[Q] Google Now - UK - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I'm probably being dense and missing something obvious but I have no Google Now on my N5. I've got the 'Ok Google' Voice activation working by selecting English US in the voice search settings. But I cannot swipe left on the home screen and if I click the search bar it just brings up the search box with my search history.
Edit: Found it - Touch and hold on the home screen > settings > turn on google now

You have turned google now off, to turn it back on, press and hold, on home screen, and go to settings, and select google now, then you can switch it back on from there.

Google Now main screen

Hi all,
Just did the OTA update for 4.1.1 and I'm eager to try Google now, but I cannot seem to get to the main screen. What I mean is that if I swipe up from the softkeys and bring up google now (or by any other method), the main screen appears for a second, then jumps to the search screen. The option to opt-in and use Google Now does not appear at all and there is no response to pressing the menu button when I am on the google now main screen.
Any ideas on why this is happening?
Thanks!
For me the main screen is just the one when I press the "Search" soft key when I am at home screen, or the search bar at the top of the home screen.
You have to activate/opt-in by hitting Search Key>Menu button>settings. It's the first item to select in the settings.
Thanks for the feedback.
I took some screenshots to clarify my issue:
When I get to the google now home screen by either hitting the search key or the top search bar, it looks like this: db.tt/9jaob1Rv (sorry I cant directly post pictures yet, add the http in front)
At that page, the menu button does nothing until the screen changes to look like this: db.tt/TKsdxrBM (again, put the httpin front)
When I click the setting screen, I get these options with no mention of Google Now: db.tt/Mf4jqMvM (again, put the http in front)
Any ideas?
Thanks
That's odd. Could it be because you're in Canada? It might be a regional thing. I wish I knew how to help, but that's the only thing I can think of. I don't see why you wouldn't get GN though since it's available in a ton of languages.

You sir are a genius! I usually use my university address because it uses the gmail engine but when I added a gmail account, it gave me the option to use google now.
Thanks to everyone that helped!

[Q] two questions one thread

only thing that catches my eye from the kitkat launcher is the google search bar on screen (SAY OK GOOGLE) will that be later implemented into a zip for other launchers? i can always just click on the mic but saying that makes me a cool alley cat .
how come some nexus files/zips are able to be flash or install into our verizon gs3 without messing nothing up? time to time i check out there theme sections but dont wanna flash anything cuz im afraid it might brick my fone since its not a d2vzw file .
Chances are you won't see OK Google coming to other launchers from what I've read. Apparently Google made that and the Google now screen you can swipe to proprietary code.
As to the other, it really just depends. If it's just an app or theme you'd see mixed results. Just make sure you're making backups. If it's a rom or kernel or something, stay away.

You can have that same launcher, it is called the Google Experience Launcher, and is located Here. You no longer need the Google Search App from that page, as long as the Google Search App on your device is up to date. You also have the option of a modified version in the Play Store called KitKat Launcher+, HERE
When I install the GEL on stock 4.1.2, after pressing the home button, I was given the option to select what launcher I used. For some reason when I installed it on stock 4.3, I was not given that option, and had to go into the application manager to fix it.
Press the menu key, and select "Settings"
Press "Application Manager"
Slide over to the "All" tab
Scroll down to "TouchWiz Home"
Select "Clear defaults" under the "Launch by default heading"
Now when you press the home key, you will be given the option to select what launcher you want to use
When you first get into the launcher, you will notice that the microphone in the search bar is hollow, this means that the "Ok Google" function is not currently working. To get this to work, you need to
Press the menu key
You will see three options on the bottom of the screen "WALLPAPERS" "WIDGETS" "SETTINGS"
Select the "SETTINGS" tab
Select the "Voice" menu
Select the "Offline speech recognition"
Select the "ALL" tab
Press the English (US)
Press "OK"
Select the "AUTO-UPDATE" tab
I selected the second option, because I am never on Wi-Fi, you can leave it on Wi-Fi only if you are always on it
Select the "INSTALLED" tab
Press "English (US)
Press "Download"
When it is done downloading, the microphone in the search bar should be filled in, and you can now say "OK Google" to activate it.
As for your other question, it all depends on what the files are. If it is a system or framework file it most likely can't be flashed, someone might be able to port it over to work.

Google now swipe up not working in Android 6.0

Has anyone else run into this? When I swipe up from the home button anywhere on the device, the shortcut for google now isn't working. I've been seeing this happen since Dev Preview 3 and now in the official release.

If I'm not mistaken "On Tap" has replaced the swipe up motion on Android 6.0. So have to hold the home button

That isn't an option anymore, you have to launch "On Tap" then you will notice the google logo you can touch that and it will take you to google now
Ron Amadeo pointed it out here: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/android-6-0-marshmallow-thoroughly-reviewed/3/
One of the downsides to Google Now on Tap is that the opening gesture—long pressing the home screen—used to belong to Google Now. There's no way to quickly open Google Now from any screen anymore. You have to go to the home screen and swipe left. The gesture also once allowed you to have a third-party home screen and still easily access Google Now, but you can't do that anymore, either. One option is to disable Now on Tap completely, and then the old Google Now gesture will work.

I hate this new feature, I want "swipe up" back . I used before swipe up to lock phone and hibernate apps (greenify ). Now I need to use again button. So oldscool
Not sure if this is related but when I say "OK Google" from the home screen, Google Now appears instead of the voice input. Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks

And I'm hating every minute of it. I like to read the stories and open hidden apps from the google now and is annoying to do it that way. I guess that in their perfect universe everyone uses the google now launcher and it had no utility...
I'm glad I'm not the only one that hates it

It's also kinda wonky for me because I'm using Nova Launcher. I've compared by switching to the Google Now launcher and the long press home actions act differently. Sometimes on Nova it's smooth but on the home page, it just kinda freaks out and either gives you options or just goes directly to my Google Now cards. I also preferred that swipe up action, seemed easier and made more sense.
I also liked the swipe up gesture for Google Now. I wonder if custom ROM's that allow customization of the swipe up short cuts will still have it in their builds.

I can't get down with the swipe to the left for now and love Nova launcher. For a few minutes after setting it up I was going crazy trying to figure out why swipe up wasn't working.

Google assistant with gestures

Hi , did anyone figure out how to get google assistant with gestures or with another shortcut?
Have not figured it out either. Had to switch to navigation buttons, setup google-assistant and go back to gestures. That way i can still trigger it by voice.
a long press on the fingerprint scanner would be an obvious choice for invokining a Google assistant, Is that something can be added with a 3rd party app.?

I haven't received the Phone yet but i can recommend Button Mapper for you to try.
let us know if you try that please =)
I'm using Nova and mapped swipe up with assistant. works great
Button Mapper does not register back fingerprint reader touch as an event it can act on.
Restorted to swipe up with Nova.. I just need to rewire my brain to use it instead of long press. I wish Nova allowed a long press on the docker app shelf icon could be assigned as the gesture. It would be a bit better.

Steps :
1. Download Google Assistant from Play store
2. Update your One plus Launcher
3. Open Shelf
4. Toolbox
5. Add new tool.
6. Click on Assistant
7. Select Application [Shortcuts not required]
8. Save
You will see a assistant button in shelf, just click assistant will be open.
Hi guys, I used Button Mapper to map a double tap of the down volume button to Google Assistant and a double tap of the up volume button to invoke split screen, works great without interfering with the normal use of the volume buttons. Only thing I've noticed is I'm not seeing the "What's on my screen?" button but that must be something to do with Assistant...
Edit: Turned the nav bar on to check, when I open assistant with a long press of home I get the what's on my screen option, but not when I open it with the double tap from volume button, bizarre!

That was exactly what i was mean... The op wants to know if there's another way to activate voice assistant with gestures... What i want to say is that "Ok google" is working perfectly so there's no need to shortcut or other things.. :good:
I really don't know how but I have opened Google Assistant a few times now with gestures activated. I really want to know how. Does anyone have any idea how?
I just say "hey google...set my alarm etc"
Works fine, i think maybe people forget they can trigger it with their voice - im really enjoying gestures and dont think i could go back, enjoying more screen real estate too.
Using voice does not allow for accessing the "whats on my screen" button
After removing Google app from system, I lost the access to hotword activation. Assistant won't come up even after all settings I did. Finally ended up with Nova Launcher gestures. Two finger swipe down for assistant (installed assistant app separately for it)

Not for me for some reason. Keeps saying it doesn't recognize my voice when music is playing. Normally, Google stops music to take over the microphone and do that familiar beep, but Spotify just keeps playing and no beep comes. Don't know why.
Hey everyone, so if you have root, you can use gravitybox to map the assistant app to the fingerprint scanner. I've got mine set up this way and it's been working well.
If you use Button Mapper, instead of choosing Assistant there's an option for Now on Tap. This gives the 'what's on my screen' option when Assistant pops up
