Pretty scared on my end. This seems like the most informative video. I've read through some threads but I'm not too well versed on all the different things involved in rooting/unlocking this guy. First step is to download the ADB Tool V3 so I can push the unlock tool onto my device. Is this the right way to start the process? Thanks in advance!

If you want to unlock, you need to go Asus website and download the Asus unlock tool v7. You need to intall it on your tab and click to open the app. It will walk you through the whole press. It is very easy and simple. That was how I unlocked my device.. . I am very sure there are different ways to unlock but using Asus app is probably the safer way.. :fingers-crossed: Good luck.

That video is way outdated. Do not follow it.
The only way to unlock is using the Asus unlock tool.

Thanks! I will redirect my reading towards that link. Thread is packed with info that I need woot woot!
Just two more questions sorry.
1) What is the order I need to follow? Follow the root process THEN do the unlock process on that thread? I've read through 10 pages and there is nothing to specify that.
2) Planning to install Cromi. After successful root and unlock, do I need to upgrade to the bootloader necessary from what I understand then flash the rom?
* this one on the Cromi thread: 10.6.1.14.8 US Bootloader and TWRP 2.5.0.0 DOWNLOAD 2
I apologize if this should be common knowledge but I just want to make sure. Thank you for your time!

The main issue you have is you need to get twrp onto your device. To do this you must unlock, rooting will not help.
Once unlocked you could root, then use goo manager from the store to flash twrp and then follow the thread you linked or you could flash twrp over fastboot as also detailed there. I also updated an automated twrp recovery installer from a PC in that thread as well.

So I recently got a Xoom and would like to root it. I can easily search through forums and follow instructions, but I want to be sure on what I have to do. I've rooted and flashed several Android devices already, so I'm no newbie, but once I bricked an Atrix so since then I've always been super cautious.
So now.. how do I root and install CWM on the Xoom? It's on 4.0.4 OTA.
Do I have to unlock the bootloader first?
Specific references to threads and step by step instructions preferred. Thank you!

Yes, you will have to unlock first. There's a bit to set up first, but if you read the instructions and get everything you need set up in one place it's pretty easy. Also, it's actually hard to really brick a Xoom. A few have managed but it's not easy.
Try this guide...everything should still work fine, and it explains a lot

Hello Everyone im new to the boards here
I'm Trying to root my Friends Xoom for him. He told me he already started the process and unlocked stuff but cant flash anything or succesfully root. I dont know what he actually did and to be honest neither does he..... * put a gun in my mouth haha*
So my question is can i just follow the guide posted and start from the very first step and redo everything and still be ok ?? He has it updated to OTA ICS 4.0.4 I found several guides for 4.0.3 but im not sure if those instructions would still work if anyone could clarify this for me i'd greatly appreciate it

I also had a problem after unlocking. It unlocked fine, but then I couldn't flash CWM through fastboot. My problem was the Application Variable thing, I assume. What I did was go to the platform tools folder (which for me was C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools ). I held shift and right clicked Platform Tools, then pressed "open command window here" and then I flashed CWM through fastboot in that window. Just make sure the CWM image is in the Platform Tools folder, along with fastboot.exe.
If you have any issues with that, PM me and I'll try to help.
omg Frozen thank you so most for that post i literally had the same problem CWM would not flash till i did exactly what you said in the last post thank you soo much greatly appreciated
There is one VERY important piece that is left out of most threads.
The newest Xooms that were release overwrite CWM files upon reboot unless you take specific steps to make sure it doesn't... e.g.
have the update.zip you want to use preloaded on the sdcard via pc
or
use a usb with a otg and a version of CWM that can apply update.zip from the USB drive.
Also beware of threads that dont mention what version of the OS they are for. For example its very easy to root your device, but it be on an on 3.x OS and then the OS will update it to 4.04 on the next boot cycle, and wont give you a chance to pick your ROM update. As a result your device is not rooted at this point, and CWM is not installed because you didnt have root in time to move these files:
adb shell mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p.old /system/recovery-from-boot.p
adb shell mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.old /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
while in root.
Really sucks.
So in a nutshell those with the latest Xoom tablets that were released, must make sure you find a update.zip that is compatible with ICS 4.04 and then get it to your SDCARD or USB Drive via any method possible - and then flash the right CWM that supports what you want to do, then catch that as it reboots the very first time but pushing the down button and then up button of the volume controls, and then you can install the root (update.zip).... then if all is well you will be able to boot normally, and then go back and get into CWM and install the ROM of your delight.
Experts feel free to chime in so I don't mislead anyone. I wouldn't follow the above advice until an expert puts their AOK on it.

I don't mean to be a **** either, but you haven't really posted much info in the thread, there are just place holders for info to follow. The thread title is misleading as I thought someone had figured out how to un-root the device.
It would seem to me that if you are going to post a thread with HOWTO in the title, there should be a HOWTO in here.
Sent from my brain to my hand to XDA
Unrooting is actually pretty simple, basically you need to remove 'su' and clean your system from things like BusyBox (if installed) from /system/bin/ or xbin and remove Superuser.apk.
But I agree that this thread is just no good at this point.
how would you go about removing SU and BusyBox etc, as i need to root my device to back up a faulty unit, then unroot to send it back for replacement. could you explain a bit more?
This thread is now closed:
1st) there is already a sticky thread here with these informations.
2nd) we do not allow "coming soon" threads.
Updated the OP with my tutorials! To start with, I've got rooting, unlocking, and flashing recovery. That should get you guys going. I'll have more soon.
I cant get the root method to work. I have a problem were even though the drivers are installed when i plug it in it says error installing drivers. then in "other Devices" in device manager it pops up with yellow triangle. But in "portable devices" it shows the tablet there. I have tried uninstalling the other devices version and checking drivers on the one located in portable devices and vice versa with no luck. Any suggestions?
So unlocking the bootloader just allows you to install custom ROMS?
And rooting alows you to gain root access but do you need to unlock bootloader before you can root. Or can you just have the rooted kernel only and not bothering unlocking boot loader and staying on stock?
If you want to unlock bootloader and install custom rom do you have to be rooted or I guess custom rom will already included a rooted kernel?
Thanks!

The first part is correct. As to the second:
- you don't need to unlock bootloader before rooting, although you need to root to make use of an unlocked bootloader unless you intend to flash recovery through adb (I'm not sure if it works on the Infinity this way)
- you're not rooting the kernel, the kernel remains the same, all Linux/Android kernels have to allow root access, it's just that in stock firmware there is no "su" and rooting pushes it to your /system partition along with installing Superuser.apk (this one goes to data partition, as do other apps)
So basically you need to be rooted and unlocked to install custom ROM, but flashing any ROM or firmware will entirely or partially wipe your /system partition, where "su" is stored (nothing to do with the kernel). So you need to flash recovery from stock rooted ROM (stock firmware) and then most ROMs will have "su" included, so that you won't have to go through rooting process all over again with every ROM.
Hope this answers your doubts.

Let me see if I can organize things a bit as I think you might be a bit confused with lingo and operation.
Your system has basically 3 subsystems for you to worry about: Bootloader, Firmware/ROM, Custom Recovery. The Bootloader is the first thing that runs and controls access to the other 2 subsystems. If you want to change either of those subsystems, the bootloader has to allow it. Making the bootloader allow it is called "unlocking". When the bootloader transfers the processing to the Firmware/ROM, you can then run applications. Some applications require access to particular system resources that, by default, they don't have permission to and you don't have the ability to give that permission to them. For you to be able to give them that permission is called "rooting". When you "get root", you can give them this permission they require. This allows the system to do things that it normally couldn't do because resources are now available that weren't before.
So Bootloader controls how the Firmware/ROM and custom recovery work and "Root" controls what types of permissions that the system applications have access to.
Now, re-read what d14b0ll0s said as it is important. Hopefully, this information should get you in the right mindset.
I've run this rooting tool several times and I get zeros in the proper places, indicating that I have root, but after the last reboot, there is no root. What am I doing wrong?
I received the 26 update OTA. Could that be why I can't get root? is there any remedy?
Hi all,
I've just recently purchased a 16gig S3 and am wanting to root just so I can move some of the larger apps (certain games) off to the SDCard. Now, I've been doing some reading about unlocking the bootloader, rooting, etc. - do I have to unlock the bootloader to root the phone? Also, if I just root the phone (if it's possible) do I have to unroot it in order to get OTA updates? (I've been confused on that last question as some posts have talked about needing to unroot/flash back to stock and some have implied that one doesn't need to on a basic rooted phone).
I have no plans on installing custom roms at this point, just use some apps that require higher level privileged access; I just want to make sure I understand what I'm getting involved with here and what I may need to do in order to deal with future OTA updates.
Hi, Here's the breakdown as I understand it. Anyone else feel free to add or correct so I learn too. You can root your phone and keep the bootloader locked. Unlocking the bootloader would be a second step if you want to flash custom roms. If you are stock and rooted you could still receive an OTA from verizon, but this could cause you to lose root. Custom ROMs are tweaked so that you will still have root access. Even if you wanted to use a totally stock rom, it's best to wait for the devs to get a hold of it and flash it yourself so you don't lose root. There is no guarantee that devs will be able to root or unlock the bootloader on future OTA's that come from verizon.
That pretty much sums it up !

question about rooting
Not sure if this will be an easy question for anyone to answer or a difficult one but I am new to the S3, I had a thunderbolt before that was rooted for me by somebody else so this is my first attempt on my own to root a phone, and I have followed all the steps word for word in this guide --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875914&nocache=1 but when I get to the point where it asks you to open e-z unlock and hit unlock when the app opens "Fail! you're not rooted! View Noxious Ninja's wonderful rooting tool and guide." I have followed that guide and I followed the steps in that rooting tool verbatim but I'm still running into this issue. If anyone can help me out with this I'd appreciate it greatly. Do I need to roll back to a previous OS first in order to make this work? Right now I'm on 4.1 (forgive me if that is the reason this isn't working, I am new to this) so any help with my stupid questions will be greatly, greatly appreciated!

So I have started to follow the steps in that guide and I've got all the necessary files downloaded from the article. However I'm now having issues with Odin. I've been trying to flash the VRALEC bootchain and it keeps telling me that it has failed. I'm putting it into the PDA section, I've left Auto-reboot and F. Reset Time checked, and hit start. What am I doing wrong? Again, forgive me if this comes across as a stupid question.

Hi everyone
First off I would like to thank everyone who contributes on this board, I have been lurking for quite awhile even though I dont have any android devices, the reading is very interesting.
I have just got my first android device today delivered from BH Photo (I am in Australia) and have charged and powered it up. I have been reading on the forums about rooting and then unlocking. The android version appears to be 4.0.3 (ICS).
My questions are these:
Should I root this device and unlock the bootloader with ICS, then install TWRP and make a backup of it. Once this is done then update to JB? The firmware of the tablet is (I think this is right) IM74K:US_epad_9.4.5.26-20120720 and the kernel is 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1
or
Update the device to JB then root it, but Im a bit confused with the unlocking part here what program is used to unlock the bootloader? Is it the Asus one? Also with rooting programs which one is more commonly used for both ICS and JB? Can I apply a manual update of JB using the Ausrtalian version instead of the US one.
Sorry for all the noob questions. I have read the index and after reading it still had some questions.
Thank you for your time

Welcome to the Community!
There are a few on-going threads regarding this same topic. You might want to read those and make sure you understand the lingo/jargon being used (like: fastboot, bootloader, Recovery, adb. etc) as well as what it's for before you start your hacking.
Some things to keep in mind
Currently to have Root access in JB, you need to get root in ICS then use OTA Keeper to maintain Root for JB update.
The Bootloader unlocker tool is from ASUS and needs to communicate with ASUS servers for it to unlock.
Unlocking the bootloader will void your warrenty. Make sure you have a good device before you do it.
You have a version of tablet (9.4.5.26) that is able to use NVFlash that can help recover your tablet during a soft brick.
You should use an update that is appropriate for your device. If it comes with US, stay with US. Installing an update for a different region might not cause problems but there is no guarantee. Best to avoid the possibility by staying with the region it comes with.
For some reading material, I think that my blog post might help give you some additional details. However, I highly suggest that it be used for research only until you are aware of exactly what you are trying to accomplish. Remember to ask questions if things are confusing or if you are wondering what needs to be done next. 'Tis better to ask and be delayed than to be over-eager and bricked.
Hope this helps you during your first steps of XDA Android hacking!
I just got my TF700 last week and I wanted cleanrom on it and this is the order of stuff I did:
1. Unlocked bootloader
2. Nvflash setup
3. Installed TWRP
4. Flashed official Asus update
5. I lost TWRP so I installed it again
6. Flashed cleanrom
Probably not the most efficient way, but it was easy to do and didn't take too long.

It's the most efficient way.
I have nothing to add except for the remark that NvFlash is key -- GET IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
I'm not even kidding here. It gives you 100% flexibility in doing whatever you wish (up- as well as downgrading, even the bootloader!) and provides a key benefit in recovering your device when that whale-sized piece of excrement hits the large ventilator running at top speed.
Thanks to everyone that has replied to my post. I have successfully rooted the tablet and unlocked the bootloader. Before I do anything else Im going to run NVflash and back it up. I have a quick question though. I have download NVFlash to my computer and extracted it. Do I need to copy it across to the tablet and then enter fastboot? I havent got an extenal sd card will it save the images to the tablet's hard drive?
Cheers

i followed this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3ypzUaKxvo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
i watched it before i actually did it once or twice to make sure i know what to do. you don't need an external sd card. following the fastboot steps will pull the files that you need onto the internal one in a folder
Last night I used NVFlash to make backup of the tablet. A big thank you to alienedd as I followed his blog and also the guide from androidmobi team and managed to get the img files done. Is there anyway to test bar for wiping the tablet?
Now all I have left to do is install OTA RootKeeper and TWRP, back up the existing tablet and then flash a custom ROM (Im thinking cleanrom)
You don't need OTA Rootkeeper anymore because you have unlocked you're bootloader. And custom roms like Cleanrom are already pre-rooted so after flashing the cleanrom you will have root anyway.
I have looked at a number of tools to root a mytouch slide and can't seem to find one that has straight forward instructions. In addition, I'm not sure where to download ROM or if I even need to. I'm just trying to get root access so I can remove some pre-installed apps and run some apps that need root access. I know a lot about computers and have worked as a network analyst but mobile phones seems to be a whole different world. If anyone knows of a safe kit with step-by-step instructions, i would greatly appreciate you helping me out.
Thanks in advance!

I have used this toolkit to unlock a few bootloaders and flash recoveries. If you are on the HBOOT 1.45.0013 and use this you will still be S-ON locked. You can flash roms but with the extra step of flashing the boot.img you extract from the ROM, through this toolkit. if you are on the earlier HBOOT look into REVOLUTIONARY unlocking your bootloader for an easy S-OFF unlock...
or if you're on HBOOT 1.45.0013 feel like having some fun look into juopunutbear's wire trick S-OFF method.
The first step is unlocking your bootloader to flash a recovery to use to flash ROMs, after that it gets simple.
What a joke... I've never seen such confusing ways to root a phone.
I tried 3 or 4 different ways, they all get hung up at one step or another.
You would think someone on this site could come up with a step by step way, WITH CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS on how do it!!!
And god help if your a mac user, you are the scum of the earth.

Agreed, I wanted to go S-OFF to avoid the extra step. I was a little leery on the wire trick, but after I read thru it a few times, I felt confident it would be hard to screw up. The hardest part was the timing.
I followed the instructions EXACTLY as posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801106
Have now followed this successfully to unlock 2 separate fully stock MT4GS's. Try not to be a **** around here and you'll go far and get lots of help. If you're following either of those processes and get stuck on a step stop and ask for help and I'm sure you'll get helpful useful responses, but don't act like everyone here is out to get you, it's far from that. And don't expect someone to hold your hand thru every step of the way either, we're all adults (I think) lets try to act like it.
root only
hello. i DONT NEED all that other stuff! I JUST WANT SIMPLE ROOT! IM NOT DOING ANY CUSTOMS ROMS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT! HOW IS THIS ACHIEVED?
P.S. i read about 10 pages and still all i heard was the other stuff. (custom roms this customs that.)

Just go to the development forum, look at the pinned thread at the top "how to root MT4GS with any hboot" then do what it says in the very first post. It's clear, and worked for me.
