was presented at CES and I'm pretty interested at his ability to stream game from the pc, even if it's not an high-end one. But the software use for the stream, Razer Cortex: Stream, will cost 40$ which I find pretty annoying. Let's hope that it can be install on the Nexus Player. And maybe with the introduction of this device it will give abump to the development of AndroidTV which is on the neutral. Any thoughs?

It might give it a bump, just like Sony's, Sharp's, and Phillips' TVs. Also, you can bet that Steam's streaming will work on Android TV.
I'm not interested in the Razer Cortex, though, because it will likely break due to Razer's commitment to manufacturing quality hardware.

Limelight (free on Play Store) works perfectly for streaming PC games to my TV via the Nexus Player. FYI. It taps into the Nvidia API used by the Shield devices, so you do need an Nvidia card to use it... but it works great.

I agree that the $40 price is annoying but razer is a company and unless you want them to come out with their own App store (i dont want that) then they need to make their money other ways.
$40 for Streaming Service
$120 for Keyboard and Mouse
$80 for the Controller
$99 for the Device
$150 for Device and Controller
What im a bit concern with is that this is an ARM device and the Nexus Player is an Intel Device. which might cause some fragmentation. Plenty of apps that worked fine on the Ouya/Mojo/FireTV dont work on the Nexus Player. If this device didnt have google cast and android tv i wouldnt even consider purchasing especially after my experience with the Mojo from Madcatz (another gaming hardware company).
Also im a bit curious with their reasoning for using a snapdragon processor instead of an Nvidia K1/X1 or going with an Intel chip espcially since Intel is one of their major investors.

The majority of apps not "working" on the Nexus Player have to do more with availability (developer needs to flag it for Lollipop and/or Android TV compatibility) than x86 vs. ARM. Android's runtime handles the compatibility between x86 and ARM (hence why the ARM version of Kodi works just fine on the Nexus Player, among many other examples). Granted, there is a performance hit running ARM code on x86, but compatibility issues have largely been negated.

SOC cost. You're not getting a Tegra K1 box for $99, unless the OEM wants to forgo any profit. I'm willing to bet the profit margin on this box alone is fairly thin, with the majority of their profit being made up by accessories.
Sure, they could have probably sold a Tegra K1 box with 64GB of storage for about $179. However, people aren't spending more than $99 on a streaming box today. For that kind of price they want a legit console (Xbox 360 is $180/$250 retail for 4GB/500GB versions, PS3 is $200/$250 for 12GB/500GB).
And no, they can't sell a 500GB HDD-based Android TV for $250. Sony and MS sell their hardware at a well documented loss because they get a cut of EVERY game and licenced accessory sold for it. Razer isn't getting a cut of anything other than their own hardware.

The Obox will be available in numerous configurations, of which a Tegra K1 was one option (they fail to specify if K1 or K1 Denver, which are two different SOCs). Also, this nugget followed:
Though retail prices aren't yet available, a representative said they could range from $99 to $499 depending on the model.

I don't see them offering their highest end SOC in their cheapest model. Do you? Also, keep in mind that they announced that this is an Android box, not an Android TV device (just a note, as this comment has no bearing on your $99 Tegra STB comment).
However, it's a possibility that they could launch in China only at a conversion rate below $99. That's EASY to do given exchange rates and the fact that Chinese OEMs rarely pay hardware/software/codec licensing costs. Or, they could pull an Ouya. Remember, Ouya shocked everyone with their $99 Tegra 3-based STB...but by the time it hit widespread availability, Tegra 4 was already in full swing. Not so impressive. I just don't see Obox having a competitive $99 hardware option at mass retail availability within 1 sales quarter of the Razer Forge TV.
In time, we'll see if you're right. I hope that you are, but suspect that you're not.
The only think appealing to me about this device is the 16gb storage, the qualcomm processor on it is lacking compared to the Intel 64 Bit processor, soon enough we'll have good app2sd and this wont be an issue

Really, for game streaming all the work is being done on the PC and you're just receiving a video stream. I'm not sure there will be much a difference between the 805 and intel CPU. I have the 805 on my Turbo and use limelight it works great over wifi (AC 433). I imagine it will be just as good or better over gigabit. I am curious to see how AC is implemented though. Like I said the 805 on my Turbo connects at 433mbps or if the use a better implementation at 867mbps like the NP.
