Replace phone icon - HTC One S

I am on stock jb deodexed. I wanted to replace the phone icon, so I rename the one in Settings.apk and put in another one. To put the icon in the apk, I had to de-compress(unzip). The problem that I have: what zip format do I use. The normal(that come to almost(7Mb) or store(18Mb). Latter on, I have to rename the .zip to .apk. Is there a program that will let me decompress the app on phone and replace the icon?. That way I will not have to deal with 7z or winrar. Thanks.

is it possible to make this changes without root?

I do not think that system icons can be replaced without the root. I have hboot unlock and S=OFF.

I use Application Multi- Tool to extract the app. I replace the stock with mine icon. Zipped and pushed in. Still "no cigars". Where else could be the icon?. Why the HTC have to make this phone so complicated. It would be much easy to just make one Icon folder and drop in all the icons. Could it be that the phone icon is in Phone.apk?. Will try that.

Don't unzip it, just open it with total commander on your phone or7zip on pc. If on pc, just delete the old png, then drag and drop the new png.
You will also need to sign the apk. Use zip signer from market And sign with auto test key.
The icon Is in other places though. Such as framework-htc-res.apk in your /system/framework/ folder. Do the same with this, but do not sign.
Push these files to the appropriate places then reboot.

I replaced the icon in Settings.apk, Phone.apk and framework-htc-res.apk but still "no cigars". Any suggestions?. I found another phone icon in htc.resource.apk will try to replace there too.

Got it
I finally got it. I had to replace in co.htc.resource.apk and got new phone icon. Attached home screen. Time to back up and mess with more icons.
Thanks for help.

I am trying to replace the "icon_launcher_programs" icon, but so far with no luck. I replaced in com.htc.resources.apk and in Settings.apk, but still "no cigars". It is the ugly icon that launch applications screen in the middle. That icon is not present in framework_htc_resources.apk. Any one know where that icon is "hiding" from me?. Thanks.

That would be in an m10 file in the skin apk. You need to use virtuous ten studio for that.

I am using the Steel skin. I open the steel.apk in VT10 and go to M10. I still can not figure out of what button is that. Looking at all the buttons, none look like the app start button(middle). Do you know what is the filename of that button?. Thanks.

I found it. It was in fusion/Default. I love the VTS. So easy to manipulate the icons and build back the apk. No I have to find in xml the size and maybe increase size. The default size is 39X39 and barely visible. I got some work to do, as I have to make space for larger icon. Slowly learning the VTS. My adventure just begin. Thanks for the help.

[REQ] Metamorph to remove 'phone' text from black droid launcher

I can't find the original post on this forum that contained the attachment, so I am attaching it here. I'm not sure what was changed in the file to get it to do it. Was hoping I could find more info from the person who made it... but I can't find the post.
Can anyone help with this, please?
Thanks!
That's weird. I just got a PM about an hour ago regarding the same question. When the "mods" thread got "cleaned up" much of the stuff went missing, unfortunately.
The phone text is cleared out in:
Rosie.apk\res\layout-port\button_bar.xml
Attached is a patched XML file that will clear the text out. You will still need to replace the applicable .png files with transparent ones, for example, if you want to remove the phone icon, etc.
Download <--- Right click to save the file, otherwise, it will attempt to load in your browser.

Thanks. That worked in removing the phone text, but it didn't center the phone icon on the button. Can you do that, too?
I can't seem to find the file that centers the phone image onto the middle button for the launcher. I've tried launcher.xml but no dice. bb_btn_middle.xml perhaps?
Also, could you provide some insight into what folders to edit? What is mdpi, land, port? Which folders get edited with our phone? I find myself constantly playing a guessing game with which folder the edits go into.
EDIT: Ok, it turns out it was the button_bar.xml file. Now that I knew that, I pulled it out of the zip in the first post and the phone icon is centered. Attached just the xml.

I didn't need to edit the actual png, it was just something in the xml file that centered the placement of it. It's all fixed.
My goal is all Metamorph's with the black droid launcher with phone text removed, all clear widgets (Digital Clock Widget, GenieWidget, pure calendar, pure music player, power control widget, etc). Genie, pure calendar/music is done. Digital Clock Widget is working, but tapping on it to edit the alarm is busted since the WorldClock was removed for the lockscreen...
I'm sick of remembering which files were editted in the apk files to achieve the mods... Metamorphing will make everything much easier, but it's a process to figure out which files were edited, since repacking the zipfiles usually modifies the 'modified date'.

[THEME] Desire Notification Bar for Cyanogen Mod (tested and working with 6.0.0 rc1)

Disclaimer
Use these instructions at your own risk.
What happens if it doesnt work?
Worst case scenario: You get a heart attack thinking you bricked your phone
More likely scenario: It works and you end up happy with a nice looking desire bar on your N1.
Less likely scenario: You get a boot loop, which can be easily fixed by re-flashing CM (you wont even lose data)
Instructions - Method 1, use MetaMorph (probably the easiest method):
1. Use CyanogenMod settings to change clock/date/notification text to light grey/white color (or use this XML)
2. Install MetaMorph and BusyBox from market
3. Download the morph/s below and move them to your phone
4. Apply the morph using MetaMorph
Morphs (also available at androidmorph.com):
desire_notification_bar.zip Just the original desire bar + desire icons + stock pulldown menu
Desirebar-Black-Pulldown.zip Desire bar + desire icons + desire pull down (see screenshot) - thanks to Saphroxx
stock_battery_icon.zip Changes your battery icon back to the one included in the stock rom
Alternative methods to get the black desire bar (no longer supported):
Method 2, use my framework-res.apk:
1. Use Spare Parts to change clock/date/notification text to light grey/white color (or use this XML)
2. Download framework-res_XXX.apk and rename it to framework-res.apk
3. adb remount
4. adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/
5. reboot (if phone doesnt reboot by itself)
Download framework-res.apk:
CM 5.0.7.1 (n1gapps)
CM 5.0.8 (gapps-passion-EPF30-signed, radio-4.06.00.12_7)
Method 3, create your own framework-res.apk:
1. Use Spare Parts to change clock/date/notification text to light grey/white color (or use this XML)
2. Download this zip containing the PNGs for the desire bar
3. adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk framework-res.apk
4. Open the framework-res.apk on your pc using winrar (or any other packaging software that supports adding files to archives without compression)
5. Add the PNGs in the res.zip file to the framework-res.apk file (put them into \res\drawable-hdpi) without using compression! ("store" method)
6. adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/
7. Reboot, if phone doesnt reboot by itself
Note: If after the update installing apps from the market causes FCs go to settings/apps/manage apps/market and hit "delete updates"

can we have one for froyo ?
Desirebar-BlackPulldown-SenseBatteryIcons can be found in my signature
Here is the one I am using on 5.0.8
I take no credit or responsibility for it, i pulled the png files from another apk and put them in this one that was on my phone after updating to CM5.0.8.
make sure when you push it you rename it to the proper name
has anyone tried this with TBA?
I am sorry for hijacking this thread but is there any way to change the notification bar on a stock Froyo FRF72 without rooting?
I've had enough of the white taskbar!
This looks great, only thing that doesent fit my taste is the black color of the provider if you drag down the notifications bar. Anyway I can change it to white color?

I don't know the correct english terms for the settings menu entries since im using a german version. But the option should be close to the bottom (5th from the bottom) in the spare parts menu under "General" -> "Operator Color"
Is there any way that you could add the battery percent like the regular CyanogenMod notification bar?

Yes, it works. After applying this Desire Notification Bar for 5.0.8, I opened TrackBallAlert and was able to succesfully Patch CM5 to use with TBA.
Last update from CM5.0.6 to CM5.0.7.1, I had to uninstall TBA and re-install, which is not needed when upgrading from CM5.0.7.1 to CM5.0.8.
BUMP: Is it possible to morph the dropdownmenu aswell so it's black? Or help me hand so I can do it myself and provide you afterwards? Would be awesome!
The font-color can easily be modified to white in SpareParts.
EDIT: I figured it out myself how to make a morph. In attachment you can find XebozZ' awesome Desirebar, with black Pulldown Menu added by myself. Also tested with TrackBall Alert and it works. You will have to change the font settings of the provider to white again in SpareParts if you use the Desire-Black-Pulldown.

Enjoy!

The battery percentage works just like with the stock battery icon. If it doesnt show up try to disable it, reboot, enable and reboot again.
In case you want the stock battery icon check out my first post, i just added a morph that restores the original icon.

Pretty sure the control file is there, it's called Desire-Black-Pulldown.thm.
Make sure you do not rename unzipped content etc.
Applying should only take half a minute and your phone will show a message that it will reboot.

Modding Audio Manager Pro

Hey guys,
I'm trying to finish up my new homescreens, and my last widget is Audio Manager Pro. I've tried the metamorph on it, but it wasn't working. I've also tried to manually open the .apk and edit the .pngs i needed to edit, but have issues getting it signed. Any modders have some free time to help a theme noob?
What I am trying to do is make the background .pngs for the widgets transparent. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Bump, any help or suggestions would be great!
Sent from my Evo.
I will be keeping an eye on this. The transparent skin they have for AM is transparent BUT the little bars that show levels are yellow, orange, and green or red or some yucky (to me) color combo! (they match NONE of the wallpapers I use) I wrote the developer this morning and asked for transparent but with like white, or shiny metallic bars ....
Yea, the am transparent skin on the market isn't really fully transparent. I also want the background to the fuxia skin transparent.
Sent from my Evo.
I answered my own question, but I thought I'd share what I did to make it happen.
1. adb pulled the apk
2. Opened the .apk in betterzip (mac user) WITHOUT EXTRACTING, and pulled the folders that needed editing.
3. Edited .pngs in Photoshop
4. Dragged the folders back into Betterzip into the correct directories.
5. Saved the changes to the .apk
6. adb pushed the .apk to /system/app
7. Profit!
Hopefully that helped someone!
That would help me IF i knew what I was doing ... I don't have Photoshop and I def don't know how to do that.
I did see under standalone's on this following link, 6th one down had it. Isn't that it? I tried it but it didnt' work for me. Just like the Genie one won't. Everything else my phone had taken easy.

[Theme] Spearoid's Clean and Blue

I have finally taken the time to try to get my icons the way I want them to look on this phone. I stopped developing my tweaking skills in the days of WinMo 6.5, but I decided to tinker with a framework-res.apk in one of Trailblazer's mods to swap out all the icons I wanted to change.
After sifting through many other themes mostly made for the Fascinate, I have repacked the file with the icons I wanted. I also blanked out the Ticker History button and the "No Data" button for the Weather on the Ticker. See Screenshot.
I am sure there is a better way to install this file, but I took the framework-res file out of Trailblazer's Touchwiz Accurate Theme, replaced all the icons I wanted in the file and then I copied it back into his .zip file. I was then able to flash the .zip file in Recovery. I am sure you can use Root Explorer or some sort of file manager program to replace the file, but I haven't had the best of luck replacing files that way so I went with what I knew would work.
I figured I would share my work in case anyone else has wanted a different look for their Continuum.

Awesome! I have one question for you though... You stated you "blanked out the Ticker History button and the "No Data" button for the Weather"... Are the blanked out so if your finger/hand/palm, what ever touches those areas, it doesn't open the damn address search (for weather) or the ticker history? If that is the case, I have been wanting something like this for a while, I just haven't had the time to dive into exploring this, and TrailBlazer seemed to have been working on it, so I figured I'd wait for him. Thanks dude!
I've been working on my batch so that it actually removes the buttons, like totally (not just blank images)... Finished it yesterday, just need someone to test it any volunteers? Lol

Yeah, I've had little luck doing file replacements on vital system files that way.
I took the .apk in the OP and overwrote that file in Trailblazer's Touchwiz Accurate theme .zip file.
I open Trailblazer's zip file with a program like WinRar....then browse to the system/framework folder...and drag and drop my new .apk into that folder....it overwrites...and I copy the zip file to my SD card and flash from recovery.
all is good from there
I wish I knew how to take files like these and put them in a new flashable zip file. I'd probably be more inclined to do more tweaking if I could
And Moon Shadow, they are just transparent png files. The buttons still function.
But I'm with you, I'd much rather have them be invisible AND non-functioning
Trailblazer, post up the link. Now that I have this thing working right, again, I'll beta

Theming for dummies - replace the icons inside themes from Samsung's Store - no root

So this is a simple how to aimed to people with unrooted phones that still want to replace the icons inside Samsung Themes.
First of all, just a bit of theory
1) Samsung Thems are simple apk files, so you can edit them and re-install without any trouble, they don't need a particular signature by Samsung.
2) The icons inside such themes are in qmg format, which is a proprietary format that cannot be converted without Samsung Theme designer's kit or by using the built-in converter which is in our phones... It's something that packs a png file and an xml one andnot even imagemagick for Linux can convert it.... No problem, you can replace qmg files in themes with png files flawlessly, you just need to rename them as png
So, you need apk extractor (see play store) which can extract installed apk very easily (even system files) without root and apkeditor pro (see play store as well) wich is a very handy tool for minimal decompiling. I am not affiliated to apk editor pro and you can obviously do the same thing with apk tool and a pc, though this simple how to is for 'noob dummy themers' and it makes more sense to use just your phone than apktool.
Once you have installed such apps, open apk extractor and look for the apk you must edit. Let's say you want to edit the material theme by Cambunch (see galaxy store). So, you will find two apk files with cambunch etc.... Choose the first one, the one with the words appicon inside and extract it. It will be placed into the folder ExtractedApk
I don't like, in such theme, the icons for calendar and messages, which are green and yellow, so I replaced them with google original ones. Just download them somewhere and rename them to qmg. I mean, if the original file was named message.png, just rename it to message.qmg for example.
Now open apk editor pro and choose to edit an apk file, go to ExtractedApk folder, choose the theme you have extracted and choose simple edit....
You should see a partially decompiled apk.... Go to res folder and then open the drawable etc.. folder
Inside that folder you'll see several qmg files... Look for the one that refers to message (the names are quite self explanatory) and click the 'pen' option, then use the file manager to choose the icon message.qmg you've saved as said above and replace the original one with the new icon. It can obviously been done with any icon inside that folder.
Now follow the steps suggested by the app itself and install the new apk over the former and your theme will have been updated.
If the theme had already been applied, move to a different one (even the default one) and then apply it back to see the changes.
Very simple
Just as a sample, this is the apk modded with calendar and message icon respectively in blue and light blue like the original ones by Google. It must be installed as an update of the nice theme by Cameron Bunch

It is not so simple, you need apktool and a pc. Apk editor is unable to fully decompile the apk files of samsung themes.
To be honest, I haven't played with themes yet and I don't exactly know how they are applied to keyboard, notification bar and so on.
Cool! Thanks for posting this. I used this to edit the soft keys on my last LG, but didn't realize it would work for themes, too. Got some editing to do when I get back from my next trip.

Glad you appreciate it
I googled a little bit and saw that you can't make a theme from scratch without Samsung's proprietary software which is reserved to approved designers only, but still it should be possible to edit a free theme and changing it into something different. I mean, not only the icons, even the Ui. At least for the things that this theme engine allows to be themed.
I would like a ubuntu touch theme or a Sony xperia one, which are not available in the theme store, but atm I have just been able to replace the icons... I have to get some spare time to decompile a theme on my pc
Why several APK files inside?
Hi,
Followed the procedure. But when choose simple edit, it shows several apk files inside the main apk file. how to replace the images?
I replied to your PM. It depends on the theme.

I have the same issue with sd-Black theme. Only apk files in assets folder, no res folder. Any way to do it?
I am sorry, but I am now on Echoerom note 7 port which has the new theme store, so I can't directly check the old themes for the s7.
Anyway, when I posted this thread, I had had a look only at a couple of themes, which were very simple do as the ones by Cameronbunch. In the following day I realised that in the theme store there a basically to kind of themes and the ones of the second kind are much more complicated to edit.
To be honest, after opening this short thread, I haven't spent any time in editing themes, but I don't think apk editor is powerful enough for the themes of the second kind. You'd better go with apktool, since you need to decompile not only the main apk, but even the ones inside it.
Sorry for not being very helpful.
I have req for someone with root, can you share here themes from store: Athletics sports and Sparkle. I want to mix it and change some things. Thanks in advance.
the easiest way: use "awesome icons" app from google play (free); than, install any icon pack that you like (I prefer Note 7 icon pack), open the mentioned app and it will give you the possibility to change any icon from each app installed in the phone, keeping the functionality (eg: unread count badge for emails); you can opt for an icon in the icon pack or a picture or any .png/.jpg etc file
