[Q] Restore a backup in CWM - General Questions and Answers

Hi.
I want to know if i need to wipe things in CWM before restoring a backup previously made ? Or I can directly restore a backup ?!
Thanks !

When you restore a backup is for a few reasons. When an upgrade has not gone well, a bad root has not gone well for you. Have lost major stuff. So no need for a wipe the restore wipe and set back.

Okay thanks, Because i just tried ICS and HTC Sense 4 on my Desire, but i want to recover all my files. So i backuped. That's why i ask this question.

Did u restore!?

you dont need to wipe things in order to restore form CWM. It will restore your previous version of rom including your files.

that's the point of the backup... just wipe things before installing the backup.
yea its not a bad a idea to do the backup protect u from a bad flash and as he said thats why the option there 8)
To better answer your question: restoring from a backup restores EVERYTHING to that EXACT state your phone was when you initially did your backup.
So it's not bad, and actually very good . I have 5 different ROM backups on my sd card.
Rom Factory
You can also use Rom Factory and create your own rom. This will not create a total backup of your phone, just the required folders for the operating system.

Back up questions

1. If I backup the existing Rom from Rom manager or titanium backup, is it the same thing?
2. If I backup once is it needed to back up every time I change room, or I can use only one backup?
Thanks

They're different. ROM Manager is the Recovery Backup i.e. of your entire internal memory whereas Titanium just does a back up of apps.
Backup your ROM with ROM Manager each time you flash something and when you change ROM use Titanium and ROM Manager.
I use 4 ext recovery to back up it'soooo easy and it works wonderfully! I got in a pinch the other day and it was sooo easy to restore my old rom from 4ext back up! I just go into recovery manage backups and from there you can create a new back up or restore. If your restoring make sure to do full wipe ok. But you might try 4ext. I really love it ! It's so easy to use! Easy is good! You might want to give it a try . I use 4ext touch. Is absolutely wonderful!

Yes 4EXT is a very nice recovery, but when restoring from a NANDroid backup there is really no need to do any wipes. If you watch as $EXT or any other recovery restores from a backup, it does a wipe of each partion before it restores that partion and it also wipes the both delvick cache and cache before restoring them.
Thanks I didn't know that I've been wiping good to know

restoring from a backup

Im a little ashamed but I have never restored from a backup before in recovery. Do you have to wipe and all that prior to restoring or just hit restore?

I believe the restore wipes automatically...I could be wrong though. I haven't had to restore a rom in months.
It does. Restore formats the partitions then restores to them.
restoring stock rom without backup
Speaking of restoring through recovery, Is it possible to restore my phone to stock rom without the back up? If not, then RUU to stock 1.85 is the only way right? I installed a new rom yesterday, and I decided to wipe everything including SD so I basically erased my stock rom backup.

The best thing for you to do now is restore via the RUU to stock.
Once you have that done you can go ahead and flash other ROM's
Good Luck!:good:

NANDROID restore

quck and easy one, when doing a nandroid restore do i need to wipe all partitions or just go ahead and do it?
Yes I Always wipe before restore . Also wipe cash and dalvik, I also factory reset and stay in recovery upon completion to restore . Then reboot. This gives a clean installation. You're making sure the old Rom is gone before restoring. Hope this helps. If I'm in doubt I always wipe. Just to be safe. Remember even though is a backup, your still coming from a different Rom. So you will want a clean installation before restoring. I do my restorations this way and had never had a problem.

No. It does that on it's own.
What you are supposed to do though, is search before posting a new thread.

Hi,
No need to wipe before restore.
The whole point of a nandroid is to wipe what's currently there and restore the backup you made. Wiping before restoring is wasted time/power/flash writing.

Since you seem to have got your issue solved (in another thread), please add [SOLVED] to your title, along with a brief description of how you did it in your post. :good:
