I got my new passport book in the mail today, as I'm going to need it to go on a cruise. Anyways, apparently the back flap of the book contains a NFC Chip. I was holding my book open and i got a text so I put phone on the back flap to reply and the NFC chirp went off. The book it self tells you that it contains electronics. Kind of neat IMO.
Anyway to see what information is being given off by the chip?
After reading your post I grabbed my wife's passport and scanned it with NFC Taginfo. Sorry I can't post link yet, should be an easy search. Make sure to set up the passport key, putting in your passport number, birthdate and expiration date. the result is pretty cool!

Installed it, but doesnt give me anything, just the sounds that it recognizes the NFC tag,
I just tried again and it didn't want to work until I opened the book and set my phone on the back cover from the inside. even from my home screen the app popped open and gave the info.

There are apps specifically made to read the NFC chips in the passports

Royal Caribbean Cruise. I hope I don't get stranded.
most airports and transportation authorities never use the nfc data; which IMO is a huge security issue. however, if one applied about 90c of heat and some very strong magnetic fields shortly thereafter, the nfc data on the passport would be rendered unreadable and effectively neutralized.

You have to do as he said; there's a place in the app to put in the secure information that is required to decrypt the information on the tag. It holds biometric data, picture, etc.
The GS4 uses a new NFC chip that can't fully read US passports. The Galaxy Nexus and other did
You'll hear the sound and get some info, but NXP TagInfo wont be able to read information or give you the passport picture (even if you enter the DOB and the other info to decrypt).

I think starting 2007ish they offered them as an option for faster customs. I don't know when it became all.

I also believe you have to have the passport open. As a defense against people trying to grab information maliciously they added a metallic layer in the back and front of the passport that blocks attempts to read the chip. Opening the passport allows you to read it since you no longer have that layer in the way. Essentially the passport has it's own mini Faraday cage if you want to think of it that way.

The four passports from friends I was able to test it with a few days ago would suggest otherwise, as would the others who have been successful in this thread. It does seem to be a bit slower than my Galaxy Note was at reading them however.

There's writing on a sticker on the side which is either bt or wifi antenna, nothing on or near the sadness board (calling it that from now on)
The chip info will be hiding under the shields, if somebody with enough knowledge can tell me how much of this is actual shielding and how much is crap I have a rework station and can make quick work of that crap. Keep in mind this is my daily driver.
any Idea, where the "embedded" SIM Card should be?
Naked?
I can't fap to this.
Its all sealed because of the nano-polymer coating. Makes it harder for water to get in. Makes it impossibe to tear down, but it also makes it a beast of a phone.

How do you remove the back cover???
My apologies. I am attempting to remove the back cover. Are there screws hidden that I need to remove? I tried prying, but it seems like I am making no progress and don't want to break anything. Thanks.
Actually, do you see any label for the MEID in the radio? I have a "test" radio that had the MEID blanked because it was for a test account. I need to have a valid MEID entered in order to activate the phone. Any ideas on how to approach this?

Yeah, so much for that- but as someone else had posted, perhaps there's a way to get to the NVItems somehow.
Thing is, from my (admittedly-limited) understanding of SIM cards, we'd need a way to read out every part of an existing SIM, then be able to write it back in (EPST?).

correct you would need to somehow read and program each time. and since att uses the same sim for gsm and lte its entirely possible that the lte programming info would be wiped out if you could do anything like you were thinking

Well, we'd obviously have to save off the original NVItems first, for when we get back from wherever GSM country we're visiting
If (big if) we could actually read and write all this stuff successfully, then the next big hurdle would be being able to read all of the SIM we'd buy from wherever (my goal is to be able to use this phone when I travel outside the US; I have GSM Android handsets sitting around at home, but it'd be great to have one device that can do it all). Apparently the GSM "encryption key seed" (there's a real name for that ...) is stored in the SIM and only known to the SIM and the authentication DB at the carrier so we couldn't just plug in the IMEI/IMSI.

I am just curious if there will be enough space for a sim card reader.
Maybe you could use a nano-simcard reader or some kind of modification of reader.
I mean it could be possible to use just contacts from reader or something like this.
In any case I suppose this is only phone from spirit with different sim card and in Czech republic.
I am looking forward to have it back in my hands

This is not only an incredible product, but if you could couple this with NFC tags, your S4 could become almost completely automated. Interesting, I like the idea of LOCKS, but for the kitchen or somewhere that you don't necessarily need to lock it down, I like my PuGoo just fine! NFC works great behind the PuGoo, but obviously, not the damn TecTiles that I've wasted money on when I had my SIII....

I've never seen a the PuGoo before. Unfortunately, PuGoo is pretty useless if you are going to be riding a motorcycle or bicycle. Quad lock also has a tripod adapter. I like the low profile, high security of the locks. I have contacted Quad Lock development to see about the design supporting NFC stickers.

Hahahaha I am planning on using the quad lock bike mount with NFC to activate bluetooth, car mode, navigation, and sync with my helmet speakers when I go ride my motorcycle! Since I can control the S4 with gloves on and gestures, it is kind of the perfect system for a bike.
So today I went ahead an opened a Bank of America account so I could try Samsung pay.
Initial setup: Initial setup is a pain, you have to call BoA after you open the account and answer 4 obscure questions from your "credit check".
Usage: I've used the card 3 times now. I've discovered you want to scan your finger print after the machine is waiting for the card. If you scan your fingerprint before the swipe card, you can actually crash the POS machine. So today I crashed a local gasstation POS.
If anyone has any questions, shoot away.

Has anyone else experienced this or can emulate the results?
I have not experienced this. I got my account working yesterday but have had mixed results. It worked using NFC at McDonald's, but I haven't been able to get the MST to work, it failed at Starbucks and a local frozen yogurt place.
I feel like such an idiot when it doesn't work, with the cashier looking at me like "why are you putting your phone next to where I swipe a card?"
I've had mixed results so far. When it works, it works great! I have found that while it may work at some places, there are some lime 7-11 that it doesn't. I get declined at 7-11

I've been using samsung pay at different locations using the MST technology and it all work's just fine. When I say MST I mean places that's don't even have NFC terminals. So far loving Samsung Pay
I use it with the nfc off. Only mst everywhere. I find its has worked everywhere but one of the two 711s I've been to, and the Starbucks I frequent.
It seems when ever I use it where there is no nfc, the cashier is always sooo curious. Prolly deal with apple pay users everyday throwing a fit they don't have the technology yet.
I agree. Sooooo embarrassing when it doesn't work. I also try not to use it where the scanner is on the POS systems behind the counter(like starbucks).

Picked up a T-mo note 5 on CL. Looked great; all features I could think to test were good. IMEI# check out as good mostly., I just didn't think to test the spen detection in the holder. It's broke. Dumbass must have inserted the pen backwards and yanked it out
Anyways I picked up all the tools I need to safely open the note 5 and see what I can do with the broken sensor; figured I'd keep this thread updated with my progress on fixing.

You think a t-mobile store will fix a Note 5 I got on Craigslist?

The phone just came out and no matter where you got it there is still a factory warranty of a year

Alright, I'll go to a store and see if they can fix first. Thanks.
Should I return to stock first? I'm on a custom rom.

I would. One less thing for them to deny you saying that you messed with your phone.

I wouldn't try a store, I would wait a week until tmo updates their system and sees that's the phone you hit and then call 611 and tell them the problem with NO mention of where you got the phone unless they ask and even then you can just say it was a present or something.
They don't like it when you don't buy phone off them and use Craigslist instead.
Like ThC23 recommended, I called 611 and they asked me when I bought the device, and I just said "IDK it was a gift." they asked me when the problem started and I said "IDK, it just never worked"
Tmo connected me to Samsung and they gave me an RMA number. I'm sending them my note 5.
Thanks for all your help guys. It's kinda a pitty though, I was looking fwd to taking it apart a bit lol.
Glad I didn't put my Note 4 on sale just yet. Looks like I'll be using it again for a few days.
So samsung didn't do anything to fix it, and they are just mailing it back to me. Looks like the A-hole who sold it to me lied (surprise surprise) the IMEI number has been changed, so samsung won't replace it.
So I'll be going back with my original plan of trying to fix it myself. I wish I could find that broken plastic lever that must have broken, online. but who knows. Maybe it's not working for another reason. There is at least one video where the guy takes Note 5 apart and shows us where it broke, but it just happens to work when he puts it back together, even though he didn't rly do anything to it besides remove the broken of bit off plastic that was preventing the sensor from moving.
As sad as this is, it just reminds us that buying off CL is not always a good idea. I feel for you. ?

It's crazy what people will do to get over on someone.

My friend bought an S6 for $500 on CL. Seller reported it as stolen, IMEI was blacklisted. She had to pay $70 for a new IMEI.

I used to sell on Craigslist, but I wouldn't do anything unless it was in place that had a police substation.

Yea you can't take that to a T-mobile store ...you may have to contact Samsung. ..they won't entertain a phone not purchased at a store or online through T-mobile

Any progress buddy ?
yeah it's still taken apart cause my soldering iron is not meant for these tiny tiny components, but I have not given up. I actually got the spen detection working for a few minutes and it quit working, so I'm on the right track I just need to get better at the soldering. maybe I should stop by radio shack.
as for that plug I broke, i don't know what it does. I did a half assed soldering job and I got the note 5 back together to see what is not working and all I see is the lights on the front buttons don't light up. If that's all that that blue cable does I might not care...
does anyone know what this blue cable does?

it's on the bottom right of the image
Update: Spen detection sensor fixed!! hopefully it stays fixed this time.
Now I want to get that blue cable figured out. I suppose I could just quit and not have my front buttons light up. not much of a loss there.
--looks like its the gps cable.
-- no def not the GPS cable. GPS works fine.
-- finger print sensor gives an error. I bet it's just power going to the front buttons. weird thing is the lights on the buttons flickers with a vibration once when the phone boots up/.
