Can someone please accelerate my decision making by letting me know if the RAZR HD/MAXX HD can:
1) Be fully unlocked from the carrier (Verizon) for use on any compatible network
2) Can use a SIM card when traveling abroad (to purchase local SIMs)
3) Can be fully rooted
Wikipedia lists the phone as:
CDMA EV-DO rev A; 800, 1900MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
UMTS 850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz
LTE 700 MHz Class 13
HSDPA+ (4G) 21.1 Mbit/s
HSUPA 5.76 Mbit/s
I also see information that it uses a SIM...but I am not sure if there are different versions of the phone for different carriers/countries, or if my Verizon phone will be able to do all this.
Please advise...thanks!

Well, will let you know..
1. Verizon will not carrier unlock the phone for use here in the states,
2. I have seen people use it abroad but you have to set that up with Verizon.
3. It can be fully rooted and unlocked bootloader.
Some of 1 and 2 may be accomplished in other ways but not officially by verizon, at least not without paying

Thanks...I'm looking for end result here... Can I get Verizon, or a 3rd party to unlock this phone for use with foreign SIM cards?
Can I do it myself (relatively painlessly) with available toolsets?
You can simply buy NOT a Droid Razr HD, but a Razr HD.
This one have no Verizon Branding, also have 4G, the model number is XT925.
This version shipping directly from motorola.
And you can root, unlock bootloader for 5 minutes with win/mac.
One more But - you have to check the frequency of Lte in XT925 version.

Thanks...I'm hoping to be able to buy from a US carrier so I can get the lower rates. Does anyone know which phones on which carriers will allow me to unlock (with a little hacking or a small amount of money for a code) so that I can use them with a foreign SIM?

Bro, as I know you're able to use any version of the razr HD with a foreign sim(in case if it is NOT fully locked) ! You can buy it directly from Verizon. But in USA you will have to use only Verizon. SIM Lock on this device - is only lock on use the phone in US with another carrier (possible to use in US only with Verizon Wireless). Abroad US you can use any SIM, any carrier in any country. Im considering xt926

Thanks ANit - this seems to be exactly what I am now seeing based on my research and talks with VZW.
It does appear though that this procedure:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2166542
will unlock the device even within the US!
Seriously dude - it's an amazing phone.
It's rock solid by itself, battery life is stellar and camera is good, nowhere near as bad as some would suggest at least.
And as a side note since I cant comment in there yet, I've just installed the AOKP Lunchlies and its perhaps the most stable great custom ROM I've seen in my three or so years on the scene (mainly experienced with the Galaxy Ace, Xperia and now Razr HD). Amazing work guys.
So I have been doing more research and am still concerned about one thing:
While is seems pretty certain that we are saying the phone is unlocked for the GSM bands outside the country...and LTE really is irrelevant because no one else uses the same band...what about CDMA countries like Japan or Israel?
Is the only solution when using this phone in another CDMA country to use Verizon's roaming?

The only recent VZW phone to work on other US carriers is the Bionic. Before that I can only recall the HTC Titan as doing that but maybe the Incredible 2 as well. However, VZW call quality and pricing has become so competitive that being locked to VZW in the US is not a bad thing. As you seem to have figured out, the RHD is sim unlocked for foreign countries so you can use foreign micro sims easily. You would likely not be able to activate the phone on another CDMA carrier but you should be able roam there with VZW service. I have only roamed in Mexico on CDMA. All the other roaming in Indonesia, Taiwan, EU and caribbean I have done was on GSM. The RHD does very well roaming. I have chosen to use VZW services (Vodafone) so I can keep my number. I just buy a 100MB data package for $25 which is plenty for email. Not doing that will cost $20/MB and can run into the thousands of dollars. Call costs aren't significantly different to warrant a sim swap on short trips but I have used international foreign sims and programmed apns.
BTW Qualcomm will be releasing a universal LTE chip that will work on all LTE bands in the world.

Hey guys just wondering if anybody has unlocked a One S (bought from a Canadian Carrier) and tested it out on Wind or Mobilicity.
I emailed HTC asking them about the bands supported by the phones and this is the reply I got.
Fido: HSPA 42 Mbps
Bell: HSPA 42 Mbps 2100/1900/AWS GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Sasktel: HSPA 42 Mbps
Telus: HSPA 42 Mbps
Virgin: HSPA 42 Mbps

Asked them if the other phones had the same bands
I do apologise for the misunderstanding, but the bands would be the same for the One S on each network.
That being said, I will suggest to contact Wind Mobile to verify if a unlocked phone will work to its fullest potential or not. The reason I mention this, is that some providers put a limit on the connection, on an unlocked phone.

Wrong. Canadian One S are not AWS.

Are you sure Penta Band ONE S exist in Canada/USA ? read post #3
As for the official HTC site says. HSPA/WCDMA:Europe/Asia: 850/900/2100 MHz
BUT Your links would make sense according to the note Network bands in regions other than Europe and Asia Pacific may be different, depending on the mobile operator and your location.
I too, am trying to find out too what bands does the Canadian version support
Fido , Bell, Virgin all listed HSPA 850 1900 2100 but Telus only listed 850 1900 , so that leads me to believe 1700 is not supported.
However at the same time, the international version isn't penta band, nor the T mobile version... Where are theretailers getting their penta band One S in black?
Maybe the device is penta band from the fatory but carriered modified ?
My Telus One S arrives next week and I will unlock it but ufortunately Wind doesn't
operate in SK so I won't be able to test it.
I tried to look at the demo phone and I couldnt find the menu option to select networks.

The black unlocked international One S is for sure not pentaband as far as I know and supports less bands than the blue version. I am assuming the blue versions are all the same and just branded differently. My suspicion is Fido/Bell/Virgin/Telus aren't listing the 1700 band so that people do not buy and unlock them to use with Wind/Mobilicity.
That's too bad there has to be someone out there that has attempted to try it on Wind/Mobilicity. It's such a pain how every site/company is showing different specs.
The European version will not work with AWS. Currently the only *confirmed" AWS version is the T-Mobile US version. However if S-Off is ever achieved then flashing a T-Mobile US radio could "unlock" the bands in the European version and other versions a la the Snapdragon Galaxy Note.

I am aware the the European one does not have AWS. However I am not asking about the black European model. In Canada we have the blue model just like the one with T-Mobile in the States which leads me to believe that the Canadian version=the American version; I just need some confirmation.

Does anybody mind looking under the cover for the model / FCC ID / Industry Canada certification numbers and reporting back with the carrier they got the phone from and the FCC ID. They should be printed on the label near the headphones / headset jack.
These are the variants available in Canada.
PJ40100: UMTS Band V (850)
PJ40110: UMTS Band II (1900)/IV (AWS)/V (850)
PJ40200: UMTS Band V (850)
PJ40210: UMTS Band II (1900)/V (850)
I went to Telus and Bell today ( the Fido and Sasktel stores didn't have working demo models ), I checked the FCC tags and both of them showed "PJ40110". on the top line.
I didn't look at the FCC ID or IC.

Awesome! Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. Now I can safely go out and buy this with no worries
Please be aware that you will buy an unsupported phone, unlock the bootloader to root the phone, most probably voiding your warranty in the process (there's talk that the root-only (and not requiring unlocked bootloader) method for the NA One X works on the One S) then Sim-unlock the phone (by a paid code or the new hack), find the APNs for your carrier...
... And hope that all works...
I don't want to scare you but make sure you fully understand all risks. Specially if you buy the phone outright and don't have an account on that carrier...
Despite the fact that I can't test data (as it should be locked in my account) here is a shot telling that I'm on 3G UTMS (which can't be done with this SIM on a non-AWS phone like my iPhone).
I got one from Virginmobile had it unlocked it and am now using it on Mobilicity.
The Rep at the store assured me it wont work but i tried it and it did.
Reason for buying from there was because it was on sale.
I'm looking to get an unlocked HTC One X (AT&T) to use overseas where the 3G band is 2100. I read in the Engadget review that AWS is disabled out of the box?
What is AWS exactly? And does it affect the 2100 3G band that I need?
EDIT: So my exact question is, can I use an unlocked ATT HOX to get at least a 3G data connection where the band required is ONLY 2100 (read: NOT 1700/2100 like T-Mobile)? Like the UK and Taiwan as in this chart.
It'd be kinda ironic if it didn't work in Taiwan lol
AWS is a band of 3/4g used by T-Mobile, and other carriers. at&t does not use this band, nor does rogers. But most foreign carriers do.
From my understanding once we have s-off you can change this to use that band.

Thanks for the info. Do you know which bands specifically are AWS? And does this mean unlocking the phone doesn't give me access to them? You wouldn't per chance know the thread that talks about the unlock for AWS would you? I can't seem to find it...
So it seems that AWS is synonymous with W-CDMA 1700 (UMTS Band IV)? And/or from 1710 to 1755 MHz for uplink, and from 2110 to 2155 MHz for downlink?
I got that from Wikipedia. So it would appear that if I need the 2100 band internationally, I'd be okay using an unlocked AT&T HTC One X. Can anybody verify this?
Sorry, I'm not too knowledgeable about what AWS is exactly... Except that T-Mobile USA uses the 1700 band and that's part of it which is why the ATT HOX doesn't get T-Mobile USA 3G.
You will get signal internationally, but it may not be 3g is all. But the 2100 band is at&t capable.

Yeah, I'm not doubting the ability to get signal for talk/text, I want to try to get at least 3G. What's a smartphone without mobile data, right?
In any case, I just tried looking it up and it seems that AT&T uses 850 and 1900?
So it would appear that AWS generally refers to the pairing of 1700/2100. Does that mean AWS is ONLY the band pair and does NOT refer to using only 2100?
Even in UMTS 2100, upload will be in 19xx range. I'm sure HOX will work in 2100 UMTS band.

Correct, AWS just refers to the split band (1700/2100) only, where one band is used for download, the other for upload (can never remember which is which). AWS is also known as Band IV. Its not to be confused with the 2100 MHz band (Band I) used in Europe and many other parts of the world for 3G.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands#UMTS-FDD
The phone should work fine while traveling, including 3G. But I will try to confirm next week, as I am traveling to Europe. This will be my first trip abroad with the One X. I'll be roaming on AT&T; instead of SIM unlocked and running a local SIM. But roaming on AT&T works pretty similar, using the local carriers (the only real difference is in the billing). So I can at least confirm that part works.
IN the past I've traveled internationally with several AT&T phones with the 2100 MHz band, so I don't expect any problems.

The part about most foreign carriers using AWS is false, as I noted above. AWS is pretty much an anomaly, only used by T-Mobile, and carriers in Canada and Venezuela. You are confusing Band I with Band IV.
Just want to make sure that this is clear, for anyone else reading this thread, to avoid misunderstanding.
Also, the part about enabling AWS once we have S-Off is just speculation. I would not take if for granted. Mostly just wishful thinking by those on T-Mobile. I would not take it as fact.
Thanks for the answers! Do let me know how 3G works on your trip though
I messaged HTC and this is an excerpt from the reply they sent me:
To put it very simply, the AT&T One X uses a cellular radio that does not have or use the 2100 frequency. With this being the case, the situation is actually a hardware limitation, not a lack of software or a software disablement of a hardware functionality. This, of course, means that you wouldn't get 3G in Taiwan with an unlocked AT&T One X. You can still get 2G/EDGE with the proper data network settings though. I can definitely appreciate the irony of the situation though, our phones are manufactured in Taiwan after all!
That being said, I messaged them back and asked why 2100 was listed as supported on their official site.
Reply:
Considering that AWS is listed as an LTE technology in those specifications when it's not an LTE tech tells me that the specifications are listed incorrectly. I've gone ahead and forwarded this for review and correction though. Even if the specifications are correct, because the device is configured for AT&T's 3G network, which uses the 850 and 1900 frequencies, it's still very likely that you still would not get 3G service.
So, the rep doesn't know is all I'm getting from this email. "Very likely" doesn't sound definitive to me.
I can confirm that at&t hox is working fine in umts aka 3g mode in 2100Mhz. Just today i received one, sim unlocked it and tested

Sorry for the late update. But I can verify that 3G on the AT&T version of the One X works just fine in Germany, which uses 2100 MHz for 3G.
I didn't use data a whole lot, but a little browsing, Google Maps, etc., all of which seemed speedy. I also ran Speedtest while in Germany, and got 5.5 Mbps down, 1.3 Mbps up, which I think is safe to say 3G and not EDGE. Also had the "4G" icon in the notification bar, since our phone displays that for HSPA.

I am in China, and it's the same 2100 MHz for 3G, I can sometimes connect to the HSPA but it's not stable and keep have notification 'Restricted Access Changed. Data Service is blocked'. Although I can use internet browser and some apps like Google Map. But some apps keep prompted ' network unavailable' like Weibo, I found the problematic apps are clients of news website. I wonder if they use some protocol which is not support or blocked?
Great

I was wondering if the Droid Razr Maxx HD for Verizon will work in Canada or do we have to wait for them to release a GSM/International model?
Pretty sure it won't on the HSPA/LTE networks. Only AT&T phones have the bands to support the Bell/Telus/Rogers HSPA/LTE networks.
I just need to figure out where I can buy a canadian one from now to use on AT&T...
EDIT:

With VZWs newest spectrum deals, I thought they had to leave their LTE phones unlocked now? Even so, if it was unlocked with its global GSM capabilities turned on, I think it would only get HSPA+/UTMS/EDGE on AT&T...

You could find a Canadian to pick up one for you and have it shipped over. It would put you back about $700 for a brand new one shipped to you ($600 + $72(tax in BC) + $25 (shipping) + $7(unlock)).
I'm not sure of VZW's LTE phone unlock status, but I think you'd only be able to get GSM network (EDGE) on this phone on AT&T.

The Razr HD is quad band for 3G (HSDPA), which means it supports pretty much every network. Only LTE won't work.

My mistake! You are absolutely correct. I should read a bit more before I respond!
Here are the supported bands:
Droid Razr HD
CDMA 800 1900, LTE B13, WCDMA 850 900 1900 2100, GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 EVDO Rev. A, HSDPA 21.1 Mbps (Cat 14), HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
Rogers Razr HD LTE
LTE B4 B17, WCDMA 850 900 1900 2100, GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900, HSDPA 21.1 Mbps (Cat 14), HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
does this phone could get unlocked to work in mexico? right now mexico dont support LTE/4g but at the same time Telcel, Movistar and Iusacell got the Galaxy S3, and this one supports 4g/lte, but i dont know if i can get one hd from verizon to get it work here on mexico, as far as i know, mexico works with gsm phones right? and this one is cdma
Pretty expensive! I think I might just wait to see if someone with a VZW one can prove if it works on a GSM carrier... Or wait for the next nexus...
Where are you guys purchasing your MAXX HD in Canada? The usual online suspects don't have it yet.
So would the Razr Maxx HD (verizon model) work in Canada (telus) on 4G or would it only be 3G/Edge service?

Based on the charts:
LTE = No
HSPA = Yes
GSM = Yes
The 4G moniker is misleading. It should be used for LTE, but the providers in Canada have called their 3G+ networks (HSPA) 4G and confusing all their customers.

My bad. I was talking about the Razr HD LTE, not the MAXX HD. I don't know of anyone in Canada selling the MAXX HD.

Based on your reply, you are telling us that this devices should work out of the box, with no additional software modification on international carriers, right?
One thing that wasn't clear to me is, does the Verizon devices (or at least any Razr HD) are sold with unlocked GSM radios?
@OP wait a month.I expect either Telus of Bell to pick up the MAXX version for the holidays. I couldn't wait nor wanted the MAXX, but my bet is on Bell picking up the MAXX.

No, that's not exactly what I said.
Sorry to be pedantic, but what I said was the Verizon Razr HD has the radios required to be compatible with the Bell\Rogers\Telus HSPA & the Rogers GSM network in Canada. I am not saying that this device would work out of the box without any modification as I do not know whether the Verizon Razr HD (or Razr HD MAXX) is unlocked for these carriers. If it is unlocked, it should work without any other modifications. However, if not, I assume you can get an unlock code to allow other networks to be used.

Thanks for your answer, now it would be good if someone could confirm the lock status of the GSM radio of these devices.
Motorola razr droid maxx hd
I want to buy a phone and use Verizone in another country is not USA, how to get the unlock code and when it might occur? It makes sense to buy the phone and wait? The phone will work with GSM without code unlock????

For what its worth, I emailed Verizon and the dude that replied told me that it was GSM unlocked for carriers outside USA.
"Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Droid Razr Maxx HD. My name is Michael, and I am happy to confirm that this device is unlocked as well. You would simply need to power off the device, insert the sim card that you would use overseas, and then power it back on to use it."

Verizon informed me that their 'world phones' (e.g. their razr series) are sim-unlocked for international use from the manufacturer.
However some people have reported that for AT&T and TMobile (national GSM carrier) that they have blocked their SIM usage.
Therefore I would assume that all bands would be available to use if you had any international SIM in there, Canada and Mexico etc, the only compatibility would be the LTE bands - if another country used the same LTE bands as the USA Razr, then I would think you would be able to utilise the 4g.

LOL I'm an idiot, was thinking HTC ONE when I said one hd...
Found a really good deal ($170) on a bnib razr hd from verizon with a bad esn on ebay. Didnt really have the time to fully research it before the auction ended so I just took the chance and placed the order.
Did some searching after the fact and have found some really conflicting information. I know the phone would be pretty much useless in the states, but I'm unsure of its usability in Canada? I've herd they would work fine in asia and india so I'm basically curious if anyone knows the extent of how far verizon shares its blocked phone information? Does it extend to Canada?
I've herd on the states you need to have your phone activated onto a network? In Canada we just throw in our sim card and are good to go. Is this a different technology (CDMA vs GSM?). If so assuming the Activation portion of the phone is blocked could the sim card part of it still be open theoretically?
Assuming its possible to work with the bad esn does anyone know if I could use LTE on Bell/virgin?
According to bell it uses LTE AWS 1700mhz and LTE 700mhz and HSPA 850mhz and 1900mhz
According to gsm arena the xt926 uses:
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
4G Network LTE 700 MHz Class 13
Should be fully compatible no? I cant find any information on what class bell uses for their LTE, nor do I know if the class affects anything?

You can unlock it for gsm carriers in the us and its already unlocked for international use. I know with att u get h+ witch is good enough for me on straight talk. I average about 6mps.
Got the phone on the weekend. It works fine on bell/ virgin except I can't connect to lte. Does anyone know of it's possible to unlock lte? According to gsm area the phone should be compatible with lte 700mhz which is what bell uses... Will that radio com thing you guys use to unlock it for us carriers help?
I was thinking of pulling the trigger on pre-order for a few reasons, but have not been able to get an answer of two questions!?
1 ) It says that the Verizon is coming soon, and list Band on the specs, if I pre-order will Verizon compatibility be a software upgrade or will it be a different model phone?
2 ) They talk about a developer edition with unlocked bootloader, is the the unlocked carrier version the same as the developer edition, or is that going to be a different phone all together?
Unfortunately I missed the press conference today and hoping and maybe the questions were answered. Also I figured the great knowledgeable people over here at XDA might know this answer. I have tried contacting HTC support, but it seems their chat system is down. I sent them a Facebook post with these questions, but and not optimistic that they will get back to me.
Anyways thanks,
Leroy
1. Verizon is a software update. It will run on their LTE network. In theory at least. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2493426,00.asp
2. I missed if there would be a developer edition. The presentation said the unlocked carrier version can have bootloader unlocked and not void the warranty. https://youtu.be/VZM17XI409M?t=888
[edit]
HTC's website says the Verizon update will be released in November. I thought I read somewhere that it should be within a week of launch, but I can't remember where I saw it.
[/edit]
Is it possible to use an Indian credit card to place an order and ship to USA address? Do they still do the verification and bill only US cards?

Appreciate all the info @pkinetics
My only concern is what the was said in the article. The phone will not have CDMA, so those spots in a building have happened to me oh so much, where I loose LTE and go to 3g. I can assume with this phone that would mean I would have no service. I really applaud HTC for making a move so bold. There are so many unlocked phones world wide for GSM that are really affordable. I just purchased a used phone to hold me out until I decided if I wanted a Nexus 5x or not, but I think that I am gonna go with this phone. I know that I may loose service sometimes, but usually when I am in a building I am on wifi and I use hangouts for all of my calls and sms.
Thanks again for the links

I don't think they're releasing a DevEd. The unlocked version is sim unlocked only I believe.
Nope, in the live stream they said the phone will not lose its warranty with opened bootloader and unlocked condition. And you can install custom roms without losing it too.

Does anyone know if you can use the unlocked / free US version in Europe / Germany completely without any restriction?
Especially with all frequencies and bands?
Does anyone happen to know if the Sprint version has a CDMA radio? (Just wondering if it might be possible to migrate the sprint version over to verizon land.) LTE-only on Verizon will be a bit of an issue for voice calls in spotty / fringe areas...

If things go as planned, CDMA on Verizon will be no longer...by end of 2016.
They intend to have their entire CDMA market covered with LTE by that time and will be phasing out legacy CDMA altogether.
VoLTE will BE their voice coverage.
Just throwing that out there...

I've seen blurbs about:
1. Shipping early November. I swear I heard in the presentation he said first week of November. I'm guessing this is basic colors.
2. Acid gold and deep garnet will ship late November.
3. Sprint has said they will have the A9 available Nov 6. AT&T has committed, but not set a date or price.
The USA need to start next week Monday in my opinion.

Well, HTC updated A9 Verizon info on their site.
Instead of "Verizon coming soon"
Now it says: "Verizon coming in December"
:silly:
Aloha Santod,
I couldn't help myself and ended up pulling the trigger on the unlocked version. I'm hoping that if what they say is true that this will run on Verizon. If the boot loader is accessible for unlocking and it works on Verizon I will be one step closer to your custom roms.I decided to sell my M9 because I was dissapointed with the camera and I'm currently using my m8 to pass the time. Hope you decide to do your magic on this unit.
Mahalo Bro.
so its a preorder now, when will this ship for gsm models? i may return my m9 and buy this instead.
I think the a9 is a beautiful device for its price
The Sprint version has all the bands necessary for project Fi. Wonder if that's in the cards as well.
