[Q][issue][P3100][no phone audio] Any way to change region or baseband in a ROM? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

# Thanks first to ketut.kumajaya. This is not intended as a complaint against him or his amazing contributions, but need to find a solution and I hope this could also help others in the same situation.
I have a P3100 using ketut.kumajaya's Samsung-based ROM. He states states that it is based on P3100ZSDMD1, region BRI rebranded as XSE - whatever "rebranding" means.
Anyway, with this ROM initially I got zero phone audio in either direction - I couldn't hear anything once the call connected and the other party couldn't hear me. I noticed that this setup defaults to a different set of APNs - somehow I wind up with Fido's (my carrier) LTE APNs. I changed these manually to the original APNs that worked in another ROM - comprising fido-core-appl1.apn and internet.fido.ca - and I could finally hear the call, but the other party still can't hear me and to date this is where I am stuck.
I think my no-audio problem has something to do with the baseband radio or region used. One giveaway sign is that this ROM downloads a different set of APNs (LTE ones!) from my mobile carrier than CM does. I don't know anything about "rebranding" referred-to in the OP of ketut's thread, but maybe this broke something? CM10.1, which uses P3100XXLE3, works fine. Is there any way to change the region and/or baseband, either through a prop. setting, script or manually swapping baseband files from another ROM from http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-P3100?
If anyone knows how I can fix this while retaining ketut's awesome ROM, I would greatly appreciate it. Since the P3100 was never marketed by any carrier in Canada, there is no phone radio specifically for Fido/Rogers' networks in Canada, therefore the only recourse seems to be to use one from a different region that is "most compatible."
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I give "thanks" generously.

[Q] MMS not working on any custom ROM/kernel (not APN-issue)

Greetings!
So, OK, I have an issue with MMS - and AFIK, it's most probably not related to missing or wrong APN-settings.
Any advice or pointers anyone will be able to provide me with will be very much appreciated, and I will buy a Paypal-beer to whomever helps me with the solution.
I am unable to send and receive MMS. It worked on stock ROM, but has not worked on any of the (many) various custom ROMs/kernels I've tried.
It opens / starts up a data-session, data appears to be sent/received, but after a minute or two, I get a failure message "after several attempts, the message was not sent" .
Yes, this sounds like an issue with the APN-settings.
However, I'm pretty sure it's not related to APN.
I have the original APN-settings from stock rom, have wiped all APNs on custom ROM, manually configured APN according to screenshots / notes from stock ROM, which are identical with the carrier's settings, I've used APN Backup on stock ROM and restored the stock APN-settings on the custom ROM, and I've tried replacing the .xml-files (mccmnc and default) from stock system\customize\ with the same files on custom ROMS before flashing.. Since I've had this issue for quite some time, I have tried numerous other stupid suggestions, but I'm out of ideas...
I should mention - MMS never worked on any custom ROM on the Desire I had from Feb 10 till July 11 either - it worked on stock ROM though.
I'm in Norway. My carrier is TDC - the SIM-card is Danish (TDC is Danish or something, don't ask, it's my employer's carrier). As such, the phone is roaming, even though I have a Norwegian tel#. I've enabled roaming everywhere roaming can be enabled.
FWIW, I'm currently on IC 2.4.3-2 (but this crap applies for all ROMs I've tried), and I'm S-OFF.
I've included a logcat from an attempt to send a MMS. Not sure if there's any useful information in there.

If you want to help, please let me know if any other information/logs/files are needed to troubleshoot this.
Thanks so much for any helpful advice in advance!

[Q] How is the Network Operator determined?

Hi Android-Guru's,
I need some help to research a weird issue that is happening for me on almost ANY custom ROM - mostly CyanogenMOD based, but it is consistent as well throughout all current KitKat builds including AOSP and MOKEE.
What happens is, regardless of which network operator I am connected to, the phone in status-bar and settings menu will always show my SIM card operator (Telekom.de). Even when I go to manual network selection menu and the list of operators is retrieved, I get a list of 6 x Telekom.de
Now the argument is correct, that this is cosmetic, it becomes tricky for me when I go abroad - which I do on a daily basis. So selecting the correct foreign network operator is crucial to save on roaming charges e.g. LUXGSM may be cheaper than TANGO, etc. however, I have no way to properly determine that, since the list will simply show 5 entries with "Telekom.de".
I have a XT925 (RAZR HD) and this works perfectly fine on stock. It works also perfectly fine on the early (10.2) CM releases. At some point starting with 4.3 firmware iterations, I started seeing the "wrong" - I researched google for hours and was directed to compare various eri.xml, spn-conf.xml and decompiled the framework-res.apk to see if maybe the methodology for displaying carrier name had changed between working and non-working builds, but couldn't find any difference.
So, since there are probably enough XT925 users out there, what are you seeing? Could this be related to my sim card which is fairly old (4-5years)? Where do I find the code behind carrier display in android?
appreciate your help,
Stefan

thanks for the feedback and the suggestion, Dorian - I tried it, but takes me to the regular network selection screen in the settings that just displays the list of "Telekom.de's" but good thought.
I wonder, what is different with my setup - might this be a baseband or modem issue?
I realized, that my phone number in status screen shows as "unknown" as well - but IMEI shows correctly, not sure if that is related.
still looking actively for an answer.. I tried to go back to stock with RSD Lite to see if any of my baseband or modem files is screwed, but I couldn´t get RSD to recognize my phone.. probably an indication that my device has some kind of issue!?
Anyone any ideas?

FIXED - Freedompop (Sprint), 4G/LTE and custom ROM

It appears that 4G doesn't work with FreedomPop and most custom ROMs. It seems like either custom roms are detected by FreedomPop and disactivated from 4G, or (more likely) most ROMs have the wrong 4G information wrong for FreedomPop.
It could well be that most roms incorrectly detect the FreedomPop 4G network as Sprint. I know a similar problem exists with Credo Mobile, in which case changing the APN network information solves the issue.
Moreover, on reddit someone claims 4G works on cyanogen 7 but not on later version. Maybe that could help solve the issue?
I'd be very happy if one of you could help me figure what is wrong, or if you got 4G to work with a custom ROM on FreedomPop.
Solved!
Basing myself on the Boost Mobile APN fix, I made a new fix that should give 4G/LTE to FreedomPop users.
Download the FreedomPop fix here.
Just download the fix, put it on your phone, boot into your recovery (I suggest Philz), select Install Zip, and install the fix.
This new fix, compared to the previous one has the benefit of providing an extra APN (n.f6.ispsn) that should give superior performances. Moreover, the fix should be more robust, being based on the Boost Mobile fix instead of the Ting fix. Finally, it will also display "FreedomPop" (instead of Sprint) as your provider.
The previous method is also listed here in case it is of interest to you.
Previous method:
I found a way to get 4G on FreedomPop with Cyanogenmod 11! Just follow these simple instructions:
1. Download the Ting APN fix for Android 4.4 on your PC
2. Unzip the Ting APN fix somewhere.
3. Replace the apns-conf.xml file in system/etc/ directory of the unzipped Ting APN fix with this file: http://www.mediafire.com/view/25xozc3p6okf8zw/apns-conf.xml
4. Re-zip the Ting APN fix (with the modified apns-conf.xml), and put in on your phone.
5. Boot to Philz recovery, select Install Zip, and install the modified Ting APN fix. Voila! 4G/LTE should work (make sure to enable it in settings/mobile networks!)
Note that this will work on the S3, but may not work on other phones. To obtain proper apns-conf.xml file, I recommend you flash to 4.3 stock rom, and copy the apns-conf.xml file from /system/etc/apns-conf.xml file of your android and use that instead for step 3.
Freedompop phone to a Sprint Account
Hey guys, I have a nice Freedompop Galaxy s3 that came straight from FP rooted with their proprietary ROM. But the FP ROM is designed to use VOIP to make all calls and seems to do away with any actual cdma(?) dialer altogether. It's a nice phone for $200.00 and I think I'd like to keep it. But when I tried to activate it on my Sprint account, they get an error on their end and don't recognize it.
This question is for you hardcore developers out there. How can I completely reprogram it to a rooted sprint firmware with a dialer and activate it in place of my older HTC 4G LTE. But also "save" the FP ROM for restore if it won't activate. I have til October to return it, so I thought I'd play.
You should also know 1) that FP definitely runs on the sprint network and seems to work exclusively through their 3g/4g lte service (hence the proprietary ROM and no solid phone connectivity); 2) this galaxy is marked as "refurbished" (in pristine condition) and has no Sprint logo on it all (they asked me about this on the sprint chat site); 3) the battery drained pretty fast and the phone would get warm (my HTC never had these issues, though it seems to be common among s3 owners); 4) but all that being said, it's super fast (cf. to EVO) and I think I might enjoy the upgrade at this price.
Thanks for thinkin on it.Masterhanger

If I understand the issue, you got yourself a FreedomPop phone that you wish to activate with Sprint (NOT with FreedomPop)?
If so, I see two potential issues:
1. Your phone IMEI is with FreedomPop, and thus no longer recognized by Sprint. You'll have to ask Sprint to get your IMEI back, if possible.
2. You are using a FreedomPop ROM, and that ROM doesn't allow Sprint activation. Hopefully the actual phone is the same as the Sprint version and only the ROM is different. If you go to Settings and the model number is SPH-L710 then you are probably good. Try installing a Sprint stock ROM and then activate. I strongly recommend you backup your entire phone (including boot and efs) before you do that through, preferably through Odin - but be warned that you may hard brick your phone.
Works, but no sprint optimizer, profile update, or PRL
Hey Merudo,
I really appreciate the fix, thank you for that! However, as you can see in the title, there is no sprint optimizer, profile update or PRL update. That is really important stuff as the networks changes and upgrades all the time. Is there any way that file can be included too? Maybe I'm missing something, but the Tink fix said that there should be a sprint network update for the profile and PRL next to the CyanogenMod updates in About phone in the settings, but I never saw that when I put that on my phone. I have a Galaxy S3 phone I bought from freedomPop, but I absolutely hated the Samsung ROM so I wanted to flash CyanogenMod and now I'm having problems. I hope you have some ideas or can clear things up. Thanks again for the fix, and I saw your post on CyanogenMod site about this, that would be awesome if they did put this file into the ROM!

Hi ColdHot,
Sadly, profile/PRL update on custom ROM is a problem on all Sprint providers (Including Boost, Credo, FreedomPop, Ting, Virgin Mobile, and Sprint itself).
As far as I know, no custom ROM has built-in support for profile/PRL update for any of these providers.
I believe most people deal with the issue by switching back to a stock rom each time they wish to update profile or PRL. I personally switch back and forth between two full backups I make with Philz Touch Recovery.
Please do tell me if you ever find a better way!

OH MY GOODNESS THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN!!! I've seriously tried everything to get my 4G to work on my cyanogenmod infused freedompop (although its a sprint deivce) even by inputting my own apn's I found on the web. I was seriously even considering switching back to sprint just because 3g speeds just weren't cutting it. This finally did the trick. Thanks so much!
So ur fkashed to boostmobile with a freedom pop lte card in getting 4g lte? And boostmobile 3g and voice??

Wicked X on Freedompop
I was running Wicked Sensations when I switched to FP. Nothing but headaches all around. Couldn't place calls off wifi, no 4G, PRL or Profile updates. FP support was useless at trying to resolve.
I then switched to Wicked X and the phone is running smooth. Optimizer, 4G, PRL and Profile updates are all working fine. I'm getting better battery life than my wife's phone we just purchased from FP running their ROM. Seems to be a good ROM so far for FP service.
Thanks, Merudo.
For anyone wondering, I applied this on a 5.0 rom on my S3 and it seems to work great.

thanks for your information,
can you set the messaging (from freedompop) as defaulted dialer?
I tried the cynammod rom, when I used messaging app to dial the original dialer alway launched out, it is very annoying, so I have to flash back to freedompop rom.
has 5.0 the same problem? thanks!
New Fix Disclaimer
Hey Merudo,
I may get an S4 to use with FP and noticed your old fix had a disclaimer that it may not work on non-S3s. Could you clarify if the new fix has the same disclaimer? I see your comment in the .sh file says it handles universal lte builds but just want to make sure before purchasing otherwise I'll probably just go with an S3.
Not working... loosing my mind=(
I just moved and should be looking for work but, instead, I'm loosing my mind trying to make this work on my Sprint S4 running and, albeit, weekly build of CM12. For the love of god, has anybody figured anything out with that? It's really hard to network when I have no way of getting back to people. Not to mention how much I just spent on this phone.
Please help
I haven't been able to get any APN fix to work for freedompop on any Lollipop rom on my S4.
I get 3G without applying any fix, and either nothing happens, or I can't connect at all when using one of the 3 APN fixes I found.
Not sure why they don't work.
Can't seem to get data 3G/4G to work.
Can't seem to get data 3G/4G to work. When I disable wifi, I lose my Sprint(Freedompop) connection. I cant connect to the internet, etc.
I've tried these so far but nothing worked for me:
Universal_vmu_ApnFix-v.R2.zip
Freedompop APNs fix.zip
I love how fast this ROM is and want to make it my daily use phone.
Is there a specific process for getting it to work? Just want to make sure I'm not missing something.
Any advice/help is appreciated.
Freedompop (Sprint) SPH-L710 (Samsung Galaxy S3)
CM version 12-20150120-UNOFFICIAL-d2spr (lollipop 5.0.2 unofficial)
Baseband version: L710VPUDND8
EDIT: Is there a specific way to install to get it to work or? Or any other info I can provide that will help?
My current install went like this: wipe cache, wipe devik, factory reset, install CM12 ROM, install Freedompop APNs fix.zip, install gapps-1p-20141109-signed.zip, install Freedompop messaging, confirm registration, disable wifi, and no 3g/4g.
030415 Edit: My issue is resolved! I dialed *#*#4636#*#* and the TESTING screen came up immediately. Under "Set preferred network type:", I switched it to: LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) in the dropdown menu. I then turned off my WIFI, and LTE immediately showed up! I tested going to a webpage and it works!! I cannot thank you (shakim24 and XDA) enough!!! Turning the WIFI back on is a little tricky and requires some patience, but it will come back on. :good: :victory: :highfive:
Works for Nexus5 CM12 weekly
I am using multi rom with stock as the primary rom. I used that to update PRL and everything works as expected without any modifications. However, the CM12 data settings did not work without the FIX attached in this thread.
What ROM?

Can you tell me what ROM you used, because I have not been able to find one for my S3
Should I download the fix from the attachment or on the link?
They seem to be different.
UPD: one in attachment seem to be better (more settings in the apns-conf.xml)
I'm also attaching another version of this fix with even more APNs for Freedompop. It equals the setup that came with original FreedomPop ROM
i am having same issue and none of these PRL's work. Can you tell me which fix you used before modifying the settings in TESTING menu

You can only make/receive calls when Data is enabled? It doesnt work via wifi? While data is turned off, open the Freedompop Messaging app and see if indicates that you are registered. What happens specifically when you try to make a call? (what errors or messages do you get)

Couldn't find Mobile Network Type

Hello, Recently I have bought an Unlocked At&T LG G3 The seller told me that the phone has a bad IMEI But it's unlocked to be used interntionally. When I received it, It's working fine, except the data network speed trough EDGE is too slow. As yo can see on the screenshot below I couldn't find the option to change the network type. and I'm stuck at "E" which mean EDGE.
http://s14.postimg.org/8r7vs0x27/Quick_Memo_2015_09_09_11_41_43_1.png
The phone's model is LG-D850 and it's running android 4.4.2 KitKat. it has no IMEI when I dial *#06# it shows IMEI: 0-05 on Settings/about phone/Status... it says IMEI: 0
Anyone here to help?
First, here are the possible reasons why you don't have an IMEI:
The phone was reported lost or stolen in the past.
The phone is still active on the owner's wireless carrier account.
There is money owed on the wireless carrier account to which the ESN/MEID/IMEI is connected.
For the reasons above, this community does not support such devices and you will probably not get any help.
But, this can also happen during a bad flash, so to fix the issue, you have 3 options:
Reset, unroot, then root and flash again

Thanks for your reply, I'm not seeking to restore the IMEI. I just want to have the option to switch mobile network type. Should I root the phone and install a custom ROM?

My bad, thought you wanted the IMEI back. In that case, the E (edge) is showing up could be due to Maroc Telecom throttling your connection or their towers could be far way (happens when you travel cross country too). Anyway, if you want to fiddle with network settings and try to get it to work BEFORE attempting to flash any ROM, try the following [3845#*855# 3845#*850#] USSD code from your stock dialer. You will get a hidden menu containing a juicy list of options and settings, so what you are probably looking for is the "LTE-Only" option (I am not sure though, but you can look through the settings).
And as always, attempt the suggestions AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I'm living at a major city, here the 4G works great. So yeah I have to change the mobile network type since it is on EDGE by defaut I guess.
I attemted the USSD code however it says "connection problem or invalid mmi code" after I hit dial. I have also tried a bunch of codes before but no luck.
I think I will falsh the phone that's the option left. I just have rooted the phone, then I will install TWRP and I will try to flash a ROM in it. What do youu suggest me to use from those ROMs posted here ?

I haven't flashed any custom ROMs on my LG, but from experience, each device somehow reacts differently to custom ROMs. For instance, I've flashed my S.G. Note (i717) over 30 times and some ROMs were stable at first then started having issues with them.
The best advice I can give you, is to pick a ROM from the list you posted and check the comments to see if it is stable or too many users have issues with it.

Ever think that it does not have the correct bands for your carrier?

Roaming problem: Unregistered SIM

Hello all!
I have a Canadian A8 (SM-A530W) which was bought used. I currently live in Poland and it works fine here with my Polish T-Mobile SIM.
However, I recently went to Norway and it stopped working completely (no calls/text/data) and it says Unregistered SIM. If I tried to e.g. select a provider manually, I just got the message that searching for providers was not available at the moment.
I tried switching from LTE preferreed network mode to GSM/WDCMA, and I was able to search providers but it still wouldn't connect. I put a local SIM in the phone and it showed the same symptoms, but after switching back to the Polish one it worked for a while (LTE as well) so there is no problem with the radio/bands. However, after enabling/disabling flight mode, it no longer worked.
Anyone have any ideas? From the *#1234# info screen I have the following:
AP: A530WVLS1ARF1
CP: A530WVLS1ARF1
CSC: A530WOYV1ARF1
And the *#272*IMEI# menu shows BMC (Bell mobile canada) as the current CSC.
I saw somewhere that XAC is the "provider-ignorant" CSC for Canada, would it be worth trying to switch to this?
And, does anyone know the difference between the Canadian SM-A530W and the Euro SM-A530F? The hardware looks identical, so if it is only about the firmware maybe I can "switch" to SM-A530F if it would help with my problems...
I still have to try using a foreign SIM here in Poland to see if the same problems occur.
Any ideas and help is appreciated!
Update: I tried a Norwegian SIM here in Poland (so roaming) and it worked perfectly. I switched back and forth several times, no problems...
Anyone have any clue as to what can be causing this behaviour?

The only difference I noticed is it actually needs its kernel because A530W uses different touchscreen firmware, all the rest seems same as A530F. Anyway de-brand Samsung phones is almost impossible without root, since they implemented multi-CSC (OMC) and the phone sets the correct one via checking the sales code in /efs

Wrong lol. Check yourself kernel and you see A530W calls different touchkey drivers (here the firmware file, don't have under my eyes the jackpotlte_can dts file to show you it loads that file instead of classic a5y18 one).

is there a way to flash the touchkey drivers to fix touch problems with custom roms?
