Thinking wild,
like in linux we can have live cd & boot from a live cd is it possible to make the android rom compatible for booting from internal or external sd card without installation?
This way we can test different roms without messing up the installed rom, the latest such implementation was done in 2009 for canon 5D camera & later for many other cameras having magic lantern firmware to boot from CF/SD card without messing up the firmware.
Any developer willing to look into this?
There are already such a thing called boot manager. It support multi-ROM installing. But only for HTC devices, even not Samsung I9000.

Idea is fantastic. It looks like 'preview of rom' just like 'theme preview' in nokia. But practically its impossible. U can use emulator to run rom on computer.

Oh I didn't know that that boot manager exist can you give me the link for this please.
Are samsung chips locked in some way hence now allowing the booting?

@vishal24387 where can I find such emulator to run rom?
We need first USB OTG.
Like SGS2, but there we have a "hidden" partition, that is the second boot partition!

dude sgsl9003 is talking about dual boot
Ok found the boot manager in the market & the description says
BootManager will not work with Samsung devices that are not listed because of the way Samsung handles the boot partition (probably hidden).

No samsung device is listed only HTC work. Seems samsung purposely locking the devices & crippling the phones even though hardware supports many features?

Yes kind of dual boot like on my windows machine I still can boot into linux from the live cd, it will be ideal if android roms can be made to work like that but I am no developer & don't even know how this can be done hence inviting all genius rom developers to look into this possibility.
Developers will get a lot more feedback from users since then we could test roms (nightly build) as & when required without installation & messing up the stock rom.
Great idea, but very difficult to achieve. But i'm very positive that with the presence of some great devs we have here one day we can achieve such feat.
This is a good way of eliminating having to flash new ROM on our devices.

Great so do you think the same can be done for i9003?
hmm it was diffferent cause rokr e6 was an ezx phone based on linux but it is very different from android which is also based on linux

Can we do this on i9003 as well? We're talking about samsung phones, the method has been ported to a galaxy s2... and dual boot might be useful for debugging alpha mods!
Is it possible? Or i9003 and Samsung Galaxy s2 are completely different phones?
what's the use?? i don't see why apart from novelty that someone would like to do this.

Really? This is important for people who need a working phone but would like to try out (and maybe help) new roms. Here's why.
You have dual boot: you start the phone in the morning with Samsung's stock where everything works just fine. Then when you have time you switch back to a rom, go offline and try whatever you want. When you really need the phone you boot back to stock.
This would be helpful. I was thinking about how to port this, I know about chroot, but we need to start another kernel's image too. Maybe a script run on CWM recovery which changes boot img path and a modified kernel which sees his own as his legitimate partition? If we had grub this would be easy. I know linux tricks but I am not pratical with Android.
Galaxy 3 thread has a kernel called g3mod kernel, it supports multibiot, meaning placing the system.img in the kernel's folder, thus allowing you to multiboot, and keeping your data there.
Edit: if you search ard in the galaxy 3 dev thread, there is also a kernel called dual boot.
Cheers

If you want to help, you're welcome, otherwise, just get away. As you said: this is the developer's section.
I'm afraid chroot is not enough. What needs to be done is to boot a different kernel. Chrooted OSs rely on your own kernel.

Hey , I'm new here so ill say hi too. Anyways , a week ago I got a Desire S for my birthday and before i had an ipod touch. I know that jailbreaking an ios device is easy and if you mess up you simply restore. What about an android device? What are the risks of rootibg and can you restore itback to its original state for warranty purposes? Are the roms there any roms available for daily use? ( 3.2.5, sense 3.5 , ice cream sandwich? ) Thanks in advance
Oh and, if ill decide to root what should I do / save to uunroot?
Android's are usually quite easy to restore. Just download the RUU thingy, available on this forum.
this thread is really good
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601
just give a good read through all the threads in the guide section.
I've found that it's not easy to brick an android device or mess something up. All you need is a backup of your rom (which you'll understand after reading the guides) and you should be safe.
Well all I need to do is save my ROM? How do I do that?
Also what are kernels and radios and hboots? completely newbie to this..

Well I couldn't really find anything about kernels and radios, and to backup my ROM I need a rooted device? What if its too late? How can I know if I have a faulty chip?I don't want to wreck my device...
Well there's not much you can do if your chip is faulty, but you can do things to stop your phone breaking.
Never pull the battery out is a key one. If you have to, try pressing volume up + down and the power button at the same time. There are also other things you should do. Ben Pyett is great with helping about the eMMC problem
The radio and hboot is something you shouldn't worry about. I've never bothered messing around with them and you really don't need to.
Kernels are flashed in the same way as ROMs. Through clockworkmod recovery or 4ext recovery. Whichever you want. All you have to do is choose the right one for the ROM you're flashing ie a sense kernel for a sense rom. In the desire s section you'll find 3 sense kernels and 1 aosp kernel. AOSP are ROMs like cyanogenmod which don't have any GUIs like sense. With two of the kernels ( Hyperion and Endymion) you must choose the right version of sense. Hyperion is for sense 3.0 and Endymion is for sense 3.5 and the unity kernel can be used for any version of sense.
Making a backup is easy. All you have to do is go into recovery and select the backup and restore option and choose backup. You must do this before flashing a custom ROM because if the install fails you'll have something to fall back on.
I've tried my best but if you still have more questions then ask.

Also , my dad really liked the 3.5 update so I tried doing the same on his Desire and well when its reaches "zerging root" it says that it failed with a sad smiley..
Could it be because he has a update available but won't install it? ( As its impossible for him because at the end of the New firmware download it says damaged file or something.. )

Hi
I if you use sense 3.5, swype is already built in. Go to the keyboard settings and turn htc trace on.
Swype away!
However if you want full swype, its a beta, I recommend just signing up on their website to get the apk, its free

Inspire will NOT get an ICS rom officially. You can only run roms after rooting. HTC is not releasing an ics update for our phones, the desirehd will get one but you can only take advantage of that if you are rooted. and as mentioned please do a bit more searching, as all of your questions have been asked many times.
Another thing to keep in mind before flashing/installing an ICS rom, there is not a single ICS rom that is fully functional at the moment. With most of the ICS roms besides small bugs here and there (that is if they still have any) either the camera or videocamara or both do not work and will not work until the dhd gets the update. Most of the roms in the dhd forum will work with the inspire.
As i ha already been mentioned, read and rea some more. You'll find a lot of nice "toys" to play with.

Just like the 2 members said ics has some bugs I used it from some other devs and from having a good cam and video to work was important to me and yes you can use 3 rd party but was not all that good.
Also understand the importance of backups this is some info I posted else where but its nothing special may help or so...
No need to say sorry lol...your ok just hate so the new ones get cyber yelled at by some mod and close your thread and not getting your answer.
But even though it maybe not be for the rom that your running but also check out the Q&As of those Roms.
And also I know the htc inspire thread for ROMs is always on top of the game here but just letting you know as well Desire HD forums is I would say you should go for the most recent ROMs and updates etc.. And yes Desire HD can be used for the Htc Inspire so thats where Im at for the most part..
But if you ever get a boot loop form a rom you flash make sure you fully wipe (sorry just funny every time.you will see what I mean) from rom to rom unless other wise...If you still happen to have the PD98IMG file still on your sd card happens when you 1st root and for get that its there delete I use Es File Explorer to find whats on the sd card there are others astro file manager. Also This happen to me once when I flash scripts, gps fix, kernels then the rom that I was going to use and it just totally F'd my phone or re boots random or just gets stuck on the htc screen..
But I had made this post for another user (new) maybe this may help:
So this is an idea of what I do when I flash a rom and some other ideas/tips.
Getting Started or Flashing A Rom:
Once you root your phone (this is not in any order really) you should get ROM Manager aka Clock Work Mod. Once you get that, open the CWM and the first top half you will see flash clockworkmod recovery make sure your on wifi I would at least for the updates. You will see a dialog box click desire hd. This will allow you to make back ups of your settings that you made when you flash a rom its always a good idea to make your backups its a life save!! So, once you made your back up and this is what I do.. I plug in my phone to the pc switch to disk mode which will let you see whats on your sd card. Since you flash the CWM and recovery you will see on your sd card a folder called clockworkmod open then backups folder you will see you back that you made, drag and drop that backup file that you made to your fold that you made on pc to save it for later. And thats pretty much how I save my backups of roms etc.. Now if you need to load that back up just plug phone in disk mode cwm fold>backup drag and drop back up that you need. And boot into recovery mode and select back up and restore and select restore and the file boot and your good..
I would download which Rom I would like to use. Save it to pc to a folder that I have made that I store all my roms, backups, radios & rils, kernels..etc.. just to keep myself organized. Once you get your rom just drag and drop it to the ROOT of the sd card do NOT add it in any folder thats on the sd card. Once you have it on the card just boot into recovery flash your rom.. Other then that its easy to flash the rom.. And when you get all your settings set up make a back up and when done save it to the pc and delete it from the sd card if you dont want to keep on the card I do that..
When it comes to battery life it depends on what the rom.. But I like to use killers http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ht=killersolth scripts for the kernels.. For me I always flash a different kernel upon flashing a new rom. For me having the kernel and killers script is the best combo for me to have for performance and battery life.. now since I have inspire I use the uv lites scripts.
For the most part flashing radios & Rils you would never really need to do that so I wouldnt recommend it for now maybe later but read about it its good to know what it does..
Other sides which I for got to add.. When you flash a new rom its always good to wipe user data.,cache, delvik it makes it for a good clean install with other roms..
Also the desire HD thread which the inspire can use the roms from that thread to.
Well I hope this helps you in any way.. if you need help PM me best of luck

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks in advance!!
Well once you root your phone its rooted just can't add a stock Rom to it to make it stock. There is thread in the inspire forum called returning to stock or something like that like as in stock out of the box the members name is genepool I think I had to use that to unroot ny friends phone it was very easy ... So keep in mind that you need to unroot to go back to out of the box stock Rom.
As you may know as my other post always make a recovery of what you have on your phone just in case.

your best bet (imo) would be to check out the ace hack root kit...and read that thing repeatedly...that's what I used to root mine...as for roms go...every ics rom as stated before has some sort of bugs or errors...you will just have to try some that you like the best.....keep in mind to ALWAYS backup...backup...and backup again to be sure in case you jack something up...this site has TONS of info if you search for it..lol

There are a few good ics roms, but none will be rock solid until its released officially to the DHD. Then we can have some goodness here on the inspire. The few that are out there are solid enough for now.
Welcome to xda, big rule is to learn to search. That question could have been answered very quickly by searching. I won't give you the names of the Ics roms out currently for that same reason. Search and ye shall find.

My friend so will all the replies and input I would say find what rom you like or seems very popular so if you need anything you know that thread is "alive", root your phone, backup, and flash the rom that you pick out. Once you do that go through all the set up.. and take that backup and save it to your pc(thats what I do) not to throw you off track here but there is kernels that will help out battery life like I stated in one of post. I would also look into kernels, which kernels are very easy to flash and scripts to match with the kernel but I think your ready

Ok, if you want to revert to stock and S-ON use Gene´s Method. Put the file (named PD98IMG.zip) in the root of the sdcard and the boot in hboot.
Never flash a froyo RUU if your phone is running GB. You will mess the bootloader. DON´T USE YOUTUBE TUTORIALS, just do the homework and read.
Have in mind that if you mess your phone no one but you will care. You can also use the last version of the Hack Kit to revert to stock and S-ON....

"I love my Springfield XD40"
This post is for anyone newly rooted and looking to flash a custom rom.
There is a popular AOKP rom out there named Ice Cold Jelly. From what I have heard, it is a well designed, full-featured rom, but you should be aware that it was created for the quad-core Tegra 3 version of the One X. There is no version of ICJ for the dual-core S4 One X/XL. [Edit: There is now--see below]
What's worse, however, is that attempting to flash ICJ on an S4 One X/XL may permanently brick your phone. This is because the two processors use different partition layouts. What happens when you try to flash ICJ?
absolutelygrim said:
The biggest problem with ICJ is it writes a kernel for a completely different processor to p4, 5, 6 and part of p7.
P4 is one of the most crucial partitions for these phones. It overwrites p4 with what is basically crap. Killing the phone.
Click to collapse
P4 is the extended partition table. When you overwrite that, the CPU has no way to find the OS. So it simply stops and goes into what is known as QHUSB_DLOAD mode.
If you are on 1.85 or earlier firmware, there is a fix for this problem though it's a bit tricky [EDIT: Maybe not--we've got at least one report of a 1.85 phone perma-bricked by ICJ]. If you are on 2.20. however, there is currently no known way to unbrick your phone [Edit: Other than paying for a jtag fix], and there may never be one. You will have created the proverbial paperweight. I have seen at least 10 people do this since root for 2.20 came out. Please don't add to the list.
Most people who run into these problems get them because they rush things and don't research enough beforehand. Still, if this post saves even one person from bricking, it will have served its purpose.
If you're coming to this post too late, here's the WIP thread for the potential fix.
[Update 12/7/12] The dev for ICJ has added asserts to the rom, meaning it will fail to flash on the S4 One X and nothing will happen (unless you've wiped /system first, in which case the asserts won't do anything). However, as there are plenty of older versions floating around on unofficial sites, it should still be avoided like the plague!
[Update 02/11/13] We've now got a dual core version here. So there's now really no excuse if you bricked.

This post is for anyone newly rooted and looking to flash a custom rom.
There is apparently a popular AOKP rom out there named Ice Cold Jelly. From what I have heard, it is a well designed, full-featured rom, but you should be aware that it was created for the quad-core Tegra 3 version of the One X. There is no version of ICJ for the dual-core S4 One X/XL.
What's worse, however, is that attempting to flash ICJ on an S4 One X/XL will brick your phone. This is because the two processors use different partition layouts. What happens when you try to flash ICJ?
If you are on 1.85 or earlier firmware, there is a fix for this problem though it's a bit tricky. If you are on 2.20. however, there is currently no known way to unbrick your phone, and there may never be one. You will have created the proverbial paperweight. I have seen at least 10 people do this since root for 2.20 came out. Please don't add to the list.

Hopefully this gets read..
And this should actually be stickied.. I don't care if they don't read them.. It really needs to be at the top of the forums.. Even better, can Peart make this an announcement to appear at the top of EVERY forum for our device?
We'll keep bumping the hell out of this, and it would be nice if the international guys had one in big bold letters saying LTE ONEX OWNERS GET OUT OF HERE!!! haha

We've already got an excellent resource list stickied in the Development forum. Again, the problem is that people who need to know about it don't bother looking for it.

that thread doesn't need random posts
i've been submitting alot of links to the resource page lately. might get a few more added. i want to make a nice op layout for it, with maybe drop down menus so people can see where they want to go before being overwelmed by so many links.

I see where you're coming from but, at the same time people are looking around for what to do. I figure that if a link to that page is the second post, or even in the OP, it would help a lot of people out from going to the international forum. Like we see quite a bit actually.
I found the index page and was immediately bombarded by links, If that had a drop down menu and what not to make it more organized....:victory:

That's what i said in my last post.
Can you please add to the OP something along the lines of
1.85 USERS, YOU MAY BE IN THE SAME BOAT AS 2.20 USERS IF YOU FLASHED ICJ
I just worked with someone who said he was on the 1.85 firmware and flashed ICJ.. No dice, device looks deader than a door nail, besides the fact that I see it going in and out of QDL mode..
No partitions show up, no writable state, nada.

That was mine haha DONT FLASH ICJ WHATEVER YOU DO!
I wonder if adding the processor for each phone to the forum titles would prevent people from flashing the wrong stuff.

There are warnings all over both forums. The problem is people don't read before they do this, and many of them pick up these roms from random websites and never even come here until they're bricked.

That explains things then.
If people want this ROM so damn bad why don't we just port it over?? Is that doable?

nope
Even if a port were do-able, people would still screw it up. It's human nature!

We had a port of a Tegra 3 Rom in this section for a little bit when Sense 4.1 came out. Worked perfectly fine and had no problems with installation.

You can port it. But just changing the updater script would still cause a brick

Honestly just let them brick, they should be more careful.
I own a One SV. I'm on Jelly Bean. I successfully rooted it via the newest superuser apk and twrp. But when I try to remove ANY file under /system (including apps) using Titanium Backup it require reboot device, after a reboot or battery run out it is mystically restored and apps installed removed either. But if I restart without mentions above it ok!!! Where the hell do the files come from? I've searched the entire phone memory but couldn't find anything. Have I missed something?
Search this forum for my posts and keywords system write protection
I have answerd this question 20 times and more.

The reason the apps are returning when you've rebooted your phone is because your not s-off I would recommend using rumrunner.....

If you flash a boot.img which has a modified kernel for write protection being removed then that too will also resolve the issue and thus S-Off wouldn't be necessary, but of course, going S-Off only makes it better and more convenient.

Hard to say. Back when this device was a bit more active I would tell you, yes, but as of now that is a different story. Links could be bad but if you check old.splatterhands thread where everything needed to know about this forum is compiled then you may find that answer you are looking for.
With that said, it also depends on which K2 device you have. It's important that the correct kernel be used since they have their differences internally.
However, it is very easy to take the kernel source, remove write protection from it's source, then compile the kernel into a binary and apply it to your device. This is usually the approach I take for my own personal development and gain.
https://github.com/ModdingMyMind/an...mmit/c34ea02e20b758e78cae9f8b8bc975d268accd84
If you take a look at that link I just shared you will see the changes I made to the kernel source regarding the K2_CL (Boost Mobile) variant. Everything in green is what was added so the kernel would have Selinux support and everything in red is what I deleted to remove write protection from the kernel.
https://github.com/ModdingMyMind/an...mmit/86a317157a741ef12042426696e3c84eeed3e263
This next commit shows the changes I made to the kernel source for disabling Module Support so that when I make a new build with a new version number the kernel binary will work with the devices old modules thus saving me the hassle of building new modules and replacing the old with the new. More of a convenience in my opinion. Not many people disable module support for some reason which is why you will hear a lot about people flashing a new boot.img/kernel binary and then their WiFi breaking. It's usually the result of the kernel version not matching the old modules which prevents them from working properly or at all.
That is very informative , thank you for your time and knowledge.....

No problem. I still own the K2_CL. Wanting to get a new phone but until Boost offers something worth my interest I will continue to use this device as my primary. The phone has been out a long time now and is falling behind in the Android World but nevertheless, it is still a great phone and I use it for most of my Android Development projects since I don't always have time to sit in front of a computer.
I have the European version and yeah they are good phones they don't sell them anymore here in the UK , I'm trying to get into android development myself but I think its a bit too hard , I read once on the internet that the best way to learn to code is to first find a fault or something you'd like to change in an app and look at the code so I'm going to keep researching and obviously looking at posts from professionals such as yourself ......
