Hello XDA! Even though I love technology, I tend to tread lightly when diving into outside-the-box programming topics. That being said, I recently decided to dip into the rooting pool and I've enjoyed the experience so far. I rooted my S3 (SCH-I535) and added the MOAR rom on July 4th, and everything ran smooth for the first week. Recently, I'm running into an issue where the phone freezes on the lock screen and then goes into a soft reset. It's happened a couple times a day for the last three days or so but once it boots back up it seems to work okay for a while. I've also noticed that the phone turns the screen back on when I hit the power button, repeats about three times before stopping. Is this problem related to the root and rom process at all? I've had the lock screen problem briefly when I had my Droid 2 Global, not sure what happened to fix that (if it fixed at all...). I would ask the MOAR rom forum, but I'm a noob (not sure if it's rom related either). Any help would be appreciated!
p.s. will be loading the new version of MOAR later tonight, maybe that will help?

Try disabling the ripple effect in your lockscreen settings. That is a known issue with any lockscreen other than the stock one.
Seriously a new version of MOAR? Dang it seems like every time I downloaded the new version they're putting up a new one. Which isn't a bad thing but still. Did they say this on the thread?

Where can I find the kernel information?
So with a couple tests, I found that the phone tends to soft reset twice if I enter the wrong swipe password, not sure why it has to freak out like that but it's annoying. That's the only time it's been resetting now. The other issue, screen turning back on after I turn it off with the power button, is still persisting but isn't happening in any discernable pattern.
Okay so I found the kernel information, it says
"3.0.31-1152558
[email protected] #1"
People in the MOAR forum (Verizon S3) have had problems on the reboots with the Blackberry lockscreen, but I'm on Rotary so that doesn't help.

Here we go:
As of update 1.1.7 of mike1986's Android Revolution ROM I experienced a strange issue:
My phone just randomly turns off at least two times a day. I'm not talking about a reproduceable error, since my phone only showed an unresponsive black screen (waking it up by pressing the power button didn't work, too), when I was carrying it in my pocket. I thought at first it was an SOD issue like with the early Android builds for the HD2. But today my phone just literally turned off before my own eyes while I was checking my mail. I wasn't even able to turn it on anymore without performing a battery pull. I was confronted with this issue the third time just a couple of minutes ago. I even did a full wipe and reflashed the ROM (I know, I'm just a Junior Member, but trust me, I know how to this properly), before this happened - again.
Should I just revert to an older version of the ROM or wait for an update? I don't want to just sit around and do nothing about it.
Any help is much appreciated!
Please search the Android Revolution Thread before posting next time.
A lot of people are having these issues. Just install a different kernel and that should fix the problem or go back to 1.1.5 or 1.1.6. I'm waiting for 1.1.8

Hi,
This is a kernel issue.
Try flashing the kernel in my sig using CWM.

I did. Thing is, I'm still a Junior Member, so I'm not allowed to post the experience I had or ask questions about it. I know, it's a ROM-specific question which belongs in the thread of the aforementioned ROM, but asking someone out of the to post it for me would have been about just as much annoying. Still, I'm sorry.
Still, it seemed somehow that no one reported the exact situation, as there were different solutions proposed. But - as I said - I couldn't even add anything to the discussion, since I'm not allowed.
I hope, it didn't disturb you too much.

Thanks for the quick (and hopefully helpful) reply.
I have to wait and see, if it works for me, but if you say so, there must be something true about it.
Anyway, thanks again!
Regards
EDIT: The UI runs pretty smoothly now and my WIFI and mobile data are not lagging anymore. It MUST have been the kernel.

Hi,
It worked for me,and I've had no black screens since.
Yes, reverting to RC Mix 2.3 solves many glitches IMO. Should do the trick while waiting for a better version.
Hey guys,
I tried looking for this issue but I can't seem to find it, I doubt I'm not the only one (I hope I'm not the only one...)
I've been flashing roms for a while now, fiddling with different settings/kernels/etc. and then all of a sudden I'm having issues with my Softkeys. I'll be using the phone and then they just go blank. What also happens is that the Search key gets held down (by a ghost, it seems) and it opens up the voice search option. I've also seen my Back button flicker as if it's being pressed repeatedly.
Right now I'm on CodeName Android 1.4 but I've tried 1.6, CM9 and it seems to be the same issue. I'm assuming that since this is consistant accross all ROMs that it's a hardware issue (I could be wrong) but I'm wondering if this has happened before and if there's a way to fix it.
Thanks gents
Hi friend,
The same happened to me once. It was very weird. I panicked, and locked the phone. Then when I unlocked it everything was as before. It must be some kind of a glitch, coming from CM9 built roms (almost all roms that are around). Try doing a totally clean install with a popular rom and see how it goes.
Now I remember that the same happened once again, when I got a drop of water on my screen, as the touchscreen seems to detect water as a form of touching and then all sort of weird things happened. Hope its a rom issue, not a Touchscreen failure.
Thanks man,
I'm really hoping it's not a hardware issue either as I'm not sure what the process is in terms of sending my phone in for repairs.
I'll try a clean wipe and install tonight and see how it goes.
Thanks again
Update: Alright so I ended up calling Samsung because I had come to the conclusion that it was a hardware issue because every ROM I flashed I had the same damn issue.
I got the ok to send in my phone and all that, I went to return my phone to Stock and when I installed the OEM operating system everything was okay... I seriously doubt that every ROM I downloaded was bugged.
I'm thinking it's just a general glitch or is it possible that 1 ROM I downloaded was bugged and everyone after that inherited the same problem? I don't know...
Hi,
Ever since I installed the [MINI|MINIPRO|ACTIVE|LwW] ExMIUIv4 2.4.13-r1 on my Xperia active, after a week or so I've been getting these random reboots. I am assuming those are reboots because when I look at the phone it wants me to punch in the SIM-PIN again, on the top of that it also asks me for the "SIM network unlock PIN" (on which I have to press the "Dismiss" button to get past). Neither of both issues have occurred with past ROMS.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on the subject?
I've been looking for answers on the ROMS thread, but still haven't found someone with the same issue...(I might have missed it, though I'm still following the thread)
This might be the wrong place to post such a question, but rules are clear and won't let post under the that ROM's developer's thread...maybe one of you could post-forward my question to the guy's thread (the link above).
Nothing still? Geez...
Hi there!
I am not using MIUI, I'm using Spartan but I have recently started to experience the same thing.
It has happened from time to time in the past when using GPS software + loads of other apps but just recently it has started to happen extremely regularly and completely at random on my active too.
One trigger seems to be trying to get the phone to unlock after using GPS software, I slide the unlock toggle and boom, reboot.
I cannot say that I have fixed it at this stage but after reading a few threads this morning I have not had a reboot yet and I have been trying very hard.
What have I done so far: 1) Take out my sim card and rub it vigorously + ensure it is totally clean, reinserted my sim taking extreme care to ensure that it is properly seated. Do the same for the SD card to be on the safe side.
2) Put some paper between your battery and your phone.
This seems absolutely insane, I just bought this damn thing a couple of months ago and it is already screwed. I have tried factory reset + reflashing, numerous different roms and 2 kernels - it just will not stop rebooting now. Driving me insane.
Happened for the first time today whilst I was in a call. Not happy and I have blown my warranty by unlocking bootloader with testpoints
Please let me know if you get anywhere.
Hi,
What type of cellular phone do you have?
I fear that the problem does not lie within the phone, but in the ROM itself. I have a xperia active, and have not ever had any problems with it until I changed roms.
My handset is an Xperia Active also.
There are a number of people experiencing this problem with the Active - many of them are using the latest stock firmware from sony and myself I am using Spartan rom - I do not believe it is specific to any one rom.
Somebody in another forum suggested it might be a problem with the .62 kernel base power management!
What are you usually doing with your phone when it reboots? A lot of us are having the problem when going into or coming out of power saving mode.

Well, last time it rebooted I just did things that I usually do: I surfed the web for a bit, then shut down the wifi, kill the tasks afterwards and went to bed. When I picked up the phone the next day I noticed it had been rebooted (it asked me for my SIMPIN). That's pretty much it...
Now the phone hasn't rebooted in a while, even though I still use it the same way that I did before.
Hi again,
I didn't notice your link until now. I haven't had a reboot (that i know of) in a while now. But I'm gonna try out the battery insulation technique and see if that improves anything for me. I'll post the results as soon as I've tried it out!
Thanks again!
Placing the paper between the phone and the battery seem to have helped! Thanks you! I am mentioning it to others and giving you the kudos for it.
It has been so freezing cold here lately that I'm almost positive it is nothing to do with heat transfer of the battery.
I am using ExMIUI now too. Did you download the update that became available on the 12th?
Since flashing that update I have not had a single reboot. Not counting my chickens yet but fingers crossed.
Well the paper-trick did the trick for me, and yes I am running on the latest version of ExMIUI. So far no reboot for me either!
Hi All,
During the last couple of weeks, with different ROMs I've been experiencing some touch screen issues. I feel like there is a 0.5s delay/lag on the touches which makes using the phone annoying. I can barely type and touches are not really accurate.
Not sure if there is any good app for testing the touchscreen, but I tried one (Test Touch) and as far as I can see, touches are not registered or are intermittently registered when fast touching the screen. (See Video). When I slowly drag the finger, a continuous line is traced.
I couldn't find anyone else having the same issue hence I'm posting this. Thanks for the help.
Current ROM: Temasek's UNOFFICIAL Build, 10.1, CM 12.1 .
Stock kernel.
Edit: Ram use is always lower than 50% and CPU usage is low.

You're not the only one- I opened a thread about this. Seems as something happened as people updated to android 5.x as did with me.
Hopefully someone can figure something out!
Seems more like an input lag- like you mentioned. Really annoying and makes it hard to type fast or use swype function.

I've been having this issue too! I thought it was the ROM, but I am on my second one now with the same touch lag . I didn't have the issue in 5.0, though. I might consider downgrading and hope that that fixes my issue. Any help on this would be much appreciated

Happy to know I am not the only one having this issue , good that we are on the same boat.
I'm travelling in a few days and can't go abroad with the phone in this "working" conditions so I will have to downgrade for sure. Any 5.0 ROM to recommend? A solution for 5.1 would be better
haha I was on Blisspop for a long time before moving to 5.1, it's a fantastic ROM!

I flashed Slim ROM, touches delay improved a bit but I was experiencing some lag on the hardware keys.
I just flashed last bacon firmware (from April 09) and RobbieL811 ROM and seems to be running smoothly, I wonder if it was a firmware issue. Thoughts?
Right, I have the same bloody problem, and I'm seriously thinking of going back to kit kat. What the hell happened, it worked perfectly. Does everybody have an unlocked bootloader? COS12 worked ok, lagged when hot, only after I unlocked the bootloader did it all go to ****. I just hope it'll go back to normal on KK and it isn't a permanent thing now..

I have an unlocked bootloader and have moved from 11S to 12S and find its a lot better. I've seen people say they find the update better and some who have issues but your boot loader shouldnt really come into it. How did you update, what did you do since unlocking your bootloader?

Went with COS12 for a while, then tried a 5.1 rom and it started going down from there. COS12 lagged a lot when the phone was charging, it got very hot for a while, and then cooled down. I don't know why touchscreen issues started happening, it worked ok for some time after installing 5.1, then for instance the settings app started scrolling slowly, the notification panel as well, some touches stopped being registered.. It's a weird issue, because it's not lagging, like skipping or so, but mostly it feels like the phone is in slow motion.

Same happens to mine.
I flashed 3 different ROMs today, 5.1 and 5.0, it was working fine for a few hours with one of them but after that It started with serious problems, to the point of nearly not registering any touch. After a reboot it improved a bit but it makes the phone unusable. I'm flying abroad in less than 12hrs and really need the phone.
Flashing a stock ROM or going to kit kat are the only options I see now.
Edit: Here I found some useful post, they state it's hardware not software.

we're not alone man, multiple threads are popping up with people suffering from similar issues, including on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/33ky0u/open_post_to_oneplus_with_all_our_love_and/
I am having the same severe issues as well.
The nightmare begun after the 05Q update.
Ever since that update, no matter what I've tried, the touch problem is here.
I've tried numerous Roms + kernels combinations with no use.
OP support was trying twice to reset my phone to full factory reset to both Oxygen & CM11s with no use.
That is so frustrating.
i have the same problem, but only when i go outside and the weather is nice
Hello everyone,
This is my first post on XDA so please forgive me if I'm doing something wrong (I also posted in the T-Mobile S6 Forum).
So my story, I got a refurbished unit G920T at Swappa, I updated to the newest version directly (G920TUVU3DOI1) and it was working fine for the first week or so. Then the reboots started happening, I didn't give it too much thought but looked into it anyways.
At first I thought it was a problem with the WiFi and I tried to keep it off for a while, and it did work for a day but again the restarts kept happening, and now with the phone turning off during the night (no apparent loss in battery mind you).
Then I went to rooting and custom kernels.
I installed unikernel v8-0002 through Odin3_v3.10.6 and I tried removing some Samsung apps with TitaniumBackup in case there was some conflict happening but the restarts kept happening.
Then I installed a custom ROM, "XtreStoLite_ROM_v2.4_Deo-Mod-Edition_XXU3COI9_G920-5-F-I-T-W8-K-L-S" to be more specific.
And to my surprise it worked great, no restarts or shutdowns for about 2-3 weeks, it was great!
But then out of the blue the restarts started happening, they started slow, about 2-3 a day.
But after a few days they went to 10-20 and after that 100-200 a day.
Something was definitely wrong. So I installed the original firmware again (G920TUVU3DOI1_G920TTMB3DOI1_G920TUVU3DOI1_HOME) and booted to the stock firmware, restarts kept happening of course (didn't expect them to stop).
So I retreaded my steps and installed multiple other kernels (Unikernel V9, Vindicator, multiple different flavors of them). Also I installed multiple ROMs (Arrow_ROM_v6.0.0, and DN5 - S6 FLAT - EDGE v4 OJ5 - deodex) but nothing seems to work;
I did multiple wipes, storage wipes, cache wipes, factory resets (from GUI and twrp-2.8.7.2-zeroflte) but every time the same thing happens.
I did notice that the phone stutters and freezes, a behavior that I have not experienced before.
I installed CatLog and got multiple log files when the phone restarts but all of them are different and there is no "pattern" to be found (at least in first inspection). I want to upload them but my post count prohibits it.
Please let me know what can I do, I will reply to your questions ASAP so at least I can get some light into what is happening.
Thank you!
Well, if this is happening across multiple roms/software it can only really be hardware at fault I would think?

Hello!
After I posted this I ended up talking to T-Mobile and apparently the phone still is under warranty and they sent me a shipping label to return the phone and get another one from them.
Which is good but also I tripped KNOX but I don't know how much they care about that.
Fingers crossed I guess.
Thank you for replying!
Good to hear of a semi positive result! Let us know!
