Only OTA can be flashed in stock recovery, if you are S-ON and have superCID, you will brick if you run a 3.18/3.17 OTA in recovery. It is best to RUU and it is best to have S-OFF prior to RUUing if you were rooted at some point.
If you have bought the phone stock and never rooted/unlocked bootloader, you should have no trouble flashing an OTA zip through stock recovery. RUUing is better though as OTA does not overwrite all partitions.

No you can't flash an RUU through recovery, simple as that. RUU is only available in an exe format.
Sim unlocked doesn't mean anything in terms of modding, it just means your can use any Sim in your phone.
It's most likely the drivers which are causing your problems. Try uninstalling and reinstalling your HTC drivers. And if you have any other phone software on your pc, like Samsung, get rid of that.

If I could add to this, make sure to uninstall everything to do with HTC and HTC Drivers and any other phone drivers/software and just install the latest HTC sync from the HTC website.

Did you check the MD5 of your OTA zip file? That is the only way to know if it's corrupt or not.

follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630459
Should sort you out
If u can access fastboot you are fine. Once in fastboot flash the right boot.img then go to recovery reflash ur rom and reboot
I find it simpler to flash the RUU. Less work

Not quite, he also cannot access his SD card. He needs to follow the link above to flash back to stock recovery, wipe storage to get access to his sd card back, then reflash custom recovery. From there he can copy the correct ROM.zip to his sd card ready for flashing after he fastboot flashes the correct boot.img.

yes. relock your bootloader
from bootloader type fastboot oem lock
then you can flash the 1.85 RUU
just run the file from windows.
After that you can unlock with the same unlock token you got when you unlocked in the first place
then you can install recovery again
but the ruu requires the phone to be on and usb debugging on

Once you have them installed you'll have to reboot in to fastboot and install the official 1.85 RUU.
Also so you know I had a similar experience when I was on cleanrom 2.6 and tried to format and go to 3.0. I had to relock the bootloader, RUU to stock and install a different rom cause 3.0 would just never install for me for whatever reason, it would always bootloop back in to recovery. However I had backed up my NANDROID to my PC so I copied it back over to my SD card after I was on stock then restored it then did an in-place upgrade to 3.1 which worked. I was able to install cleanrom 4 after a wipe without issue.

Flashed Rom & Kernel, no can not sim unlock. Please Help

Like the topic says. Brand new 1x, flashed Cyanogen rom and rohan kernel. Also rooted obviously.
I bought an unlock code online which didn't work. I knew someone w/ ATT and asked them to get me an unlock code. They did and it was the same # that I bought online. What am I doing wrong here. Ive unlocked plenty of phones before so I know the drill. Please help.

Thanks, I think I'll try that. Doing it the "official" way of using the RUU files always errors out in the end. It doesn't give a reason.

I didn't want to take any chances with a 3rd party rom that just so happens to have sense built in, I wanted the original OEM software. I was having troubles because I was having a hard time finding the correct RUU file to flash. Look at these file names and try and decipher them:
RUU_Evita_UL_Cingular_US_1.85.502.3_R2_Radio_0.17.32.09.12_10.86.32.08L_release_262092_signed.exe
Or
RUU_Evita_UL_Cingular_US-1.73.502.2_2FE6772699D8596307CC997452BB8D25.exe
BUT NONE OF THOSE WORKED!
But I found this: htc_one_x_RUU_2.20.502.7_att_us_08022012.exe. and it worked. At least this file name has AT&T in it...

The stock pre-rooted ROMs are all posted in Development as well. You could have just flashed one of those from recovery, instead of having to relock/re-unlock the bootloader and mess with RUUs.

Nope. I mean, not this time I couldn't. What you said is 100% true, I "could" of done that, if I was able to access the External SD card within recovery, which I could NOT do. I could not mount it on the computer, nor could I access it within recovery. I kept getting access denied.

OTA Update Question

Hi! I have an unlocked AT&T (EVITA) HTC One X, it´s S-OFF, bootloader unlocked, rooted, superCID and it has the Sense 5 ROM from T-Mobile (I don´t know if the following changes something: I rooted the phone and removed with Titanium Backup T-Mobile's bloatware). I guess that as I flashed T-Mobile RUU following the forum guide, I must have stock recovery? I received today a 15MB OTA update, is it safe to install? Thanks!
No, you don't usually install any OTA updates on a modified device. Which RUU have you installed? What's the exact filename?
Sent from my Evita
I am in the same situation, but I have CWM Recovery (modified).
How can I find the file name without downloading the update?
In any case, I used titanium backup to freezes the updater and the message from HTC no longer shows up.

You definitely can't install an OTA if you have a custom recovery installed. Don't you still have the RUU on your PC from when you ran it?

Do you have Windows set to hide the file extensions (.exe, .zip, etc.)? If so, you need to turn that off.
Tell us what kind of files those are.
My assumption is that you don't have stock recovery installed, and the rule of thumb is that you don't take OTA updates on a modified device. I don't see the point in this one anyway, the file size would indicate that it's only an update to the T-Mobile bloat apps
