Is there a good writeup on the requirements for setting up a 2.1 bootscreen? I've seen some nice 1.5/6 ones and i'd like to port them over the 2.1.
THanks!
i'm pretty sure you can do it the same way.
All of the 1.5 style bootscreens use an xml format with animated gifs, while it seems the 2.1 ones are PNG frames with a dat type control file.
You can still use the old bootscreens, you just have to remove bootanimation.zip, create a bootscreen folder inside /system/media, then drop your bootscreen in there.
I've flashed zips that do exactly that and they never work for me.
bootanimation.zip removed. reboot.
flash whatever bootscreen. /system/media/bootscreen is created. contains gif, xml, and audio. get blackscreen during boot and not animation.
the only ones I have gotten to work are tailored for 2.1 specifically.

post one of the zips up and let me take a look at it, maybe something's different in the xml.
And you are on Sprint? Some people have been having troubles if they are not on Sprint.

Thanks Regaw. You're right i'm Cellsouth.
The ones that work for me are folders containing PNG frames and a desc file (no xml). There is a supernova out that works fine and it has this format. I have access to GIMP so i've considered pulling all the frames out of one of the gifs, saving them as PNG and then recreating the directory structure I see in a standard bootanimation.zip. However, I haven't seen a batch method in GIMP for saving the frames as individual PNG files so it would kind of be a pain in the arse.
I've tried many of the ones in the 2.1 collection thread, same results every time. phone works great just the black screen during boot.
okkkkkkkkkk...........
so...
Can someone tell me the format for creating a bootanimation.zip that uses a desc file and PNG files? I've looked at the desc file and can obviously see where it has resolution info and references the part folders, hasn't anyone created a bootscreen in this format before though?
Thanks.
After speaking to joerkc, I agreed to change the title of this thread.

More to come...
please make sure there are previews =)
Here's one I did for ardynalynes FrankenRom
I take no credit for pic, only for converting it and zipping it.
Madface not as clear as I would like it to be.
here's one I made, was just screwing around and generally testing to make it worked.. just rename to PB311IMG.zip
Here's some of the ones I made...
The first one's (incredible_black_splash) based off of the original splash screen, except the colors are inverted and the "TM" was removed (I get it HTC, you have a copyright on the name... BUT IT KILLS THE AESTHETICS!)
Next, we have just the HTC logo by itself, white on black (incredible_htc_splash_black)
...and then black on white (incredible_htc_splash_white)
I like to keep things simple. Enjoy!
EDIT: also, wouldn't it be great if this was stickied and a similar thread was made for boot animations that was also stickied? Then you'd have a one-stop shop for all your boot tweaking needs!
finally got it working....
after a few failed attempts, finally got splash working! first of probably many more to come...
My Splash Screen
Looks a lot better than pic

My contribution:
This came out really good on the Inc!
Droid Eye/Logo, C3Po/R2D2 as Androids, HTC Incredible Logo
Unrevoked Image with Droid Eye & Logo, C3PO & R2D2 as Androids, and the HTC Incredible Image. I do not own any of these images. Pulled them all from Google and compiled.
Hot babe splash screen... enjoy!
Well, I figured it was about time I contribute something to the community.
Please give me feedback.
Thanks.

Really want to turn this into a boot animation and/or live wallpaper. Goes well with the stock boot animation.
Made a mixture of a few boot animations for my DROID X.
Rotten Apple
Stock DROID boot
NeXus Holiday Red
Then added (and mixed horribly) a sound I made from Apple startup, then some stock DROID auido files.
Sorry if its rotated, I forgot about that when I filmed it, but that actual phone and file are in portrait mode. Also, sorry about the "fisheye". My camera is a compact hand held with a 10x zoom. That close, and the lens warped the image a bit.

I have been able to get bootanimations to play on my droid x with sound. I took the following steps to enable this. I used root explorer to move the files.
1. Download the attached file. This file is one that I removed from a R2D2 D2.
2. Unzip the file and save the file to your sdcard. The file is labeled bootanimation.
3. Use root explorer and go to the folder /system/bin.
4. In that folder locate the file named bootanimation and save it as bootanimation2
5. move the file that you just renamed to your sdcard
6. move the new file that you downloaded and placed on your sdcard to the folder /system/bin
7. simple as that.
You will need to make sure that what ever audio file that is assigned to your bootanimation is saved in the folder /system/media
Have to give squidlymandingo a thanks for supplying the files from the R2D2 D2. Thanks

That is how you apply sound. the .zip is located at
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/85339-adding-boot-sound-x.html
I have already edited the desc.txt to play one sound at the beginning of the animation. you can use what ever file you want, but it has to be named android.mp3
The sound file needs to be place in the /system/media/ folder, along with the boot animation.
EDIT:: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AY9FDTRL Link for the zip with bootanimation, sound file, and the /system/bin/ file.
Looks great. Where can we download it from?
I want this too. Looks great.

Anybody want to host the files? Im not sure of a good free site to do it at.
Also, PM with emails and ill send out the animation.
Let me know if u want sound too, as that requires a few extra steps which i will post later/
megaupload.com is a good site to use and its free.
Added link to first post
Very nice mix. Only downside is that I'm gonna be booting my Dx a lot at the bar with my iPhone hobbled friends now
Any one get it to play sound from the start? Tried changing out that bootanimation file in /system/bin/ no luck. Plus the last image from the animation never went away. just showed the image, then i did the slide to unlock and it went to my homescreen.

Define "from beginning".
My phone has the bong right when the apple appears.. maybe a quarter second delay.
and ive never heard nor seen the last image staying until you unlock.
ok sound plays and animation fixed. I turned your files into an update.zip.
Left in my transformers sound. But its cut off when it starts playing the second set of file.
any work around for this? Do I have to break the audio into 2 seperate files and tell the second one to play once the second animation starts?
Also, what are the restrictions on the files, for instance, i tried to change the hue on another bootani so the colors were closer to the theme i was on. But after changing the hue the animation wont play. Ideas?

IM new to all this, so i will give you what i know
The breaking up the sound. I am not sure, but you can try it. In the desc.txt you will notice there is a
480 480 13
(stuff)
s android.mp3
(stuff)
***Just add a s (name of file).mp3 here. I am not sure, but i think it may loop with the animation.
for changing the hue, what do you have right now? Whats in the bootaniamtion file. Also, remember when you zip the file it needs to be in store compression, or no compression.

I wonder if its the compression messing it up. DO you know why it has to have no compression?
Pm me your email. I will send you and update.zip with all your stuff. Use 7zip or what ever to browse the file structure, its super easy to figure out.
do you know what those lines in the desc.txt mean?

PM sent, and i dont know why it has to have no compression, but i do know (from trial and error)that if there is compression, you will get a black screen until its time to unlock your phone.
UPDATE: I am currently looking into taking Movie, or music video clips, and turning them into bootanimations. Im not taking requests, as i am very busy with the move, but I will tell you if this is feasible, and if its easily done i will post up what and how to do it
so what does the "13" indicate on the first line? Im guessing the 480 480 is the HxW of the image.
the other animation im messing with, i can now zip it (without compression) and it works, but once i add the "s android.mp3" it wont show the animation.
in this one it is "480 480 10"

are you putting any space or anything in there? (inbetween the lines)?
So I've got an idea or two for a custom boot animation for my Droid X but I can't seem to find an *updated* How-to guide on how to do it.
I've read that the image files need to be PNGs but what type of PNG, do they need to have transparency? How many files can does the animation need to be? Can it be installed via the Clockwork loader or is it only via terminal commands, etc.?
Any info would be greatly appreciated
All are png. Using photoshop just save as a png image. U will need to edit alot of photos as some boots have over 100. They are in two folders one with the start up and the other a repeated loop. You will need a comand file that gives the size and the fps. Dl a boot and take apart a zip. You will see how it all comes together.

Can the images be created from another format? I plan on creating a simple 3D spinning logo and saving the animation out as sequential images but can't remember if 3dsmax outputs PNGs or not.
I also came across this guide...anyone know if this works for the DX?

I have always used png as that's what the stock boots are made with. You can try jpeg it wont hurt the phone. It would just not show up when you boot. Its all about trial and error with this stuff. Play around.

Jpg works just fine. I have made multiple animations, including mixing ones that are already made. I just finished up a boondock saints one, just waiting to upload to youtube.
Gentlemen, I would like to present to you......
Boondock Saints: The Boot Animation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdDzfmHrLw8
The Boot Logo is from:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-2-hacks/88531-changing-moto-logo.html
on the 3rd or 4th page.
The Download link is a install.zip through bootstrap is here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AVFQU34L
The animation is all .JPG and is supposed to cut out after the chains drop.
Nice boot animation Casen, Im a huge Boondock Saints fan, thumbs up for the animation Any help with how you added video to your bootanimation?
Now, speaking of the OP, I just created my own boot animation today and it took some help but I am learning. My boot animation is on YT. Look for Irishsmyles as the user. Sorry not able to post outside links due to restrictions
I used photoshop and used the animation option under window. Created seperate images and then put them in a gif, named theme in sequential order using 5 digits 00000, 00001, etc. The trickiest part and part that I needed help was the desc.txt part but I am starting to understand that now. I may post a video on my YT channel so look for that tomorrow. But my Droid X rocks that much more now that I have a custom boot logo, animation, and wallpaper added
Ive tried a bunch of tutorials and multiple modifications and file types but im still not able to get my boot animation to work
Im trying to turn this Tsar Bomba (biggest Atom Bomb ever)video into a boot animation
Tsar Bomba
Nothing seems to work. Ive tried playing with the dpi and bit depth settings, reducing the number of png files, using different naming for the PNG files (some tutorials say different things) etc but still nothing
I have attached my bootanimation.zip file to this post
If you can let me know why it isn't working or correct what is wrong I would greatly appreciate it.
I know the resolution is not very good on the PNG files but im just trying to get it to work first and then ill worry about how good it looks
Here are the PNG files im working with
Problem appears to be with your desc.txt. It's not formatted properly. Be sure to use a good text editor (notepad doesn't cut it, try notepad+ if you are on a windows box).
Here is more info that should help you out with the desc.txt
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/9163-desc-txt-boot-animations-works-like.html
Edit: all though there may be something else going on too. Perhaps problem with the format of the images. i just modified desc.txt to appear how it should and put it on my phone and just get a black screen.

In terms of format I downloaded the clip from youtube and changed it into an AVI then I used virtualdub to get the png images from the clip
what type of format for the png is needed?
spotted your problem first they need to be labled as boot_00001 also there needs to be two folders part0 and part1.
I've edited your bootanimation.zip now it is working.
Cool animation but can you make it loop? For me it only plays once.

here u go just needed to change a value in the txt file
Is there any limitations on the number of frames the animation can have?
Im curious in order to make it look better
Not to sure but the highest I've created a bootanimation is 162 images plus 27 for the end loop I think its just a matter of playing with it.
