1. phone working 100%. USB and all.
2. previously had USB debugging on, plugged into PC & needed ADB drivers so installed the Motorola ones.
3. Windows then tells me unrecognized device, swapped cable, tried different PC, no go. all the same.
4. Whilst in fastboot, same issue.
Things were fine prior to this, which is why I'm finding it odd. I did have USB debugging on & the device plugged in when I installed the drivers but I'm not sure if this was the cause or not. Any help?
Would the usb connector on the phone happen to be stuffed?
Do you have any Linux machines around?
It sounds like typical Windows driver issues, unfortunately.

Windows can't identify the device to even install a driver, this is why I'm finding it a little bizarre. I do have Linux live cds I guess ill give that a try

Would be interesting at least to see what lsusb says.
My device kinda works still, although the screen is broken... Should say something like 22b8:0228 for your Motorola.
Edit - and I guess what I meant to say, is if Windows installs the wrong drivers it may be getting something hosed up.
Nope, no go. Lsusb doesn't even seem to recognise it.
However, when I did factory reset the phone, and plugged it into a mac, the phone responded by telling me that it was in 'charge only' mode; and that usb debugging was enabled [which I did]. Which techincally meant it was working!
but, as soon as I tried to plug it into a PC, same unknown device issue. Back into the Mac, and didn't even register. I'm stumped
Very bizarre.
Any other ideas?
What do you mean lsusb doesn't recognize it...? What's the output?

The output doesn't even list the device connected. I tested this with random flash drives and such, libusb sees them, but when the phone itself is plugged into the machine, it lists the same items [I assume the usb bus] as when it isn't plugged in.
As I said, very bizarre. This seemed to have happened when I had the phone connected to the PC whilst installing the motorola drivers. Weird. & that the phone only charges via a mains plug now, and not thru usb directly.
You said you tried a different cable & PC... did you?
It does sound like USB is broken, water damage perhaps? Seems popular nowadays
(kidding, my Q was water damaged...)
If USB doesn't work in fastboot mode, on multiple USB cables (I'm assuming you have the OEM cable and have tried it first), multiple USB ports, and multiple computers... It does sound like the port is somehow fried. Never heard of such a thing, to be honest. Even my water damaged Q eventually started working on USB again and I was able to RSD it back to stock.

I've looked everywhere and cant seem to find an answer, so i figured i'd start a new thread.
My captivate used to connect to my computer just fine, but there was another computer it would just NOT connect too! Well, after a few months, it stopped connecting to my home computer as well.
I have USB debugging on, the phone is rooted and everything. When I plug it in and mount the USB drives, i get drives J and K on my computer, one for the internal storage, and one for the SD card i have in the phone.
When double clicking any of those drives, it just sits there and reads forever without ever doing anything. I can use the SDK to run "adb devices" and it see's the phone, Odin One Click finds the phone but freezes on reading file line, or just fails all together.
Any ideas?
Try reinstalling the samsung usb drivers and restart your computer, that'd be my first step.

You have to be on the touch wiz home screen if you're trying to connect to Kies, otherwise turn on USB debugging and you should be good to go

SeenNotScene: I've uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed several times. I've been having this problem for a couple months now and i've tried everything i can think of. It doesnt work
bkhams: I dont even know what Kies is? I always have USB debugging turned on, and once connected i bring down the drop down menu and mount the USB so i can access my phones files as if they were another drive.
I had the same problem, and Samsung peeps told me I had to use the USB cable that came with the phone, low and behold they were right. Connected right away with the USB that came with the phone, could that be your problem?
I had the same problem in the past and it was actually a hardware problem with the Captivate and not anything with the computer. I ended up taking the phone in and they exchanged it for me.
I do not know if yours could be having the same problem, but that was my experience. Frustrating, to say the least.
Hmm... Could be the hardware i guess.. I know its not the cable though because i've only ever used the cable that came with it.
Have you tried connecting to the USB port directly off the motherboard? My connections were "sketchy" at best when using the ports of the top of the computer case. Once I connected directly off the MOBO, zero problems since.
Sloved!

Thank you for suggestions! My front USB connector is probably connected to some internal HUB, not going straight to the motherboard and wont work. Connecting directly to MB USB solve the problem. I am a little bit surprised... but whatever - M$ bull*hits. I spend couple of hours yesterday to find out whats going on. Thank you again!
I have been searching for about a week now and still can't figure this problem out. I bought this phone used about a month ago and I haven't tried to connect it to my pc until just recently. I am wanting to root and unlock my phone but I can't connect to pc using usb cord although it will charge it.
I am on GB 2.3.6 vuvkj6, stock.
I have tried 4 different usb cords, 4 different pc/laptops and all usb ports. I have also installed and uninstalled several usb drivers with no luck.
My phone can only get into download mode using a jig. Even in download mode, I can't connect to pc. I have tried using Heimdall, Odin, and kies but it just does not connect.
If I can use a jig to get it into dl mode, does that mean the phones usb port is fine?
I just want to be able to connect with pc. Is it possible to flash using my sdcard? I am thinking maybe the phone is missing something to pick up the usb signal or something.
I am lost, any help would be appreciated.
Maybe, I think it's a phone issue.
Do you still have a warranty?
I bought this phone used, so no warranty. If the jig works, does that mean the usb port is ok?
Does the phone charge when plugged in? Have you tried to go ahead and flash even though it says not recognized?
ligitalipeople
Yes the phone does charge when plugged in. I can't flash using Heimdall or Odin. Any other way of flashing?
I have also put the phone into debug mode with no luck.
Have you done a factory reset?
Yes, I have done a factory reset.
FINALLY! I got it to work.
Can you post back here and tell us what you did to get it working in case someone else has the issue?
Thanks and glad you got it going!
I am not sure what made it work for me. But what I did was "clear memory" on ram. I don't remember how I got onto that screen but I clicked on ram and clear memory.
I then pushed the usb into the pc a few times really fast until pc showed somethnig other than "usb device not recognized". Pc then started to show device connected.
if you are using windows i have found that sometimes the usb ports u used for the phone get stuck to the driver that was there in the first place. So what I do to fix this is go into device manager from the control panel and then uninstall the drivers for the specific port that I am trying to use. While keeping my phone unplugged from the computer I then reinstall the samsung drivers, restart my computer and then try to plug my phone in. 90% of the time that has been what works for me.
Ok, I figured out the problem. It has nothing to do with the drivers or clearing ram memory. My problem is the actual micro usb connection. If is a little loose from side to side and when I push it to one side, it connects no problem.
That is the exact same thing that happened to my wife's phone... luckily it was still under warranty...

My phone is out of warranty. At least now I know the problem. It was extremely frustrating trying to figure it out.
So my girlfriends little brother gave me his skyrocket. He asked me to backup his pics, which I did with no problem. I then did a factory reset. After that, my computer does not recognize the phone! I've tried different cables, different computers. My girlfriend has the exact same phone, connects right away.
I even flashed it with a different rom and put ICS on it. No luck! I then proceeded to take it to a phone repair place, thinking it might be the actual usb port. They said they checked out the port, and it look fine. All solder joints were good, no bent pins.
The weird thing is, is that it connects on an average of 1/20 times! It charges perfectly too. The phone doesn't go in and out of charge mode if i wiggle the cable either. I'm kind of confused! Is there a file on the phone that tells the computer what it is when connected? If so, can I manually replace that file? WHAT DO I DO!
When you goto recovery mode can you goto mounts and say mount usb? and does the pc recognize it then?

Kind of. We had trouble with it when flashing it. I personally didn't flash it. I watched my friend do it

You could try installing the drivers again..
You mean on the computer? I did that. No luck. It does connect more often though WITH the drivers.
I had some problems with USB connectivity too. Using the cable that the Skyrocket came with solved my issues.
Have you tried any combination of restarting and reinstalling the drivers?
Swyped from my Nook Tablet, running CM7.
Yes. I've tried multiple cables including the stock cable. Installing drivers, restarting both devices. I have definitely ruled out the cable, the PC ( PC's actually), and the physical USB port.

I had similar issues, messed with phone for a bit and came up with this
System settings>more>USB utilites
Now I got a screen that says USB mass storage with a button that says Connect storage to PC. Tap Button.
A window will pop up asking to Turn off USB debugging (if on) Tap OK
Connect USB cable to storage (plug USB cord into PC).
You should now be at the USB Mass Storage screen, Tap button at bottom (Turn on USB storage)
I found this to be the way to turn on Mass Storage since I flashed ICS, I believe. Hope this helps you, it took me a little while to figure out.

Of course, that's how it's always been except in a slightly different location on ICS
I've tried that also. Didn't work

it basically sounds like the USB port on the phone is dead. Warranty that sucker
I took it to a repair shop. They said the port was perfectly fine!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
Not to mention that it was working perfectly before I did the factory restore
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
how exactly did the repair shop test it?
try plugging it into another usb port on the same computer or try using a different computer. It could be the usb port on the PC itself.

That's the first thing he tried, it's in the OP
yeah i've tried everything! The repair shop determined that the port was good by examining it under a scope and they also said they tried re-flowing the solder joints. They said they wanted to stay away from replacing the usb port because it was very difficult to replace, not to mention they didn't warranty the job!
Someone has to know the answer to this!

if its still under warranty replace it, thats all u can do. No one else in this forum besides u can physically touch the phone, so if you've tried all suggestions thats all thats left
i have the same problem but mine is little different, when i power off the phone it keeps on going to download mode, i keep on restarting it and it goes back to download mode, i flash stock rom and it does the same, i flash ics rom and it keeps on doing the same can anyone help?
I have already submitted the RMA for this since it is refurbed and I only have a few days left to return it, but I thought I double check here.
I can charge fine, but with two different cables (one is geniune ASUS), I can not get a PC to even acknowledge I plugged in the TF700T....both LInux and Win7.
This doesn't seem to be a common a problem, or I fail at searching so I am assuming it is damaged USB port....

Coud be. Could also be that you do not have the correct drivers installed...
Did your PC install drivers the first you connected to it?

On Linux you don't need a driver. If neither dmesg nor lsusb show any trace of the tablet on more than one PC, I'd also say it's a broken USB port on the device.
Yep lsusb shows nothing...fresh win7... load back it goes....

Or my computer won't recognize my phone... not sure which.
Anyway, when I plug the phone into my computer it still charges, but I don't get the option to use it as a mass storage device, so I can't transfer files between phone and computer.
I got a new usb cord about two months ago and it worked up until now, so I don't think it's the cord.
I've tried taking out the SIM card and battery, restarting phone/computer, installing KIES, toggling USB debugging... not sure what else to try.
Anyone else ever have this problem?
Go into device manager on the pc with the phone plug in. There will be a usb port with an exclamation mark on it. Manually update the driver to android adb interface.

Ok I just tried that... I don't see any exclamation marks anywhere.
I tried reinstalling the drivers from Samsung's website and that didn't work either.

Your pc isn't recognizing that your device is connected at all. It's not a driver issue. It's either the usb cord or the usb port on your phone that's not working
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Hmm alright... I'll buy another cord and see if that works... thanks.
@jd1639 nailed it, imo. You've either got a bad cord or a bad port. I'd try a different USB port first, and if that doesn't solve it, you know you've got a bad cord.
This seems to be a funny issue cause now all of a sudden it's working... not sure what happened. It could have been installing the driver and then restarting my computer, or playing around with USB debugging again.
I've read other places of guys trying different cords, etc and nothing working, and then they just take their battery out and back in and then it's working again. So ya no idea.
