Simply curious. Were you talking to a Customer Service rep? If so, I'm astonished they referred to software technicians. It's AT&T policy that they answer your question, i.e. they no nothing about an update & stop there. Again, only curious.

Then you're one lucky guy or that rep decided to break protocol. I couldn't even get a straight answer from CS today on Twitter (like transparency!) about an OTA update that appeared out of the blue for S III users (JB)! Finally got my answers via DM.

I have been an AT&T customer for over 8 years now and with a few exceptions, most ALL CS agents are script readers and "up-sellers" ( keep trying to sell me their Uverse crap)......oh well, it still beats talking to someone in India though.
Actuallly I think it (AT&T support) is getting a little better. In my quest for MF3 I 'spoke' to three. The chat-bot rep was an id10t. Call #2, Luis tried to be helpful, but couldn't figure out how to get it to me (but stay tuned). Call #3 Annie spent over 30m with me tried several different paths and consulted with a upper level group and found that the upgrade 'send OTA' message function was locked - she could see the button but it was greyed out, probablly because they were trying to control the rate of users hitting their server for the 359MB download.
2 days later I answered the fourth call from AT&T support (i was in meetings during the day) and (figuring it was just the stupid 'how did we do survey' I wasn't THAT motivated) - knock me over with a feather - Luis was calling me back, he had continued to research the issue, reached the right people and wanted to confirm it was a good time to push the OTA message. He had me turn OFF WiFi, had the super level tech push the message and told me to turn WiFi back on when I had a good connection.
Poof. Update spilled down and worked.

AT&T support tech had the solution to my problem
AT&T support tech's solution was correct
It felt so 1960s...

You're right about At&t being dumb they sold me my gs4 for 50$ all b/c the rep was reading an old note that said any android phone earlier upgrade for 50$ turns out that he was wrong about the early upgrade and 50$ but b/c he put that on the notes the next rep I spoke to said they had to give it to me for that. My gain their lost lol well kinda

You don't want it just yet. The app to SD only works on a few apps it didn't really free up any room. You should stay on mdl and root it check out mint jelly I used it before I updated and I regret that move.

I just transferred all my apps to the SD this morning... Every single game/app that ive downloaded from the playstore is on my external SD card now so im not sure what you mean by only a "few" apps.
BTW, I coudnt get the OTA MF3 update either so I was able to find a zip file from someone on XDA and I flashed it using recovery...

Here is a link to the Official MF3 update zip file. I uploaded the file to my dropbox account. I received this from another member who downloaded it on his phone through the ATT update software and copied it onto his PC to use later. I have been using it for several weeks have not any issues, I've recently rooted it with the MF3 root exploit as well.

Ok so please don't flame me for posting another possible update thread. I don't know if anyone follows ChiefzReloaded on Twitter. He is an android dev I followed back when I had the MyTouch 3g Slide and he developed for that phone. He tweeted the following:

I was on the phone with executive care at T-mobile this evening 6pm and they swapped me out for a sensation because they had no idea when the update would be released. I don't think they would do that if it was being pushed today.

Social media works very well IMHO. I had an ongoing gripe with T-Mobile that I wasn't able to solve even after multiple phone calls and chats and speaking to managers. I blasted them on Twitter and voila. Not only did I get the problem taken care of, but I got an EVP of customer service to call me back, and an extremely deeply discounted phone out of the deal. If you want to look at a good example of using social media to force a company's hand, look at the #NeverAgain movement with the Vibrant.

True, neither were GB roms until after all the work our devs put into them the same will go for ICS if it does come out. The devs will have everything they need to make it awesome. Even though they are going a hell of a job now, no pun intended lol.

I saw the boycott lg thing on twitter. I saw the responses where lg says nvidia told them not to release HAL.
Nvidia is wrong. Even if they are following the letter of the law they are violating the spirit and intention of open source.
It would be nice if Google did the right thing and sued them.

I figured that it had to been an official Samsung software. It minds me of the Motorola software that got leaked years back. I can't remember the name of it. I used to flip with nextel i930 (classic my 1st smart phone ever. I wish that made smart phone clam style again) with it.

Thanks everyone. I generally assumed it was official Samsung software but it makes sense if it gets leaked from repair shops and such. Its just interesting that we seem to get pretty frequent updates when new phones/roms come out. This thread had me laughing though.

To me, it makes sense that Samsung made this but I dont think it's for Samsung. I think Samsung developed it for repair shops and such as someone else suggested. I agree Samsung devs shouldn't need a straight forward gui. Butttt then again, this is why I asked and it seems that odin magically showed up and we have just been getting updates ever since. If we dont know where the origin, maybe the source of updates might get us somewhere.

Yup. It was an insane hiring process. 2 phone interviews and a foot interview. But I'm now starting in the largest corporate store in the local area. Apparently anyone who gets to work at the one I'm at is getting fast tracked. So stoked.

Any customer service job sucks.
i would hate to work that job. would have to be a pretty good kick for new phones and phone plan. verizon is really expensive and everyone is rolling out new phones like bakeries roll out cookies.
It'll be a matter of time before you start hating the job. Dealing with retards will do that to you sadly.

Funny thing i fixed a man's printer by plugging it in - it's a small world after all.
Well it looks like AT&T is trying to stop Loki, to no surprise really but all I keep seeing is people trying to update for the new lackluster SD Card feature and COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that secure boot is now enabled in the update and AT&T is making strides on the aboot to block Loki.
Just a fair warning to not update
Also Dan is aware if I'm not mistaken.

They are idiots. It is common sense.
Correct me if I am wrong, shouldn't they just wait until a dev gets a hold of the update...and updates their rom with the newest release?
Couldn't answer that straight forward myself but that would be my guess as well.

Yeah. But the bigger issue is that soon S4's will start shipping with the new aboot. Then there will be a huge chunk of S4 owners who will never be able to flash recoveries, roms, or kernels.

I posted the "wiki" link in a couple of threads already earlier (one of them was the "Loki discussion thread") to help make people aware of the issue. It was also discussed when the "new update" was announced. The problem is that people will still not read and install it anyway. But, maybe this will help a few more people.

That's why I made this thread. I as well posted in a couple of those threads only to get forced into the dust by people still trying to update... I hope this helps get the point across and get the word out.

No dis-respect but I strongly enourage to use the search function of the site, just friendly advice before a real developer tears you a new one XD
In the mean time, yes, you can protect yourself by rooting and disabling to update .apks'.
I have seen a lot of mixed info. Some say it wont auto update, others say it will. Best guess is AT&T will indeed try to force push the update.

No dis-respect taken you are correct that I should have looked harder as I remember tons of threads about it when the first OTA came, it is pretty annoying to do this with the app though lol. Thank you for the root/disable tip.

yep, this is why most phones i bought were unlocked; should have done it again
I only ever buy my phones after looking at XDA to see how the dev community is, if a phone has no way to flash custom roms and kernels theres no chance in hell I buy it. So far have yet to be burned =)

You wont get burned as long as you don't officially patch up. Its future S4 buyers that will get massively boned once they realize they are stuck until a new bootloader unlock/bypass is found.
The rest of us in the know only have to worry about lack of development support once this patch comes full force.

Personally I hate TW, so the minute i got the phone I got rid of that and put an AOSP rom on the phone (Currently putting the latest PAC Rom nightly on lol) but yea future S4 users will be screwed if the new patched aboot doesnt allow for some kind of exploit...Which in turn hurts future development on the device...the only good thing is that the snapdragon variants of the S4 are all identical basically, as such international roms work on our device, just need to flash a device specific kernel/libs =)
I froze At&t software update v42.1.1303.5.1 hopefully that is all that is needed.
