When in the browser, you can use the quick search key in 2 ways:
1. Tap it once and it becomes a URL search - doing autocomplete via google for the uRL you want
2. Tap it a second time and it becomes the Quick Search Box that searches your local stuff and google
The only odd behavior is going from the URL search to the Quick Search the keyboard stays on the URL keyboard so you have to hit the 123 key to get your space bar.

.... and, if you HOLD the search button, you can do voice recognition for searching and some other functions -- i.e., "call jane doe" or "email john smith", things like that. Quite cool! Not sure of all the possibilities there yet.

That doesn't work for me. Do I need to install something to enable it to accept commands? Like Voice Commander? In fact, the only thing the search button will search is the web.... whether I type it or speak it. I've enabled the search phone settings in settings/search menu. Something's screwy with my phone.

When you hold the search button down, the little "Speak Now" pop-up doesn't even appear? Or, is it there but nothing seems to work?
UPDATE: Also, it seems that only "call ..." works, I can't get "email" or "text" to work -- but then again, since you really need the keyboard for those functions, maybe that's why?

It pops up, but the only search results are from the web. It doesn't look for anything on my phone, and it never accepts commands like "call Bob."

I could not get "call (name)" to work. I tried adding the name to my Gmail contacts, but it still doesn't work. Like dc41, it dumps me to Google's web search. Any tips for this?
I also found out that you can say "dial (1-800-xxx-xxxx)" in Android, but I couldn't get that to work either.
"navigate to (place)" and "map of (place)" works for me though.
CALL (NAME)
Okay, I think I understand now...
For "call (name)" to work, you'll need to login to your Gmail account via your computer's browser, click Contacts, then Add.
If it's already in "All Contacts," but not "My Contacts," you'll need to use the "Move To My Contacts" button. I think this was my problem - anything I added in Android's phonebook didn't get moved into My Contacts in Gmail.com.
Some things are not shown in Android's browser when viewing Gmail, so do use your computer.
That's basically it.
I've found two more keyboard issues, and I'd like someone else to try to replicate them see if they have the same issue.
1) In the Youtube app: when you click the search button (magnifying glass keyboard button) you can type in your search with no problem, but if you touch the screen in the search field, the space bar will not work while typing in a search query.
2) In Google Maps the magnifying glass keyboard button will not bring up the search prompt. You can touch the search field and enter a query with the keyboard with no issues, but the keyboard button will not activate the search field.
Does anyone else have these issues? I have installed all OTA updates, including the one for the keyboard.
1) can't replicate this fault on mine. If I touch the search area, the space bar still works
2) yes, I have the same issue

yes - I see the same behaviour. Pressing the space bar seems to scroll the videos on the right (much in the same way that it scrolls the forum page down in the browser).
Other quirks
Some things I find annoying:
Ctrl+arrow key doesn't move to next word
Ctrl+Shift+arrow key doesn't select text
Ctrl+End(or Home)+arrow key doesn't go to end or beginning of document.
Are there more keyboard combinations we are used to that doesn't work?
Hi all,
Just did the OTA update for 4.1.1 and I'm eager to try Google now, but I cannot seem to get to the main screen. What I mean is that if I swipe up from the softkeys and bring up google now (or by any other method), the main screen appears for a second, then jumps to the search screen. The option to opt-in and use Google Now does not appear at all and there is no response to pressing the menu button when I am on the google now main screen.
Any ideas on why this is happening?
Thanks!
For me the main screen is just the one when I press the "Search" soft key when I am at home screen, or the search bar at the top of the home screen.
You have to activate/opt-in by hitting Search Key>Menu button>settings. It's the first item to select in the settings.
Thanks for the feedback.
I took some screenshots to clarify my issue:
When I get to the google now home screen by either hitting the search key or the top search bar, it looks like this: db.tt/9jaob1Rv (sorry I cant directly post pictures yet, add the http in front)
At that page, the menu button does nothing until the screen changes to look like this: db.tt/TKsdxrBM (again, put the httpin front)
When I click the setting screen, I get these options with no mention of Google Now: db.tt/Mf4jqMvM (again, put the http in front)
Any ideas?
Thanks
That's odd. Could it be because you're in Canada? It might be a regional thing. I wish I knew how to help, but that's the only thing I can think of. I don't see why you wouldn't get GN though since it's available in a ton of languages.
Are you using a gmail.com account as your main account?

You sir are a genius! I usually use my university address because it uses the gmail engine but when I added a gmail account, it gave me the option to use google now.
Thanks to everyone that helped!
Ok so I'm probably being dense and missing something obvious but I have no Google Now on my N5. I've got the 'Ok Google' Voice activation working by selecting English US in the voice search settings. But I cannot swipe left on the home screen and if I click the search bar it just brings up the search box with my search history.
Edit: Found it - Touch and hold on the home screen > settings > turn on google now

You have turned google now off, to turn it back on, press and hold, on home screen, and go to settings, and select google now, then you can switch it back on from there.
