the last straw - goodbye android, goodbye Google - General Topics

Recently Google put a notice in my phone that they were discontinuing Google Latitude and if I wanted to continue using similar location service I would need to go to Google+
I don't like being funneled into places I have no interest in going.
What other service (besides Google Reader) will they suddenly pull the rug out from their users?
I don't like Microsoft because of their monopolistic intent nor Apple for similar reasons.
That leaves Linux or Firefox and when there will be a decent phone sporting either os I will jump on it

They killed Latitude? *victory dance*
It ate battery, it kept track of you...

Surely you didn't think this out.
Latitude wasn't killed.
It was mearly moved to Google+.

This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen.

They decided to stop supporting it. That isn't exactly a "evil corporation" move, you can still download whatever GPS app you want.

Yeah,
they decided to stop supporting it but only to get you to use Google+ and also to get you to persuade all the friends you have on your latitude list to also join Google+.
Yes, there are other share location applications but it is a hassle to start all over again after "do no evil" Google pulls the rug from under you.
What other services will Google discontinue in order to get you to move where they want you to?

I get what you mean. I don't really want to be forced to use services either. I know I don't have any interest, at least for now, to use Google+

Yes, and every other update turned it back on inside google maps, leading to yet another few thousand complaints about "crap phone dies in 7 hours" on tech-support helpdesks...
As for opt in, locationservices doesnt work without latitude anymore on Maps. Hasnt for a while now.

Google Android event on the 16th

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/11/google-announces-android-special-event-for-november-16th-in-lo/
This could be what we were all waiting for...
The image has T-mobile sign... fingers crossed.
As many people around the web have been stating, the "goes to eleven" reference is a Spinal Tap reference, meaning this is probably something to do with Google Music.
However, this was posted on Android's G+ page about an hour and a half ago: https://plus.google.com/u/0/104629412415657030658/posts/UggjKRhTn58
I knew someone would post this so I didn't. Lol. Yeah, could be more to it, but this is definitely something about google music

If it's for a music thing, why is there a giant T-Mobile logo on the building in the photo?

Could be more, but the Beatles on the wall of the building
I think it is primarily going to be for Google Music (given the plethora of references to music on the pic) but I imagine they are going to announce some big info about the gNexus (more likely GSM) right at the end of the event (or anytime.. but at the end.. would be cooler)..
This could be the event that never happened in the US for the nexus.. Googles way of making it up to us by revealing maybe a release date/pricing of unlocked 32GB nexus in the US.. through sammy/google site?
Something to do with this: http://stupiddope.com/2011/10/05/mr-brainwash-artist-invitation-2011-art-show/
But also Android (obviously), T-Mobile, and Spinal Tap.
Hmm...
So TMO and the billboard are added. I thought the billboard meant something but couldnt figure out what. The left hands make a heart

Only T-Mobile and the Android logo. But I can't figure out what these things have to do with Mr. Brainwash, his ArtShow2011, and Spinal Tap. Google Music is about...music, but ArtShow2011 is a visual art show. Maybe they are just using the space?
Read from a post on Engadget that made sense to me. Tmo introduced the myTouch Fender (Fender is on the picture) awhile ago. So, it's probably a new phone that has the Fender name tied to it or another special edition. It revolves around the whole music theme.
I'm hoping I'm wrong though.

Improvements towards messaging app bbm/imessages

So as much as I love android there is one thing that I kinda of envy when it comes to blackberrys and Iphones and and that would be bbm/imessages. Now im well aware there are apps out there like gtalk or chaton which acts like imessages but I personally would like to see this built into the messaging app itself. I am no developer or anything but it seems that imessages works on the device when it is linked towards the email used for the app store so would it not be easy for google to implement this into their os? I mean on the start up of each android device it does ask you for your gmail password so I was just thinking that this just may be a really nice feature to come out with key lime pie or something. Does anyone else feel this way?
Is this any different from Google Talk? Instant Messaging tied to the Gmail account, rather than the phone number. It's just not as immensely popular.

Well thats the thing. GTalk is perfect but for example all of my friends who own android products havent even heard of it. Im just thinking if google linked GTalk to a phone number then it could be good.
I agree. This would be amazing.
Yes that would be awesome

So I guess a better question is what are the odds of this actually being implemented into the next update?
I have to admit that I do miss bbm from when I used blackberry's. But besides that mild feeling of exclusivity I don't really think its much different thn just texting

Ya i hear ya. I guess the only reason I feel something like Imessages would be helpful is because if we are in places with almost no service but there is wifi it would be pretty amazing. Then again i would be scared for samsung or google to implement this because the last thing we need is another apple lawsuit haha

if google would make it part of the steup wizard and allow images/sounds to be transferred over gtalk, it would be amazing.

Your only a small percentage of the millions of people in the US is worried about. Don't like them watching or spying on you? Do we have a browser yet?

I know this isn't Android anymore, but has anyone pulled/ported the stock Tizen browser from Tizen OS? I assume it would be easy enough to sideload this to the device via USB Debugging, right?

While we wait, can you share what you think would be a useful scenario where pulling up a webpage on a tiny watchscreen will be more convenient than just pulling out your phone and doing it that way? I'm really curious and maybe you have a great idea I haven't considered.

Either of those scenarios you just mentioned are great, but voice commands w/ S Voice would be more useful (if it can even do this - I know Google Now can get me this info from my phone, but S Voice on the Gear currently just comes back and says "sorry, we couldn't find the answer to your question".
Also, if your hands are full, what makes you think that opening up and typing a web address on the watch's little screen will be "hands free"? You can't even interact with the watch without touching it with your other hand.

How would you navigate an app or browser without using you hands/fingers? Your football score scenario is already accomplished via ESPNs Score Center app. It can be configured to send notifications based on team preferences (i.e. notify of scoring plays during your fav team games).
And now that I think about it, if only the Google Maps app could be configured to send turn-by-turn notifications, we would sort of have GPS on our Gears.

oh I forgot about the turn by turn functionality - Pebbles can do this, even though I never got a chance to use it since my phone is mounted on my dashboard. Would be useful when walking in a city, though - without keeping your phone out. The problem of course is the watchscreen turns off again and you have to touch the watch and navigate to the app again to see the next direction.

Yep, and shortly after I posted this I came up with an article about that Pebble feature... however, it seems it is limited to the iOS version of Google Maps because it is able to send normal push notifications for each turn.

Where are Google accounts stored in 7.0?

Seems like Google has changed how accounts are stored on the phone in 7.0. Backing up "Accounts" in Titanium Backup, which backs up accounts.db, no longer works. Seems that accounts.db no longer exists.
Anyone know where Google accounts are stored on the phone in 7.0?

That will never completely happen. Open source is seen as a security threat to many companies. BB is dieing off and will soon be a software only company. Apple will always have a place due to their security as well as most people prefer something that just works. I cant say I blame them as I have thought about it myself and you would be amazed at how many Android devs use an Iphone as their daily device.

I stumbled across this thread during my search, but while I found the answer somewhere else maybe it could help the next lost soul on it's search for revelation:
On Android 7, the accounts.db are now located on
/data/system_de/0/accounts_de.db And
/data/system_ce/0/accounts_ce.db
You'll need to copy both of the files to your new device, it worked for the most accounts. The only account I had to reconfigure was my email exchange
