Hey everyone I haven't got a clue about tablets which is why I'm asking you guys which tablet I should get. I need it mostly for school (ebooks, music, play videos online, etc). Speed isn't my biggest concern but I don't want to go back to Windows Me speeds either . Money is probably my biggest concern and I really don't want to spend a fortune on it mainly because my college funds are draining my money and my soul. Any advice would be appreciated .
If this is the wrong forum for this i apologize.

so you want a honeycomb tablet or ANY tablet in general? is 450e too much? you want a good battery life? screen size 7 or 10 inch? you want future android updates? you want good xda community? tell more and i will answer
wow lol
well honeycomb would be very nice but im assuming price skyrockets w/ it so a general tablet would be perfectly okay one i would prefer to be upgradeable. I would like a good xda community because i'm sure ill try to load something on it and brick it. Battery life isn't a big concern granted it doesn't die out in like an hour. Screen size... 10in would be nice but i wouldn't mind a 7in. As for price I'd like to keep it under 300-400 but as i look up tablets it doesn't sound reasonable lool

well here are 3 tablets that i recommend
dell streak 7
pros: cheap (on amazon 300e) , good xda community, you can get working honeycomb via xda, it has tegra 2 so its powerful (fast), 7 inch screen with gorilla glass
cons: bad battery life (average 3 hours when used), no official updates anymore.
samsung galaxy tab
pros: also pretty cheap (350e on amazon), also good xda community, can get honeycomb via xda, you can make calls with it, also 7 inch screen and gorilla glass, good battery life, 3g.
cons: single core A8 processor (not so fast), no official updates anymore.
asus transformer
pros: genuine 3.0 tablet, will get all coming updates very fast, good community, GREAT screen, 10 inch wit gorilla glass screen, VERY FAST, good built quality, awesome battery life (+9 hours), everything in this device is awesome
cons: expensive (450e (altought its cheap for a 3.0 tablet)), some devices have bad speakers.
so what do you say?
EDIT: and yes i own a transformer, thats why i love it

xoom is not cheap i recommend transformer
Transformer is having tons of problems from what ive heard, the good models are very good, but youre taking a shot buying one. Iconia's are also having problems but not as much. I would recommend those two though. If you dont need SD card or usb or any of that shabang, you can get a galaxy tab 8.9, they are relatively cheap, and have the perfect screen size (8.9" )

really my transformer works great, no speaker issue or any else issues... and i dont recommend samsungs tab (10/8.9) because it has touchwiz skin on top of honeycomb so the updates are going to take ages and as for iconia tab, it has locked bootloader and not so fast updates. asus has very fast updates, good support, much more developement than any of 3.0 tabs and no skin with honeycomb
i gotta say im quite impressed w/ the transformer price but if a lot of them are not working up to par that is quite disappointing. A random question - what's the difference between a tablet pc and a tablet? Is it just the keyboard addition? does the transformer come w/ the keyboard or is that a separate purchase?

dont know whats the difference between those 2 but the transformer is 450e without the dock and 550 with the dock...
Maybe a Advent Vega?
Gotta throw in my 2 cents. I looked and Transformer and Xoom, but didn't like the price. Started hearing about the Advent Vega (Point of View Mobii), and that was my choice. Solid machine, less expensive, etc.
Honeycomb looks great and fast!
Tablet NVIDIA Tegra 250 1GHz Dual Core
Multi-touch LCD 10.1" 1024x600
RAM 512MB + 512MB NAND
WiFi
Bluetooth
GPS
3G slot (on some devices)
USB 2.0, HDMI
1.3Mpix webcamera
microSDHC slot
Pros
Unbrickable (so they say, I've flashed alot of ROM's on it)
Cons
Only 1 gb memory (512 OS, 512 apps) but SD cards up to 32 gb
Viewing angles of the screen
Here is a link to a Vega forum post, watch the video.

The Xoom is crap and way too expensive! Don't even consider it. If money wasn't a problem and you wanted a tablet, I would go with the iPad 2 or Samsung 10.1. Tablet PCs are obviously more expensive than tablets because you're actually buying a computer and not some toy. The best and relatively cheap Tablet PC is the HP TM2T. Keep in mind there are some tablet PCs upwards of 2k. Outside of the iPad, 10.1 and true tablets I wouldn't recommend anything. I think you would just be wasting money.

I would also recommend that you go to your local Best Buy and play with the tabs first hand. I did not too long in order to see HC for myself and really did like it, it is gorgeous. The Moto Xoom felt great in hands, but its screen sucked. It seemed faster than the Iconia A500 which also has the Tegra 2. That was odd. The Iconia had the nicer looking screen. I have had the original iPad and VS Gtab, but believe 7 inches is the way to go. Both 9.7 and 10.1 are IMO too big, but most people seem to disagree. Good luck!

1) I second the Advent Vega recommendation. I am typing on mine now and LOVE it.
2) I just broke the chain.
Which ROM are you using? I love the keyboard with VegaComb 1.6.

Has anybody used new HTC tablet ? any feedback ?
first of all let me just say thank you to all of you - i appreciate ALL the feedback and device suggestions - i went and tried out a lot of the tablets. I have to say the xoom was most disappointing (quite heavy didnt feel right). The Advent Vega is really nice but i had a chance to get the asus eee transformer w/ keyboard at $350 so I jumped it and grabbed it. Thank you all for all your input it was all read and much appreciated

You welcome and that's an AWESOME deal!
Good choice!!!! The Transformer is the obvious choice with the keyboard dock, especially if you plan to use it for school too. As you might have guessed, I have one too for much the same reason.....except school was out for me about 16years ago, however, I wanted something I can enjoy as a tablet but also use for work e.t.c
Once again, good choice!
G'day,
IcedCube here. I have in my possession a Galaxy Tab 7" and for the life of me, I love the little thing (I recently got a ICS Chinese Tab but it's a different kettle of fish. ). I carry it everywhere I go, as it's a beautiful size. Looked at the Galaxy Note, and went "Pfft. So what? My sexy little Galaxy Tab is what I want". And even if it's a little "fat", it feels like a tank. I've dropped from chest height onto a concrete floor by accident and it survived. Not a single scratch or crack in the screen. And it had it's protective OEM cover on it too.
Recently (okay, maybe one or two months ago), I got rid of my Iconia Tab A501 (3G). Kinda feel sorry I did that though, because as soon as I loaded the leaked ICS up on it, I felt the Tegra power. Anyway....
My friend recently got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9" and I was surprised at it's size and performance. So I guess I am a little envious; but whatever. I was wondering if you guys could help me suggest a tablet. I know I can search google myself, but here we go.
My local PC store has a ASUS Transformer TF201 I believe, but not sure if it's 3G or not. It looks pretty nice and that keyboard is awesome - replenishes vital juice while you type. I wish the Iconia had a keyboard for it, because that Dock connector was quite under-used...
Needs to support hardware video decoding. This helps me along boring car trips, I can load up my anime and have the H/W decode the x264 video stream, without my battery life being depleted quickly. I know Tegra video decoding got really good in ICS, but yeah.
Hardware accessories. Optional, but if the tablet has options (like keyboard) or other things that I can buy to add on to it if I wanted to, then that would give it bonus points.
I know how the Tegra 2 was a bit poor in comparison with other tablets, so if it's not nVidia, then I guess it might be interesting. I'll take a look at nVidia tabs too, so I'm not ruling them out.
Bonus points if there's custom ROMs for it. Even more bonus points if there's AOKP or CM9 for it.
On that note, unlocked bootloader. I'm looking at you, Acer.
At least 10" screen, unless the 8.9" screen has a high resolution. My chinese tab runs at 1024x600 and it's a little meh. I miss the 1280x800 screen that the Iconia Tab has. The screen should also be sharp, because I don't like blurry text.
3G Support. Because what's a tablet to me if I don't have WiFi access on the road? I know I can carry around a pocket WiFi hotspot but then you have to recharge it's batteries and all that crap. Also must be GSM since Australia doesn't have CDMA anymore (was killed off in 2005/2006).
At least 8GB or 16GB internal storage. Bonus points if the tablet has microSD slot, so I can slip in an external microSD filled up with my songs, etc.
Decent battery life. Don't want something that will conk out in less than half a day. Do note that I would be using it on the road, so it should be able to survive moderate web browsing use.
Price tag that won't give the wallet a heart attack. If possible, less than $500. I can go over this, but if I can get it under $500 (or even see if anything's up in the XDA marketplace.... now there's an idea...)
Alright. So that's the list. Over to you!
Hi!
I think, that a Acer Iconia A510 would be nice. That is the tablet i buy in the next few days, if it is available in germany.
I hope, that the display and the reaction time is good on it.
The power with a quadcore and enough of RAM in a 1280-panel would be very nice for everything and the price is OK for that.
I tested the Sony Tablet S-Tab and it was very very nice to handle. It was (only) a dualcore, but it was very smooth to surf and use all the apps. But now the hardware is to old and the price to high for that.
Greets from germany
Sony S-Tab, eh? I never heard of that. Sounds rather interesting - I guess I'll add that to the list of "random research" to do.
in the Design Aspect and style its Sony
samsung tablets r surely gaining momentum recently but i dont lik samsung designs and UI. if u hav taste in good designs and UI styles and special unique features i recomment Sony tablets ..they are awesome and iam sure u wil fall in love after evaluating a sony tablet.. just try on..
Sony tablet S is very nice very good.. pricing not much bad.. its worth.. soon getting ICS update.. its really fantastic piece of hardware..
galaxy tabs are rather feels lik boring aftr a while of use.. othr tabs just feels dull and there isnt anything special of its kind.. but i guarantee sony delivers everything u need..its truly of an impressive feel u ever get..

Looked at this. Saw a WiFi-only one, looks pretty interesting. However, when I eBay'd a 3G version, the price tag broke my wallet. Also looked at the Sony P Tab, which has 3G and Dual 5.5" screens (looks like a clamshell). Price tag stung the wallet.
I also took a look at the Iconia Tab A510 model, and it looks like it'll suit the bill. The price tag is still is a bit of an issue, but I guess I can sell my Galaxy Tab on the XDA marketplace to get some cash.
I dont know the size but Asus Padphone?
You thought about the Nexus 7?
...sin you already have the tab. And they worked with Asus on it.

ASUS PadFone: Possible, but looks like it might be out of my league. GSMArena states it's around 610 EUR, which means... according to XE.com... 754.420 Australian Dollar. That's some serious cash right there, and would also mean that it would replace my Galaxy Nexus...
Nexus 7: No 3G version I believe. Gotta have something that does 3G since it's impractical to carry around a modem in my pocket every single place I go.
Galaxy Note also looks like a worthy contender.
I'll probably get flamed but oh well. Get the new iPad. You might not be able to get the 3G version but you should be able to get the wifi model for your budget. If you've got a smart phone then most likely you can tether to it for 3G access providing you have a decent data bundle.
The screen outs any Android tablet. You'll get a better app choice, it's fast and runs extremely smooth.
I've got a Teg 2 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and my iPad destroys it in everything. Ok it doesn't have flash nor will Jelly Bean. No expandable storage, cloud storage fixes that, you can jailbreak it easily and get iFile and get the camera connector kit for a few dollars then you can hook up an SD card for those longer journeys.
It simply is the best tablet I've tried and now I see why it is widely popular. Jailbreaking it opens a ton of useful features.

BTW, OP can also get iPad 2 since hes on a budget.
> new iPad
Ever since I know how the new iPads and such are made and how much effort you have to take into consideration when trying to repair it yourself, I wouldn't even consider one. Plus, I will not support a company that is trying to eliminate Android. Call me crazy, but ever since Android got into my blood, it's been calling my name every time I attempt to walk away from the OS.
I have had an WiFi only iPad in the past, and while it was very nice, I found when I went back to an Android device, I felt refreshed knowing I'm using something loved by the community and I have the freedom to root and install a custom ROM if I feel like it. On iOS, it's locked down and while you can regain root access by jailbreaks, can I download a completely different ROM on the iPad and use that? Nope.
I understand your views and I'm not flaming anyone, I'm just stating that I'm a Droid and I'm not going to let myself be corrupted by Apple. I've had my share of Apple devices in the past (owned 2 iPhone 3G, a MacBook, 2 PowerPC Mac Minis (one of which I still own) and an iPad), and yeah.
More suggestions welcome!
the best size tab I've seen is the 7.7
Tbh I am so annoyed that the nexus isn't a 7.7 ... it just looks too narrow at 7" and i'm contemplating whether to get one or not. 7.7 or Note IMO
Have a look at one, its the best size IMO

I looked at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and i must say, i think that hits the "I'm sold!" Button. The screen looks pretty good and the resolution is a nice 1280x800. 7" normally gives you a 800x480 screen resolution, and that is a little skinny if you hold it upright.
Get any if the ASUS Transformer Pads. You can get an older model that will definitely fit your budget and your needs. The transformer tablets have FAR AND AWAY the best battery life when equipped with the attachable keyboard. I believe it has 3G capability. It has a 1200x800 screen if I remember correctly. It has a Tegra processor depending on the model, and is upgradeable to ICS.
Or just get the LATEST Transformer and go slightly over budget, but it will satisfy all your other needs. (Tegra 3! )

Thanks everyone for your comments. I decided to buy another Iconia Tab (A501), because I have used it in the past and I really liked it. Plus, the recent development with the Patched Bootloader means that I can run another OS on the tab if I wish to. So yeah.

This. I have the iPad 3 and love it, but I honestly wish I never sold my iPad 2. The gains from the screen are not worth the added thickness and weight, shorter battery life, ungodly charging time, and frame rate drops when gaming. Unfortunately now that I have used a tablet with such a high resolution, I couldn't go back to the iPad 2 even if I wanted to. I wish I never saw this screen :/ BTW,This is coming from an Android fan who just preordered the Nexus 7.
Hi guys,
I've got a question! i am considering the note 10.1, but all over the internet the reviews are kinda negative about the gui speed / the screen! (compared to the apple... -.-") i hope you guys can me share your experience with me ! cause i dont always believe the reviews
I was thinking of buying the nexus 7 (but many say its small), tf300 asus and i also heard about the Acer Iconia Tab A700.
But i was really curious about the note 10.1 because the most of my products are always samsung (D8000 tv <3, sgs, 830 ssd<3, etc), i am an engineering student so i thought notes and the math thing would be really cool! quick drawing with the spen!
But after reading through a couple of reviews on the internet there is alot they have to whine about... they say the processor is the best in town but on the other hand the gui and user experience are worse than the tf300. so they said to take the tf300 over the note 10.1 cause the asus got more memory for 90 euro's less.
My greatest concern is the lag they experience in the review, like the old tablets.. but the also say that the processor its not the fault they blame firmware/shell. if that so can we expect updates ? Cause i want the tablet to be smooth!
I hope you guys can share some thoughts !
Thx!

Any review which complains about "lag" on this device is clearly using a pre-production model. I have an i7 laptop and this tablet loads webpages faster than that does.
The only legitimate knock on this tablet is the screen. For the same price you can get a MUCH better screen on the iPad. BUT, with this you get the S-Pen. If you don't care about note taking or drawing by all means get an iPad 3. But if you like the idea of a pen that really works, get this.
I'm also in this predicament .... it hasn't come to Canada but I saw a video on android police....the back casing looks like it isn't on right or something......bounces.....is that the case?

Thx btw for the links they help alot!
You're an engineering student ? How could You do WITHOUT the SGN 10.1 ?
Even I as a teaching surgeon only wonder after 1 week of having this ultimate device how I have lived without it ? ( well, I had my SGNote).
It's not the device by it it's tech specs alone but the entire concept and interface and 10000000% usabillity in every second of one' s life
And that's only the beginning. It's running now for 2 weeks on the market and the US update already improved the usability significantly ( see posts)
I know of 3 10.1s in my sourrounding, one is my wife and her working profile is completely different to mine but every day she says: how did I live with this crappy iPad-**** up to now using a Pad /Tab device approx. 6-7 hours per day.
At no second there was the slightest lag or crash and I use it to the possible limits ( well there IS a lag: but only when my providers radio-mast is too far away or 3G Radio channels are cramped :crying:
Id recommend this device. its nothing like the negative reviews portray. solid built device. its the most powerful tablet on the market today. it has a great 720P Hd display. true stereo speakers that can't be matched by any device. whether in clarity or loudness. Ics version of android thats put together very well. great battery life. S pen feature that integrates seamlessly into the Os. even if you font use pen, this device is great based on speCs and software alone.
Ill even say those negative reviews arent representative of this device at all. for an engineering student or any student, this is a great choice.
Based on my experience with it so far, it gets my stamp of approval. The infinity a good choice also but I saw you say price of it plus dock is more than youbwant to spend. go with the note 10.1 you wont be disappointed with how fast n fluid it performs plus the usefulness of the s pen.
Let me put it this way. One review i read decided that the SGN10.1 was fail because they took a poll that said most tablet users didnt think a person looked "cool" using a stylus. Lol, who the hell cares if i look cool or not if i have a better tool to work with?
Anyway the critics all slammed the Note as well and it went on to be a monster seller.

Hey guys I'm going to sell my tablet not because i don't like it did because I bought a Mac Book Pro . I can't justify having 2 really expensive Mobile items . I was thinking of just selling in getting a Nexus 7 but I know I'm going to miss the screen a lot on with the new iPod mini out the decision is harder . I'm looking for 7 to 10 inch solution that let's me write documents on the go ahead and transfer in the cloud . Watching netflix on the tablet has been my favorite part but I just can't keep a 500 dollar movie player
I dont understand. Why sell the infinity, and then ask for suggestions for a 7 to 10" tablet?
Sold it?
How much you expect you can get?
450 for a used tablet?
and then buy a Nexus 7?
lol?
well, if you buy it within 30 days, then get a full refund.
I don't even like to bring a mac book pro to school as it is still too bulky and heavy

I agree: it doesn't make sense. I wonder why did you make the decision to buy a Mac Book before asking the question. You are eating your dessert first, mate! Well, IMHO, you already made the decision - when you decided to buy the Mac Book; you just feel the need for some confimation.
However, to answer your question: I wouldn't change my Infinity for a Nexus/mini Tampax/Samsung. I would miss too much the screen and the joy it gives me when using it - like, right now, when I'm responding. If I'd need a 7" gadget, I'd wait until Asus brings out Nexus 7+ (or whatever they'll call it) with a Super IPS+ screen that would be readable outdoors, in direct sunlight. And would have a microSD card slot. I am not used to downgrading quality. Your mileage definitely varies!
Hang on. Let me get this straight:
You can't justify a 500 dollar tablet...
But you buy a 1200 dollar Apple that has the exact same specs as a 250-350 dollar regular laptop?
I'm not seeing the logic here.
What you're going to get back for your Infinity will be about the amount you're going to have to pay for a new 7/10". So why bother selling?
Not catching the logic here myself.
Maybe what your saying is just worded strangely.
I'm pretty sure you won't be recouping a lot from selling the tablet.
The price on them is declining as of late.
I'm curious also as to why you didn't opt for an iPad3 instead of a Macbook?
iTons has a lot of sketch or handwriting apps that work pretty nice.
I would sell my TF700T plus dock in a heartbeat for a new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from Verizon. I have a Galaxy Not e 10.1 tablet and it works just fine. I don' t think I'd miss the Infinity at all!
idk if you guys like your infinities or not but mine SUCKS. screen bleed huge lags i really want to get out of it and either buy a nexus 10 or the new ipad 4. why because my mac is too heavy. i feel bad that i bought a mac but its a long story and i want to sell my tablet okay ? i cant return the mac it was at one ofthose college stores on campus ( a campus im never going back to ). so im stuck with it ! already tried at the apple store in my town they wont take back 3rd party stuff. anyway
iipad mini. its the most portable tablet but its underspecced like hell. wait for a nexus 7 +, a micro soft surface or and ipad 4. those are the top tablets right now. and i want to get the best one for portability. what would you guys chose ? the ipad would intergrate with my mac a lot , but the surface has a keyboard already with it and a micro sd card which is really important. a nexus 10 would integrate well with the android apps i already have plus im planning on selling my htx one x for a nexus 4. my head hurts from all this maybe i should take a break from buying unecessary **** man
So I'm looking for a 10 inch tablet that i can use for college. In my location right now, ipad 2 and the tab 2 10.1" have similar price. I know that the ipad 2 is outdated but i heard the applications available for these purposes are better than those in android. which one is better?

Mate, are you serious?? Just joking
Imho Android is the best, because it is an almost free system.
But in the end it is your decision.
So think about what you want to do with it.
Regards
Ps.: Update politics are much better at Apple
See my post here.
Similar principles apply here. Make up your own mind, it is the only way you will be happy in the end...
i will not tell you which is better because that is subjective. I have a buddy that is an Apple fanboy and praises everything that Apple makes. I on the other hand am pretty loyal to Android. I have had both the iPad 2 and currently have a Galaxy tab 2 10.1 I do like the GT2 10.1 better but there are positives and negatives to both devices. Ipads are chained to itunes(which I cant stand personally). ipads can be jailbroken for more customization, but no where near as customizable as the GT2, even with the ipad jailbroken and the GT2 stock. the big plus to the ipad is the accessory market. There are a TON of accessories for the ipad. it is harder to find accessories for the GT2, especially when it comes to video out. You would probably be happy with either device, i suggest maybe finding someone that owns each or going to a store and play with both of them and see which one you like the feel of.
I hope this helps you at least a little.
The galaxy tab 2 for me is the best, I love it!

I know how open android is. I've had a samsung S2 for 2 years now and I've tried countless number of roms and tweaks. But I'll be selling my S2 when I get my tablet.
But I'm not talking about the os itself. I'm talking about the usability of the device for use for college. As in the softwares available specifically for these uses.
In my country i bought my Tab 2 10.1 for 254€, the ipad2 its still 400€, so there's a big difference, and even if there wasn't i don't like the apple policies, i like to do with my device what i want, not what a company want me to do.

vihat software are you wanting to use? there are apps for both that allow viewing word docs and pdf files. i guess if you are wanting to inquire about specific software, no one can answer your question but you. get on your pc and search itunes and the google play store and see which one has what you are looking for. chances are they both will.

Hi,
My wife has an Ipad2 and I've bought the Tab2 so I've used both.
There are pros and cons to both:
Quality: (feel and smoothness of operation) the Ipad2 feels slighty quicker when scrolling the screen and has a slightly better screen but the camera on the back is absolutely crap, the tab2 camera blows it away and it's only 3M.
Customization: un jailbroken the Ipad2 stays stock with little customization possible, no widgets of different sizes, no live wallpaper whereas the Tab2 lets you make many many customizations.
Media: the Ipad has no SD card whereas the tab2 has a uSD card slot, I transfer my music, ebooks and videos from my PC to the SD card in whatever format I like, no need to convert through Itunes. ( the main reason why I won't be getting a nexus phone or tablet, no SD card !!!)
Security: I feel that the locked down OS of the Ipad gives you more security for non technical people to use and also the parental controls are pretty good, the Tab2 is also pretty secure compared to a PC but not a secure as IOS. (my feeling)
Cost: I just bought a Tab2 for £180 after the cash back from samsung and the Ipad2 is still at £329 so there is really no competition in my mind, it's a no brainer .... The Samsung Tab2 10.1 is the better buy.
I go to university and I just bought the GT2. For me it works perfect but I dont know how iOS excactly is and wich apps are avaible.
I have to work a lot with PDFs at my school and Acrobat Reader for Android is awesome. I upload all my PDFs into a Cloud from Adobe. With my GT2 I can download all these Documents when ever I want. I can also add notes to it. You can do even more notes, lines, drawings than you can do with your Windows Computer.
For me the GT2 is perfect.
I was an iPad 2 owner until last week. I got kind of bored with it even though I was jaiobroken, it's just not as customisable as Android.
I also had problems with iTunes taking payments twice every time I made an in app purchase. I had a lot of hassle with them over it. They blamed my bank but it was nothing to do with my bank. In the end I had to cancel my bank card and delete all payment information from my iTunes account.
They did refund one of the duplicate payments but then took it back again the next day.
I sold the iPad and got the tab 2 10.1. I like it alot but if I had more money, would have gone for the Note 10.1 instead. I could have waited but didn't trust myself not to dip into the money I already had. Lol.
It's personal choice as to what is best for you but if you like something you can really make your own, I would go with Android.
