Gapps is not installing everything? Weird.

Hey folks,
So its not an actual issue, but it's bugging me a lot.
When I flashed Flinny's CM ROM ( build 18) I also flashed Gapps ( about 80Mb worth of data) to have all of Google suite installed on first boot. But weirdly enough, I only had Google Play on the phone and had to manually download all the other apps from the market.
It wasn't a big of a deal but I always wondered where the 80Mb worth of apps went?
Any ideas on why it did this?
Thanks

Gapps include all the google sync stuff, initial setup stuff etc, everything that can't be downloaded from play store. Apps like Google maps, Google+ etc aren't included, they can be downloaded from play store.
My understanding was that Gapps contained the most important apps from Google, but it changed apparently! It makes total sense now. Thanks for your info!

The apps are distributed among 3 folders :
Optional - Camera/Gallery and facelock
system/app - most of the unwanted stuff & few of the wanted
system/priv-app - most of the wanted stuff & few of the unwanted
The thing that's bothering me is -
Can I safely delete from PRIV-APP folder ??
I remember I messed with mine with priv-app folder. It should be fine tho. But remember, do at your own risk. I won't shoulder any blame upon any damages incurred.

A better idea is to freeze or diable the corresponding appps u don't need as they are directly integrated into the framework
So deleting it in the .zip might not go so well and might end up with FC's in other apps......
Get Titanium backup and frezze those apps u don't want it should do the trick...

Here's a gapps package that I made for myself out of the most recent Slim minimal gapps. It only has the bare necessities for getting the playstore to function. I added Hangouts for you but I don't have the apk's for maps, google keyboard or launcher, or photosphere. You can download the keyboard and maps from the playstore. AFAIK, photosphere is incompatible with the Atrix 2 because it doesn't have the proper hardware. If you can upload the additional apk's that I didn't have I'll drop them in a flashable zip for you and re-upload the zip here.
Download this one for now:
https://db.tt/mrHPZ08t
Make a backup then wipe cache and davlik and flash in recovery. Of course, you're responsible for everything you do including but not limited to any and all modifications you make to your phone. I have personally tested this and can verify that it works but, hey, $#!+ happens...
If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.

I use Slim GApps for my 4.4 ROMs, it contains the least apks. Here again there are some apps, which, I prefer not to install. I use 7zip to get rid of these apks. just open the zip package and remove the apps from /system/apps, I leave /system/priv-app/ folder as it is. Hope this helps, good luck.

Kitkat SOT and battery life is better than Marshmallow!!

Hi,
I'm always insist on using upgraded ROMs and softwares. For months I was using Marshmallow and my SOT was around 3.5-4 hours. But it was 5.5-6 hours on Kitkat! I thought maybe my battery is aged, but today again i flash Mahdi-Rom 2.9 (Kitkat) and again my SOT is 5.5-6 hours with same usage as Marshmallow! I want to know whats the problem? Do you have same experience? I really like Marshmallow but i'm thinking to use Kitkat as daily driver!
Thanks.
Did you try to compare KK vs MM without Play Services? I'm pretty sure that Google related stuff require more and more battery.
Actually I have +50% of SOT since I removed Google apps.

wow - how does one use an adroid phone without Play Services and Gapps (at least the essentials eg. mail, calendar, etc.)?

Don't try them without GPS, but try them with same version of Google Play Services (9.0.82) that SOT on Kitkat is much better!

Sorry but this makes me laugh! There's a world besides Google apps and services I don't want to give all my personal data to one company. There's plenty of good apps to use, even apps that respect your privacy.
There's also a FLOSS framework to replace Google Services (microG Gms Core).

I've read about them (also on Replica project), but are they safe security wise? microG is heavy alpha and F-droid was accused for outdated apps. For me privacy is not that big of an issue (I'm pretty sure Google, FB, Microsoft, NSA laugh etc. can figure out pretty much anything even if we use open source software), however power and memory consumption is.

The main purpose of microG is privacy concerns, not security (even if I don't notice anything special about security) and it's working well for my needs. Other reasons to use it: free software, no bloatware, legal issues with gapps... The better battery life is just bonus
F-Droid is a small team of enthusiasts of free/libre softwares. Most of the time they have to manually build the apps so don't blame them if they need time and support to update the repos. By using apps from F-Droid, you know that the source code is available and apps respect the users.
In addition, there's a big difference between open source softwares and free/libre softwares. GAFAM shouldn't have too much power and it's dangerous (example).

Keep getting Google Play Services not available

Hello guys,
I'm new to Android, mainly Microsoft products user. Got the P40 Pro and everything seems fine without the Google Play Services but some of the apps I install using APKPure display a dialog box at startup ("The application requires Google Play Services which is not compatible with your device") but the application keeps running and everything is fine, just getting this annoying popup... got it for eg. on Microsoft To-Do, SoundClound, Netflix... but not on Waze, neither on Microsoft Word/Excel/PPT, etc.
My question are: is there a workaround? I heard about GMS, is this something possible for the P40? Would a custom ROM solves this?
Thanks a bunch for your expert feedbacks guys!
this guy got google working on the p40 pro.

Don't make your life difficult guys.
You can live without gapps as well.
I have setup my p40 pro without gapps and everything works fine.
Nine mail instead of Gmail, tubemate or browser instead of YouTube, apkpure instead of play store, Firefox instead of Chrome and so on...
Also on this phone Netflix latest edition app works perfect.
All current projects of gapps installation its extremely unstable till now.
Try to enjoy your phone

google assistant is irreplacable, and i am driving a lot, so using that is really handy.
Google maps is also much better then the alternatives (mostly in places of interest though)
i agree that the rest can be replaced with alternatives.

Hey, could you do me a favour please? Does Google Translate work okay if sideloaded? I use it quite a lot and would prefer to keep it over other apps (if possible of course) . My P40 Pro is on preorder, I can't wait for next week. Cheers ?

Sorry man but I'm not totally agree.
There are indispensable google services:
maps, drive, photos.
By now, those who have relied on Google for years, will not be able to do without it.
Without forgetting that Google services give access to many services (banks, backups) and the lack of these would make the phone almost an ornament.
Also many apps (including Netflix) work / don't work. It may be that today it works and after an update it no longer works. On YouTube there are tons of reviewers showing it.
Cutious if notifications will work from play store apps on the p40 through what method.
Yes, it works.
i installed it and i noticed that google play games not working and some games can enter throw it and others you can not or it takes time to enter the game to get some info and data throw your play account .
also google pay not working and not enter it
Twitter notifications dont work (there no bell icon in the app and under push notifications settings, nothing appears) the app works fine though). Nest app notifications dont work either. Ebay app not working either. App gallery is terrible, I knew it was bad but not this bad. The phone is beautiful but quite disappointed so far as I dont depend on Google Services much, will probably be returning it, I think.

do i need gapps?

looking to get a more updated rom for youtube and livenettv so was looking at the android 6 roms. since i only want to use 2 apps on this device do i need to install gapps as well or can i skip gapps and just sideload the 2 apps i plan to use on the tablet?
If you want to sign in to your Google Account you're gonna need Google Services of some sort, maybe you could use MicroG for that. Other than that I don't think gapps are necessary.
hi, i dont need to sign into any google services. just need it to run youtube and livenettv. dad wont be doing anything else with it.

Well you can watch YouTube even on stock android browser.
this is sorted now. flashed tablet with omni rom 6.01. no gapps and youtube and livenettv working great. much faster than stock rom was too.
the lack of gapps really frees up a lot of ram and helps the tablet zip along with relatively no slowdown. only drawback i got to manually get the apk for what i want to install. but added advantage that ads cant launch playstore etc.
