[Q] CWM backup - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
Few days ago my friend gave me used I5800 for my daughter, so I was exploring this forum to find more about custom ROMs etc. I succesfully instaled several ROMs to find one which will be suitable for her. In meantime I flashed kernel G3Mode v.2.5 with CWM 5.0.28. I did few backups but after restoring I discovered that CWM only did backup for system partition but without internal partition ??? I am using same version od CWM for my LG Optimus 2x and when I do backup it saves both system and data partition? Can someone help me with this issue? Now, after restore I must install TB again and do restore apps from TB?
Thank you in advance!
Cheers

Normally it should do backup of everything. If you have backup via TB you can install it again and restore removed Apps.

[Q] CWM didn't backup apps/user data?

This is the 2nd time I've run into a problem with CWM (first time was a checksum error but found a fix for it.)
Was running a rom (eagleblood) and decided to do a backup in clockwork before flashing a different rom (bionix.) Backup completed, factory reset/wiped everything, flashed rom, and after booting in realized I had google auth and another authenticator app set up on the old rom. Went back into CWM to restore what I just backed up and account info/apps/media files are gone. Luckily, I have an older backup from September that I can use to get to my authenticator apps but unfortunately still have lost what was added to my phone recently.
Question: Is my backup completely fubar? Has anyone run into something similar that could point me to a fix? I still have access to the backups.

Are you using Titanium Backup for backing up your apps/data? You might wanna look into that, its an easy great app.
I have no recent titanium backups. This is a nandroid backup that didn't backup. First I've ever seen.

That sucks man, I always batch a Titanium Backup to dropbox before thinking about a nand backup. It is a great precaution for the amount of tinkering we all do.
Titanium backup does boot/system/cache/etc. ?

No, it does user apps, system apps, and all their data. Titanium Backup is a must have app for rom flashers. A nandroid is okay to keep for emergencies, but for your apps and data, Titanium Backup is a must.

so do I just have to accept that bad nandroid backups happen?

If I make a backup of my ROM before i root etc. is it possible to go back to my standard ROM if i don't like the ROM i installed?
Thanks!

i backed up with clockworkmod
Sorry i ment i Backed up origionaly with titanium Backup , i restored this with CWM

[Q] Restore a backup in CWM

Hi.
I want to know if i need to wipe things in CWM before restoring a backup previously made ? Or I can directly restore a backup ?!
Thanks !
When you restore a backup is for a few reasons. When an upgrade has not gone well, a bad root has not gone well for you. Have lost major stuff. So no need for a wipe the restore wipe and set back.
Okay thanks, Because i just tried ICS and HTC Sense 4 on my Desire, but i want to recover all my files. So i backuped. That's why i ask this question.
Did u restore!?

you dont need to wipe things in order to restore form CWM. It will restore your previous version of rom including your files.

Can you backup your applications from recovery?

Hey guys...
I have been using EHNDROIX custom rom for quite some time. For no apparent reason now when I try to boot my phone it freezes on the logo screen. I tried installing newest or oldest updates, or even other custom roms but I still face the same problem. I was wondering if there is a way to bypass that problem without losing my applications. Do you have any suggestions on what to try apart from wiping cache, dalvik cache and fixing permissions (which I've already tried)? Can I backup my applications from recovery before wiping data which I suppose will fix the problem?
Titanium bkp will let you restore app data from a cwm backup (may only be a pro option)

Yes, unless it was recently added to free but 5.99 is a small price for all the headache it will save you in the long run

You can wipe data without losing your applications. You would have had to run a titanium backup before you got stuck in your bootloop scenario. TB pro is the best $6 I have spent on the market.

Hi,
Titanium backup can restore apps from cwm backups.
But also, if your using the test cwm recovery (version 6.0 or above I think) and you will be flashing the same rom again, you can go to recovery, select advance restore, select your cwm backup you made earlier, and select "restore data only"
That will restore all your data you had on the phone, like apps, app data, call logs, ect.
But you should really be on the same rom that you made the backup of to do this, or else it can cause more boot loops.
Cheers

I restored only data using cwm recovery advanced restore on MIUI ROM 4.1.X.( android version 4.2.2)
After restoring everything was Force closing....
The data was of AOSP Rom 4.2.1.
Any solution?

Hi Bro, I've switched to various ROM's of different bases (4.2 or 4.1) numerous times and will tell you how to restore your data.
Take a Nandroid backup. After installing your new ROM, Restore your apps, games from Titanium Backup using 'Extract from Nandroid Backup' Option. I'm using this method and there are no FC's whatsoever.
Just make sure you don't restore any system app or data because it will most probably create a soft brick or bootloop issue.
