It is in fact Read Only Memory..
When you buy a phone, your /system partition is Read-Only.. When you root your phone, you can change it to R/W..
Custom ROMs are custom User built Read Only Memories which mostly come with root..
Have fun explaining to your noob sis..
(I never tell all this Android stuff to my sis, tried it once but went crazy explaining it to her cuz its Greek language to her..)

Your good intent aside, if you post your response with clear English then it may get a better response. I had trouble reading anything you said.
It only takes two seconds to use a spell checker and correct punctuation.
You might start with your signature.
With that said, I hate it when people don't say "thanks" when someone tries to help.
Ok, let's say something INTERESTING... I'm a advance user, I just was asking for a easy ROM install, if you don't have the answer or you are not polite... bye then.

you say you are 'a advanced user' but you dont know what CWM is....you need to read up on the terminology used here.
you are likely to brick your device by not understanding what you are doing. this website isnt a 'make your device cool' site. its a learning tool for devs/hackers/enthusiasts to learn and share ideas and work. if you dont comprehend what you are doing, then you dont need to be hacking on your device.
Also xda can be entertainment i get alot of laughs reading some posts on here..... and that advances my good mood.

First android device, have a question.

Hey , I'm new here so ill say hi too. Anyways , a week ago I got a Desire S for my birthday and before i had an ipod touch. I know that jailbreaking an ios device is easy and if you mess up you simply restore. What about an android device? What are the risks of rootibg and can you restore itback to its original state for warranty purposes? Are the roms there any roms available for daily use? ( 3.2.5, sense 3.5 , ice cream sandwich? ) Thanks in advance
Oh and, if ill decide to root what should I do / save to uunroot?
Android's are usually quite easy to restore. Just download the RUU thingy, available on this forum.
this thread is really good
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601
just give a good read through all the threads in the guide section.
I've found that it's not easy to brick an android device or mess something up. All you need is a backup of your rom (which you'll understand after reading the guides) and you should be safe.
Well all I need to do is save my ROM? How do I do that?
Also what are kernels and radios and hboots? completely newbie to this..

Well I couldn't really find anything about kernels and radios, and to backup my ROM I need a rooted device? What if its too late? How can I know if I have a faulty chip?I don't want to wreck my device...
Well there's not much you can do if your chip is faulty, but you can do things to stop your phone breaking.
Never pull the battery out is a key one. If you have to, try pressing volume up + down and the power button at the same time. There are also other things you should do. Ben Pyett is great with helping about the eMMC problem
The radio and hboot is something you shouldn't worry about. I've never bothered messing around with them and you really don't need to.
Kernels are flashed in the same way as ROMs. Through clockworkmod recovery or 4ext recovery. Whichever you want. All you have to do is choose the right one for the ROM you're flashing ie a sense kernel for a sense rom. In the desire s section you'll find 3 sense kernels and 1 aosp kernel. AOSP are ROMs like cyanogenmod which don't have any GUIs like sense. With two of the kernels ( Hyperion and Endymion) you must choose the right version of sense. Hyperion is for sense 3.0 and Endymion is for sense 3.5 and the unity kernel can be used for any version of sense.
Making a backup is easy. All you have to do is go into recovery and select the backup and restore option and choose backup. You must do this before flashing a custom ROM because if the install fails you'll have something to fall back on.
I've tried my best but if you still have more questions then ask.

Always make a nandroid backup, it just means if anything goes wrong you should be able to restore your phone to it's exact previous state.

Yep, the free version of titanium only allows one by one backup, but if you get the full version it can do multiple backups in one go
4ext recovery control is a paid app too, but I cannot stress how worth it it is!

Er can anyone send me Swype.apk and libSwypeCore.so? Wanna install swype..
Also , my dad really liked the 3.5 update so I tried doing the same on his Desire and well when its reaches "zerging root" it says that it failed with a sad smiley..
Could it be because he has a update available but won't install it? ( As its impossible for him because at the end of the New firmware download it says damaged file or something.. )

Hi
I if you use sense 3.5, swype is already built in. Go to the keyboard settings and turn htc trace on.
Swype away!
However if you want full swype, its a beta, I recommend just signing up on their website to get the apk, its free
Not to sure about your dads desire, best bet is to ask the desire forum
Hope it helps...

there's the swype installer, that's what you need to install swype, but i think you still have to sign up. Might be wrong though.

Uh, I was just looking up on MIUI rom and I have got a question. Why is CM more popular? MIUI seems like a much nicer experience.
MIUI is much newer, supports quite few devices and it's basically based on CM. To get MIUI u must first have CM /AOSP.

How do you make an Odin flash able ROM and one for CWM?

I've heard that NVflash is a lower level of firmware flashing than Odin and NVflash makes Optimus 2x almost inbrickable.
Is it possible that we can have this method for our phones too?

Odin flashable roms aren't easy to make! And CWM needs an Updater-Script which have to be written according to our custom rom n file structure! Take a look at herehttp://freeyourandroid.com to get u started..

Seeking advice on building AOSP
Hi,
I want to learn building ROMS. I am aware that it is a difficult job, but I want to give it a try. I have read the AOSP buld instructions, but they don't mention the steps involved in creating a new build target. I understand that the process is maybe different for each device, so could any of the ROM developers here please tell me about the steps involved in doing the same for our Galaxy R?
If the answer is very involved, a short summary and relevant links will help a lot, too.

[Q] DUAL-BOOT kernel for VILLE ???

Hi All,
Its goood to be here !!
I have just ordered a HTC One s (Ville) international/UK black beauty and am already quite excited and overwelmed to see the kind of dev support this device gets, which is one of important deciding factor for me , over One XL. It will be few days before I'd get the device in my hands, but as a sucker for flashing custom roms/kernels that I'm, already read quite a few posts on this forum.
Now, to the important topic. I'm currentyl using Samsung Galaxy S2 and it has quite a few kernel options that have capability of Dual-boot i.e. You can have two different roms at the same time and u get to choose at boot time which one to boot. This is quite handy feature as it allowed me to have a stable rom and an experimental/aosp/cm9 rom as secondary rom which helped me in testing it for devs.(Siyah, Dorimanx etc are few those kernels)
I was wondering if its possible to HTC Ville too ? I don't find any thread discussing about this, so I don't know whether its something not thought about earlier or its something thats impossible for HTC device. I'm new to HTC devices so I can't say much about it. If we could have Dual boot rom then we can have best of both worlds- One stable Sense rom and other AOSP/Cm9/cm10/MIUI rom.
In case its something obivious and I wasted someone's time on this, i'm sorry!!! But definately something to thought about and work on if there's a possibility of that.
Moved To Q&A
Please post all questions in the Q&A section
Anybody ??
I'd also love the ability to duel boot, but I don't know if it will be possible on the One S.

Nice to know , but we don't have an external SD ..
Dual boot kernel not possible
I have done some research on this and talked to some devs active in sgs2 forum. And its a BAD NEWS for us as we cannot have a dual boot kernel without external SD card support.
The main reason is for any dual boot kernel or application, it first need to create a new partition in the storage and swap space. Till now devs have only implemented this capability in external SD.
maybe when we will have S-OFF developers will be able to repartition the sd-card and then make room for more partitions and more space for data

You can switch to any Rom from a custom Rom as long as the firmware base is the same.
Always wipe all data and cache factory reset before flashing a new Rom unless specified in the Rom that there is no wipe needed.
Never restore data with titanium backup when changing Roma it can cause conflicts and crashes.

Custom roms are not for everyone. You can't expect others to read your mind ,or answer every single tiny point. Go and learn. Go and find info. It takes time and effort to pick the skills up. Its not hard but you have to put the effort in if you expect others to spend time helping you !

Roms are like clothes for our phones. You dress according to the enviorment in which you will be around. We canot tell you what combintion is the best. It totaly depends on you. Invest time in finding out what rom offers you what you need. Honestly... in my own personal opinion, there is no rom besides glorious overdose that worth installing. Half of what the other roms offer cause glitches in the rom.. and are themed... something you can do yourself. I appreciate the work done on this phone and to the devs currently deving for this phone, kudos. Let's go byond the "impossible" and make this phone a bit more exciting. Cause deving isn't for fame. At this time last year, I was anxiously awaiting GOV. There were others but I only trusted ayoteddy at the time. After some time, I tried others and always went back to GOV.
I do these roms because after using root uninstaller to customize it my way, I figured that I should learn how to do this myself.
My roms will never be like GOV....it is perfection. I just do this to occupy my time. I am a recovering alcoholic and this has been sort of like a hobby for me.
My list of fave roms include GOV, GenericGinger, ICS Domination, Clean Fusion (Although now it cannot play YouTube within the web browser) and TouchMIUIwiz.
