Good day everyone,
Have a couple of questions to ask , some might sound idiotic, please go easy on me as am still in middle school and new to this.
So i really like anything related to programming and development, but lately am interested in mobile development.
My question is, i have a motorola razr xt910 , which i downloaded whatspp on it, now what i want to do is be able to modify things in it , but i know it needs to be an open source and ive been searching on google if it is, but i cant find an answer.
Lets say its modifiable , can i modify it to my personal needs? if so what things do i need? i know i need the android sdk , but anything else?
Thanks a bunch for your help

This is actually the wrong form for this. This is for the xt926 and xt925.
Anyway, Im 99% sure whatspp is closed source, however, you can still make modifications to it.
I recommend using Linux for anything Android. You will save a bunch of time not dicking around with drivers. There are also tons of tools to make things easier and they are mostly all free.
You will need the Android SDK, APKTOOL and the drivers for your phone if you decide to stick with Windowz. There are plenty of write-ups on how to install these tools. Actually I never found a good guide for installing APKTOOL, essentially what you need to do is place the files you download for it in the platform tools folder in the Android SDK. If you setup the SDK correctly you should be able to access APKTOOL from anywhere you can access adb.
If all you plan on doing is modifying xmls and images life will be easy, if you want to add functions and dont know java life will be hard. Actually even if you do know java life will still be hard according to some.
Just download whatsapp + you will get what you need.. Google it

So I've been playing around with Eclipse, running Android on my pc, just for fun, not really a developer, and I have managed to get quite a few apps installed, and when I re-launch the device, the apps are still installed and all.
The platforms that come with the sdk are very stripped down, so I just used the email app that's included with the platform builds to email myself .apk's, and was able to get a decent looking/functioning build going.
My question now is, if its reasonably convenient for you to do, could someone please drop me some links to some pretty tricked out system.img's so that I can copy the sdk's 2.2 platform folder and drop in the new system.img?
I'm wanting to make a pretty cool build that I can run on my comp
I have been having trouble finding just regulare system.img's, all I keep coming up with is system.ext2's and they don't seem to work with the sdk.
I don't know for sure 100% that what I am wanting to do can even be done, since I've so far not been able to find any plain ol' system.img's, so if anyone has any advice at all about how to go about what I'm wanting to do, I'm all ears.
Like I said, not a developer, just doin something I think is pretty neat to play around with on my pc
Just looking for a system.img with more of the basic crap already installed, maybe some cool eye candy, idk
thanks for any help all
Hi everyone, For the last two weeks I have been trying to develop my own custom Gingerbread + custom view sonic kernel.
Today I finally have them packaged into a update.zip file but it wont install due to status 6. Sadly I really have no clue if thats the last part I need to over come before I can install, or perhaps there is more than just that issue since the only tutorial I could find were dated / incorrect / incomplete / or written by someone who ate pain chips as a child.
So Really all I want is Gingerbread with com.android.future.usb.Accessory / Manager
AND (this is important also)
I also need the Viewsonic kernel to support the Prolific driver 2303 (this is in the menuconfig so it should be easy to add).
In addition, if anyone could please point me to resources when I can accurately learn how to build the OS / Kernel / update.zip file that would be wonderful. My head hurts so badly from reading all these broken english posts where the scrip examples are riddled with typos.
Oh also two weeks ago was the first time I ever saw Ubuntu (thats what im currently working on as well).
Thank you and sorry for the aggravated post but I seriously need help, my job is in the balance. Thanks Again
Anyone know of a rom that has these features already in them? Or perhaps a good couple of tutorials that will allow me to create my own? I dont want anything fancy just plain vanilla.

this is the thread i used to get me started compiling a module for pershoots kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916198
obviously run your own menuconfig somewhere in there (i think its in one of the steps) and turn on whatever you want. Also save the modules that you create as the default pershoot ones wont insert into your custom module at that point
[edit] there is a thread in the gtablet devel section for pershoots latest (i think 2.6.32.42) that may have this already: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903505 [/edit]
Thanks for the links. I was able to pull the config file from Ginger 2.3.4 and it seems to have the required driver for the prolific usb to serial converter, although when I write a usb detection program and attempt to load it onto the tablet, well I get a missing shared library com.android.future.usb.
So now thats kind of odd because its 2.3.4 and Google specifically says it supports the library I need. So I guess what Im asking is there any Ginger or even honeycomb OS for the Gtablet that supports this?
Once again Thanks for a point in the correct direction.
Is there anyone I can communicate with directly in creating this? Ill be more than willing to donate my work so that it could be built upon. I just can not believe that this has not been added in yet.
Ive pushed android.hardware.usb.accessory.xml to /etc/permissions
and ive pushed the com.android.future.usb.accessory.jar to /system.framework
This seems to do absolutely nothing. Does anyone have a version with the USB accessory working for the G tablet? Or could anyone Communicate with me directly perhaps by IM? Thank you very much again.
So after some tweeking I can now get my program that requires com.android.future.usb.accessory although thats all it does. It wont detect the USB or use any USB features. Im sure im programing it wrong, although It detects USB drives and keyboards and such it will not detect my USB to serial Prolific cable.
Im trying to compile the kernel and install it but really, nothing works... Im typing commands I dont know what they mean, and i get responses like "Permission denied" so I use sudo on the command and get "not a valid command". So I didnt have permission at first, then once I did it wasnt a valid command? No wonder why ****ty old windows stomped ubuntu into the ground... I feel windows phone will destroy google if its this hard to develop a single app that I have on the IPHONE / WINDOWS PHONE / WINDOWS 7 but cant get it on android... WTF
Im just wondering how you successfully compile Gingerbread 2.3.4 and Leave out part of the MAJOR update. Why not just use 2.3.3?
Anyway Ive personally fixed that, although when i pull the kernel it shows the prolific driver is installed but there is no detection when I plug the cable in.. Nothing nadda. just like the replies to this post. Im guessing people dont have any problems at all with all the really bad tutorials out there and the lack of support even on this, a developer site, I cant even ask questions to the developers because I dont even have 10 posts yet. Also it just seems like the only thing people on this site is Over Clocking. It done matter if its a peice of ****, as long as its over clocked, Or some of the roms I installed and they are SO bad, but man they are over clocked... Or the roms that say they are 2.3.4 and happen to be 2.3.3. Or the ones that just wont install. How has android made it this far, its actually pretty bad, but then again im sure Im the only human with these problems, because I really cant find anything on the Internet after a good long while. I tough myself enough law to win a law suit against a company with high priced lawyers in less time than this is taking... And im no good at law at all.

i made it in flash obviously BUT i've made the size available for a phone but i was going to use eclipse to put it in form but I'm kind of lost since the as2 isn't working even in flash just as a flash.
What i want to know is why is there no errors and why it wont work, how i can make it work and put it into a mobile app.
It holds pictures that should zoom in and out of and videos.
I'm not so sure about using eclipse since I'm thinking of trying to practice using corona too!
I'm new to making android apps but I'm making this app for a group of people who are trying to get a movie that should come out anytime now.
It's going to have fan made trailers in it with the people who created them credited for it,a photo gallery and then you can choose any of the photos for a background for your android phone.
sound good?
I just want to know why it won't play because it should play because i don't have any errors because i checked over all the as2 scripts..
Also I'm not sure how I'm going to get flash working on eclipse if i do use eclipse since I know its possible to use eclipse.
But this is my very first app and I'm surprised I've gotten this far.
P.s. sorry if this is a dumb question I'm just kind of lost and confused right now and a bit of a newbie at this still!
I tried to post this in another category on the android phone board too but it wouldn't let me sorry if this is the wrong forum board for this question.
I want to get into writing android apps but do not have a PC, only a Transfomer original TF101.
Are there any coding apps out there that I can use instead of the SDK / emulators that you use on PC?
I dont mean an app to create/write the code for me, simply an app that allows me to create all the files and write the code needed myself but on the TF instead of on the PC.
Many thanks!!!
Yes............
You could try JavaIDEdroid: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.t_arn.JavaIDEdroid
I do development work on a laptop, and I hate it. Fed up scrolling and tabbing about just to look at a line of code. I recommend a desktop with a decent widescreen. Or maybe hook up that hdmi cable....

Believe me I tried searching (alot!!) both on XDA and google and really struggled to find them. I guess the search terms are very general so it was hard to hone in.
I'll try that app suggested above, do you guys (or anyone else) have any other suggestions to look at, or can point me to a thread on XDA which has this kind of info in it?

I've never seen any threads on this topic, but would love to find out more.
Care to point us in the right direction?
Tapatalk sucks for searching, be it my posts or the forums in general. Most stuff I have is in Simplenote or my blog, and probably all but setup notes posted on XDA.
The general case: either you use something that doesn't work exactly like the SDK (i.e. Terminal IDE from the Market), or you setup an environment you can run the necessary tools in. I have a Debian stable chroot on my device with JDK, Ant, and Android SDK setup, the only problem is a few programs like render-script support, the emulator, and maybe one core program for doing the usual ant builds (aapt I think).
So you can use the Android SDK almost perfectly fine on device, only thing is you can't make an APK or use the ant build without compiling something from the SDK yourself (and I don't know where the source is, and ASOP is a big ass thing to download now just to run grep). All the pure "Java" parts work and you can run natively by using a real JDK on your device. The Android SDK is like 90-95% pure Java code and doesn't need a GUI to function if you can live that way.
Other wise you're limited to doing things the harder way than just here's the code, make APK and go clickly in a file manager.
You can even make regular Java code that will run on Android+davlik, as long as you don't use things missing from the Android API (like Swing) and know enough about how .java becomes .apk to put it in Dalvik format.
I don't know if Eclipse and the ADT work differently or not, so I have not tried them on device. Yes, you probably could use Eclipse on device if you do the Xvnc+a VNC client but ahem, I don't even like running Eclipse on a hell of a lot more powerful hardware. With a bit of tweaking to use the right SWT, the SDK manager could run its GUI the same way but that's more bother (to me) than using a little command line fu.
For editing code either an Android app or a Linux app can be used. I use vim because I have used it since like '05. Some might prefer e.g. Touchqode.
Something like Terminal IDE is probably best for people that don't understand things but you can't do a "Regular" build like with the Android SDK on a PC.
Oh, and btw if anyone knows where I can find the source for the Android SDK, let me know because I want to get it compiled for my tablet .

Hi all, haven't been here since Windows Mobile 6x :silly: You were all great support back then, maybe you can help me with this.
I have an Alcatel A30 Fierce. I wanna know what my options are in terms of going "off android" and onto an entirely different OS. I still use Steepshot, KHUX and LINE, so I still need apk support... but then again I've never used an alternative, perhaps most still offer apk support? Big thing would be de-googling. I'm not sure if the OSes I'm about to mention are still heavily tied to google or are a kind of breakaway from it. I am doing this as a type of experiment for myself, to see how often I can avoid the big G whenever possible (if not, that's fine, at least I tried).
-First up is Sailfish OS. Not sure if this will be compatible with my device. I could only find the X version, which is specific to Xperia devices, don't see anything else out there, unless custom roms exist here on the forum or other's sites?
-Next up was Plasma Mobile. Can't seem to get specifics on it, seems I have to ask in a forum like this to get more useful info.
-Lastly there's Lineage. Do you know if it has the ability to cut presidential alerts (grayed out on current android). Also to simply side-load APKs and keep the appstore and other Gapps off the device (along with those automatically google opt-ins that you have to dig around to disable)? Please don't ask "why" I just want to see if this can be done.
Thanks for your time!!!
EDIT: If this can't be done, please recommend the "cheapest" phone that can do Sailfish, I will probably buy it and do that.
