[Q] CWM won't install - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I have tried unsuccessfully to install GT-P5110_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.1.0.tar onto my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 WiFi GT-P5110 on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean.
On another tablet – same make, model & OS version – I didn't have any problems in doing so, but on the current one, no such joy, despite making sure that:
all the drivers are installed – I can open and navigate the tablet's folders in Windows Explorer;
debugging mode is ON;
plenty of battery power is available;
plenty of free space – 10.7 GB;
ODIN 'installs' with PASS! indicated.
Each time ODIN 'installs' there isn't a clockworkmod folder displayed in My Files and when I try to restart in 'CWM Recovery' mode I can only enter the 'Android system recovery' mode.
I have tried to install using Odin3_v1.85 and with Odin3-v3.04.
Attached are the logs, messages and texts displayed on my screen from the:
'download' mode on the tablet;
'installation' log on ODIN after it 'installs' CWM;
'Android system recovery' mode menu options.
Any advice please would be very welcome. If this has already been answered on this forum, then my apologies for asking again, but I hadn't found a post related to it.

Thanks for a concise but detailed description of the problem and what you did. (I'm sorry I don't have an answer.)
Sent from my GT-P5110 using xda app-developers app

IF when you try to boot into recovery it goes to the android system recovery you need to reflash clockwork recovery with odin 1.85. The first time you exit CWM recovery it will ask you if you want to prevent the tab from installing the factory recovery over itself on reboot. You need to select yes.
Then boot into CWM and flash your rom.
---------- Post added at 02:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:10 PM ----------
Also uncheck auto reboot in Odin. Once you flash the .tar you need to hold power and the volume down(?) button which ever volume button is for recovery. If the tab reboots and you dont make it into recovery for whatever reason the first time the tab will flash the default android recovery right back.

Hi CodyF86
Your suggestion worked – many thanks. :good:
Just curious though, why should it work by accessing 'CWM Recovery' mode without allowing Odin to automatically reboot the tablet?
Also, do you know why can't I see the CWM folder on the SD card, as I can with the 'same' tablet which I'd previously successfully rooted using the 'standard' instructions?

I don't know if I bricked my phone trying to install custom recovery...please help..

I followed the instructions on the following website in order install jelly bean onto the blaze.
wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_t769
I finished the first part of the instructions up until where it says "You need now to manually reboot the phone into ClockworkMod Recovery mode by holding ." I did not know what to press since it has nothing after the word "holding" in the sentence. I did some research on Google to figure out how to do this, but without any luck. So, I think I just pressed the volume and up + down+power keys all together and then released the keys after the screen turned off and I felt 2 vibrations. after a few seconds the screen turned back on and it displayed the following:
==========================================
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-T769
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES(1 COUNTS)
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
**shows an image with phone, computer screen, and a yellow warning sign**
FIRMWARE UPGRADE ENCOUNTERED AN ISSUE. PLEASE SELECT RECOVERY MODE IN KIES & TRY AGAIN.
===========================================
Now, no matter what I do, the phone keeps booting to this screen. As I understand it, I have to boot into recovery mode manually and then follow the instructions from the second part of the instructions list and install the jelly bean OS. How do I proceed from here because no mater what i do like removing the battery, sim and sd card and powering up again, it keeps going to this screen and it won't go beyond it. should i have followed the instructions on that site? and by the way, the only reason why I didn't follow any other site installation instructions is because I thought it would be flawless since it's an official instructions page for the cyangenmod ROM.
Thanks to everyone in advance for your kind help.

Just a soft brick. Very common, and very easy to fix. Unfortunately, I don't really know what to do. I think you must flash another proper firmware in Odin.. don't quote me on that though... just letting you know you can take a sigh of relief.

ok great that's good news!..
so i did some research and found that i need to use fastboot with adb to install this rom. but I cant find any instructions on google that tells me in clear simple language how to use it properly. i have the fastboot and adb files. i am able to run the fastboot console application successfully. but, i dont know what to do at this point. The phone is in the download mode warning screen where it tells me to press volume up or down keys. I have the phone plugged into the computer. so, is the battery being charged right now? I'm afraid it may die on me.
I'm reading those instructions from wiki.cyanogenmod.org for this and it is very unclear and meant for advanced users. I need plain simple instructions..
I typed in "adb reboot bootloader" and it says "error: device not found" and typing "fastboot update cm-10.0.0-t769.zip" says "<waiting for device>" but nothing happens.. it just hangs there.. and this was happening even after I installed the official samsung drivers for this phone.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help out this noob. thanks.
For begining use this guide and get your phone back working:

then try again what you were trying on a first place...

"Repartition" checkbox in Odin program will check itself automaticly when you load the PIT file, dont forget to uncheck that, or you will be in a much bigger trouble than the one you are in now...

thank you for this info..
Following the instructions above restored the phone to the older stock rom for the blaze. so, what I am going to do is find clear, simple instructions on how to update the phone to jelly bean 4.1.2.
before restoring to stock though I managed to find a key combination to get the phone into the clockwork recovery mode screen. [press and hold volume up + down + power keys --> then when you see the samsung logo, release the power key while still holding down the volume up + down keys.. hold the keys for a few seconds and then release. --> recovery screen should be displayed] so I did a factory reset and then put the custom rom on the SD by inserting the SD card into the computer and then inserting it into the phone. I then chose the option to install the zip file from the SD card but it says "can't open file (bad)". This was the latest stable version of cyanogenmod. I tried nightly versions too and i got the same error message. I don't know if my sd card is screwed up. I doubt it, because I was able to use it with the phone a few days ago. how should I install the jelly bean update?
should i do it through rom manager or via the SD card? can someone please point me in the right direction? thanks.
Yeah, your doing to much work. All you need is download mode and Odin.
Fix the soft brick from the above link. Then just go the cwm Odin thread, flash cwm. Then install any ROM you want from the Dev section. Don't use wiki for any info on the blaze. Use xda!! Everything you need is here, including helpful folks!

You were probably in the stock recovery, that's why it didn't flash.
Since you restocked, go to this thread and flash cwm recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591622
Then boot to it and flash the latest cm10 nightly and gapps from the cm thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922935

Theres a zip file called "gapps..." short from Google Apps, you need to install that too on top of the CM nightly zip file in order to get the ROM working.
Now that you back in the stock 2.3.6, you need to instal CWM again because you wiped it instaling thru Odin.
Once you have CWM, and the 2 zip files - CM nightly and the gapps, you go thru CWM and wipe the system first... then install the files, CM first, gapps after, heres what u need to do in CWM:
1. Advanced-->Wipe Dalvik Cache
2. Wipe Cache
3. Factory Reset
4. Install zip from SD card-->Choose zip from SD-->install CM nightly zip
5. Install zip from SD card-->Choose zip from SD card-->install gapps zip

download the Google Apps (gaps) zip file from the OP, and go do it.

I just had something similar happen. Yesterday my phone started boot looping and it eventually got to the point where it wouldn't load past the Samsung screen. I did a bit of googling and followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601 to a T. Everything worked on Odin, but now I'm stuck at the firmware upgrade encountered an issue. I tried to do it again and it all works but I get a NAND WRITE: ptn_erase fail on my device over and over, but Odin says it passed. I feel like I've tried everything. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks!

You are not reading what you are typing.
Obvious answer: If you end up in the STOCK RECOVERY you simply do not have a custom recovery installed (Clockworkmod as you wrote). Get yourself a copy of a recent recovery from AndroidAndi's download repository (TWRP, Clockworkmod Swipe, PhilZ Touch), and flash the .tar.md5 of the recovery with ODIN in download mode.
Obvious question: How did you flash a ROM, other than some OTA Stock Samsung update on the device itself, in the first place when you don't have a custom recovery installed in order to do so?
EDIT: What exactly do you mean by "factory reset"? Did you re-flash your tablet with a Stock ROM? If that's the case, then any custom recovery you had installed was wiped and replaced with the stock recovery. Hence why you now don't have a custom recovery anymore.

Just to recap on the steps you should have done...
1. You downloaded the .tar.md5 of the recovery you want to install, from Android Andi's filehost, on your PC
2. You installed the Samsung USB drivers on your computer
3. You installed ODIN on your computer
4. You unplugged the tablet from the charger and powered it off
5. You took your tablet and HELD VOL-UP while you powered it back on (to get into bootloader mode)
6. You plugged the tablet in to the computer and waited for a moment while Windows was installing the driver
--- Here the story ends, according to what you wrote as you say ODIN does not find the tablet.
Well, are you sure you did the steps so far in that order? Can't be that ODIN doesn't detect the tablet when it's operational (read: no a total dead brick) and it's in download mode.
The ONLY problem possible: You installed Samsung KIES, and not just the USB drivers, on your computer. KIES interferes with ODIN. You need to exit ODIN, bring up the Task Manager (press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and select "Task Manager"), find "kies" and end the running process(es) - ignore any warning message.
If that's too complicated: Uninstall KIES and then find the "Samsung Mobile USB drivers" installation package ... with a bit of searching (just to assign some homework to you) you will the links right here in this forum section more than just once.
Once KIES is terminated, or uninstalled and just the USB drivers installed, start ODIN again ... now it should detect the tablet.
Once ODIN confirms that the tablet is detected...
7. Select the .tar.md5 of the recovery as the "PDA"
8. Flash the recovery. Once complete the tablet rebooted into the newly installed recovery.
As for on-device flashing. That's possible...
- Your installed ROM must be ROOTED (no root, no fun)
- You need Chainfire's "MobileODIN" (the free version from the Play Store would suffice), and you need to let MobileODIN install the "p311x flashkernel package" (I think with the free version you need to download it manually from Chainfire's thread and install it manually) - jump into Chainfire's thread and read on
Once you have Mobile ODIN installed it is just a matter of:
- Download the .tar.md5 of the recovery on your tablet once more (or transfer it over from your PC)
- Start Mobile ODIN
- Select the .tar.md5 of the recovery (should automatically be set as a "PDA")
- Flash and reboot into the recovery
However, as a fair warning ... as with every flashing of your device ... keep in mind something could go wrong (just to straighten it out that there's always room for user mistakes or murphy's law getting into the way ("Everything that can go wrong will go wrong"))

For future reference: keeping VOL DOWN UP held while powering on/rebooting the tablet takes you into the recovery in case you borked the system and selecting "Reboot" -> "Recovery" from within the _custom_ ROM's power menu is not an option (the Stock Samsung ROM does not have that option by default). Though keep in mind that this only works when the tablet is _NOT_ connected to the charger/computer ... when the USB cable is plugged in it seems to ignore the hardware keys.

Now that you mention it... yes, you're right jrc... "VOL DOWN" == Download Mode / "VOL UP" == Recovery (I failed to recall the "UP as in update.zip" association).

[Q] P6200 Bootloop Problem. Need to recover files.

Hi,
I have Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus (P6200).
The device was stuck in a bootloop sequence.
It boot until enter the main screen then it freeze then the screen is off then start the boot again.
I really need to recover the files from internal storage.
I've tried copy the file when it enter the main screen. But when I choose the folder, the device start to reboot itself.
I've tried using ADB. Get my self in recovery and the ADB can recognize the device. But the main problem is, I can't access the /data folder because I don't have any access. I tried SU on ADB Shell but I get Segementation Fault. I tried adb root and get ADBD cannot run as root in production builds.
is there anyway to save the data ?
Thank you
Write CWM witch Odin, then run CWM and plug in to PC and mount internal storage.

I was waiting for a while, still nothing happened. Then I manually turn off the device by holding the power button for about 5 seconds.
When I powered up the device again, the recovery still the same (Android Recovery 3e).
How long is the uploading progress take to complete ?
To flash CWM you need a few seconds
watch this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUAEFDYG4uk it is the same method on Glaxy S2.
Check or reinstall your Samsung drivers.

Here is the URL to the photo :

sorry for the link, I cannot write down a direct link in here because my current post in XDA is less than 10.
I've tried using Odin several times and still stuck in that screen.
If you Plug-In galaxy tab to PC then ID:COM flash in yellow like this screen odin connect? If not, you can't send any file to galaxy.
Last Chance: you can flash official firmware (from sammobile.com) with Odin, remeber do not select "re-partition" and "PIT" option, after flash u can ran your TAB and seve all data.

Yes, the Odin flashed yellow, and the report was a success.
The loading bar in the device is showing progress from 0 a 100 percent full bar, then it stuck there. Not like the others that automatically rebooting.
I don't know about flashing with official FW, i'am afraid that it will remove all my data.
Are you sure it wont remove my data ?
All your data will be safe, odin flash only system data files.
when I updated my TAB from ICS to JB witch Odin, after update must be meke FACTROY RESET to erase all data files on TAB.

Go to the moar secret mission thread on sprint note 5 android development page, on his instructions there is a twrp file either tar or zip. Id download the tar, flash it using odin and either boot to recovery with button combo (power+vol up+home) or if it reboots automatically after odin flash just power off, and hold combo until booted to twrp, if your not already rooted be sure to have a zip file of supersu saved, once in twrp flash the supersu, BE SURE to have OEM unlock enabled and usb debugging in the developers settings. Hopefully your rooted already, if not, get rooted by that or tutorials on here. Oem unlock deff needs to be on before anything.

You cant flash it by using that recovery menu you have in pic upload. Youll have to do some reading probably on how to root it and stuff, to keep it slim and hoping you know what to do/doing hoping your using the actual odin software on a windows pc and all of that, are you? If not, pc- go to google "odin samsung" should come up first result or close ,download odin (also in moar 3.2 thread), unzip, open odin, boot phone to download mode holding (power+vol down + home) at screen press up to continue, plug in pc w/usb. Wait until odin recognizes and drivers installed if needed. Add twrp tar file to ap slot on odin. Flash. Find tutorial on here, or moar 3.2 has step by step with odin and twrp files needed. Also check cf-autoroot for your device as i am thinking u may not be rooted or have odin installed or have an idea on what ur trying to do and not saying in mean or disrespectful way and correct me if wrong and if so my apologies, but from your images, steps, wording, i suggest browsing and reading other easily found tutorials and howtos on rooting, installing custom recovery and how to not brick your phone which is about 2 steps away from where you were at, also fixable, pita that can be avoided by using threads others have written on here. If you want additional help or have questions message me and ill guide more specifically.
After flashing twrp, you must, after checking that oem unlock is on and usb debugging is on, flash a custom kernel. I used Aurora Kernel.

Having trouble installing a rom and a recovery

I have Samsung galaxy Tab 4(SM-T230NU). Specs
CPU: Quad-Core, 1.2GHz
Display: TFT, 1280 x 800 (WXGA)
Resolution: CMOS 3.0 MP
I am onl 14 years old and have a tablet which i want to install a custom rom on. I tried all the methods but nothing is working
I recentley downloaded king root( 5.3.0 )from their official website and installed the application on my tablet. Everything went well, but when the percentage reached 71 I believe the app said root failed and I requested it but nothing really happened I tried it again and again and nothing happened.
FILES I DOWNLOADED
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-X...HZI8FkBDLlL3d9 TWRP(I don’t know if it’s a .tar file)
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VM...9v35zE8vgrsI76 (Odin)
https://drive.google.com/open?id=12z...hbl_AF0Rc1bpXJ (kingroot)
(CONTINUATION)
Then I went to Odin's website and downloaded Odin(version 3.10.6) and also downloaded Team Win Recovery Project(TWRP) Version 3.1.1-0 .I don’t know if it’s a ".tar file". But the file name is TWRP 3.1.1-0-degas.img
I turned on download mode (Power button-Volume Down(-)-Home Key), connected my USB cable to the PC and turned on Odin and flashed it using ODIN. The tablet said downloading and rebooted.
• When I pressed Volume up(+) Home and Power Button, it brought up android recovery but there was no twrp.
Since my tablet does not show the OEM Unlock option I enabled USB debugging and tried it again then also it didn't work.
Then I read another forum on Xda which stated that I must install a .tar file on the tablet using odin and that also did not work for me
The link for the recovery.tar file

Rooting does not work and a recovery cannot be installed now what will I do......

Find a copy of TWRP for your specific model number in .tar format, the one you already downloaded is a .img file, Odin can't flash that, it has to end in .tar not .img.
Find the .tar file then flash it via Odin in the AP slot, make sure the "auto reboot" option is UNCHECKED in Odin before you hit the start button.
When it's done flashing, disconnect from PC then power down the tablet, then hold volume up+home+power. If you did everything right it will boot into TWRP, if you didn't, it will boot into stock recovery, if this happens you'll have to flash TWRP again. It has to successfully boot into TWRP immediately after flashing in order to keep TWRP, otherwise it reverts back to stock recovery.
When you successfully boot to TWRP you can then flash a ROM if any exist for your tablet.

Ok, this is quite long with several steps.
Find a copy of the newest TWRP 3 for your model that you can find, this time you're looking for a TWRP file that ends in .zip or .img(.zip is preferred but .img files can also be flashed in TWRP), then get your copy of CM14, then go to opengapps.org, select these options: ARM, 7.0 then micro or mini gapps package, then select the red download button.
Place all of these on your internal SD card(or external SD card if you have one) where you can find them, then boot to recovery by powering down then holding the button combo again, when you get into the TWRP that you have, select the "install" option, then go to where you placed the copy of TWRP 3 and select it, swipe the slider to flash it. When it's done flashing tap the home button in TWRP, select "reboot", then select "recovery", this will reboot into the new version of TWRP. Now you're ready to create a backup of your stock ROM and then flash your new ROM.
Tap the home button in TWRP, select "backup", the default partitions that are pre-selected should be fine(if you have an external sdcard, there's an option to choose the location the backup is stored in), swipe the slider to backup. Making this backup is very important, it can be used to restore your device to exactly what you had when you created it, similar to a restore point in windows. If you ever have issues, boot to TWRP and select the "restore" option then find your backup file and restore it.
Now, on to flashing your ROM. Tap the home button in TWRP select "advanced wipe" then select these partitions:
cache
data
dalvik/ART cache(DO NOT SELECT INTERNAL STORAGE, it will wipe your backup and your ROM and gapps file if you have them stored on internal)
swipe the slider to do the wipe. Then go to where you placed the CM14, select it, then you'll see a button that says "add more zips", tap that, then go to the gapps package and select it, then swipe the slider to flash them, they both will flash together, when it's done, tap reboot, reboot to system.
It will take 20 minutes or so to boot into the new ROM, just wait, everything has to load for the first time.
Read these steps carefully. If you have problems with bootlooping or not booting after flashing, let me know and I'll get you straight, the steps I listed are the standard steps, sometimes there are extra steps that need to be done when wiping and flashing. I'll walk you through the extra steps if needed.

Again Thanks for helping me.May god bless you for your amazing talent.
I updated twrp recovery to the latest version and it looks dope but there iss dope but there is a teeny tiny problem.
So I live in a village in India where the internet speed is 1mpbs and its really difficult for me to download an eight hundred MB file. So please bear with me, I will send the results soon if I find a place with good download speeds.
Thanks for guiding me by providing some steps, you really didn’t have to write this much but it helped me out a lot and if you are in the USA
Happy thanksgiving
Greetings from the darkknight,
I dwonloaded the rom from google drive, it is cm 11 not cm 14.1. I launched twrp recovery on my tablet and selected the wipe option and then selected what all you told me except the internal storage but then I got a Failed to mount error on my device.Then ignoring this I tried to flash the cm11.zip file but then twrp crashed.No bootloops or anything like that occured.
The error appeared when I tried to clear the cache

When you got the "failed to mount error" what did it say that it failed to mount? Which partition or file gave the error?
You might need to try a different version of TWRP, if you're flashing CM11 then you can use any version of TWRP as far back as version 2.8 or newer, an older version of TWRP might do a better job.
