Wireless Charging Comparison (Verzion vs Samsung) - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

So I purchased both the white Samsung Wireless charger and the black Verizon charger. My thoughts:
I'm upset that they both only charge at 640. This is HALF what a normal USB charges at. Also, the Samsung uses a standard Micro USB as power supply, while the Veirzion has a special adapter (annoying). Also, the Samsung is more sensitive where the device is placed on the pad, has to be directly in one spot or it won't charge. The Verizion has a much larger charging area.
So my question is -
1) Are all wireless charging bases only charging at 640?
2) is there a better charger that used micro USB?
Thanks,

Normal USB 2.0 charges at around 500Mah. Some special ports offer more power.
The stock Samsung wall charger, can output UP TO 2amps
My wireless charging receiver, a generic eBay one claims up to 1amp, and i usually get between 400 and 800 depending on what im doing.
The base itself, I think sends only up to 1amp, so the real limitation is in the receiver in the phone.
Second part of your question, are you asking about the charging plate?
In terms of what charger plate to get, Is the standard micro USB plug so important to you ?
there are some pretty handy ones, such as the Panasonic QE-TM101 that offer a feature where you can place the phone anywhere on the pad and the charge will start.
I cant comment on the Verizon one because im not from america

Yeah, I'd like to get a pad that used the standard Micro USB.
Thanks for the advice!

I have been looking for the same answer you are, I bought a off brand wireless charger off eBay and that charges at 640 as well. So I'm guessing it's the norm right now unless I'm wrong.
But I really wanted a wireless charger for bedside so even if it's slow I'm okay with it so far.

That's expected. 640 is max rate wirelessly. I don't have the Verizon pad, but have several of the Samsung ones (thanks to the 50% off coupons) and none are sensitive to where you place the phone.

alternative to the hp charging cable

I lost my wall charger that came with my HP touchpad. The round plug thingie is what I'm looking for. Searching on Amazon brings up a number of items, for example:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-North-American-Charger-TouchPad/dp/B0055QYJJM/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_3
However, is there an alternative that works? I was able to use the Evo cable rather than the original HP sync/charge cable that came with the wall charger, but is there an alternative wall plug that works as well? Paying almost $28 for a charging cable seems a bit ridiculous.
Any help and advice would be most appreciated.
[[FOUND MY ANSWER]]
I found that Walmart was having a sale on the North American charger with the barrel wall connector for $11.99 and Meritline was having a sale for 6' long USB to micro-usb cables (pair for $4.99 no tax/shipping).
The listing on the Meritline page says that the cables are compatible with the Evo.
Given that the cable that comes with the HP barrel charger is pretty much monkey spit and fails within a month, I found a solution that works for less than $20.
Links are below:

Meritline Cables (use this code MLCK222YNL1 for discount (cannot guarantee how long this code is good for, drops the price for a twin pack of the 6' cables from $10.99 to $4.99)

Pretty much any USB charger will work, but most give a notification on the Touchpad screen indicating that they may not be charging. This is because the official charger is at the high end of both voltage and current capability. I charge from laptop, desktop and a variety of Blackberry chargers with no issue, but the available current will determine how long it takes to charge and whether it charges much while the screen is on. Go for a USB charger that gives you 2 Amps and you should be fine.

Thank you for the advice. To be more specific, can you recommend any alternative charging cables/wall charger units specifically?
Any brand name USB charger that gives off 2 amps should be fine. I tend to stay away from really cheap generic chargers. Any microUSB cable should be fine even a generic one if it has decent reviews. I worry about generic chargers since a poorly regulated one could send a voltage too high, but generic cables should be fine.
The chargers I am currently using, as well as the one that came with the TP, are the one that came with a Blackberry Playbook and the one from my HTC Desire HD.
The Blackberry charger gives an error on the screen that it may not charge the TP, but as it gives 2 amps, charges in pretty much the same time as the official unit.
The HTC again gives the warning and takes about twice as long to charge.
what about the nook color charger i know it higher amps might work as well

I just tested the TP with a charger for the NC, and unfortunately, it still gives the same "may not charge" warning...
There is NO after market charger that will charge at full rate like the HP barrel charger!
At best they will trickle charge at a much lower rate and take considerably longer to charge.
The TP relies on precise signaling which it will only get from the OEM item or specially modded after market units or cables.
Do a google for further info ie webosnation.com forums.
I think your looking for a 5.1v charger, aka rapid charger. This is used by the iPad, and some android phones like the Motorola droid 3, razr and htc rezound.
I could be wrong though,I haven't gotten my touchpad yet.but I do own all said device above (except the razr) and they all use the faster charging technology.

Don't believe all the hype about using ONLY the HP charger, there are many that do the job perfectly well. Too many people make these authoritarian statements and all they do is cause FUD.
At my office, I use the AC charger from my last Samsung phone (mythic) and it works IDENTICALLY to the OEM one. I have also used a Moto and and LG with NO PROBLEMS. I have no issues getting to fully charged in little time.
At home, my OEM cable is plugged into a high-power USB port (2.1A, I believe) and it has no problem charging from near zero to full as well. Front or top-mounted USB ports tend to be 500mA or less, but the rear ones (coming directly off the motherboard) tend to have a higher supply. I also use a non-HP USB cable occasionally and it works fine.
(I got my TP during the original fire-sale and have been charging it these ways ever since with ZERO ISSUES.)

The small voltage difference is marginal and isn't going to matter, the internal hardware should be able to tolerate a few tenths of a volt difference. In fact, I tested my Motorola charger rated at 5.1v and the Touchpad charger rated at 5.2v on a multimeter. The Motorola charger was outputting 5.20v and the Touchpad charger 5.16v. Granted this is at no load, but switching transformers are regulated so they should supply rated voltage at any current draw equal to or less than rated. Also depending on how well the voltage is regulated there may still be a slight AC ripple that the device has to deal with.
Does anyone know the time difference between using the TP charger and a standard droid/blackberry charger? Also curious if the charges last the same. I know theoretically they should since the battery is full either way, but electricals can be tricksiy..

Its all down to the charge rate that the TP is able to draw.
2A which is theoretically possible from TP AC barrel charger would charge the 6A+ battery of the TP from flat to full in approximately 6.5 hours.
If the BB charger were able to have 500mA drawn by the TP then it would fully charge in approximately 26 hours.
The charges would be no different.
To convert any regular USB charger into a TouchPad charger you need to add 2 resistors as per the diagram attached.
The presence of the resistors will trigger the TouchPad to draw the full 2A from the charger rather than the trickle charge it does when they are not there.
Please do not modify a cheap charger that is only rated for 500mA as you will most likely overheat it and it could present a fire risk.

Just pointing out that you need to start with a charger that is rated at least 2Ah to start with.
You can't turn a low rated one into a high rated one.

oh, for the love of gods. REALLY? I was just asking for a replacement cable. I don't want to reinvent the charging paradigm. I just need a simple recommendation for a cable. If a thread could be highjacked any further I don't know how it could be.
I appreciate all your "advice" but seriously, this is NOT what I was asking.
Anyone know if I can get a similar cable in the UK? Kind of lost my TP cable, and I miss the flexibility the long cable gave me, it was so much easier to use on charge!
well i know that my tbolt cable works. i have to use the tp adapter though. my tbolt adapter makes the touchpad say that the charger is incompatible.

You dont have to have a modded cable if your car charger already has the data pins shorted. Im using the motorola rapid charger too and it works fine, it will charge your phone as AC and give enough power to recharge the battery with navigation on. if you want something a bit better you can try this one , they ship to canada. My rapid charger broke so i bought it a few days ago. Reviews says the trident will give around 8-900mA, the moto charger outputs around 6-700mA.
I would only buy a premium brand here. If you see how no name mains adaptors are made... the risk of blowing up something expensive is just too big.
I wnent with the Sony AN-400 / 401, because it is rated at 1.2 amps exactly, is small, and was reported to work fine.
For some regulator disasters:
http://hackaday.com/2012/08/15/buying-cheaper-electronics-and-not-saving-money/ <- a USB car charger without components, putting 12 volts straight on USB.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi-b9k-0KfE <- teardown of imitation apple mains adapter, showing no output protection and very little gap between mains voltage and output circuit. Good info, but style of presentation is not my cup of tea.
So that is why I went with a premium brand.
that's one charger from one factory that some guy that didnt know what he was doing and ordered thousands, without testing them. He probably went for the 25 cent super deluxe model...
Well reviewed chargers from xda members here and not to mention the hundreds of people on amazon are a safe bet. Here's a 8+page thread on the charger i linked. Your premium brand name sony charger is made in china too.

If you're into rooting and custom kernels, most of them have a fastcharge option where you don't need to have a special usb cable, or, attempt to short the D- and D+ lines.
Monoprice has a 2.1A bullet charger for a bit cheaper:

There are some other brands that are good too but i like this one cause it's dual usb like my old moto rapid charger. If you dont need that you can get some smaller ones that will work just make sure they are well review and can output around 1A. The one that bfspider spider recommends is a good bet too since monoprice is pretty reputable store and will ship to canada.

You can try to mod this one in the mean time, just take it apart and attach the two data pins(they are the two middle ones). Solder is best but if you cant you can just use pilers and bend the pins until they touch. i did this with a few of my chargers too and it works to make them AC but it wont increase the output if its low to begin with.

FYI, this adapter should allow most existing "iPad" chargers (1.2A or higher) + any USB cable to work well with the Nexus 4.
The problem is that Apple products deviate from USB charging standards. As a result, most chargers try to be compatible with iDevices and also deviate from the standards. So when standard-compliant devices try to follow the standards, the chargers refuse to follow the standards, and the devices get upset with each other. Fortunately, they fall back and settle on a lower-power charging rate.
If you want to buy chargers that are very clear on what they support, check out MediaBridge (also available on Amazon).

The generic T-Mobile car charger available at T-Mobile stores charges just fine. I believe it is at least 1 amp. Its black, has a purple white small led indicator when charging. The USB end looks like a little block and the cord is an accordion type and it also has a a female USB slot in it to plug something else in at the same time but I believe whatever USB cord you plug in there only charges at .5 amp. With this charger I can run navigation and Bluetooth and Pandora and message at the same time and it will charge.

Don't waste your money buying them from samsung. All usb cables are the same, just find a cheap one on amazon or monoprice. You could just look at pictures and find one that looks small enough to fit your case.
Edit- well I guess this is wrong. I've bought a few couple cheap usb cables and never had a problem but other people have.

I used to think the same thing, but this is absolutely not true. You can download the app Galaxy Charging Current and compare your charging rates with different cables. If you don't believe the app, you can start from a specific charge level and time the charge with the screen off and no apps running. There can be a significant difference. There are several posts throughout the GS4 forums if you search for the app name.
This isn't only true for the GS4 either. I tried using a USB 2.0 extension cable I bought in 03 or 04 to extend my Palm Pre touchstone, but the phone wouldn't consistently charge with the extension in place.
How's the charging speed on those? I know some cheaper cables don't charge as quickly.

NOT all cables are the same!
The included one with the phone allows charging up to 1900mA. The one from the S3 (for example) will only charge up to 960. I have some that won't go over 460.

So is it the cable that is affecting the charging current, or is it just the charger itself?

Both.
What is strange to me the phone with that app reports it's getting 1900mA when I use an old HTC charger capable of 1A (1000mA) @ 5V when using the OEM USB cable. Either that HTC charger's specs were grossly understated or the phone itself tries to sense electrical properties of the USB cable? Not sure if that last bit is even possible.
Anyone with knowledge on how the phone determines how much current to draw on a lower level? Kinda curious.
Also, there are sellers on eBay for the original S4 charging cable for something like $7, or same charging cable and 2A wall adapter for $10.
See for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230980370756
The part number they list (ETA-U90JWE) is the same as my OEM charger, that can do 2A @ 5 V.

Also looking for a 1900mA charger/usb chord combo. Found 2 "OEM" fakes on Amazon (reviews reported fake), and can't just buy, and hope for the best on eBay. Looking to see if someone has bought, tried, and tested a charger/chord combo that does 1900mA from a reliable source. I'm not paying $40+ for a charger/usb chord from samsung. There's got to be an alternative.
Newegg.com sells them.
I've ordered this charger + cable (aware of the risk of fake, will be comparing to my included/OEM), this micro USB cable, and this micro USB cable.
Also waiting on this car charger.
Using Battery Monitor Widget app to get mA readings during charge.
Will report back with results as I receive and test.
I bought this, since my S4 came with the european one, this is 100% original (Same that comes with the S4 and Note 2):

Bought that one from seller1on1. Came in today. Cable is shorter than OEM but has the same current
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
FYI regarding my post above, I've started a separate thread since this one has gone a bit off-topic. Sorry OP!

I got the Getwow fast charger from Amazon. So far, it works as it should. I have not experienced any problems. It was 15.99. FYI, Getwow also has a car charger version.
I got a Puregear as a spare. works just fine
Saw the other day. Shop, Android central had the samsung oem. Which is odd bc samsung last I thought didn't have then in their website to sell.
I have a Tenergy fast charger and a Power Partners Fast Charger. Both work as good and even better than the OEM Samsung charger. I got them on Amazon and they were about $20 - $25. The Power Partners charger comes with a 20 awg usb cord but it's 3 feet. They recommend using the provided cord for the best results. The specs are insane though. 5V-4A, 9V-2.22A, 12V-2.5A, or 20V-1A. I have tested it on several devices and they charge twice to three times faster (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 especially) and I haven't had any issues with heat and/or battery life nor faster battery depletion. The Tenergy is 5V-2A, 9V-2A, or 12V-1.5A and works perfect as well. The only thing about the Power Partners which hasn't been an issue just very.......different is that is has a pretty high pitched current noise. It's like a whistling noise when charging but it is cooler to the touch than the OEM Samsung and Tenergy chargers.
got my tenergy charger on friday, works wonderful
I ordered the Getwow home and car charger set from Amazon and it doesn't work. Still trying to find a good backup as well..
have the getwow unit and verified AC charger works. are you using the getwow or samsung cable. you need to use a data cable(just in case you weren't aware) and not a charge cable.

I'm using the cable they provided. Tried both cables they sent, nothing. Used the cables in my laptop and Xbox One and the phone charged.
This one from Verizon is the best one out there and I've tried them all.
I did buy the getwow ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q6H51F0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) since having two ports was a great idea (one QC plus one 2.1A port). The first 2 didn't work and the replacement 2 are working well.
One more thing: it is not QC certified (not listed on QC's website)

I didn't know the base plug lit up too, I thought it was just the micro usb cable end. I wanted to get that originally, but it was too expensive for me.

Get a replacement. You might have a defective unit. My Getwow works well with my Note 4.

And you can see this light from across the whole house and the red ring of light goes out when the phone is completely charged.
Great Charger, I don't even use the stock Samsung one anymore.

is this charger fake?

Pics attached. I have read on the site below that if its made in vietnam that its fake, is this true?
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/blog/2016/05/how-to-spot-a-fake-samsung-fast-adaptive-charger/
When hooked up to ampere it charges at just over 1 amp.
The S7 (as far as WIRED chargers go) uses the same charger as every other Samsung S series phone (which is the same charger that OTHER Samsung smartphones use back to the S3 - and the Nexus, for that matter); it's why when I got gifted the S7, I did not have to use a different charger, charger cable, etc. I had two J3 chargers (one I had been using with my GNex - the other was, in fact, a spare) - so now I have them separated. Where the S7 gets different is the support for wireless (not wired) charging; however, I don't use wireless charging at all (therefore, the difference is, in fact, irrelevant).
One OTHER use for my gifted S7 so far (since I am not using it as a phone) is with the rather slick app called DroidCam (which lets you use an Android device's camera as a webcam) - in fact, the S7's rear shooter is one of the nicest cameras for this (if you are also using the phone's tethering feature, it's even more sensible that you use it as a webcam). The only minus is that you can't use the UWP version of Skype - you must use the desktop version. If you have the S7, you can also use the 5GHz band to connect your camera to Skype - even if you don't have a wi-fi adapter in your connected PC (I use a wired gigabit connection with Skype desktop).6 A s66hame I can't use it with other Windows-based camera applications.
I'm not sure what the previous reply blabbered about, but as an actual response to your question, I have to say yes, that abomination of a British socket wall plug charger is genuine Samsung. Just make sure the output corresponds with your phone for a healthy long life.
Cant say by just looking at it but you could plug it in your phone and donwload amper check the Amperage if its low then defo a fake one if not congratulations

i sent all three of them back in the end, however i did check with amperage and it was charging my phone at just over l000 mah. What should it be charging at?
1000 is not bad . Fake chargers dont even get to 500. You should get 1000 to 1600 i believe.

If the charger allows your S7 to display "fast charging" when you first plug it in, it is probably a legitimate charger. My S7 charger will charge my phone from 10% to 100% in about an hour. I had a fake charger that I bought on Ebay which did not allow the phone to go into fast charge mode. Luckily, I have a friend who owns a phone store.
He plugged my phone into a real Samsung charger and the "fast charging" displayed on my phone. Upon examining the fake charger, we noticed it did not have the UL approved writing on the charger base. Of course you wouldn't have that because you have the Europe charger. I did not test amperage of my charger but it says 2.0 Amps on the unit.
