[Q] Question about streaming/pc requirements... - Shield Q&A

Hello. I've got a question about the PC Streaming. My rig is good...except for the processor. I'm running a Core 2 Quad OC'd @ 3GHz. My question is, does the streaming feature utilize instruction sets that are specific to the iCore series? GFE doesn't take into account that my processor is overclocked either. Just wondering, I would really like to stream games but can't invest in a new processor/mobo right now...thanks!

I don't know about the processors but it seems it's willing to stream even if you don't meet all the requirements (I'm using a computer that has a 32bit operating system so I don't have all my ram [long story]). I won't say for sure it will work, but as long as you meet the GPU requirements It should be fine

This is what I thought too, since I have 2x Intel Xeon Quad-Cores clocked at 2.24 GHz, I figured getting a Kepler GPU would fix the "NOT READY" problem GFE was showing me. Sure enough, it thinks my processor("s") AREN'T POWERFUL ENOUGH -_-

Make sure you're on the beta channel for steam, (and if that doesn't work try beta drivers for the gpu. Also make sure you're firewall is allowing it to connect

Did you install the beta graphics driver?
Put Steam in beta mode?
Reinstall Geforce Experience (this is the one that fixed mine)

Wait really? Your processor is not marked as ready but it still streams? Is your computer connected to WiFi or ethernet?

No, My processor does meet the requirements (first gen i7 quad-core), my RAM however, does not (~3GB). I was simply making the point that just because you don't meet all the requirements (and it tells you so) doesn't mean you can't stream. HOWEVER, I have no idea if this is unique to RAM. But I'm willing to bet that as long as you have a GTX 650 or higher, it will at least try to stream. (mind you streaming with 3GB of ram is a horrible idea, you run out very quickly)
As for my computer, it's connected to my (****ty b/g) wireless access-point/router via ethernet. It streams, but not well

It must be that my computer does not reach the requirements of the processor, GFE will DEFINITELY not allow a processor that doesn't meet min specs. (EVEN THOUGH MINE DOES!!!!)

Unfortunately, I fall into a similar category also.
I have a GPU and CPU that exceeds the requirements, but I get "Not Ready" for streaming (and cannot stream).
GPU = GTX 680
CPU = AMD A10-6800K )4.1Ghz w/ no overclock).
Win 7 Home PRemium 64 bit
Asus RT-N66U router
GF driver version = 326.41 (tried all the reinstall instructions and such as suggested in other "streaming problem" type threads here)
* Steam is set to Beta Participation and has been relaunched to apply the Beta exe and resources.
I used the chat function with NVIDIA Tech Support and despite being polite, thorough and quick to respond, their only reply was "that CPU is currently unsupported, use the Send Feedback function in GFE to request the CPU be supported."
I have tried to chat with them several more times to get a specific list of supported CPUs, to no avail.
I'm not angry, but definitely bummed since my CPU falls into the "or higher" side of the AMD requirements...
and I do realize it's in Beta, so I will wait patiently.

I'm thinking of throwing together a tool that lets you fake all the data that GFE is trying to read so it thinks a system is supported. No idea if it would work or not, but...
Also thinking of ideas to make controller support work in more games...

Thanks for the help, I'm going to try beta Steam in a sec...I have been searching for a way to spoof the processor to GFE with no results, so this would be EXTREMELY helpful...also, since I saw you mention it in another thread, does my PC need to be physically connected to the router? Your PC does not need to be physically connected to the router.
I use wifi only.
PC = wifi on 5Ghz
SHIELD = wifi on 5Ghz.
ASUS NT-R66U router.
No lag, but of course, that depends on radius and noise.
Also, just for shifts and wiggles, I took all other wifi devices off of 5Ghz band. These are my only 2 devices on 5Ghz for now.

Burning CD's with Android

So I've pretty much replaced my laptop with my transformer. Yea my laptop has a 17 inch screen, but to be honest with you its so big I never wanted to take it anywhere! Isn't a laptop supposed to be PORTABLE? I feel like I can (and should) take the TF everywhere. It seems tiny when docked, but just right when used as a tablet.
I love it.
The only thing stopping me from selling my laptop at this point is that I need to burn CD's occasionally. Is there any app out there that can access an external burner so that I can make CD's from music I have stored on my external drive?

Probably more a matter of time, at least if there's interest in it, but might be a long time. Didn't Honeycomb just add USB host support? I don't think it would've been possible before that.

Not necessarily at all, not all manufacturers provide Linux drivers for their hardware (Android is linux underneath it all). As well, I'm not sure exactly how Linux drivers work, but each CD burner might need their own set of drivers
If the iso drivers are in the kernel, the system will know about cd/dvd disks and drives. The issues is a program to do the burning.

So I plugged in my external DVD writer, and the kernel currently is not reconigzing it.
So that is step 1, someone adding the drivers into the kernel.
After that, it is simly a matter of re-building cdrecorder and mkisofs for an ARM target and writing a little UI on top of it.

I would dust the laptop back off......There are not enough devs or support for at least another 2 yrs to have a bug free Android OS. Also you have the first model of about 15 major tabs in the next 2 yrs! Just because it has a docking station means nothing. Don't get me wrong i love Android.....but leaving windows 7 and coming up 8????? Not to mention all the bugs because its a "beta" product. Actually i wouldn't even call this Alpha..Android OS should of release a GOOGLE laptop first with all the correct hardware specs and almost bug free before letting anyone put there OS on a tablet and sell it...Every Honeycomb tablet that has been made has issues. And its the hardware not being fully compatible.

I think you are way over thinking this.
It wouldn't take much to make android completely replace a full size os.

If you replaced android with another operating system on your post, that can apply to any OS system on the planet. Be it windows, osx, Linux or what ever a company puts out. Not one OS or hardware is immune. Perfect software only happens when it's on the drawing board. The longer android is out the better it gets..but honeycomb has been out a very short time and is only on 5 percent of the devices running google OS. There are more then enough developers for it.
I'm looking for an external dvd burner to work with the TF also. Seems like a lot of TF owners are looking too. Hopefully someone with xda will develop the software...
Not exactly what you want but it might help
Check out this product.....It adds an extra step and it would be kinda kludgy at best.......It is a standalone cd burner.
http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=11177
They also have a DVD burner. There may be others out there as well. I have been wanting this as well and don't really want to spend extra to get the capability right now at least.
Awesome! Definitely a solid solution. And a great idea in general! Thanks for the info

technically you don't need any of those things you listed to burn a cd in linux, all you need is the command line.

I don't think he's looking to reboot into a full-blown Ubuntu environment (where nothing else works) just to burn a DVD... The whole point of this thread is to get Android-native tools to do the burning - not setup some half-working OS to do the task...
I don't see what the Unix "cdrecord" and "mkisofs" utilities can't be ported over to Android. Although, I don't have the skills to do that, so maybe it's not such a trivial task...

Windows 8 on Transformer

Hello,
is there any way to install Windows 8 on this tablet? (when not, in the future?)
lg
This question has been addressed several times. In short, no, there is no way and there won't be a way. Ubuntu is under development for the TF700T though.
No, because its proprietary and will brick your tablet due hardware incompatibly. There is also ArchLinux for the ARM and the Linux kernel will be released for arm soon. This means that at least you will have many more operating systems/ROM's to choose from.

The Linux kernel for ARM has been out for a long time, otherwise Android couldn't exist.
The last time I tried Linux was about 6 years ago. It wasnt ready for non-geeks then and it still isn't now. I tried Ubuntu yesterday. 6 years mind you and it still did not manage to install flawlessly on a brand new unformatted drive on my PC. It still couldn't manage, once I did get it to install, to get a driver installed for a Linksys PCI wireless card. WMP54s have been around for a while...so have Broadcom chips. But I would still like to see what it would be like on a tablet.....

Its come much, much farther since you used/tried it and will be hitting mobile devices soon. Hopefully, it will be fully usable when it hits and more user friendly. Like just flashing a ROM rather than trying to format/install.

As mentioned many times before all over XDA Microsoft Windows 8 or RT is not a free open source OS.
Even if some clever genius somehow managed to actually do this it certainly would not be a good idea to let Microsoft find out.
I'm almost sure if this was ever cracked and installed on Android powered devices the wrath of MS would be forthcoming.
This is a real can of worms and I believe XDA would do well to forbid this subject in any of the forum sections.
The best option is to buy a device built for and legally preloaded with Windows.
Ah, no, not going to happen.
Besides, if you want W8 on a Transformer, look up "Vivo Tab."

I agree, but its not just that, the source code would be required to make it work on this device. So, its not just that its "not allowed", but that it is not physically compatible. Therefore even if cracked, it would still be of no use.

[Q] Root help for Proscan PLT7223G - CPU: RK2928 - GPU: Mali-400 MP

I have a 7" Proscan PLT7223G, CPU: Rockchip RK2928 1.008Ghz, GPU: Mali-400 MP dual core by ARM running Android jellybean 4.1 with Google Play in it.
(Not letting me post a url, but if you google "PLT7223G manual" you'll get a page where there's a firmware and pdf manual ready to download.)
This is a cheap device (the one I could afford till I buy a better one) that I bought from walmart and I would love to root this device but so far have found no help anywhere on the internet. I know an expensive device has many users and more chances of being rooted, but is it possible to root this fairly obscure one?
I am fairly comfortable with using Android SDK and JDK or any one-click installer.
Can any one help and/or point me to the right direction? It's overwhelmingly info-rich and confusing for an android newbie like me around here :S
I would be super super grateful if anyone can help me root this one.
Thanks guys.

Go here then:
http://www.cydiaimpactor.com/
If you need help installing adb driver try www.snappea.com. Just install on Pc, then when program prompts you connect phone to PC with USB Debugging enabled and it will take care adb driver for you.
I purchased the same tablet PLT-7223G-4K from Woot two weeks ago.
I can confirm that Cydia Impactor will successfully drop SU into /system/xbin. From there, I was able to get a # root prompt in ADB shell and do whatever I pleased. (Thanks to the persons above me for pointing that out, I was getting a little frustrated with this thing.)
I can also say that the generic Google USB Driver will work for connecting to this tablet. I am running Windows 7 SP1 x64 and had just updated the Android SDK prior to trying various methods to root the tablet.
If you need any more specific information, I would be happy to help, since I have the exact same tablet and purchased it for the express purpose of poking it with sticks.
Success!
@Klown80 and @jfmajo Thank you very much! I've successfully rooted the device with cydiaimpactor without a single hitch. Got SU through adb shell and all! . Took less than 5 minutes!

+1 confirm for this method of root.
I've got the PLT7223G-K8G, It also runs on rk2928 This version has a 8gb flash and suppose to be clocked at 1.2ghz (more on that in a sec)
Got this at walmart blackfriday came with a KB case, suppose to be a Christmas present for my sister but I wanted to test it out
before giving it to here, I Just got into android my self 2 week ago.
Anyway I used I ran SRT appguard and it said it was vulnerable to 9695860 & 9950697
I tried detecting device in Cydia Impactor but it just said "requested resource not available" file missing?
So I used this USB driver here: ** Wont let me post links / See attached picture**
Cydia Impactor rooted successfully in about 30seconds, Funny srt appguard was still running and complained but it went thru anyway lol
Installed SU, all is good.
I was running WinXP x64
I could not find a firmware download for my particular model.. although you can find a list here:
** Wont let me post links / See attached picture**
Here's a list of firmwares for the 7223g model line
** Wont let me post links / See attached picture**
Now as for my particular model, I would not have bothered rooting it since it was suppose to be a gift however it has 2 problems.
1. The device is suppose to run at 1.2ghz.. mine is locked to a range of 800-1000 (awesome range huh?)
2. The governor seems to be really messed up.. no matter what type of load I put on it I could not get it to crawl out of 800mhz.
So I rooted to get Cpu tuner installed and working.. So now I've got it properly scaling ot 1ghz but that's still not right.
I've emailed CS but im not expecting much given the price and judging from their poor support on their website.
Debating if this shouldn't just go back to the store.
EDIT: Oh ya one more thing.. These tablets do not have a volume rocker.. just power button.. thought that was kinda on unusual other tablets I've seen all had volume buttons, I know that's usually how you boot them up into recovery.
EDIT2: LOL Well, dont bother emailing support.. I've tried twice both times bounced back fialure to deliver.
First time I thought it was because of the screen shot I attached, but 2nd one came back also.
Takes about a day for it to come back though, to lazy to look at the headers which are epic long.
Give them a call monday, probably gonna just return this tablet though.
EDIT3: Well I just realized the phone number is to Canada which counts as international on my cell.
So .. sent a email to their sales email hopefully that one don't get bounced.. If It does im probably gonna return it.
EDIT4: Ok sales address also bounces back, so both the email addresses on their site are borked.
EDIT5: Took it back for a refund, It developed a problem with charging on the 3rd cycle, it said it was 100% but the battery was flat dead and would turn off soon as I unplugged it.
I think the battery was bad I noticed it was warm right before this happen even when not doing anything..
To bad, tablet actually felt pretty solid in the hand.
Won't Show Up
I can't seem to get my Proscan to show up, I have all proper drivers installed, USB Debugging enabled, but it still doesn't show up

Use app guard to check and see if the device is vulnerable to 8219321 or 9695860
If it is then Cydia Impactor will likely root it.
I posted how I did it on the proscan I had 2 posts up.
Should be same process if your device is vulnerable to either of those security flaws.

Ok I can confirm this works, downloaded root checker and root explorer. Both worked...is there a thread on here for this device or similar ones?
wondering how hard it would be to get a working custom recovery, would have to be something touch without keys, probably like TWRP. wouldnt mind doing some theme for this device.

I think this is the only thread on the device.. or at least the biggest.
My unit was suppose to be a present for my sister.. but it turned out to be trash.. at least my particular one was
CPU was capped at 1ghz not 1.2.. broken governor never let the cpu get above 800mhz (lowest freq)
and battery quit taking a charge on 3rd cycle (despite it saying it was 100% charged.. it was a lie)
Support is basicly non existent for proscan, some units don't even have firmwares on their website, support/sales email addresses just bounce stuff back.
Ended up returning it and getting a azpen a700 from micro center for 40 bucks, smaller outfit but at least they have something resembling support.
android 4.2.2, technically inferior ot the proscan I had but since the unit I had was garbage I guess that's moot.
It's surprisingly snappy for what it is Allwinner a13 @ 1.2ghz, kernel allowed up to 1.5ghz but the unit I got was unstable even at 1250 so they must run those tabs at the ragged edge of stability, no issues at 1.2 though.
If you got a good proscan I graduate you, The one I had actually felt very solid and good in the hand.
Slightly above average screen for cheap tabs.
I updated my proscan plt-7223g with the firmware from curtis international now i dont have touch capability or internet connection. I'm still able to navigate with the keyboard. What i'm asking is if anyone has the stock image or stock firmware for it? It would awesome to get it back to out of the box state.

@Klown80 and @jfmajo Thank you very much! I've successfully rooted the device with cydiaimpactor without a single hitch. Got SU through adb shell and all! . Took less than 5 minutes!
Am loving this tablet now! It's actually quite fast and smooth now that I've been using it much.
Next stop: how to remove bloatware and make my inexpensive device even faster and show it off to my friends who got expensive ones eh!! Any suggested readings? Please do share!
Thanks so much again. You guys rock!

[Q] Nvidia apps (ex. Grid Beta) on other devices?

I had been looking into running certain applications that for some reason only run on other devices I do not have onto my own set of devices, such as my primary, the note 3 from Verizon. I had successfully been able to achieve root and have safestrap with a partition of hyperdrive so I can test apps on there without ruining my default rom. First, I had seen that a file called, "build.prop" was accessible after root to mess around with to achieve running "non-compatible" apps on my note 3. While this did seem like a good method to attempt to get apps I could not get originally from the play store, a problem struck (well actually a few more than one). I needed to know multiple pieces of info from the device that was compatible with the app I wanted to use in the first place such as model number etc. I thought at first that I would have been able to get that info off the Nvidia Shield by searching it up online. That however was a failure since I could note find anything. My main point is that I would like to know if there is a way of flashing or installing the nvidia grid app to my note 3 after having succeeded to root the device.
This has been talked about before, a guy attepted to get it too work on another device but failed.
Grid is mean't only for the shield, no offense but we also don't need people from other devices sucking up grids connections anyway.
Also if I remember right, on nvidia's forums nvidia tried to make it in a way to only work on the shield.
If you really want to play pc games on it, use splashtop thd and stream games from your pc too your device.
try this
if you have a rooted ouya, and know how to extract an appstore apk, then try the amazing frog on the shield, it has full controller support for shield and is pretty fun, especially if you want the experience on the go

It must be more than just build.prop, more on system files. Like an assert check.
The closest I got was just changing the build.prop, just to download the damn app.
Nvidia is a large company anyway, they can handle it, they let Ouya on it.

You forget that Ouya has it, and it's Tegra 3 (Not 4), plus 1GB of Ram. This app is worth cracking down.
(Something Wikipad Inc. has very similar specs to and definitely what I'm looking into)
Don't use Splashtop THD, little to no controller support and forces resolution.
Use Kainy, for now...

Hello, I actually own a wikipad, in which you were talking about, and it is somewhat similar to the shield. I rooted it and I'm trying to get the grid beta app. I read a thing saying that it was only for people living in California because their towers signal doesn't go everywhere. I managed to download the app from apptoide but when you try to open it it tells you that your device isn't supported and I guess editing the build.prop to the shields doesn't work. Once the app is off the beta version someone will probably crack it.
No offense but I hope GRID sticks to SHIELD. If others start hogging up the servers we'll never get to enjoy the games on the device they are meant for.

The games are meant for PC so your statement contradicts itself..

Is there a way to run a OS on my phone from a server?

i have been toying with this idea for the last few years. neptune suite had this concept to run android from a smart watch onto "dumb" screens. would there be a way to use LTE to run a OS from a home server? if the speeds wouldnt be fast enough would doing it locally be possible? would it need 5g speeds?
the reason behind this is the low life expectancy behind phones today. this could be a possible solution to run android on a computer/server that you can upgrade over time. it will host the os to any "dumb" screens.
im more curious if anyone knows if this is possible technically.
Thanks!

PC already has its own way of running Android and PC can share screen with any device that can connect on the same network so this is not only possible, it's already being done. In more than one way and with more than a few software/hardware combinations.

well how does that work casting in portrait and not using a mouse

say i wanted a 1 to 1 emulation of N casted to my phone or a "dumb" screen. does a program exist that can host android including touch screen inputs?
Now that i think about it maybe a better comparison would be how chrome os runs on a computer. can you do that with android but 100% of the entire os ? and instead of google hosting it, i host it from my own server.

You can host anything installed on PC, you use an emulator on the PC to run a full android OS on PC then use one of the various apps for remotely accessing PC.
With that you can run Android on PC and view and use it from your smartphone.

alright awesome thank you. guess ill have to test it out and see how smooth it runs.
do you know a program that would use 802.11ad? if i wanted to set up a local system

You might actually be interested in a Raspberry Pi, they can run virtually any OS you want to install and they're fun to put together.

i have a Pi for this application i would want something which all the components are upgradable. and something i could bring with me and carry in a backpack.
can you think of any way to accomplish everything that a modern phone provides without having to get a new phone every(or every other) year? you can get a pc or a playstation, or tv or many other things and easily be comfortable using it for 5+ years. but not phones. i often brainstorm about different ways to make this happen. even if its stupidly complex and diy. just fun to think about

I can't really see it being that feasible without upgrading to a newer phone as time goes by. Mobile hardware/software evolves faster than PC these days. After a few years, a mobile device can't keep up, even with the setup you are looking for because in the end, you're still trying to do everything from a mobile device, no matter how you loop it, you're still on dated mobile hardware.
