With the never ending camera "stuff" on AOSP, what is everyone's general thoughts on the recently leaked Google Edition Camera? I personally have used TW mainly for better reception, bluetooth, and camera, but I flashed LiquidSmooth the other day for fun, and I honestly thought reception was just as good as my CR7. Much improved since the last time I tried AOSP, which was last December. The main issue would be the loss of the TW camera. Anyone have experience with the new Google camera? Just looking for rational responses that may help others as well, not a TW vs. AOSP debate.
I run both on stock 4.1.2. I like the tw camera because it has more options such as HDR. But I also like to make photospheres. You could find the download and see if its worth the switch.

Google Edition camera is quite annoying and crippled in options compared to CM nightly
Thanks for the replies. I've grown to really like the TW camera, and the fact that I know everything in it will work how intended. I guess, like always, you have to try it to see. I may look into the CM camera, as well as maybe just running the TW cam with the GE 4.3 cam.
Yeah the developers have the AOSP camera so far beyond the Google edition camera that it's not worth discussing really.

Im running PA and I use the AOSP modded camera. It has working HDR and other features but the FFC is a bit wonky. I was really missing the TW camera but now not so much. I dont use my FFC to take pics much and it works fine with video like skype. I found a work around to taking pics with it, just start recording a video with the FFC and then take shots while recording. Then just delete the vid. Pics are good to go.

I like the TW camera way better than the AOSP version because more color effects, anti-shake feature, and all of those best face features but I give a thumbs up to the nice layout and the speed the aosp camera has to offer

I'm hoping Google will release a camera apk with HDR and Photosphere soon..
Can't wait .. I miss TW camera options. It'd be nice to have the option to store pictures in external sd.
I would love to see someone port over TW camera to work with non TW roms.
I hate the Google Edition camera. I don't like the controls and miss the burst mode from the stock camera

Which ROM are you using that doesn't allow moving to SD card? The first beta 4.3 build I tried didn't have move to SD card option but that was fixed almost immediately.

I'm on LiquidSmooth 3.0 unofficial with BMS.
Pushing the menu button doesn't do anything while I'm on google camera mode. It freezes up if I don't manual focus before I snap a pic. So there's a newer apk download available? I have Gallery 1.1.40012 insatalled with photosphere btw.

It works great on aokp. The main difference between this and the jellybean keyboard is that it has swype- like functionality. I'm starting to like it better than swype. Keep in mind that this isn't the released version, so it may not be perfect
Is this the one from android police?

I installed the 4.2 camera from there, and it's buggy.
Taking pictures, videos, and panorama seem to work great. Photosphere doesn't work properly.
Also, in the gallery, which also gets updated, you can't edit and/or crop pictures. It causes the App to crash.
"Unfortunately, the process com.android.gallery3d has stopped." When you click Edit, and "Unfortunateley, Gallery has stopped." when you click Crop.
You also get the "Unfortunately, the process com.android.gallery3d has stopped." message when you click the 3 circle icon thingy located on the bottom left corner when viewing a picture in the gallery.
Also, I randomly got a "Can't connect to camera" message whenever I tried launching the Camera app. Not sure why/how this happened, but restarting the phone fixed it.
The new gallery and camera look great, but I flashed back to the old camera, I like being able to crop my pictures, lol.
The keyboard works flawlessly.

EDIT: If anyone wants a logcat, I'll try to get one.

yeah there are definitely some issues with it. I couldn't edit photos either which sucks cus I wanted to try it. I'm not sure if we'll be able to get photosphere, I think the processor can't handle it. Either that or some sort of sensor issue. I'm sure when the great devs for our phone get JB up and running they will have many more details than I do
I can't seem to either distinguish the difference on keyboards or get the jb one working. Is there a distinct difference? I'm not seeing this swype action work.

Droid life had this posted today.

I also see it's available for the I9300.

I'm not a developer, but how hard would it be to port over to our Verizon model (SCH-I535)?
Right now it opens on the VZ S3 with CM10 and has at least limited access to the camera. Photosphere does not work and it crashes when pictures are taken. Once it crashes it loses access to the camera hardware until a reboot. The gallery side of the app appears to work perfectly and is very smooth and nice. I'm guessing the barrier to getting it working on the S3 is relatively low, perhaps a few libraries, but I've only been playing with it for a few minutes so haven't looked at what's actually going on under the hood yet.

Yea, I just read that. I wouldn't think it would take to long to get it up and running. There's a pretty good community here!
Supposedly the SGS3 has the libs needed already. I too have the same issues as mentioned. You can launch the camera, play around with settings however upon taking a picture it will freeze and force close. Pictures taken with this camera show up in gallery as blank. I'm guessing a bit more work needs to be done before it can be ported over for us. On a side note the new keyboard is pretty sweet.
Edit: Running Liquid Smooth RC7.
Android Police just posted this....

No dice. Flashed and rebooted but the camera seems to be the same. No Photo Sphere.......
EDIT - Cancel that! There are 2 camera APK's. Clicked the wrong one! Seems to work.

From my understanding after reading about it on the Android Police link posted above. Is that the phot sphere does work you just can't view it on your phone. You have to share it to google+ and then log into your google+ and you can view it from there.
Working Port
Try this one guys, everything seems to be working fine for me with this approach.

Did you flash the zip or do it manually?
tried doing it manually and it freezes after the first picture and then i get "can not connect to camera"
Spoke too soon, the same happens to me. But all the rest works including video and the new panorama, too bad.
I installed the one from android police earlier today, works pretty good. I cant take the photosphere pics, but cant view on the phone.
I am on a deodex rooted stock rom. I have both TW camera and 4.2 camera.
Did you add the libs?

I'm running AOKP JB on a build simiar to M1. I had the photo sphere working great. I was even able to view the stitched photo in the new gallery that it installed. But then tonight I went to take some regular pics of the kiddo dressed up for Halloween and it locked up hard. Could view photos in the gallery or take any pictures. I needed up flashing my backup cause I had to take pictures tonight.
I'm guessing someone will come up with a fix soon for it though. I think Android Police or someone on Android Police commented that this is an old build. Maybe that has something to do with......?
Anyone got it working on liquid smooth??

I just came from 4.1 Touchwiz based roms and I really loved how I was able to pause while I'm shooting a video. But I just switched to 4.2 AOSP because I love AOSP, but the camera just doesnt have that feature. Im just wondering is there any modded camera apk that has this function? And why does Touchwiz have it but AOSP doesnt.. :/
It's a tw feature. It's all in the TW framework. I doubt someone could just add it to aosp. I mean, unless Cyanogen does it.

AOSP has always lacked camera features when compared to a manufacturer's own software. It's sort of an Achilles Heel for aosp which Google has been trying to rectify with additions like panoramic mode and now photosphere. Unfortunately photosphere is limited to nexus devices for now in CM10.1.

You can get photosphere working on TW ROMs but you have to do a dance with the focusing if you want to take a normal picture without it force closing. I don't really consider that workable.
Secondly, I made that comment specifically in regards to CM's official statement that photosphere compatibility is restricted to Nexus devices in their nightly builds. I should have clarified.

I believe it can be achieved, because some gapps have their own custom version of the cameras.
If you have the Camera.apk, try to overwrite the current apk after making a backup first, of course.
I asked this same question a long time ago and was told the framework involved would be to extensive. It does work the other way around though. 4.2 camera on touch wiz. I wish it could be done. Probably one of the biggest reasons I still use TW and not aosp

To be honest, no. I've tried many, many different aosp roms and even different cameras, but you'll never get the same stability and especially quality as you will on TW. I have the same problem as you, as soon as I go aosp I eventually go back to TW for signal and camera.
