[Q] Question on which android version should i install on my Defy - General Questions and Answers

Hello.
I'm new here and new on this "world".
I found those two topics:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013059
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702
but I'm a little confused. Which version is better for daily use?
I'm looking forward to root and install the new android on my Defy because my battery lasts like 3 hours, so I bought a new one but the cellphone isn't recognizing it. SO i thought about installing new version since it erases all this battery info and etc from phone and the new one gets to work.
Thanks

HY,the second one is better because you can access apps like phone, bluetooth, wifi, etc, and it might be more apropriate for you.But i suggest you to download a rom that has your current android version, not higher, because when porting roms some stabillity issues might appear.
PLEASE PRESS TAHNKS IF I HELPED.

i would also recomend the second post jelly bean normally has better battery life but it could still be unstable and not as great battery life. android 4.1 and 4.2 are very similar but 4.2 has alot of small improvements that i would want to have myself xD

[Q] Best way to root Liquid Mini

Hi. I'm new in hacking devices. My phone is an Acer Liquid Mini with Android 2.2 Froyo and I have some questions:
1. What is the best way to root my device?
2. What is the best ROM that I can find? I want one that can ugrade the OS to 2.3. There is an official update, already?
If it is possible, provide me links with the best tutorials to do that.
3. If something goes wrong, it is reversible?
Thanks for all the answers and sorry about my english.
Got all your answers!

Hey,
1. The best way would be to use "Super One Click". If you want to know the version I used 1.7 for my liquid mini.
2. Yes there was an official upgrade in October I think. I just got it updated an hour ago and I am on top of the world feels like the first time I got this phone, it looks totally new and no acer UI (thank god) but the new UI in place of the old one looks really awesome. Worth the upgrade. Just go to System>Update phone; and make sure you have atleast 410mb free on your SD.It gets upgraded to 2.3.5.
3. While rooting it won't screw up, it never does. (very rarely unless you act smart and remove your battery during the process) Its very safe nowadays to root.
Hope that helped.

[Q] UMi X1 review and request for custom Rom

I have bought a UMi X1 from china, am in UK and using giffgaff sim... being playing with the phone since yesterday .. managed to get the internet working by putting giffgaff APN manually, tried to install custom ROM, but all in Chinese, even after you change the language there are still things left in Chinese, so i went back and installed the original ROM phone had. changed the language... phone is quite good, i like the screen and speed is very good as well.
managed to install other apps like Google map, chrome, Skype, and some game.. all work good, but when ever i install them some Chinese permission thing comes up, which i don't understand, but i think i keep clicking green tick and it works
I managed to root it using "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460" tried super user and it works (not sure what benefit i get from rooting, sorry am a noob)
I followed instruction for custom roms from "http://www.gizchina.com/2012/10/28/download-install-umi-x1-custom-rom/", still all Chinese.
if any one have a question regarding this phone usage or any other information they required am willing to answer from my experience of this phone.
I would like to know if any one would be willing to develop a clean miui English ROM or jelly bean for this device? or any one willing to help me to develop a ROM ( would need alot of help as i don't know single thing about developing, but keen to learn).
Hi !
Sorry to not answer to your request but i have one question about this phone that i want to buy. The camera is good? In reality it's a 5MP no? Because it's hard to find review about this phone, i know that is a good phone but nothing about the camera. Sorry for my bad english and thanks

I'm also looking for information to root . But also need a rom . Have you got Clockword mod recovery installed ? Please can some one help us to install CWM recovery to UMI X1. Can we use any other rom developed for other MTK6577 phones as this phone also has MK6577 processor.
Any one interested can look one of first article on this topic in English here . Search gizbeat custom rom in google
For a review and video of phone see following: search in google: exclusive-umi-x1-unboxing-and-hands-on

yea, i have done so much to my phone in 1 day, i used shuame tool to install custom roms but kept getting errors, so i installed it manually by going into recovery mod. i installed CWM through google play, but dont know much how to use it, by the looks of it, it not supported with this phone yet. i am on gizchina aswell and asked same question there aswell.
looks like no one is intrested....
how to get some one attention on this?
finally there's a thread about umi (youmi) x1 on xda-dev
i haven't received my phone yet, 7 days using EMS and still in BEIJING seller said because China held presidential election ? so security tighten

there's also rom link on shuame.com but i don't know wether it's also had english language or not , there's also a custom rom for x1 at lewaos.com
I have received my Umi x1,love it but having real trouble flashing the Umi rom, still cant give up.Hoping others will buy phone with more intelligence than me and post, fingers crossed.
I used this method to ROOT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
I tried about all the ROMs from Shaume.com
Without keeping track of procedure.. did a lot of flashing and factory reset
I don't know any chinese, so i just pressed buttons with icons I thought would do the job (with the risk of doing something wrong and brick the phone)
There are a few mods wit CWM, so once that one is installed flashing is pretty straightforward.
I'm having trouble to get a GPS fix (the Netherlands).
After trying many different gps.conf files (/etc/gps.conf) and different apps (GPS Status, GPS Test, GPSFix), Manually download EPO files..
Result: 1 time GPS fix with GPS fix.. but thats it
Anyone a bit more luck with the GPS fix?
Something that might be handy:
Boot into recovery: turn off phone first -> hold volume up and then power on phone. release both when UMI logo shows.
Engeneer Mode: "call" *#*#3646633#*#*

Will get mine tomorrow, it's just cleared customs. I'll probably do a custom ROM too, but it might take time as I'm having exams till the 26th of this month.
Also, I suggest OP to change the title of this thread to '[discussion] UMI X1' or something like that. Thanks.

New ROMs available on:

Root is not complete, I tried this:
- unroot with shuame
- root with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 DOES NOT WORK
- root with shuame WORKS

Just got my N5 and I have a few questions

Since Im a complete newbie I wanted to ask a few questions before doing anything stupid.
1. I noticed people are already posting new ROMs and kernels. Do I need them? I mean, I like the stock and everything but there are a few things I can't do. Why do YOU root and change ROMs?
2. I found a lot of kernels, and I understood that it can improve my performance and battery life. I would very much like to improve my battery life. The thing is, I don't know how. I do know that people are UVing and OCing their CPU, etc but what can a noob do who is not only a noob but also just bought a phone that the rooting thing is new to it. So no everything is fully developed, optimized and ready to go in a few clicks. Do I still need to wait a couple more weeks to change my kernel? I always read kernel threads and their changelogs but it is like jibarish to me. I can't even decide which one to pick.
3. I would really like to change my icons in the quick settings panel. Am I able to do that? How?
4. I tried setting Hebrew as my default language but that just moves the whole interface left. Because in Hebrew we write right to left. It wasn't like this when I had my GS3. I used a few CM Roms on my s3 and they were fine until the update to 4.3. Then it did the same thing on the S3 but I didn't know it would be like this on the N5. Is it something that can be fixed? Can I email Google or call them about this?
5. Is there anyone who is willing to recommend personally some ROMs, mods, apps or any modifications at all?
Thank you in advance!

1 & 2 - I recommend reading the FAQ first, stickied at the top of this Q&A Section. This should give you a good starting knowledge
3 - would need an AOSP based ROM with this feature (CM / AOKP perhaps?)
4 - sorry, can't help
5 - No. This is against what XDA stands for. Read "No best rom threads" sticky in this forum.
1. All your answers can be found here for why you should root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2510966 or http://lifehacker.com/top-10-reasons-to-root-your-android-phone-1079161983
2. Franco Kernel is very friendly to use and once rooted everything can be done from his paid google play app. check it out
3. Once rooted and with customer rom installed like cyanogenmod or paranoid android the themes you download from the google play store will sometimes change the settings icons too
4. i believe cyanogen mod roms have a good hebrew compatibility
5. Just start off very simply. use the cyanogenmod installer from the playstore and wait for the nexus 5 to become compatible. wait for the device to get into more peoples hands and youll see an influx of great roms and mods
good luck and welcome to the nexus community.

My choice was to stay with Stock ROM. I am new to Nexus devices so I wanted to see the subtleties between stock and AOSP.
That said, De-odexed roms are easier to modifiy so I flashed one of those

How are they easier to modify? I mean, how does it come to use? Can you give me an example?
Also, I see you wrote your ROM, kernel and UVing settings in your signature. How is your battery life?

Go to settings > About > tap build version 10 times to enable developer options.
Go in to developer options and you can change the screen alignment.
I second the FAQ at the top of this forum. Incredibly helpful and informative for anyone new to rooting. That should have everything you need, but I guess if I were to add anything to what the above guys (or girls) said, it would be to root FIRST before playing around with your N5 too much. Not sure if it's really obvious or not yet, but the rooting process will result in wiping your device, so it's generally recommended to get that out of the way.
That being said, once you're rooted, I can't recommend Titanium Backup enough for making sure all your stuff is available after any future ROM changes.
Lastly, welcome to the Nexus family =) Glad to have ya

I'll stick to stock in the meanwhile, I'll just install Franco Kernel.

Its just easier. Every system app has an .odex file too that requires extra modification by a themer / developer. Deodexed systems don't need that

Can I upgrade Alcatel Hero 2 to Lollipop?

I'm a complete newbie in the Android world (iPhone user), so I'm so sorry in advance if I'm asking a stupid question. So today I bought an Alcatel Hero 2 from Amazon. The device hasn't arrived yet. The device has Android Kitkat on it and from some youtube review videos I knew that the customized Android version installed on the device is chubby so I thought if I can upgrade to vanilla Lollipop then the performance will improve.
There is very little information on the web about the Hero 2. I only found a webpage (can't post a link here because I'm new but google for "upgrade alcatel hero 2 lollipop" and you'll find it) that says one can upgrade to Lollipop, but it seems to be SCAM. Thus I thought it's better to ask here to get trusted answers since I don't want to get into security problems.
I know what ROMs are and have a little background but I don't know where to get trusted ROMs or if it's possible at all to upgrade my phone. I appreciate any answers.
Many thanks in advance!
Probably not, unless Alcatel comes out with its own Lollipop update or more threads appear here for Hero 2 ROMs.
The Hero 2 isn't very popular, or at least well-known, in the US. I'm surprised you even found it for purchase. Was it on the US Amazon site or a foreign version? Got a link? I was interested in a Hero 2, too, but I could never find it, and now it's getting a little long in the tooth.
Sorry this isn't the answer you wanted. Is it an all right phone overall, though? Reviews were generally favorable.
I don't think there is Lollipop rom for your device.
Hi guys,
any news about lollipop update? Im choosing between Hero 2 and LG G3, but Hero 2 is cheaper for me and it has little bit bigger screen. Any advices please?

This is weird, I looked all over and cannot find any links for original flashing files, not even 4PDA.
But, the rom I ported has no sound (unless you wear headphones), and camera is not working. This was basically just an experiment on trying to port it for first time, but sadly I do not have the device anymore so I won't be able to help much. If you still want to try it, here's the link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/rooting-roms/resurrection-remix-5-8-5-alcatel-t3913051
Meanwhile I'll try to keep looking for the original stock ROM for your device, there has to be something.
I'll let you know if I find anything.

There is no best ROM, only the one that YOU like more. You will have to go through the ROM section and look at them and make your choice. What you like is not what i like and so on, for example i am very happy with the stock ROM and don't see why i would change. But some people hate it, so to each his own, as they say.
