[Q] Shield cant find PC - Shield Q&A

I am thing I missed something but my Shield cant find my pc. Geforce experience says everything is good but the wifi, and says I need wireless a/g router or a wireless n router is needed, I have a wireless n access point but no router.
Here is what Geforce experience says about my pc.

GeForce GTX 660
GeForce GTX 660
GeForce GT 620
CPU
Inter(R) Core(TM) i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz
Memory
63.95 GB
Current Resolution

Driver Version

Operating System
Microsoft Windows Ultimate
If more specific PC specs are needed please tell me.

Is your PC on wireless, or do you have it wired to the network? Also, from 1wayjonny:
Please check your advanced wireless router settings and check if IGMP snooping is enabled.
If so try to disable IGMP snoop or any jitter correction like WMM as well.
Hope this helps, it took hours to figure out the router setting.

No my PC is not on wireless, it is connected to a gigabit Switch. I am not sure if that switch goes to the WiFi AP or if it goes to another switch then the WiFi AP.
I already looked for IGMP snooping and did not see anything close to that.

And you've checked that your SHIELD has taken the update (you'd know, it requires a reboot like any OTA)

It might be related to my problem, but check these:
1. Are the IP of your shield and PC on the same network, only last number is different? (ex. 192.168.1.*) If so then they are on the same "router".
2. You are already on the beta drivers, make sure you have the newest Shield firmware like agrabren mentioned.
3. Reboot everything.
4. In Geforce experience, have you had it scan for games? This is a must and must be done first.
5. Now go to Preferences and click on the Streaming Tab. Is "Allow..." checked? If so, click the reset button.
6. Try going to PC Play on your shield and hopefully it will see your PC.

my shield matches the above.

Rebooting is always the magic elixir
My problem was my shield could see my PC but not acknowledge the connection. I fixed it by uninstalling Geforce Experience and reinstalling it (scanning for games, clicking reset under streaming, then trying it). Try uninstalling GE (not the drivers), rebooting, reinstalling and giving it a go.

Define everything please.
a list of everything (I can currently think of) on my LAN
1 24 port gigabit switch (stuck at 100Mbps)
1 5 port gigabit switch
1 DSL Modem
1 Printer
1 WiFi AP
4 Servers (lan only)
? WiFi Devices
2+ Desktop PCs
1 FXO/FXS voip adapter
1 2xFXS voip adapter
There is probably more I have forgotten.
Some of those things have a good chance of having problems after rebooting.

I was thinking of just the PC and the Shield, but looking at the list of things on your network I'm thinking the PC might not be the problem. There might be something in the AP or the two switches that is preventing the Shield from seeing it. You might try getting some Android network tools (ping and such) to test if the shield can see the PC's IP. I haven't done network troubleshooting with Android so I can't recommend any good methods, but you could probably find some forums on XDA that would help.
I'd try the reinstall of Geforce Experience first just to make sure it's not that.

ping says that both the shield and pc can see each other. reinstalling GFE

I had to uninstall both my graphics driver and GFE client and reinstall them to get mine working...
And dang, that's a heck of a setup.
If you search for mDNS or Bonjour tools, they have a discovery tool that should help you find your GFE PC. That's how SHIELD does it.

I have reinstalled GFE, Drivers, and have restarted both my pc and shield no diffference. Shield says "No available GeForce GTX PCs Found"

Hi
I have this running on a DAP-1525 access point so its OK that it is not the router.
I saw you looked for the IGMP, and that sucker was my exact issue after hours. The funny thing is it was default while the router did not have this default from factory.
Would you mind sharing what AP model you have?

sure my access point is a trendnet TEW-638APB. Thought I posted that, but it looks like i did not.

I'm fully stumped. At work, I have the following setup (which is a closer match to your setup than my home setup)
1x NetGear Gigabit Switch
1x NetGear N900 Wireless Router in AP mode (only cable is from switch to internet port)
2x PCs connected to Gigabit Switch
The discovery traffic is mDNS (also known as Bonjour) so if anything is configured to filter that out, that'll be a problem. It's also considered a broadcast packet, so you may be able to research Bonjour or mDNS and your wireless AP or other equipment... If you have another computer on the network, there are tools for mDNS discovery, you could use those to see if the PC is appearing (but I don't remember it's discovery name).
Wish I could be more help, but not really my area. I'm an Android guy. You can also try grabbing a logcat on your device, it may say something when you go into the TegraZone dashboard.

will try logcat, and I did try using mdnsscarn from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mdnstools/?source=navbar and windows that spits out "Port 47989 is open on 192.168.0.76"

That sounds like the port... But there should be a service name with it from mDNS...

Can I get the exact name for that mdns service, I can't find anything close to dns or mdns running on my computer.
actully I can find something but only dnscache.

My only other suggestions for debugging is make sure the nvStreaming service is running. If you start the Task Manager (right click on start bar) then look for NVSTREAMER.EXE. If it's not running that's the main problem. There's a service for it (Admin tools/services) that I think GFE installs. If it's there and not running then try starting it. If it's not there at all then I guess reinstall GFE again.
Another thing I can think to try is turn off windows firewall (or any that you are using) in the Control Panel.
The last thing is to isolate your setup to just the Shield, wireless AP, and PC. Plug the AP (LAN port) directly into the PC so it's just serving the Shield wirelessly and the PC wired. If the AP is just a simple WAN port (no LAN) then see if you can set it up as a bridge (a pain) or better yet, try another AP. Hopefully you can isolate the problem.

I have a nvstreamsvc.exe but no nvstreamer.exe

Exactly how to use ICS (WM6.1) with a laptop?

So I thought this would be easy. I _finally_ got my XV6800 flashed and up and running with a DCD ROM.
My main reason was to use ICS with any laptop in an easy fashion the way it was intended to be used.
So I'm all excited, get my USB cable, plug it into the laptop and I'm not sure what is supposed to exactly happen.
On my phone I have:
PC Connection: USB
Network Connection: Data Connection (my only and active data network connection)
When I connect it and click on 'Connect' it says 'Check USB cable connection'. I should also mentioned though that before I do any of this, when I connect the phone to the laptop it doesn't quite recognize the device yet (this is an XP laptop) and launches the new hardware wizard for Generic RNDIS.
So do I first have to pair the two somehow? I read somewhere that essentially the laptop will use the phone as another network card of sorts. If that is the case, do I need to set all that up on the laptop first?
I tried Googling ICS how-to or ICS guide or ICS (insert-keyword-here) and amazingly, I can't find a simple guide on how this works.
Any help would be appreciated! (I searched threads here and can't find anything either)
Well, here is what I figured out so far. You HAVE to have MS Activesync on the target laptop it seems from all I could find, so the downside to this approach vs. some other methods is you can't connect it to any laptop at random unless they have AS installed.
The wierd part is it still doesn't fully work.
I noticed that when I connect now, it works and says 'Connected' and also observe the following:
1) Under my Network Apapters of device manager, my adapter changes from Windows Mobile-based Device to Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device
2) I see the little PC traffic/connection icon in the system tray just like I would expect it
But when I refresh my browser, there is still no activity :/
The Status tab says:
Status: Acquiring network address...and then changed to...Connected
Speed: 10.0 Mbps
Packets sent goes up about 1 every 2-4 seconds but received only stays very low usually, about 5-9...
Note: I made sure a data connection was first established on my phone before I turned on ICS

LG Incite CT810 - Problem with USB

So I got my shiny new LG Incite at Best Buy yesterday. I knew I was getting it a while ago, so I downloaded a bunch of games and apps to load it up with as soon as possible. I get home from the store, play around with it and let it charge for a while, then I try to connect it to my computer (After installing ActiveSync 4.5 from the included disk, as well as both of the USB drivers on the disk). Windows comes up with that "found new hardware" stuff and asks where to look for the driver to install. I tell it to look on the CD, as well as the directories where the USB drivers from the disk were installed. It looks like it's working at first, but then I get this error:
(Error: "The data is invalid.")
Then it gives me the message balloon about how there was an error during installation and my new hardware may not work properly, etc. Now when I go to Device Manager, a number of things showed up with that little yellow exclamation point that I'm pretty sure were not there before, but I could be wrong:
- IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers: VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
- Network Adapters: Unknown device, WAN miniport (L2TP), WAN miniport (Network Monitor), and Windows Mobile-based Device
- Ports (COM & LPT): Communications Port (COM1)
So I tried reinstalling the drivers from a link I found in a thread on these boards (after clicking uninstall for "Windows Mobile-based Device" and having it tell me that the device is necessary to boot up the computer), but the same thing keeps happening. I also tried having ActiveSync scan for devices, but it never finds anything (Just says that USB is "available").
Please help, I really want to start putting pictures, music, and all that good stuff on my brand new phone
(btw, I'm pretty sure the problem is with the software/drivers on the computer, because when I plug in the USB cable the phone starts to charge. Other than that, nothing happens on the phone.)
If at all possible, I would try using the phone with another computer. For quite some time I was only able to sync data with my laptop and not my desktop, so I knew it was a software issue and not the phone itself.
would say it's down to
dead activesync install and no uninstalling it is not enough one have
to remove all traces of it in registry too
and it could also be an issue with usb drviers for the motherboard

Well, I'm not going to have another computer until September at least, so I really want to get it working on this computer, but I guess I could test it out on a friend's pc to see if my computer is the problem.

Know of any links or tutorials that would tell me all of the registry entries I'd have to remove?
(Sorry for the double post, but no one was replying...)
So I found my bluetooth adapter for my PC, and after I installed the proper software I could connect to my phone no problem. After that, I just used the bluetooth adapter's software to transfer files to my phone via FTP. (ActiveSync still just sat there, even when I set my phone to sync with bluetooth instead of USB, and I allowed wireless connections in ActiveSync)
So I'm glad I can finally transfer files, but I still want to get USB working. No one has any ideas at all?
(Triple post... sorry)
Ok, something happened to the bluetooth drivers and software now. I turned my computer off for the night after using bluetooth to transfer files to my phone, but when I turned on my pc today and clicked the shortcut to start the bluetooth software, I got a message saying that the program the shortcut was linking to no longer existed. Sure enough, the folder was gone from my Program Files directory. Now, every time I try to reinstall it, I get an error 183 that installation was interrupted.
So now I'm back to having no means of transferring files to my phone.
Please, any suggestions at all will be helpful to me at this point. I'm at my wits end!
Any progress on this?
I have a similar problem. I think usb sync worked on my laptop at one point, but hasn't for at least a week.
I was able to fix the problem at least temporarily by disconnecting the device, deleting it from ActiveSync and reconnecting. ActiveSync happily added it back and resynced everything. Now I can install the new Xcite ROM.
Still nothing...
Now my computer doesn't do anything at all when I plug my phone in, not even make a noise or ask about drivers. My phone, however, still recognizes that it's plugged in.
At least I got bluetooth working again, but still, USB would be nice.
It's hard to believe that out of every member on this forum, no one has even the slightest idea of where to start...
Menu - settings - connections - USB to PC.

[Q] ADB and New Hardware

Ok I did everything correctly from this website on how to install ADB on windows XP. Since i'm new, I can't post it up yet.
I got all the way up to the last bit and still my comp "new hardware wizard" keeps saying "Cannot find hardware". WTF....i have the google usb drivers, but it still won't work. Also i downloaded the java program for it.
PLEASE HELP
addictivetips.com / mobile / what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/
^^^^This is the site that i used.
What device do you have?
Some require external drivers (e.g. Motorola USB Drivers).
I have the HTC Thunderbolt from Verizon
Kappa,
Check this out: androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/302621-ready-root-your-thunderbolt-but-adb-confusing-you.html
As roee88 alluded to, a lot of devices have their own ADB drivers. You wanna go with them first. HTH / Good luck
Thanks RD, that really helped. the problem now is that whenever I install the HTC Sync software for the usb drivers, it totally messes with my internet. My comp says it's connected to the internet with the enthernet connection, but i won't be able to surf the net or the internet browser tells me I'm not connected. My intel/pro set wireless says there is no wireless hardware. When i do a system restore, everything is back to normal and i have internet access. What's going on????
Kappa,
Definitely not "normal" behavior. I would just start from scratch. Before going at it again, check HTC's support site that you are using the most current drivers & sync software for your OS & phone, making sure you pay attention to whether you need 32 or 64-bit version. Reinstall. Reboot. Try syncing the phone again, and afterward see if the problem repeats itself.
In the unfortunate case that it does, the only lead I have for you is that I seem to remember (I haven't played around with HTC Sync in a long while) that the prog installs its own network adapter, so maybe when it is active (like after doing a sync) it disables your other network interfaces, e.g., Wireless. I think you said you're using XP, so in Control Panel-->Network Connections check that the Wireless is active.
I also seem to recall something about an Internet pass-through toggle in the software; this could be relevant as well, but sorry-- it's been a while. Good luck.

[Q] Kies via Wi-Fi (not Kies Air)

Sorry... maybe a stupid question... (I've searched the net and XDA before posting it, but didn't find any valid solution, just some trace of this same problem referred to other Samsung devices)
The question is:
How can I make the option "Kies via Wi-Fi - Connect to Kies via Wi-Fi" work?
I've downloaded the last version of Kies from Samsung support and installed it on my Win7 PC. I also followed the "Wi-Fi Connection Setup Guide".
I start Kies on the PC and press the "Kies via Wi-Fi button on the GNote but my PC doesn't recognize my Note 10.1 and the scanning on the GNote gives no result.
When, in the GNote, I go to Settings-More settings-Kies via Wi-Fi I just get an Attention message ("Please use caution when transmitting information on an unsecured Wi-Fi network...."). I click OK, then there's a second message window on the bottom of which for a couple of seconds there's a Scan button that, when pressed, quickly changes to a Cancel button. After a while the Scan button reappears and, when pressed, is again changed on the Cancel button.
I can't make any headway from this stupid loop
In the meantime the Kies window on the PC shows the message "Please connect a device".
I'm not interested on Kies Air (that I think is another thing).
I just would like to quickly access my GNote from the PC (and maybe transfer some small file) without having to connect it with the USB cable (no problem with the USB cable connection: the GNote is recognized and I can access it).
The Note is usually connected to a Wi-Fi router on my PC, that is connected to Internet (that's how I can access the Internet at home with the GNote).
Probably I'm missing some setting? Or is Kies not working with this option? Anyone has successfully used this kind of connection?
Any link, advice, possible solution?
Thanks
Could be a Win7 problem: maybe connection is simply rejected since You can´t register and assign an Android device to a "home-network-group" which would allow every connection.
On my laptop I have an Intel-App called "MyWiFi" thus creating a peer-to-peer connection with Android devices. With this I don´t have problems to connect, BUT: when connected via MyWiFi I have to switch off the WiFi of my router otherwise GNote does not connect to MyWiFi .............
Better use the cable .......

Thanks troed.
I see that my problem (with win7) is one of those of difficult solution (I had nightmares in the past to configure my Wi-Fi network and make it work).
In the meantime (following the tip received in an italian forum) I've found an other app, called MyPhoneExplorer, that works exactly as I intended.
It's not just for Samsung devices but for any Android device.
It consists of a client app to be installed on the tablet (small size: 564 Kb)
and a program to be installed on the PC (installer is 6.45 Mb and the portable program folder is about 17 Mb).
With this app files can be easily exchanged between the PC and the GNote through Wi-Fi.
BTW Samsung Kies installer (90.5 Mb) is huge comparing to that and, at least for me and for many other Win7 users, doesn't work on Wi-Fi in spite of what is promised and advertised.
For the second time I can't understand why a big company like Samsung can't produce a simple good and working app whilst single developers can easily do that!
(the first case is with S Note that, IMHO, is lacking some essential feature that other apps have and that prevents me form using it as my primary note taking app)
Maybe Samsung's developers don't use their company's devices?
Or maybe they have no interest in producing good working apps and prefer to put out incomplete ones to better sell their next line of products?

Hello Sharpknight,
Although I am not a developer maybe I can help. I'll share some of my learning's with you. The Freedompop dongle I have has a feature called "Diskless Install" It initially acts like a USB Memory Stick and downloads the drivers then it is supposed to switch automatically into the 3G/4G mode and then connects to the web. Every other time it is installed it is supposed to switch back into the Memory stick mode. In case you plug it into another computer.
By the way If you try something and it doesn't work you may wish to unplug and replug the dongle as it may be in the wrong mode? You may even want to try rebooting. That may change the mode on the dongle.
First I did not see if you had rooted your S4. You must root your device before my instructions will work. If it is rooted, plug in your dongle and wait for it to lock onto the signal. You should have two or more bars that indicate the signal is being recv'd by the dongle.
Next launch the terminal mode and enter super user mode by typing "su".
At the next prompt type netcfg (note the port eth0 maybe?)
It will list all of the Mac addresses, ports and the IP addresses connected. If you can match the mac address of your dongle with what is shown in the table it is seeing the dongle.
I am not sure it conflicts but I turn off the WIFI radio also. I read somewhere that it would display the dongle connection in the system WIFI control panel although my Acer never has.
If you can see the dongle in the netcfg listing the next thing you have to do is assign the IP addr. by following these steps:
type: Ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.12 ( Can be any IP address you choose (You can type: netcfg again to confirm the Dongle is seen by the Tablet)
type: dhcpcd eth0 ( Wait for lease to complete and next prompt.)
type: setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8 (use any dns server - I used Google's free dns server or 8.8.4.4 also Google)
Launch your favorite browser and input 192.168.14.1 (for the FreedomPop PXU1964) for the URL or what ever URL is required by your device.
The FreedomPop setup screen should appear. Click on Network about center screen and it should show how many bytes transferred.
Click on the Advanced Link and insure it's set to NAT Mode.
I hope this helps - I will be out of internet range until Monday if you send me a note when I get back I'll reply if I see another post from you.
By the way I tried to reply to your post and it says you have turned off the reply via email in your profile.
Regards,
- Phil

Regards,
- Phil

Those ^ directions work. Only thing you might have to do differently is set the USB stick to NAT mode via your PC. Log in to 192.168.14.1 via your PC browser and put it into NAT mode. Then use those instructions. Worked for me on the Galaxy S4. Thanks Phil.
Awesome - Glad it worked!!

So, what kernel module / driver is missing if I can light up the stick and see the bare USB device, but netcfg never sees an eth0 device?
I am running CyanogenMod 10.2 on a B&N Nook HD+ (but I tried CM10.1 with exactly the same results).
Thanks in advance...

Hello Wanderso,
I was in Dripping Springs & Austin a week ago - for the week.....
Here is a couple of things. CyanogenMod 10.1 or 10.2 should have everything you need.
1. Plug your FreedomPop dongle into a PC or laptop first and follow the instructions with the unit to put it into NAT mode. Open a browser window and type 192.168.14.1 (if my memory is correct) and go from there.
By the way FreedomPop has a couple of dongles. I have never tried this procedure with the newer dongles. But there is no reason I know of that would stop this from working on those.
2. Next in my instructions I used eth0 (thats eth zero, but could be any available port eth1, eth2, or usb0 or usb1, ect)
Also remember that every other time the Dongle is plugged in it acts like a jump drive with a start-up program on it. So if it doesn't respond when you run your script or type it in, unplug it and re-plug it and try the script again. The second time it is installed it acts like the Radio dongle and not like a jump drive. Let me know if that helps.
Good luck! - Phil
Also for a little more history and maybe a few tips check out this thread toward the bottom I documented the steps I took to get my Acer A500 working it might also help.

Phil:
Hope you enjoyed your visit to Central Texas, but you missed the great weather we are having now, and ACL :good: but come back anytime...
I've tried your entire procedure, but the issue (I believe) is a issue in the CDC and/or RNDIS drivers on the Nook HD+ (Ovation). I need some diagnostic procedures to understand what the kernel is thinking when I plug in the stick. No "eth0" or "usb0" device shows up when i plug it in, even though it is connecting to the WiMax network (as indicated by the external lights on the stick). I have set the stick to NAT mode on a PC, and have tried to plug / unplug to get it to cycle through its boot modes.

Thanx Wanderso not sure when the next time I'll be there is.
As I am not a developer I had to spend a lot of time researching to come up with the procedure I used. I did a quick google search and found this link among others that seemed to fit the issue your having. What puzzles me with this issue is that the device should be recognized as a USB Drive initially by your Nook HD+, and it doesn't seem to do so. OH! Just had a brain flash! One of the problems many tablets have is that these Dongles draw a lot of power, sometimes more than the ports on the tablets can supply due to the radio. Can you try a powered USB port extension to see if that helps?
Here is the link I ran across in the google search: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12974114/detection-of-plugged-in-usb-device
Could you keep me in the loop as you have me intrigued and I like to see how to solve the problem. I'll keep looking and let you know if I find anything that may help you solve the problem.. We can solve this I'm sure! :good:
Regards,
- Phil
PS. I ran across a thread with what is suspiciously like the problem I refered to the USB ports draw down the voltage and caused connection problems. check it out:
