Should I trade in my Desire Z for the Nexus S?
I'm mostly after browser speed and everyday performance
What happened to the nexus sense port? I had a galaxy S before and it was always slower to the original desire but with ginger on the NS it just might do the trick.
Are you guys satisfied with the NS especially coming from other android devices?
If browsing speed is your priority, I would suggest you wait a bit. Currently the stock browser is rather laggy.
Laggy even with overclock, custom roms (cyanogen, nscollab and infinity) ?
Does cyanogen have the auto text reflow function?
I use my Nexus S since 3 months. It's fabulous.
Choose the right ROM and Kernel! It will be smoothest!
Great experience during 2 days without any charge or FC.
GNS is a very nice device. Buy GNS and flash CM, then enjoy)
Nexus S all the way. Desire Z is old news. I'd rather choose Desire S
Personally it was a bad idea to ask for an advice in a nexus s forum . lol.
anyway, a fair answer for me would be, there is no big deal of a difference between the 2 phones. If you were to buy one of these, then i would have said nexus s but since you already possess the dz, then no need to make the change. speedwise they are the same. the difference maybe comes from the gpu but you said you are only for browsing experience. i think you should stick to the dz until you get something better.
you do have amazing devs back there... i am sure finding a good custom rom is not a problem.
Just 3 hours ago, SuperAOSP Rom created by SUPERTAMEL, has changed the whole browser system
No more lagging issue, just pure enjoyment of browsing
I guess, you come to Nexus S in the right time
Development on the Desire Z has pretty much stalled with the keyboard being the biggest limitation. Even the Desire has better roms for gingerbread. I've owned a SGS before and the browser was indeed a little slow so I should expect performance to be on par to that. The SGS wasn't that bad but I switched to the Z mainly because of the LED flash which is very important to me as a flashlight
What ever happened to the NS sense port? I was looking at some vids over at youtube and they looked really smooth with some minor issues and non working features but nevertheless usable! Was the 0.3 build the one that caused the problem with the IMEI? What exactly happened?
What's the difference in real life performance between SuperAOSP, INfinity and Cyan?
Netarchy is the best kernal option available right? In layman's terms, what does proton voltage do and how do I know what settings to use?
Thanks for helping a NS noobie

Well, sadly that Samsung has put the most important file "EFS" at a very insecure place. And, we never realise that until we find that Nexus Sense has "wiped" the whole EFS data too, making all the IMEI number being the same
So far everyone is trying to get it fix, not a single news yet, but soon

SUperAOSP, is the rom created with extra setting known as SupSetup
Infinity is created by Jonathan Griggs where he is very keen in ANdroid and added lots of different features.
Cyan 7 is the nightly build where different bugs and fixes are keep updated and fixed.
Kang's Cyan is the lighter and better version of Cyan 7.
Muiu is the Iphone version of Android (Use this rom if you like iOS interface)

Netarchy or Trinity. Both are equally good.
Both has OC and UV kernel.
Proton voltage let you customize the voltage you wanna set for each frequency and it's only usable for Netarchy kernel.

I come from a desire and i am very much dissapointed in the browsing experience of this phone. It's not hardware accelerated so rendering flash content or bigger images is a pain. If your only looking for that, better stick with the desire z. I've tried all roms btw and I always end up using opera mobile.

So no real difference in performance between cm7, kangs, infinity and superaosp except preference? What's the best rom for me if I need BLN and vibrate on call answer?
How do I know the best settings for photon? Or can I just use default?
Finally got my phone and this thing is wicked fast! I've never experienced a phone out of the box this good! Screen is yellowish as usual though Speakerphone volume is excellent as well!
Browser seems to be very good, not super fluid but good enough. Not as stuttery as my old SGS. Mighty tempted not to flash a custom rom because it's already very good!
Cm7 is recommended, it will change the experience totally and it has text reflow after zoom. I personally use the nightlies a lot but it's up to you, they might be laggy sometimes.

Well, I would like you to try SUPERAOSP first, then only CM7
Netarchy Kernel or Trinity Kernel would do the job for your BLN and vibrate

Just use the suggested voltage.
Or you can use mine too.
I tested and using it for 3 weeks haven had any reboots or lag.
-100mv for 100,200,400,800mhz
-50mv for 1000,1200
1400mv for 1300
1450mv for 1400

Thanks for the help guys really really big help I really really appreciate it!
The browser on superaosp is much smoother but I encountered some instances wherein it just would not scroll the page even after swiping the screen multiple times. Perhaps it's the way I swiped the screen? switching to my left hand which was holding the phone made it much better.
BLN and vibrate on answer working perfectly!

Im pretty satisfied with this phone at the moment, with my headphones on this thing can produce way better audio than any HTC phone I have tried. Bass is booming and vocals are rich.
My only quip is the battery which never reaches 100 percent like my old SGS. A calibration should do the trick..I hope.
1.
So I followed the Cromi discussion about the audio but I dont get it. Whats wrong with the audio? I flashed Beats but didnt try it yet. DSP and Clear Audio too but I cant see any apps or configurations? Are those things working or should I reflash Cromi?
2.
I also get a Quadrant Score of 6025. Is that good or bad for this device?
3.
OH MY GOD: I just got the new update for the native mp3 player app. This looks sooo HORRIBLE. How can I get the old one with the beautiful blue/black design and nice graphic effects back? The new design gives me eye cancer.
4.
Is there something wrong with the battery stats? Mine went from 13% to 4% while I wrote and edited this text.
Update: It is now completly drained
I suspect those complaining about the TF700's lacking volume belong to the younger generation..
For me it's plenty loud enough and I don't use the build-in speakers anyway - I use headphones.
Beat Audio has some nice pre-sets and the equalizer does improve sound, for my ears at least..
Clear Audio is not app, it's just implemented in the rom. Does it make a difference? Beats me - I just don't care enough to really test it.
I believe your quadrant scores are pretty much in line with what other users get. Tons of posts on that somewhere in the CromiX thread - and again: Who cares about quadrants??? Does your tab run well or doesn't it?
There is something funky going on with the battery since 4.2.1 - no doubt about that. There are just too many posts from users with various problems concerning battery drain. I suspect it's the main reason Asus pulled the 4.2.1 zip file from their download site and these problems will get addressed in the 4.2.2 update.
I run CromiX 4.5 and have no problem at all with battery drain or calibration, so I can't really contribute to that discussion...

Hi all,
Ever since I ugraded to 4.2.1, the volume+ app has had no effect on the frustratingly low volume of the tablet (music effects is set to volume+ in settings). I've been using earphones mostly as I can never make out anything coming out of the speakers when there is minimal noise around. I have a rooted tablet with stock firmware. Is there anything that can be done to significantly increase the volume?
Thanks.

Have you looked into installing Sony xLoud & ClearAudio+ using PimpMyRom? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908269)
I'm running 4.1.1 and this mod made my tablet much louder. I believe this mod also works for 4.2.1.

That's too bad. The first post in PimpMyRom thread stated that all you needed was a rooted device so I thought it might work for you. Are you open to unlocking the device? In my experience, the benefits of unlocking and installing custom ROM/mods (including increased volume) have been totally worth the loss of warranty.

Very true!
But I think my tablet would have been left unused for most parts if not for the increased performance gained from unlocking it. Wonder what the failure rate has been so far.

I'm just sticking with 4.1 locked for now, under warranty, and Volume+ even works without root enhancement just great. I've got to turn it down so I don't blow out the speakers! I'm not seeing any reason to "upgrade" personally and I predict I will use my warranty before the year is over. CROMIX can wait. I've got this thing pretty dialed in and I'm satisfied with its performance and reliability rooted and locked on stock ROM. Can't wait to see what it really can do thought on custom ROM but not so bad that I want to pay Asus for repairs in exchange. To each their own.

Hey, in case you're still looking for a way to increase volume, I just found a fantastic app that can drastically increase volume on 4.2.1. It's called Music Volume EQ. I set the volume on it to 6/15 and the tablet sounds really loud. When I was playing with it the volume got so loud I was afraid of blowing the speakers. The equalizer on it works quite well, too.
You can autostart the app on boot and it'll remember your settings so once it's configured to your liking, you can just forget about it and enjoy the loud volume.
I am debating on whether to buy the pro version and flash Franco's Kernel for my Nexus 5 and 7 (2013). I just want to know what I bits of extra I can really do with it.. And if its worth it. I'm more worried about stability than anything I guess. I don't want to run into little issues whether it be audio, video, whatever it may be. Also I have never flashed a kernel or another ROM, I've always stuck with stock. I am running 4.4.2 right now utilizing Gravity Box and Wanam Kit, and a few other modules. Any input would be greatly appreciated. If this thread has been done before, my apologies. I am a brand new forum user, never really get on the computer.

Well to be honest the stock kernel allready is very good, the only downsides of it are batterylife/screenontime and colors are not very vibrant. These 2 aspects are substantialy better with Franco kernel. Screenontime and batterylife is improved by at least 50% or more for some (check out the Franco thread). Also you can raise the speaker/mic/in-call volume as you wish and load a color profile for better and more vibrant colors.
if you want stability stick with stock

I have been getting fantastic battery life with my setup now, I just leave brightness at auto, and from my bit of research, that seems to be the big culprit of battery life. I'm always looking to improve my phone in terms of performance and cosmetic, keeps me busy at negative 60 out here in North Dakota lol.
But 50% overall more battery life?! That's pretty friggin good. Would definitely pay for it for that kind of power.
I'm also assuming based on your post that the color control is not for LED control but the screen itself. Any idea if the Xposed LED module works well? I know its off topic just a quick question.
Not sure about the volumes, I usually don't mess with call volumes, but I'll look into it more.

If you are having trouble making a decision... just flash the kernel with fastboot and give it a test run. Can the free version of FKU auto flash? I'm not sure, you would have to investigate.
If you decide you like it (and the updates that go along with it), then maybe consider buying the app.
But yes, screen on time is better with FK due to the way the clock speeds scale. A lot better. Even with the stock settings, though I find even those to be a bit aggressive.

Most users report a screenontime of about 5-7 hours while stock is about 3,5 hours. Don`t know about the Xposed module but color controll in the Franco kernel updater app is realy good and there are various preloaded settings available. Link thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508284. Backup your current kernel in the FKU before you flash a Franco kernel, so you can restore it if need be.

You can only raise the volume levels (no EQ settings), this should not interfere with PowerAmp.

Hey! For some reason Sony is giving us less gaming performance on everyupdate, at least that's how i feel my M2. I get a better smoother experience on JB, i get a bit less on Kk, and even less on Lollipop. I use an app to meassure fps, i get the exact same frames p/ second, but it does not feel smooth anymore. I've made build prop tweaks on Kk and LP, but i still don't get a good performance comparing it to JB with out tweaks. So in this case it's not hardware, but software issue because it's the same device (ovbiously) but different Android version which doesn't interacts that god with hardware. So i would like to know what tweaks have you guys made to your M2 (if you use it to play games). Like what Android version you have, and what editing have you made. Please don't tell me to get a custom rom, because i have an issue that won't let me unlock BL. Also if there are any good build prop lines that you would like to share that'd be great. Apologies for any missspelled words, i'm not native english speaker.
Ps: I'm not saying that KK or Lp have bad performance, general performance it's great, but not on games.
Ps2: It might not count as a custom rom, but i've tried "Z4 eXPERInce" by "linuxct". It's a great mod, good over all performance, but again, not the same as JB on gaming.
