[Q] Android 4.2 or maybe 4.3? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had read in a lot of forums at XDA and at Sam Mobile that we are going to have an update for "5.0" but anyone knows if we are going to have an official updated for the Note 10.1 for 4.2.2? The Hardware of the Note 10.1 is very capable for running 4.2.2

I don't think anyone but Samsung really know for sure, but at least the popular rumors I've read have speculated either a 4.2 or 4.3 update sometime after the note 3 is announced. Of course these were the same rumor mills that speculated a 4.2 update for us back in June so I take it all with a grain of salt - especially any 5.0 update.

Kind of weird because the Note 8 and Galaxy Tab 2 7 received a week ago a 4.2.2 update :/

ICS for Galaxy devices delayed?

So back in December, Samsung stated that ICS would be available for Galaxy devices in Q1 2012 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2397850,00.asp - among other sources).
Someone asked on Facebook when the update for the Galaxy Nexus S was coming and Samsung stated that "ICS updates for Galaxy devices will be available in early Q2." (https://www.facebook.com/samsungmobilecanada/posts/10150560045396050)...
Idk, that may be a bit different because the Nexus S is in the original Galaxy S family. Those are going to be updated after all the Galaxy S2 devices. They actually weren't even going to release the update for those phones initially.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Some rumors said march first, which would be q1 and not going to happen. Some leaked document i saw said april which would be early q2. God knows what they are doing over there. I want aosp/cm9 anyway, but if they release ics it might help get us closer.
I am so sick of this too.....
From now on I am only getting Nexus Devices
I'm sick of it too, but used to it. They just released official Gingerbread for the Captivate (my previous phone) a few weeks ago after XDA users had been running leaked versions for several months. But the devs here on XDA already have (as I understand it) some pretty kickass ICS roms available for the Captivate.
Don't hold your breath waiting for AT&T/Samsung. We'll have ICS here on XDA long before they make it officially available (but...without a secure element we won't be able to use Google Wallet--not sure how they're going to solve that one...re-issued sim cards maybe?)
Sounds like it's all Galaxy devices:
https://www.facebook.com/samsungmobilecanada/posts/10150560045396050
That being said, I wasn't holding my breath either for an official release but figured when one came it might help speed up some things here on XDA or for the CM guys.
And yeah, I was running ICS on my Cappy for a couple months before it died (needed a new mobo so the cost of upgrading to the SGS II LTE was actually cheaper than the repair on my Cappy - go figure)... the official Samsung/Rogers upgrade cycle on the Cappy was horrendous as well, bought it with Froyo, an hour later had CM7 on it, and it wasn't long afte they updated officially to GB that I was running TeamHacksung ICS alpha builds on it.
We'll be lucky to get official ICS before Jellybean is released
That is Samsung mobile Canada stating that. So may be different for us in the states. But what I think is funny is the vivid is getting the update soon, and if I'm not wrong both phones came out on the same day. So no blaming this on the carrier this time. Damn Sammy LOL.

True, it is Samsung Mobile Canada - I wasn't expecting us (or the US) to get it in Q1 anyways (officially) as the original statement I believe was for the international versions of the Galaxy S II/Note. Still, was hoping that the international stock rom would help jump/fix kinks some of the developers here are trying to overcome.
I'm in Canada, so I can only hope

To clarify, they only said the international versions of the S II and the Note would get it in Q1. The others that were announced to get ICS have never been given a time frame, other than that they would follow those two.
There seems to be a lot of confusion on that point.

Yes, I do understand that fully. Not holding my breath that the international version will be rolling out any time soon either.
Looking into the dev forum there are two promising roms one in alpha 1 with basic functions working and another one that the mods and the dev keep fighting over is a lot further along but I think was taken down again :-(. I'm guessing we have about a month maybe a bit more before we have some awesome functioning ics rom's
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
Well Q1 is still not done with, we got a whole month for them to hopefully release.

He's probably right, if the galaxy nexus has it, with an SOC which isn't so dissimilar to ours, they're probably sitting on it. I was also over in the t989 forum and it was stated the kang Juggernaut devs got an ics samsung release leak but are sitting on it as well. If they have it, guarantee for our phones its done

Will there be a new Nexus this year?

Serious question , will there be another Nexus phone this year?
I'm thinking if there is, well Jelly Bean was just the tip of the iceberg. If there will be a new Nexus or Nexuses, there will be another OS update.
Your thoughts?
What got me thinking this is the new notification curtain. It looks professional, and no longer cartoonish. Android is taking on a more polished look.

I have to agree. Jellybean was a big deal with project butter. If Android 4.2 or 5.0 is released before 2013, OEMs are going to have a serious problem with updating their devices. But if they don't release a new nexus soon, they will have no competitor to the iPhone 5 besides the gnex, which would be nearly a year old. Even thought jellybean makes the phone so much faster, there's a limit of hardware (especially the camera).
So Google actually needs to release a new nexus, still with JB
Sent from my MB508 using xda premium
Phones releasing each year, that's crazy heh. I wonder what would be the specifications of the new Nexus and if it will have a bigger screen than 4.3/4.6
my guess:
october: nexus 10 (tablet 10"), google tv nexus(with jelly bean)
so google will have five nexus in the play store: galaxy nexus, nexus q, nexus 7, nexus 10, google tv nexus
maybe these will be those five nexus they were talking about a few months ago and not five new nexus phones

This makes since, but I still don't see Google releasing any device with Android without an updated OS.
Maybe Android 4.2

Like I said, Google needs a competitor to the next gen iPhone, but cannot release a new version of Android this year when manufacturers are still trying to get ICS in the 3rd quarter.
Thus, to compete with the iPhone, they need a new Nexus, but since OEMs seriously suck at updates, and since JB was released 7/12 of the year through, the next Nexus(ii?) will be on Jellybean. See this article: http://www.androidcentral.com/why-we-dont-need-another-version-android-year?style_mobile=0

We need a phone that's 10 inches.
Maybe Jelly Bean 4.1.5, because 4.1.1 is already out.
My money is on a update plus new hardware.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
I can see the new nexus device coming around dec and having quad core with on screen buttons and i can see it having Android 4.2. But I probably predict that the update will not be that big and still keep the JB name like when Android 2.0 went to Android 2.1 and it still kept the Éclair name
It would be great. That would mean a slight price drop on the Galaxy Nexus and a new device with better overall hardware one would hope. Maybe something with a shape conducive to fashioning a clamshell keyboard that will fit it.
I think there will be a new Nexus phone before the end of the year. I hope it comes with the Exynos quad core with LTE that probably wasn't ready in time for the SG3 US release, forcing the processor swap.

White Nexus 4 and Android 4.3 coming June 10th?
Rumours suggested that a white Nexus 4 might appear at Google I/O, and they were right. We obtained the elusive white Nexus 4 and we can confirm it’s a carbon copy of the previous Nexus 4, just with a different color casing. That might not be the most exciting news, but we also learned the white Nexus 4 would hit the Google Play store on June 10th and it would be accompanied with Android 4.3.
Most of us expected Google to announce Android 4.3 at yesterday’s big keynote, but it sounds like the next version of Android was intentionally bumped from the show. Sources at Google say they wanted to demonstrate their ability to roll out new services and APIs without upgrading the Android firmware, and it appears they made their point.
Not much is known about Android 4.3, but we expect it to be a rather minor update. The developer API level should be bumped up to version 18, with support for Bluetooth Smart (and*possibly*OpenGL ES 3.0), and that’s about all we know. We are unable to confirm this, but we assume that Android 4.3 will be pushed out to all current Nexus devices (4, 7, 10) when it goes live next month.
The Nexus 4 might not be the most exciting device on the block anymore, but it’s still a damn good value with a starting price of $299.

I was also surprised as "leaks" from "trusted sources" were revealed minutes before the keynote began.
The nexus 7 is 1 year old now, that's a really long time in this category...
1 year isn't all that old, is it? Plus it could be a sign that the platform is starting to mature, and not act as such a moving target. I'd certainly welcome that.

But im pretty sure we will get it some day. Also I think there is a problem with incompatibility from snote from note 3..a lot of complains will happen if the note 10.1 upgrade with it and people cang open files
Which model are you guys talking about?
I have a GN GT-N8013 ( 64G GNote 10.1 original ) and am still waiting for Samsung to come out with 4.3.

Call it insider knowledge.
Note 2 and SGS3 having similar internals are supposed to get upto Android 4.4 Kitkat..so why not?
But having said that both these phones have only just started getting 4.3 few days back in some regions, so who knows Kit Kat can take couple of years to come to Note N8000, when Google release android 5
Its really a shame on Samsung, they should only release a limited number of devices each year for which they can release timely updates..
As it sits right now, we are 3 OS versions back. We will get an update in the (near?) future. Will we get 4.4? Probably. Will it be before the end of 2014? Right now it seems unlikely.

Sorry guys if this is going a *little* bit off-topic (I'm going to talk about Android 4.3, rather than 4.4, but hey, still about an update for our awesome yet forgotten 10.1....)
It's a quote from a reply on other thread, by me.
I recently spoke to a Samsung rep (Samsung's website live chat) and with a Samsung rep (in person). Both said:
"it will be updated, at least to Android 4.3, but we cannot tell you when".
So I'm pretty sure we are getting 4.3 at some point. Heck, if the Note 2 and S III got it, it's only reasonable that our Note 10.1 gets it. It was the flagship tablet of its (short) time, such as the Note 2 and S III being flagships/high-end. Everyone's been saying that Samsung won't update it to force us go for the Note 10.1 2014 edition, so why did the Note 2 and Galaxy S III get the update (ok, ok, Galaxy Gear blabla)? Wouldn't they force you to go for a Note 3 and Galaxy S IV? You get my point.
So, be prepared to wait (wait... wait... wai...), and official news about the updates *cough kitkat* are coming.
My guess is: Android 4.3 and no Android 4.4, unfortunately but thankfully.

well.. actually with KitKat the have gone reverse. like a phone with 512 mb can run it.
Some older model (2010) phones are capable of running a slimed version of kitkat
So there is no chance that our beloved note 10.1 couldnt run it
There are several other threads on this topic. It possibly depends on combinations of hardware and ROMs. I'm quite sure it started after the upgrade to xxucma8. It could be a combination of certain apps. But it's a nuisance.
NO Note 2 Phone updated
I keep seeing this several times on this forum . The NOTE 2 Phone has not got the 4.3 update. There is no word on when we will get it. A few days back there was a so Called leak for the [email protected] Version. Some have tried it on t-mobile(what i have note 2 phone. But with Large issues. I cant say how this leak is running on a at&t note 2.
So the bottom line is NO Update for note 2 phone.

Didnt 2014 just came on sale in Canada? I think this is the problem - 2014 model isnt even sold world wide. I think they want people to replace their old 2012 models to new one. If they update the 2012 model, people wouldnt see any reason to upgrade or buy newer and more expenisive device. Dont know... just speculating...
But budget price tab2 gets an update before their premium line device - this is something you wont expect to see and happen when buying a premium prize device. You expect to get a premium class customer care, dont you? Unfortunately it seems to be something special that Samsung cannot offer... A flagship without updates... so sad...

"The only hard number thrown out today is 18 months. That's how long future hardware will be in the support cycle" (from your link above)
Support and applicable updates. I didnt see that they said phones will get all Android updates. As far as I know, there is no such contract. If you wish to get Android updates, only Nexus line is supported for 18 months.
Samsung is known to be lazy but this is too much for a premium class flagship model. It's already 10months I got A4.1. and then nothing while my bfs budget prize Asus Tf300 has 4.2 (already 6 months ago).

Yes, it's true, Asus is superb, as always when it comes to firmware updates. Very close to Nexus line.
However, their QC is another story.
BTW, anyone who says Sony is great with updates haven't any experience with their VAIO line.
